A queer, standalone, cozy mystery romance with tons of food cravings, tea-loving, and found family vibes that smashes toxic masculinity and serves up warm, fuzzy feels every step of the way. Falcon Smoke’s image graces posters all over the city, touting him as the shining new hope for Springhaven. Yet every time Falcon sees those pictures of himself he feels like more of a sham. He tries to lead by example as a good and just Enforcer, but it’s hard to do right within a broken system. The cost of his fame has forced Falcon to leave his family home and move into a small house he can only afford with the help of another young gent by the name of Keene.
A handsome and self-confident man, Keene fills their new home with wonderful aromas of his delicious tea blends and the scrumptious meals he makes for his catering clients. Seeing Falcon’s need to lie low, Keene does his best to ensure his housemate feels safe, warm, and protected.
Fate, however, is not so kind. The Enforcer order is undergoing reform and many are calling for Falcon to drive their initiatives. Thankfully, Falcon has some much-deserved leave time coming up, and he plans to take full advantage of it by spending time with his handsome housemate. Unfortunately, before they can kick off their vacation, their home is robbed.
Knowing that involving the Enforcers means condemning the perpetrators to a lifetime of imprisonment and torture, Falcon and Keene decide to solve the case themselves. While Falcon would prefer to handle this matter alone, Keene refuses to be left out. The two grow closer throughout the investigation, with sparks of romance igniting between them. But when someone notifies the Enforcers of the crime, Falcon is forced to choose where he’ll throw the considerable weight of his support.
Fans of cozy mysteries full of sweet romance, witty interactions, and gripping suspense are sure to love Falcon’s Favor by Dana Fraedrich! Also recommended for anyone who's enjoyed Mackenzi Lee's Montague Siblings series (A Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue, A Ladies' Guide to Petticoats and Piracy); Gail Carriger's Parasol Protectorate series, Finishing School series, and Custard Protocol series; and/or Garth Nix's Old World (Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen, Clariel, etc.). Those readers will delight as this Victorian-era-esque world unfolds before them. A multi-layered steampunk fantasy tale of colorful characters and subterfuge that promises to entrance. Series Note: Falcon's Favor is a standalone story in the captivating, young adult, steampunk fantasy series, Broken Gears (despite being listed as the fourth in the series).
Dana Fraedrich is a dog lover, self-professed geek, and author of the steampunk fantasy series Broken Gears, which includes the Amazon bestseller, "Out of the Shadows." Dana's books are full of secrets and colorful characters that examine the many shades of grey that paint the world.

Falcon’s Favor is a sweet and charming queer mystery set in a steampunk fantasy world. Falcon is an Enforcer (similar to a police officer) who has recently become estranged from his upper crust family, forcing him to move out to a rough neighborhood with a roommate, Keene. The attraction is there from the start, and when their home us broken into, they grow even closer as they investigate.
Although part of an established series (which I haven’t read), this can definitely be read as a standalone as it is mostly a side story to the events of the main series. Although wider things are happening in the background or has happened in the past, the story here is set apart enough to stand on its own and the book provides adequate background information to not feel lost. The mystery is smaller and more intimate, so not really a part of the grand scheme of things, indeed making this a cozy mystery.
The prose is excellent and fits the setting (even with a few more modern turns of phrases). Falcon is charming and wins you over instantly with his grit in the face of his own disability and his nobility in character while his fish-out-of-water experience in his sudden change in lifestyle and status just adds to his charm. Meanwhile, Keene contrasts and complements him with his more carefree and open personality. The romance, while slow, builds as their friendship grows, and it really brought a smile to my face.
Falcon’s Favor is a charming and cozy mystery with a sweet gay romance.
*I was provided an ARC via BookSirens in exchange for an honest review.
Folks, this was like a hug in a book. I love the men and their budding romance. I love the pug. I love the cosy warmth of it all.
I was immediately invested in Falcon and Keene. They are so damn adorably sweet that I'm surprised my teeth haven't fallen out.
I also loved seeing how Falcon struggled against his upbringing, how he tried to become a better man, struggling with even small mundane things and taught prejudice and trying hard to do better.
But most of all, I loved how the romance developed.
Next time you're having a bad day and need comfort, pick this up. It'll make you feel better.
My thanks to the author for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a delightful cozy steampunk romance. And while yes it could be read as a Standalone I feel I might have gotten the 'world' a bit better had I read others in this series. Didn't detract from my enjoyment just makes me want to read Broken Gears Trilogy.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I had the pleasure to read an ARC thanks to booksiren, all thoughts are mine !! Absolutely wholesome and adorable and cozy. This was like fluff injected directly into my veins. Was is perfect ? No. WAS IT CUTE? YES. Loved it and 100% recommend you all to check it out
ENG- So well well well... well this is a cozy "fantasy" mystery that I really liked. The universe takes place in a revisited Victorian era and this fourth volume comes after several tragic and important events. However, even without having read the previous volumes, we quickly enter the universe and the action and we mainly focus on the character of Falcon.
The novel is entirely from his point of view, which allows us to assimilate the events and the context. I really had a great time reading this novel which takes us to the town of Springhaven which is slowly recovering from its injuries. Falcon belongs to the order of Enforcers who do not really have a good reputation and will do anything to change things.
He's a really endearing character. I really liked seeing him take responsibility for his actions even if he finds himself in a complicated situation today. It was interesting to watch him discover everyday life without servants to do basic tasks like cooking or washing clothes.
Facing him, the character of Keene is touching in his openness to others, his kindness and his pragmatic side. I loved watching them open up to each other and gently seduce each other. I really liked the universe depicted by the author. The secondary characters bring a lot to the story and suggest a very well-mastered saga and a rich universe.
The investigation is well conducted, it takes its time to lead to an outcome worthy of the genre. I let myself be carried away by the pen of the author, her characters and her universe.
A more than pleasant novel that I strongly recommend.
My Review I received a copy of this book from BookSirens. The book is already out. Falcon is a bit of a grump, and his inner monologue was interesting. It had me rolling my eyes one second and laughing the next. My first thought upon meeting him was what happened to force him to move into a house that from the description has seen better days. I did, of course, find out, but was intrigued enough to keep reading. Compared to Falcon, Keene is Mr. sunshine. The man always seems to have a rather beautiful smile on his face and all the neighbors seem to love him. He and Falcon become housemates and slowly start building a friendship. Happy dances for forced-proximity. Things become more interesting when the two find they’ve been robbed one evening. Now they have to figure out who robbed them and why. This book was truly delightful. The descriptions, in my opinion, were beautifully done. I could truly see the scenes as I was reading. Falcon and Keene were perfect balances for each other. I could have done with a little more steamy scenes but that me. All in all, really good book. Will I read more by Dana Fraedrich? Yes, I had fun reading this. Will I read more of the series? I will, this was good, sweet reading with a dash of mystery and a hint of steam. Until next time peace and happy reading.
I recieved a free advance copy and am voluntarily providing an honest review.
Positives: - I found the setting really interesting! This is billed as a standalone within the world of another series, which I haven't read. This window into it has made me really want to pick up the first in the series proper! - Both main characters are endearing have strong characterisation. They're sweet <3 - The writing style is really solid and engaging. A comfy reading experience.
Negatives: - Although it's a standalone, I really did feel I was missing out on some significant background or setting points. Things get alluded to which I sometimes found frustrating as I wanted to know more! More reasons to pick up the series?! - The plot felt a little thin to me. I'm starting to suspect I don't like historical romances which I promise is related - individual choices and plot threads relating to wider society just didn't land with me that well. I appreciated the steampunk twist to things but the expectations and situations the characters found themselves in just didn't land strongly with me.
Tldr - A solid read and romance which would probably land well with people familiar to the established Canon or love historical romance.
A queer, cosy, steampunk mystery romance is not something I would have thought would be on my reading list this year, but when it comes from the pen of Dana Fraedrich count me in. I've loved everyone of Dana's stories set in the steampunk world of Springhaven and this one was no exception.
Falcon and Keene finds themselves thrust together as room mates when Falcon's family disowns him. But when a robbery of their meagre belongings threatens to derail their new life, Falcon, newly appointed Steward of the Sage of the recently formed Enforcer movement, the CRU, decides to do a little sleuthing of his own. A delightful pathway of discoveries awaits with a host of engaging minor characters. And Falcon also uncovers something else, something much more personal.
Beautifully crafted with real flavours of the Victorian age, this gem of a story can't fail to make you smile. Because Falcon and Keene, tea and cakes, flowers and Luffy, the most adorable sidekick.
If you'd like a warm hug of a book to cuddle up with this autumn this one is for you!
"If you and those around you are on fire, you cannot extinguish their flames without putting yourself out first"
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Review: This book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone. A queer mystery romance full of fluff between two housemates - Falcon Smoke an Enforcer (who hates ducks), and Keene Kohli - trying to find who stole their furniture. The book was well detailed, to the point that every back story is explained so no one reading it as a standalone is confused about past events or the bigger issue in their world. The first half was really slow paced to the point that I wanted to stop reading but it picked up its pace and it became really interesting that I read it in one sitting. The plot was a bit weak, I feel like if I read the entire series I would have understood more of it and many plot holes would have been clarified.
Interaction from the book: ○ "Don't call me ducky. Ducks are horrible creatures-" ● "Ducks are delicious creatures"

Falcon’s Favor by Dana Fraedrich is part of a series, Broken Gears, but the author calls it a stand-alone and I agree. Falcon, needing to leave his family home, meets his new housemate Keene. Much to Falcon’s benefit, Keene is an amazing cook while Falcon can’t boil an egg. What I enjoyed about these two was how their relationship evolved while they were trying to solve their robbery and Falcon was dealing with his concerns about being an Enforcer. It made their falling for each other seem much more organic and the reader got a fuller picture of the world of Springhaven. While I enjoy books set in pseudo-Victorian England, what won me over was a line from p. 19: forty-ish men, most of them also young and therefore predominantly stupid. My only complaint was a few anachronisms, but overall I want to see what the author writes next. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was cute! A sweet, cozy romance with lots of tasty treats and a special tea for every situation. Keene and Falcoln could not have been more polar opposites: where Kenne was warm, Falcoln was shy; where Kenne was experienced, Falcoln was sheltered; and most importantly, where Kenne was a caterer, Falcoln was an Enforcer. Enforcers have a long history of being corrupt and cruel to the people they are supposedly meant to be protecting and Falcoln is trying desperately to change that, but when he becomes a victim to a crime himself he struggles with what is truly right and wrong and is it even possible to be a good Enforcer to the people when the entire system itself is horribly corrupt? Falcoln's Favor was a fun mystery with political intrigue and witty banter, full of warm moments and deliciously sweet romance. It was an enjoyable story from start to finish.

I cannot say enough good things about this story. It’s everything I didn’t know I needed from a queer, cosy romance with steampunk vibes and a mystery to solve, and Falcon and Keene are, quite honestly, delightful. There’s sweetness and care and charm all over these pages, as well as some gentle humor and the gradual formation of a beautiful dynamic between two people who, despite (or perhaps because of) their differences in background and approaches, fit together in seriously compelling ways. I do think this story can work as a standalone (I hadn’t read previous works in the series, and I didn’t feel lost) but I can say that reading this book has definitely inspired me to check out the others now. *I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.*
This is the first book I've read from this author. And it's definitely made me want to check out the rest of this series.
This is a slow burn romance between Flacon and Keene.
Flacon is an enforcers who moves into a house with a roommate (Keene). Flacon is a very sweet man. Who will do anything for the right cause. I really liked him as a character and watching him go through his disability and not letting it get him down. While Keene is that guy everyone loves. He's out spoken and doesn't care. But at the same time the boys cares a lot.
I'm so glad I was given a copy of this book from VoraciousReadersOnly for an honest review.
Can a reformed Enforcer find fulfilment and love? The excesses of a police state are still very present even nowadays wherever freedoms are trampled. It is well illustrated in the book. In this steampunk world, fear of the Enforcers is everywhere even though the justice and Enforcers organization attempt to revamp their image through Falcon, who is at least compassionate and trying to overcome his conditioning as an almost robotic Enforcer. He tries to implement a system where a suspect is not automatically guilty and where reasoning and research are prominent. What a heartwarming mystery and so well written bringing the characters to life in my mind was so easily done by the the author opening my heart to the characters was done without thought the array of characters some so vibrant and colorful others seemingly colorful and quirky ,all coming together to enticing you into its intriguing mystery with a plot that won't let you go from start to finish keeping you turning page after page wanting to see what's going to happen next until you reach its unexpected and climatic conclusion. Acquire " Falcon's Favor " for hours of intriguing and enjoyable entertainment. Kat
I read an early version of this, so not necessarily the final copy (which I will buy soon! And signed!). I’ll do a better review once I read the final polished copy, but I wanted to say that this has one of sweetest (and a bit hot!) relationships ever. I adored the love story. The mystery was fun, but I was completely absorbed by the unfolding romance. 💜
I enjoyed this well-written steampunk mystery! The characters were charming and complex and the plot could be followed even without reading the previous book. The world won me over and I went ahead and bought the other story too! I'm looking forward to the next ones!

I loved everything about this book! The mystery is definitely more of the main thing and the romance is still there just not all the book is about, and It's amazing. The found family makes my so happy, I definitely recommend this book!
* I received an ARC of Falcon’s Favor in return for an honest review*
4.5/5 Such a cute cozy mystery with queer main characters! Falcon and Keene’s paths cross after Falcon’s grandfather disowns him. For what? Standing up for what’s right. Grandfather seems to be quite the downer, but he’s only mentioned enough for us to hate him. Not enough to get into too much conflict. Upon Falcon’s unfortunate betrayal, he’s given the opportunity to move in with Keene, a fabulously skilled caterer and tea-maker, where immediately, Falcon’s attraction grows. But shortly after moving in, the two are robbed of most of their belongings while out for the evening. Falcon, being the highly decorated officer he is, sets to investigate, while trying to keep Keene safe from the dangers lurking in the world he’s diving into in an attempt to find the culprits. This story is beautifully written and full of Victorian vibes. Highly recommend it if you’re looking for a beautiful story of diversity, inclusion, and talk of tea and cakes. Oh, and not to mention the so adorably lazy pug who’s mistaken for a loaf of bread on a handful of occasions. 🥰
A cute LGBT romance with a mystery/police investigation as a backdrop. Falcon's Favor is set in a fantasy land that has lots of North America in the early 1900's vibes. In fact I was constantly forgetting the world is not real because it was so realistically portrayed. It has a good pace and great development of both narrative and characters. I've enjoyed the mystery/police investigation and I've found myself quite invested in it too. Interesting social justice elements have been blended in this part of the story and it worked very well because it enriched the idea of a developing land, striving to do better by its citizens, but also because it didn't really feel "in your face" as with many other novels. As for the romance part of the narrative, while cute and enjoyable, I didn't feel like it offered much. It was predictable and fast, something I am not very keen on.
But all in all a great page turner that I would recommend if you're after a bit of romance that has some substance to it!
* Many thanks to BookSirens for the opportunity to read this!
I read this after the 2nd book in the series because the summary on Booksirens mentioned it was a standalone story, and it was, but it referenced events that took place in the third book, giving just enough information to give you a general understanding. I think if I had not read any of the books before reading this book, I would have been fine. But having read the first two books, I already knew who the other characters were and I ended up trying to figure out, based on what was said, what happened in the third book. I guess I will find out shortly, lol!
Getting back to this story--I loved it. I really liked Falcon from the times he showed up in the first two books. Although he wasn't as major a side character as Dmitri, for example, I really liked who he seemed to be, and this story was wonderful to read. Loosely speaking, it's about his love story, but it's also about finding his place in this world and using his influence to truly make things better with the Enforcers. He's never agreed with how they run things and joined because he wanted to help make things better. If you've read any of the other books, you'll discover that while he has his own personal standards, he never really had any power to do anything. This is sort of his coming-of-age story. I loved Keene and I loved the two of them together. Even though there was instant attraction from both of them early on, I thought their romance was much more of a slow burn and I loved how it all ended up developing naturally. Highly recommended, especially if you've been enjoying this series. And yes, this can be read out of order, but I would recommend that you finish the trilogy first, if only because of the timeline.
This series has become one of those hidden gems for me and I hope the author continues writing stories in this universe.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from BookSirens. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
July 5 review of the audiobook (3.5 stars): I received a copy of this audiobook from the author, and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I loved this story and was so excited to get a copy of the audiobook as I wanted to hear what Falcon and Keene sounded like. And while I enjoyed the story and was so happy to hear Falcon's story all over again, the narration was a little flat. I haven't heard Brandon Au before, so I looked him up and he and his two brothers are professional jazz musicians from New Orleans (I think). I listened to some clips and they are really talented musicians.
Unfortunately, while Brandon Au did a decent job of the audio and there were moments that were wonderful, his overall performance felt flat to me. In particular, his third-person narrator voice described what was happening but without much in the way of emotion. The voices of the different characters were also not that distinguishable from one another. However, in truth, there was a lot of telling what was going on, rather than conversations between the characters. When I read the book myself, I didn't notice this, but listening to the book, I realized that there was more narrating and doing than talking. In the rare moments when Keene and Falcon talked to each, I enjoyed Keene's voice and wished there was more of it. Some of the best moments of the audiobook were moments between the two of them. Since this is a cozy mystery/queer romance (and it nails all this), I'm fine with this. I still love the story, but the audiobook left me a bit wanting. I still give the story 5 stars, but the narration 3.5. I think on Spotify I rounded up to 4 because I still very much enjoyed revisiting their love story.
Thank you to the publisher for allowing me access to this book via BookSirens. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I requested Falcon's Favor because I was in the mood for a cozy fantasy romance. It did fulfill the coziness, but not the fantasy.
While the main characters were likeable and the side characters were fun, there were no standouts in characterization. Technically, the writing was clean and clear with few errors and the story was easy to digest. The slow pace of the first two thirds of the book tested my patience, but afterwards the story picked up speed in a satisfying manner.
One of my negatives probably won't be an issue for most readers. The story contained a few phrases that seemed anachronistic, for lack of a better word. (Note: parachronistic may be a more appropriate term.) The most distracting examples were "fake it 'til I make it" and telling "my truth". These phrases are so modern (20th/21st century) sounding to me that it ruined my immersion in the story and sent me looking for the origin of the former phrase. I'm not a linguist and my "research" was brief, but the point is that instead of focusing on the story, I kept wondering if this was author oversight or if there was a reason, to be discovered in the worldbuilding that the apparent parachronisms kept showing up.
There was never an explanation and the fantastical elements were minimal at best. In fact, there was little to differentiate this story from a standard historical romance. However, it seems, based on the synopses of the other books, that fantasy play more of a role in the other stories.
So, the characters were earnest, the romance was serviceable and it was a fine read, but other stories in the series sound more interesting if the reader is interested in a fantasy-based plot.
This was sweet. I met the author at a steampunk convention and she sold her book well. I will say this has one of the most corrupt and ugly police state I've seen in a while. Falcon was a member of The Enforcers, a generational profession for him and his family. However, tired of the Enforcers being oppressive, deciding someone is guilty with little to no evidence and putting them in the Halls of Justice for life for pretty much any offense (The society that wanted to kill Wesley Crusher for stepping on the grass since death was the penalty for everything sprang to mind with this), Falcon exposes the corruption and starts reforms.
He's cut off from his rich family and was injured recently leaving him with a cane and physical therapy he has to do on top of moving in to somewhere inexpensive. His friends help him find a place with Keene, a young caterer who is also starting to grow his business and needed a roommate to help make ends meet. Within a few days of getting to know each other, they are robbed and Falcon -with Keene's help and encouragement - wants to find their stuff and maybe not put someone in jail for life in the process.
Falcon and Keene (especially) are sweet and as one might imagine, reforming from such an oppressive state isn't easy. The setting has a gas lamp feel to it, rather Victorian with those same constrictions on the female characters.
The mystery unfolds well and the romance is definitely slow burn. I liked the guys a lot and the resolution was fun and action packed. The only thing that didn't quite work for me was Keene's reaction to something Falcon did which was understandable but Keene went a bit over the top, not even listening to the explanation (in full disclosure that is a huge pet peeve of mine).
