Skyline Zoo is Chicago's newest attraction, filling the top three floors of a skyscraper. It has everything you could ask for: lions and tigers and bears. Jordan Clay and her friends are here for an all-night field trip; the students have the zoo to themselves, and they even get to camp out on the floor. It should be the funnest night of the school year.
But someone has other plans for them. In a single moment of horror and panic, everything changes. Jordan and her friends find themselves trapped inside the zoo, while every cage is opened wide. Now it will take all their wits and courage to survive the night. The food chain is no fun when you're suddenly not at the top of it.
At an amusement park, a lady takes control of a ride, intending to ransom the lives of the rider for the release of her son from prison, where he no doubt belongs. A teen girl manages to foil the scheme, but the criminal escapes.
Some months later, there is a field trip to a unique zoo, where everything is controlled electronically. You can guess what happens. The girl and some cohorts have to survive the horrors to follow.
I'm a big fan of Patrick Lee books and, for selfish reasons, was very disappointed to see that he's decided to focus on YA for now - I want more Sam Dryden or Travis Chase!! That still didn't stop me from immediately buying this ebook when he announced its release. I read a decent amount of YA books each year so I dove right in and read this in a day.
I could write an entire review on all the implausibility's in this story which really required a huge suspension of belief to keep me reading. However, I'm going to try to look at this through the eyes of a 13 year old, aka the intended audience, and give it a 4 star rating based on that perspective. The story was engaging and moved fast. Jordan was a smart, level headed heroine who will appeal to both boys and girls. The story is very tense at times and had me rushing to turn the page to find out what happens next. Definitely the sign of a good story. There are a few moments where animals attack humans and each other so if young readers are sensitive to this sort of thing, they may want to skip or wait until they are older to read this book.
All in all, this is a great entry level thriller for tweens and early teens.
Wild Night is action specialist Patrick Lee’s first YA novel, and it’s a non-stop thrill ride: clever and suspenseful, with a promising new teen heroine.
Basically the concourse scene from Jurassic Park, extended into a 3-story zoo at the top of a skyscraper with a handful of middle school kids for 200 pages. Frantic pacing and no down time makes this a super fast read.
I've read all of Patrick Lee's novels, this is an excellent addition to the list. Good plot, interesting characters, and exciting circumstances add up to a Great YA read. Highly recommended
I will give it 4 stars reading it from a prospective of a 13 year old child. Heroine and a lot of action. Totally unbelievable. As a 58 year old woman who loves to read all genre, including YA, I give it 3 stars. It was good enough for me to give Patrick Lee’s adult novels a try.
WILD NIGHT by Patrick Lee is a young adult book which I didn’t realize when I bought it. I have long been a fan of Mr. Lee’s books from THE BREACH and the three Sam Dryden books in which two were excellent, RUNNER AND SIGNAL. These books combined science fiction of the highest imagination with a mystery-thriller theme making for entertaining reading.
WILD NIGHT may be for middle school kids but the book still was full of tension and excitement. The newest attraction in Chicago is a zoo on the top floors of a skyscraper and on a school field trip, the cages were unlocked and the animals roamed free, with 4 school kids trapped inside the zoo. The book introduces a strong-willed girl and it is her wits that face off against a master criminal who seeks revenge. With each chapter ending in a cliff hanger, the story moves fast and furious. Five stars!
Jurassic Park meets Die Hard in a PG rated young adult action thriller.
If you go in knowing that this is for younger readers and maintain that expectation, you will enjoy it.
If you’re familiar with Lee and are expecting something along the lines of Runner (one of the best and easier thriller reads ever, imo) then you’ll be disappointed.
I get the feeling that Lee started this idea out as a full fledged adult thriller, but could never get the pieces to fit so he decided to just make it YA and not let the idea go to waste.
LOVE all Patrick Lee’s books and thsi one was soooo awesome! I couldn’t put it down! Loved every moment of this story and loved the terrific characters!! It was a real treat to read a great story and have zero bad swear words! Hope more come out by Patrick Lee!! Hasn’t been a book by him in a very long time-too long!!! More please!!!
This book was awesome! A very intense and terrifying visit to a very unique zoo. Tons of action and frighteningly vivid writing! I’m at the point where I will buy any book Patrick Lee writes. I just love this author!
The story is cool. Would make a great movie. I liked the description of the animals exhibits. Quite different of the author's other books. Still enjoyable to read.
I thought Patrick Lee's first six books were tremendous.
I did not know that "Wild Night" was a YA book when I bought it. Still...it was a pretty fun read, along the lines of "Die Hard at the Zoo" or "Jurassic Park" without the faux science.
This was a quick read and more meant for the YA crowd, but I still really enjoyed it. Patrick Lee knows how to keep you turning the pages! Looking forward to more from him! (Be sure to read his Sam Dryden novels and Travis Chase novels for more non-stop action s as nd intrigue!
