Two broken men. One secret addiction. No turning back.

When Derreck stumbles upon Maddy, who is sitting in his car and nearly sweating to death under the summer’s sun, he is at his breaking point.

But Maddy is just as lost, searching for a Dom he only knows by name and waiting in his car outside the club Unkinked on the tiny chance that the Dom might find him. When it is revealed that Derreck is the man Maddy has been searching for from the very beginning, it seems fate couldn’t get any sweeter.

Derreck invites Maddy into Unkinked as his guest, with the promise of the pain that Maddy so desperately craves. A scene that should have been simple opens Maddy’s mind to a new world and community that aren’t riddled with guilt or judgment.

Derreck knows he can’t let his sub slip away, but Maddy is keeping secrets from his new Dom—secrets that could change their relationship forever.

Reader advisory: This book features pain play, edge play and knife play. One character has a history of addiction and self-harm.

New author for me, but one that I think I'll be exploring more of. As is a habit of mine I started with the second book not realizing that this was a series. I'll have to go back to the first book since they each, (there's currently 3), pick up where each of the previous ones leave off. It's listed as an M/M romance but there really isn't as much romance as you would think...but I 'd have to say that there is a great deal of love. "Unkinked" is a BDSM club. The first books I ever read that featured a BDSM club was K.C. Wells & Parker Williams "Collars and Cuffs" series, which I'm still reading and remains one of my absolutely favorite series, but this was nothing like that series other than the club type and that the two main characters had an "over the moon" type of dynamic that gave the reader hope that Maddy was going to get what he was so desperately searching for. I can only think of two words that really describes this story, "raw" and "addictive".

I don't remember how I found out about this book but it was my first by this author and I loved it. I am not into pain myself so sometimes, depending on the book, I can't get into it. But this one was all about the mental side, and of course Maddy's growth and development. I really loved both Maddy and Derreck, I could've kept reading about them for hours.

This book contains some graphic descriptions of requested and delivered pain, but the story is so very much more. Derreck may be a sadist but he is sensitive to the secrets and fears of others Maddy sees himself as weak and ineffectual, but he is the only one in the book who is brave enough to openly ask for what he wants. This is not just kink, this is a love story with characters you can feel for.

This is a very well written book. Right from the start, we delve straight into the story and get to meet our two main characters, Derreck and Maddy. The focus of the story is on their BDSM relationship and the troubles they encounter while trying to get to know each other.

At the start, there is a clear separation between their BDSM play and sex, which I absolutely love! So many people assume that BDSM always have to mean sex as well, while this is not true. While the relationship between the two main characters slowly evolves and they do eventually add sex to their encounters, it’s still great that this book acknowledges that BDSM and sex don’t always have to go together.
The book also focuses on Dom drops, another element of BDSM that is sometimes a bit overlooked. Sub drops? Sure! But aftercare is also important for a Dom and the author spends some time on both.

While I really liked the writing and I could clearly feel the chemistry between the two main characters, I have one major issue with this book: the ending. Not only is it abrupt, there are two story arches which haven’t been resolved at the end yet. And yes, there will be a next book, but that one will have different main characters and these story arches are clearly focussed on Maddy. I’m really disappointed the author didn’t take the time to wrap those points up. It didn’t even have to be a big thing, just a couple of lines would have been great and I would have been able to let it go. Now I have these unanswered questions in my head what happened and if everything will be all right. There is a HEA, but because of these unanswered issues, for me it feels more like a HFN ending.

I loved the first book in this series as well and we get to meet the characters of the first book briefly in this one, as well as some references to a scene happening in the first book. If you really want to get all the details, I suggest you start your reading with the first book, Kinked Up, as that one is awesome as well. However, I do think it’s also possible to read this book on its own.

Overall, this is a great book and I would definitely recommend reading it. I’m also really looking forward to the next book in this series!.

Unkinked is the second book in the It’s a Kink Thing series. It can be read as a standalone. If you read my previous review, I was not the biggest fan of book 1, but enjoyed the authors style of writing so I chose to give this book a chance, and I’m so glad I did! Derreck was treated so poorly by Trick, and is struggling with Dom drop. Very early in the book he does get an apology, but what he needs most is a sub that can handle him. Maddy is brand new to kink, but no stranger to pain and masochism. What starts as the perfect kink partnership evolves into a relationship that is unexpected for both. There is so much growth for both men as they navigate healing old wounds and learning to trust each other. There’s also a lot of storyline around how mental health can be poorly dealt with in a work setting. I absolutely loved how Maddy gained confidence to stand for himself. The scenes in this book were so hot. I am surprised the direction the author is going for the next book, but guarantee I’ll be along for the ride!

pretty good

I’m enjoying this series so far. While I feel like this book has a different vibe than Kinked Up and a bit of a slower start, I really liked Derreck and Maddy’s chemistry. Derreck had so much patience and kindness for Maddy. Maddy in return worried for Derreck in a way that the Dom wasn’t used to. I also think their Dom/sub dynamic will keep them on their toes. I like seeing Clint again in this book. He’s like the overseer and watches over his friends to keep them all safe. I hope that Clint will find a happily ever after for himself soon especially now that he has Maddy to help him at Unkinked. This series is one that I think I’ll come back to especially if the author continues to build this world around Unkinked.

This is the second book in the series but it can definitely be read as a stand-alone book. This story focuses on Maddy and Derrick.

I thought this book was quite sweet and I really liked Maddy as he was so much stronger than he gave himself credit for. Derrick was very growly and overprotective at times as well. I did struggle slightly to connect with the characters at first but as the story progressed, I found I became more engaged and hooked on their relationship.

I haven’t read the other book in this series yet but I would consider going back and reading it now and continuing with the series as new books are released.

DNF @ 10%.

This is my 5th MC Roth book… and while I’ve enjoyed her writing, I’m not enjoying how she is describing Derreck. It’s the 2020s, why are authors still using food to describe POCs’ skin?

In Kinked Up, Derreck’s skin is referred to as “caramel”. Apparently in this book, the author wanted to take that up a notch:

Maddy was pale — like he’d never seen the sun because he lived like a vampire pale. Derreck’s caramel skin looked like a cup of coffee with the perfect amount of cream next to his. It was almost exotic — which was probably a strange word to describe a man.

>

Umm… it’s a strange word to describe a human.

Do better, MC Roth.

I absolutely loved this book.

The main characters are so vulnerable. It's a privilege to read how they find each other and how they heal.
This book has some serious kink but it felt warm and safe because of the trust that the characters have in each other. They are two halves of a whole.

I loved that, unlike most BDSM books, the reader got to see the vulnerabilities of the Dom as well, and that Dom dropping was mentioned.
I also loved that, in the beginning, kink was seperated from sex. I don't see that mentioned often.

This book would have gotten 5 stars if it wasn't for the abrupt ending.
I don't necessarily need a sappy epilogue, just as long as I know the main characters are together, but I needed a bit more than this ending that didn't give me any feels.

We met Derreck in the last book and events in that book left him adrift and low. Oddly enough he's a professional grave digger, by hand, not machine. Not that really has anything to do with the story other than his profession. After being left reeling by events prior to this book Derreck is unsure of himself and suffering from domdrop. How do you fix it? In Derrek's case you meet and scene with Maddy who is a pain slut. (i think that's the right verbage). overall i liked their story, I don't understand the need to inflict pain or receive pain ( i do in the sense that when i'm stressed tattoo pain makes me feel better, but not in the sense i want to be filleted open). regardless, it worked for them and they really are perfect for each other.

Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5

Much better for me than book one.

I’m not sure what it says about me that I liked this book much better than the first one. Kinked Up was all about humiliation with some pain play and it was a bit too much for me. However, Unkinked is all about pain and I didn’t mind it at all. I think it’s because the sub, Maddy, begged for it and seemed to really need it. Derreck is a Dom and a sadist and he’s happy to give Maddy what he needs.

I liked Maddy and felt a bit sorry for him most of the time. He’s always felt like he didn’t belong and he’s afraid of what people will think if they find out about his need for pain. It’s a bit into the story before Maddy and Derreck embark on more than a Dom/sub relationship but once they do, I thought they were really good together.

I think Shannon Gunn did an even better job performing this story than he did with Kinked Up. There were just a couple places that I thought there was a bit too much drama in his voice but overall it was great.

MC Roth is one of my favourite authors, and Unkinked did nothing to change my opinion. As with most of her books, this one kept me glued to the pages guessing about the characters, never quite sure how the story would work out. This one is Derreck’s story, and after meeting him in the previous book I was so happy to learn more about him. A Dom who likes to inflict pain, he's the perfect partner for Maddy, who's addicted to it. Of course, nothing in life is that easy, and their journey to being together is filled with misunderstanding, personal discovery, pain and steamy times. Derreck and Maddy are terrific characters, and I loved getting to know them as they discovered their inner strength and courage, and that they need each other to feel whole.
While this story could be read as a stand-alone you’ll gain more from it if you start with book one, and if you like stories about kink then this book and the series is one for you.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, and this is my honest opinion.

This book is an interesting look at what draws people to each other and how their interests fit together. Derreck was in book one of this series that is based around a certain type of club. In book one he was disappointed in losing a sub that he was interested in to another dom because their appetites didn’t match up, but in this book M. C. Roth goes on to show that there is someone out there who matches what you need even if what you need is really strong. Maddy just shows up in Derreck’s life and although they would maybe seem too different to have a chance at a relationship, they are both hiding secrets that make them perfect for each other. I liked how slowly things were revealed about the secrets and how the relationship develops and particularly how Derreck stressed consent especially when things got strong. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more stories in this series.

Wow this certainly was a bit different, but my God I absolutely adored this book. The storyline was incredible with Derreck and Maddy, Derrick is a Dom that has really struggled going back to the BDSM club due to an incident with a sub. Maddy he audits the auditors, a friend of his told him to go to the BDSM club and ask for Derreck, he sat in his car for a long time until someone came along to see what is he doing sitting there. This story only got hotter, M,C, Roth really blew this story out of the water, there was trauma, fear, courage, strength, confusion, conflicts, pain, secrets, obstacles, healing, passion, lust, romance, and harmony, happiness also could be love.

It is highly recommended that you begin the series with the very first book, as Unkinked picks up right where the previous book, Kinked Up, left off. It is quite unpolished and grainy. Although I wouldn't classify this as a romance, it most certainly is a love tale. Maddy has an insatiable appetite for pain. Derrick is exactly the kind of cruel person that can assist Maddy. Maddy has the impression that he is weak, but Derrick convinces him that this is not the case. The narrative is nicely written, and each scenario is vividly described. Maddy and Derrick have a sizzling and smoldering chemistry that can be felt by both parties. This was an amazing narrative, but it finished way too quickly for my liking. An amazing tale that is both raw and dirty throughout its entirety. Very well written, with excellent flow throughout.

This is book two in a series and, while it can work as a standalone, there’s some context to be gained on characters and previous events from reading the first book first-- if you haven’t already, it’s well worth checking out. This book is Maddy and Derrick’s story, and I appreciated both the careful depictions of a variety of the aspects of BDSM (like Dom drop, for instance) and the nuanced, layered nature of both protagonists and the connection they build over the course of the story. There’s chemistry and feelings and grit and messiness and progress and growth etc— it makes for an interesting and immersive read.

ANOTHER KINKY HIT!

I absolutely got hooked on this author with the first book and now I am addicted to MC Roth’s writing style!

The character build was distinctive as the story progressed and the world building was incredibly informative!

The dynamic between Derrick and Maddy was strangers to friends at first and then they just flowed like they were meant to meet each other on that fateful night to complete their deepest and darkest desires!

It was not an easy journey with a couple of hiccups along the road and true MC Roth style- a couple of twists and surprises!

I loved it and look forward to the next book with another kink!.

Derrick & Maddy.....

Maddy knew what he wanted has always wanted, trying to find that certain person was impossible until he heard of a man going by the name of Derrick...
On an extremely hot day wrapped in a thick jumper, Maddy waited outside a certain club...
Knocking on the window was a man with beautiful caramel skin and gorgeous brown eyes... Derrick!

That is their beginning, there is so much that has happened in their lives that is written beautifully.
They both gain strength, they face fear, and they are courageous.
Did I mention passion?
Their passion is beautiful.......
Such a beautiful story about two guys who gave each other what they needed.
M.C. Roth again finds the correct words to write a sensational story.

Tenderness that’s not always visible in some kink books.

I’ve read the others in this series and this one is my favorite so far. The buildup is great and the characters even better. MC Roth writes kink well and this book showcases that. I couldn’t get through this story fast enough.

Derreck understands Maddy in a way that few others do, and I liked the way they meshed. Maddy needs pain in his play and Derreck can give it in the way Maddy needs but also with respect. I liked that these two are hurt but find a way to work together to heal each other. The story gave me hope and I liked that.

The story took a while to unfold, but it was worth the wait.

If you’re looking for something hot and totally worth getting invested in, then this is the one for you. Check it out.

Unkinked follows almost directly after book 1 so I'd recommend reading that first, especially as characters from that feature.

This was heavier in tone for me and I struggled with parts. Maddy seemed so terribly broken that I wondered if kink and Derrick were really right for him. Then I was proven wrong. Maddy comes alive with Derrick's careful pain. They follow safe, sane and consensual well and I loved the kinks shown

I really liked it showing Dom drop and what Derrick gets out of the relationship.

Like others have said, the ending was a tad ubrupt. I'd have liked a little more of that scene or some answers on other story threads.

I'm really interested to continue with the series

Unkinked is book two in the It’s A Kink Thing series. You really should start with the first book in the series, as Unkinked starts where Kinked Up ended. It’s seriously raw and gritty. I wouldn’t call this a romance but it’s definitely a love story. Maddy craves to be hurt. Derrick is just the sadist to help Maddy. Maddy thinks he’s weak, but Derrick helps him to believe he’s not so weak. The story is well written and scenes descriptive. The chemistry between Maddy and Derrick is hot and steamy, palpable. We do get a quick revisit with Trick and Nav. I seriously loved this story, but it ended abruptly. Overall, a fantastically raw and gritty story. Well written with fantastic pacing.

Both of these men were broken from different traumas, but once they met, their kinks aligned.

I absolutely loathed Maddy's toxic work environment and the way it affected him but he held his own beautifully!

The guilt that Derreck held with his previous "partial" sub that we met in the first book was there but as he and Maddy have more scenes, he learns to cope with it.

I definitely recommend this series as a whole!.

It was good. Not as great as the first one. It started out fairly slow and even though it heated up for their sex life, I felt the story kind of stayed slow. The only kink it really addressed was pain. I felt like it left a few things hanging. Overall, had great potential. Another story that I don’t see as a romance, more of a kinky story where they develop feelings. It lacked those personal details like the first book. Their personalities seemed a bit flatter. I enjoyed the read tho, would recommend it to my friends looking for a BDSM story.

This book....
There is so much more to this than just the kink. Sure, this book, and series, may be set around certain kinks in the Unkinked Community, but there is so much more depth to the entire story.
Two broken characters may have started out with a similar kink need, but they end up being what each other needs.
I'm blown away that this book doesn't have that many reviews. But that explains why I enjoyed it so much. Lately in the past few years, I tend to enjoy the books that have as much popularly.

This was a good book. M.C. is a new author to me and I will be back to read more after this book. I really enjoyed this book as I had a hard time putting it down. Maddy and Derreck were perfect for each other and though they had their ups and downs, these two were able to reveal all their selects and get HEA that was just right for them.

Unkinked is the second book in the It's a Kink Thing. All I can say is WOW! I am not a person for BDSM. Not because of the kink but because of how it's sometimes written. But M.C. Roth did a wonderful job. The BDSM was not the main focus. It was the couple. M.C. Roth kept my attention from beginning to end.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I don't know why I expected it to be less well-written than it was (there was no reason for such a view), but I found the characters deep, the world rich, and the story satisfying. I read it as a standalone: while I think I would have benefitted from knowing more about the backstories from book 1, I didn't find it difficult to quickly catch up.

S&M is definitely not my fave kink, but that's not the reason for the star-drop. I just didn't feel like Maddy and Derreck (which should be spelt Derrick in my mind, and I couldn't get over it 🤣) actually connected...at one point, D tells M that he (M) doesn't really know him (D), and honestly I never really saw that change?
