“It’s as if my heart no longer belongs to me. It ceased to be mine the moment I met you. So… how could you call yourself nothing? How could you be nothing?”

😭😭😭😭

This entire last instalment was heavy and upsetting, and I forgot how painful the last few chapters were. The last few paragraphs 😢 This is one of the only books that has ever made me cry. One of the most heartbreaking things I’ve ever read, but it was definitely for the best. They are both so broken and so incredibly similar sometimes (without them realising). Their relationship had become incredibly unhealthy and I’m glad Maxi saw that. Also glad she’s making progress to love herself. Riftan, my heart broke for him but he needs to learn certain parts of his behaviour are unacceptable. (Don’t worry, you’ve got this, I believe in you!!)

I’m so excited to get to read book 2 very soon, and of course Riftan’s past story (another angst fest). I know all this suffering and angst will pay off lol I SURVIVED THE MONTHS OF HEARTBREAK! Nearly there!

That 🪑 scene though!! Truly amazing!

If the book ends here it would be utter cruelty 😅. Does anyone know if there is going to be a season 1(6) or season 2?

That last chapter killed me. Though I know Maxi made the right choice for both of them, I just hope the story continues.

Well. I’m crying.

I discovered this story as a comic on the Manta app. Needing more, I found the entire novel series to read on Kindle.

I love these characters and this story. I adore Ruth and Ulyseon especially. So much of this book has highlights in it because I see parallels from my own relationships and struggles within it. I hope to be able to purchase this book in print someday. I’ve neglected my responsibilities reading it because I couldn’t get enough. I look forward to the next release.

A lot happened in this part, including several things I've been waiting the entire series for, or just about.

I loved that Maxi and Riftan finally started talking to each other and being more direct and honest. I wasn't expecting this series to dig into the unhealthy aspects of their relationship so much - considering that it did, I'm especially glad that Maxi made the choice she did. Riftan, in an effort to change her mind, engaged in some nasty emotional manipulation at the end (granted, he was drunk at the time, and it sounds like he's also had his share of childhood trauma, but still) - nothing good would have come from him succeeding.

I'm curious (and a little nervous) to see how Kim will structure the rest of the series. Sadly, it looks like I've only got a side story and the first part of Season 2 after this - I'm not sure when or if more will be available in English. I plan to dive right into the side story, but I may let the first part of Season 2 sit unread for a while.

1st reread

This book had no right to be so utterly devastating. Maxi and Riftan have been through too much to be so young. The two have aged decades in just a few short months. The possessiveness of Riftan that I was so fond of has turned into obsession. I will say it is not often you see an author write someone as a true human being. Riftan and Maximilian are flawed creatures hell-bent on destroying one another.

What is there to talk about? So much happened my head is spinning. Riftan has completely lost his mind and I can't blame him. Even his comrades had to jump through hoops to keep Maximilian safe so that Riftan didn’t destroy the whole continent in his rage. I have never seen a mortal possessed with such God-like abilities. My skin prickled at his silent fury.

There was barely a chapter when I didn't have a lump in my throat. The twists and turns kept me up in bed reading till my eyes burned. Just unrelenting despair. Maxi is now one of them, her Knights. She has proven herself time and time again and no one can deny her. The curtains have been drawn, she has been weighed and found virtuous. Maximilian has grown so much she is almost unrecognizable. I am so proud she finally did something for herself.

Geez I think I highlighted half this book on Kindle. Hell, I just wanted to remember every minute of it. Even the second time around I was crying. The small look into Hebarons POV was everything and the ending shattered my soul into a thousand pieces. This story will forever hold a place in my heart.

-----Endless Quotes-----

“It would be too dangerous for us to return now, my lady. I am sorry, but your safety is our priority.” “I-I am not that important! I’m not the lofty noblewoman you think—”

Maxi’s face flushed when she realized that he was looking at the coin. “I-I’m sorry for not taking better care… o-of something so important…”

Just as Ruth’s hand was about to reach her, Riftan screamed out loud.
“Keep your hands away from her!”
Riftan broke away from the other knights’ hold, shoved them, and ran to her at once, harshly pushing away Ruth’s arm. Max shuddered and hunched at the sight of him completely losing his reason and engulfed in anger. Ruth also flinched for his life at his vicious demeanor and then spoke cautiously as if he was appeasing an enraged beast.
“Please calm down. Shouldn’t I cast healing magic upon the lady?”
Riftan didn’t even seem to understand Ruth’s words. His pupils were dark, dilated, and clouded as if he was possessed by a ghost. His ashen face was strangely distorted. Ruth approached her cautiously as if trying not to aggravate him as much as possible.
“I won’t touch her. I’m just trying to cast a healing spell.”

“I… have had you in my thoughts for a very long time.” Maxi froze and looked up at him. With his arms limp at his sides, he seemed in a daze. “You were always on my mind. Even when you knew nothing of my existence… I only thought of you.”

“I felt hollow and miserable the more I saw you… But I couldn’t stop.” His lip quivered slightly. “I kept telling myself to quit. The more I thought of you, the lonelier I felt. Even surrounded by people, I was alone. Give up, I told myself. What’s the point of wanting something you can’t have? That’s what I resolved to do, over and over… But my eyes would always seek you before I even realized it.” He pressed his fist on his forehead and squeezed his eyes shut. “It’s as if my heart no longer belongs to me. It ceased to be mine the moment I met you. So… how could you call yourself nothing? How could you be nothing?”

“When I was alone, I would imagine sitting at a table with you, just the two of us. I wanted to hold banquets as grand as your father’s… No, even grander, and make sure you had your fill of the finest cuisines every day. You’ve no idea how many times I imagined your eyes shining in the candlelight, your content smile… How I wished you’d raise your head to look at me just—”

Caressing his cheek, Maxi whispered in a quivering voice, “W-When I was young… I prayed every day… for the most g-gallant knight in the world t-to appear… and take me away from my father’s castle. I prayed f-for someone to come… a-and stop him from punishing me…” When she forced a smile on her lips, Riftan’s eyes grew visibly pained. She stroked his tousled hair and kissed his forehead. “Y-You… were the answer to my prayers. You are… my hero.”

This man, who had faced terrifying monsters without batting an eye, appeared to be afraid of a woman less than half his size. His jaw strained as he clenched his teeth before he looked away. “No, I can’t. I can’t promise that I’ll be gentle. I would no doubt take you like a frenzied beast—”

“Was I haughty?” he asked, furrowing his brow. Tilting her chin high, Maxi summoned the most arrogant expression she could. “You used to look at people like this… w-whenever someone spoke to you.” “I had no idea I looked so adorable,” said Riftan, chuckling.

“You were scared out of your wits by my declaration of war, and you probably thought you would never regain your peace of mind unless you had my fiefdom taken from me. But you are mistaken. If I am no longer bound by pledges or treaties, I’ll be free to show you just how deranged I really am.”
“I have a knack for sneaking into places. And you cannot even begin to imagine the unspeakable things I did as a mercenary. Do you know what that means? It means that the fear of not knowing whether each night could be your last will never allow you to rest peacefully. When you open your eyes in the morning, the first thing you’ll do is to check that your head is still attached to your neck. Whenever you leave your castle, you’ll seek out the corners where I might be hiding, lying in wait to ambush you. If you’re prepared to live like that for the rest of your life…” Riftan fixed his gaze on the duke as his words sunk in. He slowly added, “Then, by all means, do as you wish.”

Riftan had no qualms about destroying himself over anything concerning Maxi, while she was possessed by the perpetual temptation to cling to him and hide from the outside world. Left to continue, he would suffocate her, and she would drag his future through the mud. They would destroy each other in the name of love.

“I lied.” Droplets spattered the wooden planks. With his arms restraining Riftan, Hebaron blinked dazedly. He did not think the commander was even aware that he was crying. Riftan appeared to be in a trance as he mumbled, “I lied… when I said I wouldn’t wait for you.”

RIFTEN’s PASSION WILL NEVER FADE AWAY BRO IS OBVIOUSLY OBSESSED WITH HER

My heart! Oh the pain! It has become so tightly woven around the lives of Riftan and Maxi that it beats and bleeds as theirs do.

I love Riftan- his fierce protectiveness, his deep and boundless devotion to Maxi, his consuming love. Even though it pushes it's way into obsessiveness, it's clear that his life has been tied to Maxi's for longer and more adently then she could ever guess.

I love Maxi. Watching her timidness melt away with Riftan's tender actions and passion has been rewarding. Knowing she had the inner strength to be more than an abuse survivor with a stutter. Witnessing her finding her true self is a great reward.

Their relationship reminds me of a quote from Lao Tzu: Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength while loving someone deeply gives you courage.
(My current favorite quote. 💜)

I've been reading book 2 on ridibooks as an authorized web publisher but as it's in Korean and translated to English through Google, it's rough but worth it. I can't wait for Amazon to get the translations. I feel like my heart is busted into a million pieces right now.

In which they finally talk to each other, truths too long hidden come out, and Riftan reacts...predictably badly. I'm proud of Maxi for the decisions she makes at the end of this volume, because if she'd kept the status quo, her marriage would have slid down into the danger zone, although to be honest, I think it already lives there. It's tricky, because Suji Kim is clearly basing things on a Medieval society, which would put Riftan in the "dream husband" category - it's only to modern eyes that things look bad.

OMG

Just peak fiction.

With this book I finally finish the first part of the story. And I feel the plot was growing slowly, with every book I was more invested in and this last book concluded with all the things happening with the war and principal conflicts put it in since the beginning.
I really love Maxi's courage through the story cause she needed to show everyone else who was her and her capacities as a mage. She grew up a lot, she's our real hero from the story and that makes me feel so proud of her.
Even Riftan was more available to listen to her and the way they opened up to each other made me feel so in love with them. Nevertheless his attitude is something he really needs to improve on, and I think this is something we'll see in the next part.
Just to conclude, I was so invested in the plot that I couldn't stop reading, and that's something that didn't happen to me a long time ago. And the final plot I didn't see it to come.

I discovered the incredible story Under the Oak Tree by Suji Kim through the comic adaptation. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down until I finished all the available chapters. The last chapter I read ended on a nail-biting cliffhanger, with Riftan heading to war and leaving Maxi at the Basilica in Livadon.

Desperate to know how it all unfolds, I decided to dive into books 4 and 5 of Volume 1. It’s been a long time since a book has captivated me like this. I read it obsessively, day and night. This story is truly remarkable, and I feel like I'll never be the same person again.

Unlike typical fairy tales, this story presents Riftan and Maxi as two flawed characters, struggling to find their way forward together. It’s rare for me to get invested in fantasy stories involving magic, but this book completely changed my perspective. The depiction of magic, magical creatures, and monsters is nothing short of brilliant.

From the very beginning, I desperately waited for the moment when Maxi would open up to Riftan and share the truth about her scarred childhood. The more I read, the more I understood her struggles. It was incredibly difficult for a woman with such low self-esteem, who felt utterly unworthy in front of her husband, to reveal her true self. She clung to the fragile identity Riftan had of her—a pampered, delicate noblewoman—because breaking that illusion meant risking the hatred of the one person in the world she cared about. All she wanted was to love him and be loved in return.

Some might argue that Riftan’s actions are entirely unjust, but I respectfully disagree. Knowing Riftan’s past, understanding what Maximilian meant to him, and considering the immense hardships he endured to finally call her his wife and be with her, it’s hard to fault him for his behavior—it actually makes perfect sense.

Riftan sees Maxi as a fragile noblewoman, and given everything that has transpired, it’s understandable that he struggles to see beyond that perception. His self-reproach is palpable, especially in the moment when he says, “He was late. He has always been late....” To me, this reflects how deeply he blames himself for not being there for Maxi when she needed him.

I absolutely loved the moments when they finally opened up to each other, exposing their vulnerabilities after returning from Cryoso Castle, with Maxi’s dark past laid bare. Those scenes where they revealed their true selves were so tender and raw. But, unfortunately, that peace was short-lived. The Duke of Croyso remains the most detestable character in the entire story for me.

Yes, his love for her has transformed into an all-consuming obsession, to the extent that he neglected his duties as the Lord of Anatol and as the Commander of the Remdragon Knights. I don't blame Riftan, instead, I feel what he's going through. Riftan is someone who has never relied on anyone but himself, and as the story unfolds—particularly in the revelations about his past—in the last chapter of book 5 it becomes clear why he was so against it and his harsh behavior towards Maxi. The final conversation between Riftan and Maxi in Book 5 is nothing short of phenomenal. The tension between them is so raw and genuine that I could feel every ounce of it.

As the story progressed from book 1 to 5, the growth of each character becomes crystal clear, especially Ursuline Ricaydo. His decision to volunteer as Maxi’s escort to Drachium and the way he becomes so protective of her after the incident at Cryoso Castle is nothing short of heartwarming.

The scene at Anatol Port, where the knights share a heartfelt conversation with Lady Calypse before her departure to Nornui, is particularly moving. It’s a moment so emotional and beautifully written that it could bring tears to anyone’s eyes.

The depth of these relationships and the evolution of the characters add so much richness to the story, making it truly unforgettable. This story is a masterpiece.

Now, time for some of my favorite snippets from this beautiful book....

“You were always on my mind. Even when you knew nothing of my existence… I only thought of you.”

“It’s as if my heart no longer belongs to me. It ceased to be mine the moment I met you. So… how could you call yourself nothing? How could you be nothing?”

“Th-Then… what should I do for you?”
“Nothing… I just need you to stay by my side.” Crestfallen, Maxi’s eyes drooped to the floor. For the first time in her life, she realized just how miserable it could be to have nothing expected of her.

"Riftan’s eyes grew cold.
‘Do you want me to lock you up?’ he snarled with a fury equal to hers.
Maxi gazed back in shock before her expression turned steely. ‘A-Are you saying you will do as my father did?’"
(I screamed when I read this. Literally.)

“I’ve learned that it’s better to keep you in my sight so I can stop you from doing the next reckless thing.”
“Nothing good ever came from leaving you behind. For my sanity’s sake, I’ll keep you where I can see you.”

If I am no longer bound by pledges or treaties, I’ll be free to show you just how deranged I really am.I have a knack for sneaking into places. If you’re prepared to live like that for the rest of your life… Then, by all means, do as you wish."

“A-Are you in your right mind?” Maxi yelled. “O-Or have you gone completely insane?!” “That’s right!” He grabbed her as she went to move further away and forced her to look at him. “Nothing else matters more than having you by my side. I can build walls and amass riches as many times as necessary. Tell me to do it a thousand times, and I will!”

“You don’t know what it’s like for a day to feel like a year, and a year like an eternity. Nor what it’s like to count the seconds, yearning for that person… Only someone who has no idea would ask that of me.”

“How can you expect me to live with my head held high… a-after taking everything from you? Marrying me… h-has brought you… n-nothing good… You had to fight in a campaign you didn’t want… and face harrowing ordeals… A-And now, you stand to lose everything… Y-Your knighthood, estate, fortune, your comrades… How can I turn a blind eye?!” “I told you, it doesn’t matter. Not to me! As long as I have you, nothing else matters!”

Riftan had no qualms about destroying himself over anything concerning Maxi, while she was possessed by the perpetual temptation to cling to him and hide from the outside world. Left to continue, he would suffocate her, and she would drag his future through the mud. They would destroy each other in the name of love.

“You are… n-nothing like her. You will… never be miserable. I will… I will be back before you know it. And then… I will never… leave again. Ever… I swear.” “I’m at my limit.”

“If you leave,” said Riftan, “I’ll no longer wait for you. I’ll stop thinking about you. This time, I’ll wipe you from my mind. I’ll stop making myself miserable.” Maxi gaped at him, stunned. He grabbed her forearm and, putting heavy emphasis on each word, said, “Will you still leave me then?”

“I lied… when I said I wouldn’t wait for you.”

I am absolutely in love with Suji Kim’s writing. It’s moments like these—lines that cut so deep—that leave me shattered. The depth of emotion and the complexity of her storytelling are truly phenomenal. I’m at a complete loss for words.

This series has been so captivating that I was able to read all 5 books within a week!

I have never liked books with sex scenes, but these books just seemed different and I am glad I read them.

I began with the Manga and when a membership was required to read more than the first few pages, I searched out this book and was happier with the written out story (I usually don’t read mangas anyway).

To be honest, I almost threw my phone mad at Maxi’s choices towards the end, but once you reach the end of the epilogue it just brings it back together.

I can’t wait to find out if a book 6 is coming!

This book was infuriating, frustrating and heartbreaking. The miscommunication through out the series has been so frustrating, but surprisingly easy to read. I love the way all of these books have been written so far, and Maximillians progress with her stutter and confidence has been so amazing to read and experience.
I'm so happy we finally got some insight into Riftans past, but the epilouge broke my heart into a million pieces. I cannot wait to see their relationship grow, and both of them work through their traumas
