Alex Washoe (they/them) is a nonbinary writer, game designer, and full-time pet parent living in Seattle, WA. In previous incarnations, they have been a bookseller, a wildlife rehab care assistant, a dog walker at a companion animal shelter, a public speaker, an amateur stand-up comedian, and many other less interesting things. Alex is prone to sudden, seemingly random enthusiasms — the list currently includes birdwatching, baking, running, hair dye … and of course writing. Writing is always job one.
I wanted to like this so much more than I did. I really enjoyed the previous installment, but this one I found irritating and both lacking and yet over-explained with things I really didn't care about. Meaning I had to stop several times, and take breaks, just to force myself to continue - which is very unusual for me. I think the issue is too much of everything overall, which stretches things too thin, but then also becomes tedious.
There's far too many characters, too many plot points running concurrently, but also too much backstory and history to have to go over as well. I felt like we were jumping around so dang much. I never really got the chance to truly know any of the characters and the full connections they had, or the lives they lead, as clearly as I would have liked. They all felt very one-dimensional.
Also, honestly, I found a lot of the choices herein to be ridiculous, and for dramas sake. Things said and done that the characters are far too smart to do/say, and yet they do them anyway, causing you frustration as a reader. You can't portray your characters as having so much ingenuity and smarts one minute, but then completely clueness the next. It screams of being forced.
I really like this author a lot and think they have some excellent story ideas, but this one definitely needed a fair few more going's over in the editing department, and streamlining down to really make it a cohesive and readable entity overall.
Of course this is all my personal opinion and I do not wish to be a downer in any way, or to influence anyone in the negative, just try it for yourself, as always on KU.
I think this series is great and am looking forward to another. Hopefully there is another. I really like the time traveling in this series and am looking forward to what happens next. The world building Is great as are all the characters. There is even some character redemption happening. I do recommend the series but start with the first in the series.
Alex Washoe makes me laugh and sit up and pay attention! This love story is glorious (especially if you have read the other books with these characters) and improbable and exciting. How a 21st century soul searching ex-cop and and a 19th century doctor meet up and fall in love keeps your attention and your heart. Throw in Vanyr and dwarves and lead in the water all play together is why you should read this one.
Britt Halliday is on a soul searching sojourn when she hears a woman screaming and runs to help. She rescues Dr. Agnes Sheedy from a group of ruffians. Then she is thrown back into time to 1887. A time travel adventure and romance. Wonderful series.
I have enjoyed this newest book based on the characters that Alex has created with Britt traveling back in time to the wild west and found her true love and her stead.
