Gospel Privilege: The Unearned Advantage That's Meant for Everyone

Rate this book
In this upside-down world, when the have and have-nots are at war; when the privileged and underprivileged contend for resources, man fails to look at what’s truly eternity. In America, the fight for equal rights, better treatment under the law, social justice, and income inequality permeate our dialogues. Now more than ever, people are vying for power and influence. Yet too few in this country actually consider the greatest power of all, known to millions of believers worldwide as the kingdom of God.

In America, you will find the gospel message of Jesus Christ on every corner. But in other parts of the world, the kingdom message is like a river in the desert. Too few have the privilege to access this grace because those possessing this abundance refuse to fulfill the Great Commission by giving it away.

In Gospel Privilege , author David Joannes testifies, “Gospel privilege is the soul-saving, culture-shaping, world-changing message that’s come into the world through the Person of Jesus. It is an unearned spiritual advantage with eternal consequences meant for every human being.” Gospel Privilege provides the keys you need to unlock your full potential as an effective witness of this kingdom power. This resource will inspire change in you as you read testimony after testimony of people who use their gospel privilege to bring the kingdom message worldwide.

How will you use your privilege in this hour?

Because we own the gospel, we therefore owe the gospel to those who have yet to hear and receive it by faith. This is the crux behind Joannes's book, Gospel Privilege. He challenges his readers to not just see the Christian life as a merely a decision made for Jesus Christ, but as life-long discipleship unto Christ, that is serious about carrying the message of the kingdom to the world. Gospel privilege recognizes the treasure of the gospel itself, the lack of access that many have in hearing that message, and the momentum with which the gospel is going forth. In turn, those who have such privilege should live out their faith marked by humility, compassion, and triumphal spirit. We of all people know that one day peoples from every tribe, tongue, and nation will be gathered around the throne in worship to God. Let's take our duty of declaring God's glory among the nations with great delight!

There’s a lot in this book. The author weaves together scripture, history, data, quotes from other books, and stories (primarily but not exclusively from people serving with his ministry in East Asia). The author also tackles moralistic therapeutic deism, consumerist and individualistic approaches to Christianity, Christian nationalism, and today’s debates about social justice.

I found chapter two particularly strong; it explains the issue of gospel access and illustrates it with the story of a woman in China whose life was transformed by the gospel. That might be just what you need as you work on a talk, lesson, or sermon on that topic. Chapter five unpacks a biblical understanding of social justice, leaning on recent work from Tim Keller, and brings it to life with a compelling story from the life of an indigenous missionary in East Asia.

Note that the book seems to assume an American readership and directly challenges American Christianity.
