Barry (J F) Kirwan is a split personality. He writes science fiction under the name Barry Kirwan, and thrillers under his pen name J F Kirwan. In his day job, he travels worldwide, working on aviation safety. He lives in Paris, where he first joined a fiction class – and became hooked! This led to an acclaimed four-book series called the Eden Paradox. But when a back injury stopped him scuba diving for two years, he wrote a thriller series about a young Russian woman, Nadia, where a lot of the action occurred in dangerously deep waters. Since then he wrote a serial killer thriller called The Dead Tell Lies, and is writing a new scifi series starting with When the Children Come....
‘Humans could travel here from Earth one day’ – Exciting Science Fiction ideas!
British author Barry Kirwan, now living outside of Paris, has written academic articles about preventing disasters in nuclear power plants, oil rigs, and aircraft (his work experience has been in air traffic and nuclear power safety), four text books on human error, and ten novels - THE EDEN PARADOX, EDEN’S TRIAL, EDEN’S REVENGE, EDEN’S ENDGAME, 66 METRES, 37 HOURS, 88 NORTH, THE DEAD TELL LIES, and his Children of the Eye Series - WHEN THE CHILDREN COME, WHEN THE CHILDREN RETURN, and now WHEN THE CHILDREN FIGHT BACK – volume 3. He writes under two names – J.F. Kirwan for thrillers and Barry Kirwan for science fiction novels.
Even in the Prologue Barry takes science fiction writing to a new level. His polished prose lingering over character creation assures the recognition of the validity of the human aspects of the ‘children.’ The new story opens as follows: ‘Arrive early, leave early. The Syrn’s axiom for aeons. Macchain Shadiel IV wasn’t about to moderate the winning formula for the most successful species in the galaxy. They already dominated an entire galactic spiral with their shock, shatter, subdue approach to colonization, their gracious warships held in fear and awe by dozens of conquered races…’ The provided synopsis of the book’s tale serves the novel well: ‘A mega-AI known as the Eye is intent on purifying the galaxy, by annihilating all 'organics'. Humanity, itself already decimated after an attack by the Eye, must join eleven other species in the final battle at Orion's Gate to stop their nemesis. Led by Sally, humans have a secret weapon: Ares, the last AI from a dead alien race. But can they really trust Ares? And as the battle rages in the heart of a star nursery nebula, Sally realises that one of the other species is about to betray them all...’
Barry Kirwan understands the importance of allowing the reader to identify with the human characters – a trait that then opens the imagination and involvement in the sci-fi elements. This series is delivered with such style that it transports us into a world so credible that we feel as though we are physically accompanying the characters. Simply excellent!
I think this is the perfect end to a trilogy that captivated me from the very first page of the installment number one. “When the Children Fight Back” has mystery, action and reaction mixed in. The balance between them is almost perfect and makes the book an unforgettable read. As regards the cover, even though they’re similar and in the same colors, they results totally amazing. The contrast between the light and dark is like a metaphor of the plot itself. The scenarios are well developed and have plenty of details; this is one of the reasons why it’s really easy to keep the attention and to follow the characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the series but I wasn’t expecting such an excellent close.
This is the third volume in the Children of the Eye series, written by Barry Kirwan. When the children fight back presents the final war between organic beings and artificial intelligences. The story is completely engaging! The plot has a good balance of action, suspense, adventure and thrill. The characters are well developed and presented in a way you want to keep on reading about them. I would really like there to be another volume in the series. I recommend all fans of adventure and action to read this story!
"When the children fight back" is the third iteration in the 3-book series known as “The Children of The Eye” written by Barry Kirwan. In the third book a mega-AI is hell-bent on purifying the galaxy by eradicating all lifeforms or it likes to call it, “Organics”. The AI is known as the Eye. A superb sci-fi novel filled with action around every corner. Sally the battle commander from the previous books must join forces with other species in order for a last stand against the AI at Orion’s gate. Little does she know one of the species was planning to betray them. They do have a secret weapon, the AI from the last wars, known as Ares, but can they trust it? Every page in this book is filled with intense build-up to the final battle, it’s intense, gruelling and action-packed. A great read!
When the Children Fight Back written by Barry Kirwan is a futuristic novel with an interesting mixture of science, space exploration and technological manipulation woven into its pages. Although it is a work of fiction, the plot is supported by detailed descriptions of technological advances and innovation. This and the descriptions of a society subjected to advances that sometimes go beyond imagination make this book realistic, spine-tingling at times and thought-provoking. The story is set in a dystopic future where the battle between biological beings and artificial intelligence is taking place. A new ally appears to fight together with human beings. Will they survive? A great read, don’t miss it!
"When the Children Fight Back" by Barry Kirwan is the third book in the Children of the Eye series, where science fiction and suspense come together to give life to an exceptional work. The final war breaks out and humanity must join eleven other species in the final battle at Orion's Gate to stop their nemesis. I really enjoyed this book; without a doubt, I think its author is very skilled at creating unique and captivating scenes. I found the world building incredible, the scenes very well described, and the characters are great. Without a doubt, I think it's a great saga to enjoy, which I definitely recommend.
When the Children Fight Back (Children of the Eye Book 3) by Barry Kirwan continues the author's authoritative and creative approach to science fiction. Geared toward an older YA audience, this book pulls you in right away and doesn't let go. The writing sensibility here is finely wrought, with descriptions allowing the reader to fully experience the world the author has created. Characters are distinctive and very relatable. It is then that you realize you can escape into the story itself and allow it to transport you to another place. Plenty of creativity and inventiveness went into this book, and it is highly recommended.
An incredible conclusion well adapted to film. Any of Kirwan's series would be epic in celluloid. Hoping some bright-eyed young director wants to turn this into a cinematic success.
Far off in the future Humanity on Earth has been eradicated by a AI system known as the eye. However humans are not eradicated completely, they are led by a tenacious and smart woman named Sally who teams up with other alien races in the battle to defeat the eye. The AI system is very powerful and is hell bent on completing its mission of purifying the universe by taking out all organic life that is above a certain intelligence level. This book is full of courageous moments twists and turns battles betrayals intrigue and devious missions in a bid to save us all. While this is the last book in the series I definitely think that you need to read the previous two before you read this one otherwise you're going to be extremely lost. The World building as in the other books is phenomenal, and the alien races were varied unique in their own way, and interesting to imagine.
We all have this feeling that we are the only living organism in the galaxy, “When the Children Fight Back” the third of the series takes us to a world where we know that we are not alone in this galaxy. In this installment of the Children of the Eye, our heroes, humans and aliens and some AI’s banded together to finally face-off with the mega being called “The Eye”. It's an interesting and action packed read, I like the author’s play with words to keep the story telling and the characters interesting. I expected the betrayal but it was still delivered in a way that surprised me a little. It is an amazing science fiction book that has a lot of great lessons. It's a great world to dive into, although this book is a standalone , I would recommend reading the first 2 for a better understanding of the characters.
This is the final book in a trilogy that I have followed from the start. Barry Kirwan has always written stories that I want to read. He writes so well that I have looked forward to every book in the trilogy.
A Sci-fi series that has taken us through these characters lives and battles, now, faced with the final book, I wondered how Barry was going to end everything. It has been a pleasure to be at the side of the characters as they have grown throughout. It seems forever since Nathan started on his mission, in When The Children Fight Back we see Sally very secure in her place as Leader.
Told from different points of view, we are again told the story from every angle, alternating through the chapters. This always makes the story an immersive one. I tend to feel like I'm transported to his characters sides whenever I read his books. This book is definitely no different. Every character is still as realistic as they always were and I find myself relating to them. This makes me care about what happens and I just need to keep turning the pages to find out.
As gritty and vivid as always, When The Children Fight Back, is packed full of action, even more tension and suspense! An absolutely cracking ending to this amazing series, I will miss The Children of the Eye and am quite sad there will be no more books to wait for. I hope Barry Kirwan writes more just so I can read it! Such a great Sci fi series! Thanks to Rachel's Random Resources and Barry Kirwan.
Many years have passed since the mission to rescue Earth from the Axleth. In the aftermath of the battle, tenuous alliances have been forged and Sally, accompanied by the survivors from the human fighting force that trained on the Athena, finds herself headed to a final reckoning with The Eye as part of the Axel/Axleth armada.
No one knows what lies ahead, but they aim to find allies in the form of eleven other species recruited by the Axleth to rendezvous at Orion's Gate, before taking the fight to The Eye on its mysterious home world at the heart of a star nursery nebulla - but Sally hopes that their secret weapon of the alien AI being Ares, who she has come to consider part of her family, will bring them the edge they need.
Will the old adage of 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' hold true? Can they trust this diverse force of aliens thrown together in a common cause... and when it comes to it, can they really trust Ares either?
When the Children Fight Back is the concluding part of the Children of The Eye trilogy, and what a finale it is! The scope of the first two books has been incredible, morphing from an unsettling apocalyptic blockbuster into a gripping battle for the survival of humankind, but this final book blows them both out of the water with the sheer scale of what Kirwan accomplishes with the delicious space opera twists, turns and conundrums he creates.
It is hard to talk about this one quite as much as I would like, as to do so would give away far too many spoilers, but Kirwan clearly draws on his deep love of the great sci-fi writers of the past to develop his ideas about what might lie out there in space. In many ways he gives the most gracious of nods to some of those eminent writers, but he also goes beyond the groundwork they have laid to weave a really exciting story full of creativity and imagination that carries you along on a thrilling, page-turner of a (galactic) ride.
There are many familiar faces here for readers of the series, which links the books together nicely and ensures you are fully invested during the tricky trials and tribulations that Kirwan puts them through - I promise you many moments of sitting on the edge of your seat with your heart in your mouth. You also get to know the Axel much better in this book, as many of them become true friends to the human contingent during their quest to rid the galaxy of The Eye. The new characters are intriguing too, especially of the alien ally variety, which Kirwan has a lot of fun with when imagining what they might look like, as well as in terms of what their motivations and sense of fair play might involve.
There are layers upon layers to peel back before the chilling truth about what has been going on all along in the hearts and minds of some of the players in this epic production becomes horribly clear, but this is balanced beautifully by warmer feelings evoked by comradeship. love and heroic acts of sacrifice that fill your heart - and tearful eyes - to the brim. For a series so packed with hard-edged sci-fi material, it has a solid core of emotional depth, which really raises it above the crowd. I enjoyed how Kirwan takes you on a philosophical journey too, and in many ways explores what it means to be human.
This is some of the most exciting, intelligent and far-sighted science fiction writing I have read in a long while, and I am intrigued about what comes next from Barry Kirwan. There is scope here for more thrilling books to follow on from this series - and I really want to read them!
In When the Children Fight Back, we step back into the lives of Nathan, Lara, Sally, Michael and their children, all working to save the universe from an AI determined to destroy all organic life. Our cast of characters expands here to include 11 other species and a great multispecies Armada to destroy The Eye once and for all.
This book covers family, honour, pain, sacrifice, betrayal, and the overall ethics of AI, while taking the reader through an epic story. The characters are fully formed from the first two books (it feels like touching base with old friends) and the new species are definitely imaginative. The story speeds through space and time, coming to an epic battle that sees the universe forever changed.
My only issue with this one was the Prologue. Though nice to know and an essential tangent, it didn’t jump me back into the world straight away. I found it heavy and a little confusing.
That said, and as usual, I want to know what happens next! 😁 I can’t quite believe this is the end.
When the Children Fight Back concludes a multi-generational, multi-galaxy adventure that I’m thinking I’ll be re-reading this for years to come.
Congrats to Barry Kirwan for producing such an excellent trilogy.
If you enjoy a good Sci-Fi novel then I think you might enjoy When the Children Fight Back. This is book three in the series and the story concludes. I’ve read them all now and this one was my favorite.
Without giving any spoilers away the gist of the story is as follows: There are many different civilisations living in the universe and all are under attack from the “Eye”, (an AI system) that wishes to destroy all organic life forms and in this the final instalment, the galaxies merge together to make their stand against The Eye, which begins the ultimate fight for survival, love, loss, betrayal and victory.
I found this to be an imaginative end to the trilogy, and I really enjoyed it. The character development in each of the novels has been superb. The growth from book to book was really rewarding for me, and pulled me deeper into the multi-layered plot all the time. I felt I really get to know each individual character in a way that felt really personal. When the Children Fight Back was quite a fast-paced plot which added to the excitement for me, especially with this being the conclusion.
Overall I’d describe the final book of the trilogy as an edge-of-your-seat read. Very recommended by me for sci-fi readers out there.
Readers who enjoy action and cyberpunk will devour When the Children Fight Back as it completes the Children of the Eye trilogy. Barry Kirwan masters the power of the pen as he brings humans, aliens, and AI warfare to life. Sally wants revenge, but also she wants freedom from the bonds of fear and destruction. As she rallies humans and aliens alike, they depend heavily on Ares, an AI. It's hard fighting The Eye, but even more horrendous when they have to watch their backs from the traders within.
Though Sally was just one key character in When the Children Fight Back, she symbolized the price her leadership would cost. Barry Kirwan skillfully keeps you mesmerized by the battles fought, suspicious activity among the characters, and the deception of The Eye. I highly recommend indulging in this series when you need a break from reality.
When the Children Fight Back is written by author Barry Kirwan. It is the third book in the Children of the Eye trilogy. The author has presented an illustrative narrative through the Sci-Fi write-up. It's extremely gripping and sucks you into a world full of awe and wonder. There's action, drama, zeal, energy, and much more. It is a complete power-packed action sequence on its own. You'll love how the author has created a web of alien forces, humanitarian annihilation, and timeless action revolving around it. The characters are unique and have special strengths of their own. The character development and plot twist are just one of a kind. It's otherworldly and innovative and will grab your attention from the very first page.
When the children fight back by Kirwan is the third book in the Children of the Eye series but it can definitely be read as a standalone. Revolving around the theme of artificial intelligence, the book’s narrative is well-crafted and not overwhelming given the fact that AI may not sometimes be easy to follow. Author Kirwan seems to be a witty writer with solid writing skills since this narrative flows smoothly. He has written a delightful as well as an engaging work-out for the brain because the characters are always giving us plenty of action. This book offers us a master class in writing, it is a real treat! Loved it!
Kirwan has been on my virtual shelf more than once; his excellent writing and imagination create amazing stories. His stories, rooted in alien technology or species, focus on how humanity gets involved with interstellar beings.
One of my favorite things about Kirwan is his ability to show us his characters' perspectives without overwhelming us with a cast. Sally is a fantastic leader and has a real down-to-earth quality about her. The AI this book focuses on feels sentient, and they feel like a real threat.
This book is part of a trilogy, and I highly recommend you read through all of them in the series. It's a series of fantastic sci-fi tales that will get you thinking about our role in the universe and what else might be out there. Like all great sci-fi writers before him, Kirwan gives us perspective beyond the stars.
