Works of American playwright Arthur Asher Miller include Death of a Salesman (1949), for which he won a Pulitzer Prize, and The Crucible (1953).


This essayist, a prominent figure in literature and cinema for over 61 years, composed a wide variety, such as celebrated A View from the Bridge and All My Sons , still studied and performed worldwide. Miller often in the public eye most famously refused to give evidence to the un-American activities committee of the House of Representatives, received award for drama, and married Marilyn Monroe. People at the time considered the greatest Miller.

دختر ۲: خب، این بار داری چی می‌خونی؟

دختر ۱ (نگاهی به جلد کتاب می‌اندازد): میلر. یه نمایشنامه به اسم سرازیر در کوه مورگن.

دختر ۲ (با خنده نسبتأ بلند): این دیگه چیه؟ اسمش انگار از یه بازی محلی هزارسال پیش الهام گرفته شده.

دختر ۱: راستش نه! شایدم یه جورایی هست. خب چون قصه‌اش درباره بازی دادنه. و درباره آدمیه که توی یه لحظه، همه چیز تو زندگیش از هم می‌پاشه.

دختر ۲ (کنجکاو): چی باعثش می‌شه؟

دختر ۱ (لبخند می‌زند): یه تصادف. ولی تصادف فقط جرقه‌اس. میلر این‌جا داره یه آینه می‌سازه؛ آینه‌ای که توش می‌بینی چقدر می‌تونی زندگی رو پیچیده کنی، چقدر می‌تونی از خودت فرار کنی، و چقدر میتونی توی یه دروغ غرق شی ولی بازم فکر کنی که داری صادقانه زندگی می‌کنی.

دختر ۲: آهه! عاشق این اشتیاق‌ و برق چشماتم وقتی از کتابا حرف میزنی. یعنی این هم از اون نمایشنامه‌های سنگین و اخلاقیه که هیشکی دوسشون نداره؟

دختر ۱: نه دقیقاً. چون میلر خیلی روون حرف می‌زنه. انگار خودش نشسته گوشه‌ صحنه، یه سیگار روشن کرده و داره درباره آدم‌هایی که می‌شناسه، قصه می‌گه. ولی هر جمله‌اش مثل دود سیگارش تلخ و واقعی‌یه.

دختر ۲ (با کمی تمسخر): حالا درباره چی حرف می‌زنه این آقای روگن؟

دختر ۱ (مکث می‌کند): آقای روگن نه، آقای میلر. و اسم نمایشنامه هم سرازیر در کوه مورگن‌ه.
خب راستش داستانش درباره انتخاب‌هاست. درباره اینکه ما کی هستیم وقتی نقاب‌هامون کنار می‌رن. و خب اون نمی‌خواد بهت درس بده، فقط می‌خواد یه سوال بندازه تو سرت؛ این‌که چقدر از چیزی که فکر می‌کنی هستی، واقعاً خودتی؟

دختر ۲: پوووف! خیلی فلسفی شد. یالا! یه چیزی بگو که وسوسه بشم بخونمش.

دختر ۱ (با اشتیاق نگاهش می‌کند): خب ببین، این نمایشنامه شبیه اینه که تو همون لحظه‌ای که داری با ماشینت از یه کوه میای پایین، بفهمی ترمزت بریده. نه می‌تونی برگردی، نه می‌تونی وایسی. توی اون لحظه فقط به این فکر می‌کنی که وقتی اون پایین به ته دره رسیدی، چیزی ازت باقی می‌مونه؟

دختر ۲ (چشم‌هاش گرد می‌شود): باشه، گرفتم. فقط بگو، آخرش قراره چجوری تموم بشه؟

دختر ۱ (لبخند تلخی می‌زند): این‌جوری تموم می‌شه که وقتی کتاب رو می‌بندی، هنوز داری فکر می‌کنی. درباره خودت، درباره همه انتخاب‌هایی که کردی و همه چیزهایی که نکردی. میلر همیشه همین کارو می‌کنه. یه داستان می‌گه، ولی آخرش انگار داره از تو حرف می‌زنه.

دختر ۲ : لعنت بهت، قانعم کردی. بده بخونمش.

(دختر ۱ کتاب را به دختر ۲ می‌دهد و همان لحظه، صدای باران شدت می‌گیرد. صحنه تاریک می‌شود.)

I didn't like this book at all. I didn't like the play or the plot of the story. I think that it was dumb that Lyman's wives were both contacted, and how that dilemma came about. I thought that Theo and Leah both deserved to know the truth, but if it was up to me, I'd divorce Lyman and find someone who was actually honest, and would be faithful. On account of having to read it for another challenge, that is the only reason I read the book.

This is probably my favourite Arthur Miller play so far! Absolutely adores it! The premise is si fun, a man who has a car crush and his two wives meet, but there is so much more beyond that. It is very philosophical but in a humorous way.

Started out very perplexing but quickly resolved itself. It is a very dramatic situation, and ultimately it's unclear if there's a hero at the end. I felt great empathy for Lyman, but he justifies his selfishness as "honesty". Kind of hard to swallow, because he hasn't been honest with anyone until his double life was discovered. Still, the characters are rich, and I'm sure this would be a challenging play for any of the actors performing in this play.

What a crazy concept a man who has two wives and all the complexity that goes on when you have two families that don't know about each other.

This story really makes you look at all the characters in an authentic and complex way. I didn't hate the main character which is a feat in of itself since he created the mess. I was forced to stay in the grey of this situation. I recommend this play.

شهرة ميللر لم تتوقف على إبداعاته في التأليف المسرحي وتقويم الاخراج والشخصيات والتى يعرف هذا النوع من المبدعين ب " رجل المسرح" ، بل للقضايا الإنسانية التى شنتها بعض السياسات الوحشية فكان من أشد المعترضين على الحرب ضد الفيتنام ، وآرائه اليسارية والعدائية تجاه الرأسمالية ، وهجومه على سياسة احتلال فلسطين ، لاقت انتشاراً وتركت أثراً في معظم أعماله المسرحية .

يعد ميللر من صفوة المسرح الأمريكي المعاصر ، فلم يودع العالم إلا متأخراً في سنة ٢٠٠٥ ، بعد أن تناول الكثير من القضايا الاجتماعيه والاقتصادية في أعماله المسرحية ، وإحداها بين يدي .

" الجميع لديهم سيرة ذاتية ، لكن لا يستطيع الجميع أن يكتبوا مسرحية"

تجربته في التقشف بعد الرفاهية ، ورواية الأخوة كرامازوف ، والتأثر بالمسرح الأغريقي اصقلت مواهب ميللر بمراحل ، وإن اختلفت فحوى المسرحيات إلا أنها تهدف إلى الوعي والتغير الاجتماعي ، لذا مسرحية الهبوط من جبل مورجان اتسمت بجرأة الطرح والمنطيقة وإن خالفه البعض في ذلك!

" هل يمكنك أن تحب أكثر من إمرأة بشكي حقيقي؟ "

مسرحية مليئة بالسريالية والخيال فتتداخل الأزمنه مع الأمكنه والشخصيات ، فكأن المشاهد على المسرح وقارئ الكتاب في رحله لذكريات الشخصيات ، حيث تندعم الخفايا فترى مايحدث للأحباب وأنت بعيد عنهم .

تدور احداث المسرحية عن رجل خمسيني في صراع دائم مع نفسه ومع زوجتيه والتى بفعلته تلك خرق القانون بين امرأة تقليديه حد الرتابة وبين شابه ترضي رغباته الرجوليه ، إنه الحب - كما يدعي بطله - لو أن القانون انصفه في الاحتفاظ بالاثنتين دون تطليق أحدهما لأن قلبه يتسع لأن يحب امرأتين في نفس الوقت!

أنّبه ضميره لأكثر من مره ، تاره لخداع نساءه بالحب الأبدي والوفاء ، وتاره حينما أوهم الشابه اليهودية بطلاق زوجته البروتستانتية ، والفاجعة الكبرى بعد صدمة أبناءه من كلا المرأتين بوجود علاقه مع إمرأه غير والدتهم .
أنه الطمع في الاستحواذ على المرأتين دون أن يعنفه أحد على فعلته ، ففي النهايه قبيل اكتشافهن للخيانه استطاع أن يسعد الأسرتين !

" افتقد الشجاعة، تلك هى القصة كلها . أفتقد الشجاعة! "

عند الانتهاء من المسرحية ملحق بدراسة نقدية للأستاذ الدكتور أسامه أبو طالب ، والذي أبدع في فهم وفك شفرات الحوارات والشخصيات ، وتسليط ميللر على الكشف عن العقليه اليهودية والمسيحيه للمرأة ، وعن الصراع الداخلي والطمع وتأنيب الضمير الذي تداخل جميعهم في وقت واحد والخوف والرهبه من الأب رغم أنه غدا رجلاً لكن العقل الباطن يرفض نكران ماحدث له في طفولته ، وعن العنصرية وتحقير الزنوج والتى لعبت دور ممرضه في المسرحية .

حينما أعجب بأديب روائي أو مسرحي إعجابي به لايتمحور فقط لإبداعات قلمه ، بل لخلقه النبيله ، فهذا السيد الذي رفض جائزة القدس من قبل إيريل شارول في عام٢٠٠٣ رد رفضه بأسلوب يحتاج إلى الكثير من الجرأه " إن سياسة إسرائيل لا تستحق أي احترام "

I’m usually a pretty charitable reviewer, but this play was abysmal — not merely bad but insulting. There is a moment toward the end when, while pontificating to a small captive audience that includes his wives, the male lead self-righteously demands to know: “Aren’t women people?” That about sums it up for me.

This is a play about the world warping itself to accommodate a wealthy, mediocre man’s ego. It’s about a man who has spent a decade leading a double life — two wives, two homes, two sets of kids, neither of which is aware of the other — and the way the house of cards finally comes crashing down. If that were all, you might have something interesting and worthwhile here. But Arthur Miller writes this from a vantage point sympathetic to the man at the center, and to facilitate this, he writes some of the worst, least developed, least believable, most feeble-minded women characters I have encountered in a long time. They are women whose words and actions are so clumsy that they loudly announce themselves, “I was written by a man.” The writing was so bad that it has made me doubt my recollection of classic plays like “The Crucible,” “All My Sons,” and “Death of a Salesman.” Was Miller… always this bad at writing women into his plays? I don’t remember that being the case, but after reading this, I can’t help but doubt my own memory on this account.

I’ve long enjoyed and admired Arthur Miller’s plays, enough so that I’d have considered him one of the best American artists of the 20th century. He wrote banger after banger at the height of his career, fusing great writing with an unmistakable talent for piercing the shortcomings of American culture. But this (among his later plays — first staged in 1991) is a car crash of a play. If you’d like to keep your respect for Miller in tact, steer clear.

عندما يتعلق الامر بقراءة مسرحية لارثر ميللر فأنت لست قارىء فقط .. بل قارىء و مخرج مسرحي .. تقراء ولا تكاد تمر بضعة اسطر الا وهناك ملاحظة اخراجية تجعل منك و انت تقراء تتخيل كل مشهد و كل موقف بل يصل الامر الي ان تتخيل خشبة المسرح و انت تقف خلف الكواليس توجه الفنانين لما عليهم فعله وجدت هذا في الكثير من المسرحيات التي قراتها لميللر مثل بعد السقوط و مشهد من الجسر الا انني اجد هذا الامر في قمة ذروته في هذة المسرحية "السقوط من جبل مرجان" نفس ما شعرت به هذا فوجئت بدراسة عنه بالضبط في ملحق بالمسرحية .. الامر الذي اكد لدي جمال و روعة قلم ارثر ميللر في الكتابة و سر عبقريته المسرحية
و بدون اي سرد من احدث المسرحية هي رحلة داخل انسان من خلال واقع مجتمعي و ليس بفكر فلسفي و تدور المسرحية بين اربع شخصيات اساسية بطل المسرحية الزوج و زوجته الاولي و الثانية و ابنته من الزوجة الاولي,
قد يكون تخيلي ان جاز لي ان الخص المسرحية في بضع كلمات فسوف استعين باقتباس مباشر من المسرحية علي لسان احدي الشخصيات مخاطبا الشخصية الاساسية محور المسرحية فيقول " لديك اقذر عقل رأيته في رأس رجل متعلم" كعادتي بالطبع مع ميللر فهو خارج التقييم ... المسرحية بالطبع رائعة

Para mí Arthur Miller nunca decepciona, pero me queda claro que lo suyo no era escribir personajes femeninos. En este caso presenta una historia por demás trillada: un hombre que tiene dos esposas que se conocen cuando llaman a ambas al hospital porque él tuvo un accidente, el mismo problema, calcado, lo he visto en novelas de Televisa. De cualquier forma, el personaje de Miller intenta justificarse como un cazador, un alma libre que quería tener las dos vidas opuestas que le ofrecían sus dos esposas, de personalidades completamente distintas (mismo argumento he visto en Televisa), y parece intentar hablar sobre el autoconocimiento, el miedo a la soledad, el egoísmo, pero siempre sin ninguna consideración de los personajes femeninos, que parecen no tener un gramo de dignidad, amor propio o inteligencia.

La narración es amena, se lee fácilmente en una sentada, pero es mejor ver el capítulo de Rubí donde las esposas de su suegro se encuentran, es la misma historia, con el mismo desenlace y contada más rápida.

This was a confusing read. I like the themes in the novel and the obvious overtones of what it tries to present in terms of Nietzsche's ideas of being "beyond" good and evil and how Lyman Felt tries to transcend the norms of monogamy by submitting to his "truth" of sexual desire and a kind of positivist living. Same for the difference between "righteous" (conformist) and "unrighteous" (non-conformist? rebellious?). I also like it's Kierkegaardian ideas on confronting anxiety rather than masking it over with a sort of deceptive "truth." Yet, in all, these ideas fell flat because they weren't as cohesive as they could be - and though people tended to say that it reached a form of suspended judgment (let's say aporia), which was a positive resolution. What I really liked though, was how we empathised with Lyman as a person and even come close to being couched in a position of agreement.

3.5/5. Enjoyable read but eventually felt directionless. Miller's other plays are just too good, which is why this was even bumped down.

Marriage as an institution in the Western world appears to have become even more dysfunctional since Arthur Miller authored “The Ride Down Mt. Morgan” in 1991. In today’s climate, unstable families are almost the norm, and Lyman Felt would emerge as a rare archetype of an alpha male who can juggle and support multiple women and families simultaneously. As such, I wonder how the rest of men—who barely have or are able to support a family—feel about the relevance of his luxurious lifestyle. Still, the play stimulates contemplation on the significance of monogamy, the interplay between love and happiness, and the tension between being truthful to personal authenticity and societal expectations.

In 2000 I saw Patrick Stewart in this play on Broadway at the Ambassador Theater. I found it odd that I mostly remembered Stewart doing a lot of roaring, so I thought I’d refresh my memory. And now I see why the histrionics were more memorable than the Arthur Miller play.

Wealthy Lyman tempts fate too much, crashing his car on an icy mountain road. At the hospital he finds he has also smashed his bigamously-structured tightrope-walking life. He can’t have it all, so of course he roars. And of course I found it tiresome.

Il libro non mi ha entusiasmata più di tanto.
La storia narrata era in parte complessa, passava dal passato al presente in maniera quasi forzata.
Il comportamento tenuto dal protagonista non mi è per niente piaciuto, ed è forse questo che mi ha fatto piacere meno il libro.
È un comportamento da classico personaggio 'comico'. Inizialmente può far sorridere ma dopo si passa a una riflessione e si vede come non sia così bello come atteggiamento.

La obra parte de una premisa interesante, un hombre que ha llevado dos vidas y las protagonistas de las mismas se encuentran en un hospital, ya que él ha tenido un accidente.

Pero... Bueno, he leído en varias reseñas y estoy de acuerdo en que los personajes femeninos tienen muy pero que muy poco desarrollo, el del personaje masculino quizá demasiado...

Y aparte de eso el estar "a trozos" hace que sea un tanto mareo.

میلر تلاش می‌کنه تا کاری کنه مخاطب با دیدگاه فردی که در نگاه اول «خیانتکار» تلقی میشه سمپات بشه. نوعی سمپاتی که شاید خواننده رو به این تخیل بندازه که حتی به فرد خبیث داستان حق بده اما محقش ندونه.

سیر درام در این نمایشنامه پیش نمیره بلکه فقط ما شناخت عمیق‌تری از شخصیت‌ها بدست میاریم(بدون اینکه کنشی داشته باشند )
