Usually, the books I get from my Romance Reveal Book Box are enjoyable but not memorable. Every now and then, I find a book that I adore and I continue on with the series, if it is a series. This is the second book to one of those instances. I very much enjoyed this book. I would go as far as saying I loved it. The dark drama of this series, the atmosphere, the angst that comes in nearly every sentence - delicious. It hits every note that I crave.

Now, as much as I want to give this book 5 stars because of the plot and characters, I'm knocking it down to 4 stars because of grammar and sentence errors. They were noticeable. Luckily, I've existed on the Internet my whole life, more than half of that reading things written on sites like Wattpad and AO3. I can get past these mistakes because I'm used to ignoring those types of things for a good story. So it isn't a big deal to me. But, if it is a big deal to you… well, now you know, I suppose.

The first book ended with a cliffhanger and so does this one. While the book doesn't have a lot of different settings or a significant amount of time, I never felt bored. This book's content felt largely necessary for the progression of plot. I already have the next book on a list of to-be-bought books. I'm for sure buying it and reading it.

As Gabriel pursuits his vengeance, he has to make choices.
Revenge or Elise?
We all know what he will choose.

description

But the guilt Elise feels, can't let he leave the game.
So it's time for the initiation for the consortium, the three of them, Jacob is in the game too.

description

The things don't work as Bettencourt wanted, so now Gabriel's life is in danger…
It's time to the Hill brothers became as one and fight the treat together.
This was a bit boring, a lot of stalling, and a bit predictable.

We are back in the world of Gabriel and Elise and after the cliff hanger I couldn't wait. We now see Elise is heartbroken but is everything really what it seems. Gabriel continues to keep a watchful eye but still needs to keep his distance. Protect, watch, plan ahead but try not to get attached! He just can't keep himself from her! This couple has chemistry, angst, can be intense and a bit unpredictable! I cannot wait to see where we go from here on this crazy journey with Elise and Gabriel.

Upper Hand by Amelia Wilde is the continuation of Gabriel Hill and Elise Bettencourt's story as they battle feelings for each other while overcoming the secrets and dangers of the consortium that Mason Hill first attempted to unravel in Net Worth. There is no denying that Gabriel is a broken man; he will need a strong and empathetic heroine to be his anchor and "home." Elise is that woman but her heart keeps getting broken by him. Despite my frustrations with these two, I thought Gabriel and Elise were perfect for each other because she understood him and his reasons for revenge and never faulted him for using her. It was clear that Gabriel never wanted to hurt Elise but his path was already set and determined for him. In addition to thinking of himself as worthless and undeserving love, Gabriel has always used his charismatic facade as both a weapon and shield against others—Elise was the only exception.

"I want him on a level beyond guilt and debt and revenge. I want him because nothing else feels as good as being in his arms."

I do have to mention that there was a scene I particularly disliked because it made me extremely uncomfortable and took me out of the romance between Gabriel and Elise. Unfortunately, it had to do with the consortium and their initiation. As Gabriel becomes more entrenched in their clutches, Elise makes a decision that may have dire consequences for the both of them. Elise was an interesting heroine to root for because she grew up learning about her family's cruelty, especially her father's evil manipulations, and tried to leave it all behind only to get pulled back into the fold by the man she loved. It was frustrating to see her struggle and hurt by her family because she was just as deserving of love as Gabriel.

"I'd rather die than live without her, but I'll pay any price to keep her alive."

In the end, I enjoyed this book and will be looking forward to the conclusion of Gabriel and Elise's story in Fair Game because no surprise—their story ends in a shocking cliffhanger that left me reeling from the parallelism. I refuse to believe Gabriel and Elise were that naive into thinking that Bettencourt would not retaliate against them. I liked that the author particularly focused more on the romance in this installment because Gabriel and Elise's feelings for each other were finally recognized. Their love scenes, while few, were sensual and erotic. I highly recommend this to those who like reading angst and the enemies to lovers trope with a broken and self-destructing hero who loves and will do everything in his power to protect his hopelessly sweet and caring heroine.

Upper Hand continues the angsty push-pull dynamic between Gabriel and Elise, building on the aftermath of Power Play’s cliffhanger. Elise is a bit heartbroken, and Gabriel both continues to be drawn to her and pushes her away. But the dynamic is so strong, Gabriel’s need to protect Elise too intense, that these two won’t be pushed apart for long.

I’m really loving the chemistry between these two, and the nuances that Amelia is bringing to both of their characters. Each has their own set of baggage, and I love how their souls call to each other in ways that are both healing and unsettling. Amelia gives us an intoxicating blend of action and quiet moments- advancing the plot while deepening the character chemistry. We have some really emotionally rich moments, some super sexy ones, some heart touching drama, and all of that angsty tension. Amelia does broken characters like no other, and I’m loving watching these two work through their brokenness and finding some healing with one another.

On a side note, there’s a sex scene in this story that while tintilatting and entertaining just felt a bit out of the blue. This happened in Gabriel’s brother’s book as well. Both scenes play out as catalytic moments for the heroes- where they learn more about their love for the heroine while also working through any residual trauma. But to me they’ve felt at the expense of the heroine, even if it’s written in a way that they find enjoyment. In this book, this scene felt less coherent to the character arcs, more for the eroticism than anything. The trope itself doesn’t bother me normally, but I know others might not enjoy. I also wish Dangerous Press stories would be more transparent about stories that have cliffhangers, that are part of series, etc. You can never tell if a book is a standalone, mid-series, or a conclusion-and while trilogies are their usual, that hasn’t always been the case. Needless to say, this book confirms this book is a trilogy, so anticipate another cliffy. Excited for the finale!

I love this story, and I love where it is going. I just think that at times it is taking too long to get there. I love what is going on between Elise and Gabriel. And I think that they will be a fantastic power couple. I think that Gabriel is trying to take on too much responsibility in this whole consortium mess..... but I love that Elise is trying to help him despite leaving that life behind. There were a couple parts of the book that really felt like they dragged on for too long, but over all I really enjoyed the book. And thanks to that major cliffhanger... I am quite ready for the next one right now!!!

Whoa! Upper Hand has me speechless. I'm a big fan of Amelia Wilde, so I know I'm in for a continued good story after reading Power Play but seriously I am so blown away.

I absolutely refuse to give any details to this how this story unfolds, you really need to go in blind. I will say be prepared for the twisted turns (Elise's father is pure evil) and to feel all the feels for Gabriel, my heart continues to break for him but he has such a beautiful soul!! And definitely hold onto your seats, and your kindle because I was about ready to throw mine!! What an EPIC cliffhanger!!!!

This is not a standalone Power Play must be read first or you will be super confused.
This picks up right were Power Play left off.
I had a harder time this time around with the story. I am not one for forced sex scenes and this story includes one. I was not expecting it and found it could be very triggering. It took me out of the story and the romance.
The writing itself is good as always.

I received an eARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and options are my own.

Yet another great read from Amelia Wilde! Wow. The plot just thickens the deeper and see we get into this series! This series is based on power, betrayal, and vengeance. As we get deeper into the story we unfold so much more familial drama and ruthlessness to take each other down. Amelia had no issue showing and telling you how messed up some of these characters are. Especially with our Gabriel. He’s gone through so much trauma and it only looks like it's going to get a little worse before it gets better. However, the growth we’ve seen from him so far is phenomenal. I really don’t want to say too much more but overall I really enjoyed this book and I cannot wait for the next book!

Upper Hand is book two in Amelia Wilde’s Power series. Yes, it ends in a breathtaking cliffhanger, but Wilde makes it worth the wait!

Gabriel Hill has finally got what he’s been working for all these years - entry into the sinister Consortium, the group of businessmen who are responsible for the murder of his parents. He’s been prepared to give everything to avenge his parents, including his own life. The only problem? Elise Bettencourt. Gabriel loves Elise. He’s starting to overcome the trauma he’s lived with for years. He loves Elise, and his revenge doesn’t seem to be as important as living. The choice he has to make, however, may no longer be his. Evil forces are out to destroy both him and Elise. And it may be too late.

Y’all - this book is emotional, it’s angsty, it’s beautiful and bittersweet. Gabriel is so beautifully broken. He wants people to believe he’s no good, but his heart is good. Elise’s heart is so open and accepting of everything Gabriel is, and her love is a balm for his soul. I love the strongly-written characters, the great world building, and the story. I can not wait for the conclusion.

Upper Hand is a stunner! You definitely need to read Power Play first, but to make it even better, read the Wealth trilogy which features Gabriel’s brother Mason. You’ll get all the background information on what happened to their parents and what happened to Gabriel, his brothers and sister who were left orphans. You will not regret reading these books!!! Please let me know what you think - I’d love to discuss!

I’m utterly obsessed with Gabriel and Elise’s story. You have to read this trilogy!

Upper Hand picks up directly where Power Play (first book in the trilogy) left off. Gabriel continues his quest for revenge, and I am equally mad at him and in love with him for it. He is so self destructive that he can’t see all that he could have with Elise including an unlimited supply of delicious buttercream roses. In addition to dealing with Gabriel’s rejection, Elise is also trying to be there for her sisters. They have the worst father ever. I am consumed with hate for this character. I really hope karma gets him in the next book.

This book hits all my sweet spots. It’s the perfect blend of spice, angst, and plot. I love a book that can get me hot and make me cry. Gabriel’s backstory is tragic and it is hard watching him relive these painful memories, especially seeing how gentle he is with a teenage side character named Nate, who is going through something similar. This story is very steamy overall. Gabriel and Elise can’t keep their hands off of each other and there is a group scene as well.

The cliffhanger at the end of this book literally destroyed me. I honestly don’t know where the author will go from here, and I am utterly heartbroken for Gabriel and Elise. I can’t believe I have to wait until freaking February for the shattered pieces of my heart to be put back together. I know the author is busy and writing a million things, but I really need the rest of this story right nooooooooooooooooooooow!

Omg! I just finished Upper Hand and my heart is racing! I was so tense and stressed for most of this book just waiting for bad shit to happen!
Elise and Gabriel are like waves and the shore. They keep pulling back, and crashing together over and over. They’re both in love, but won’t allow it to happen for risk of their families and Gabriel’s revenge plan.
We see how much more of an asshole Elise’s father is and the lengths he’ll go to to have ultimate control.
I was yelling at my iPad about the poor decisions they were thinking of making, but equally happy to see them admit their feelings to themselves and each other.
This ends in one hell of a cliffy, but it’s worth the ride. Can’t wait for book 3!

I’m speechless! What the heck just happened! In the second book about Gabriel Hill and Elise Bettencourt you find them both heartbroken. He’s forced them apart saying he was justing Elise for his revenge of the Consortium, but at some point things changed. Driven by his overwhelming need to get even for his parents deaths and what he and his siblings had to endure after, Gabriel has done everything and anything to earn the secrets of some very powerful people. Unfortunately Elise was raised as a participant from a young age and was complacent in his parents deaths. Will that and all the demons be too much for them. Will a secret society force them together and what will happen if the best those powerful people? Stay tuned for the conclusion of this twisted, dark tale between two very broken people who’ve found love and hope in each other. Can it be theres?

4.25stars-- UPPER HAND is the second instalment in Amelia Wilde’s contemporary, adult, dark, erotic , romance series focusing on businessman Gabriel Hill, and twenty year old bakery owner Elise Bettencourt. UPPER HAND and POWER PLAY are a spin off from , and set in the author’s WEALTH Trilogy. UPPER HAND should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the cliff hanger and events of book one POWER PLAY. For backstory and history, I recommend reading the WEALTH trilogy. Gabriel Hill is the older brother of Mason Hill (Wealth).

WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

SOME BACKGROUND: Approximately fourteen years earlier Gabriel, along with his siblings Mason, Jameson and Remy lost everything the night their parents were murdered in a house fire, and Gabriel is determined to seek revenge against the people he believes responsible for their deaths. A group of elite and questionable businessman, known as the Consortium, a group in which his father was a member, is Gabriel’s target but Gabriel needs an ‘in’ and using Elise Bettencourt, the daughter of the man in charge, is his first step in destroying them all.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Gabriel and Elise) UPPER HAND picks up immediately after the events of book one POWER PLAY in which Gabriel has successfully seduced and broken our story line heroine but Gabriel’s determination to become a member of the Consortium is but the first step on his path towards revenge. Gabriel Hill is determined to destroy the members of the Consortium starting with Elise’s father but our couple had no idea as to the extent and depravity the Consortium was willing to gain the upper hand. Wanting to protect his family and the woman he loved, Gabriel pushed everyone out of his life, a life that would need everyone in return. What ensues is the rebuilding relationship between Gabriel and Elise, and the fall-out as the Consortium makes good on a promise to take control.

The relationship between Gabriel and Elise is a second chance, of a sorts; a rebuilding relationship in which our couple become fodder for Elise’s father, and the members of the Consortium but Gabriel and Elise are not the only new pledges demanding entry, someone from Gabriel’s past has been caught up in the mayhem, and the fall-out of power. A forced $ex scene may be a trigger-you have been warned.

We are re-introduced to Elise’s sisters Catherine and Lydia, and their parents; Gabriel’s siblings Mason and his wife Charlotte (WEALTH), Jameson, and Remy; Jacob Chambers, as well as several members of The Consortium, and a young street boy named Nate.

UPPER HAND is a story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, dysfunctional family relationships, heart break, passion, desperation and love. The premise is dark and raw; the romance struggles in the face of rejection and outside interference; the characters are broken and desperate. UPPER HAND ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

“You know what? It doesn’t matter, because I care about you. If you want to go down this way, then I’ll go down with you.”
🖤
Review: Upper Hand by Amelia Wilde. Book 2 in a trilogy.
🖤
In this second book in the trilogy, things continue to spiral out of control for Gabriel and Elise. Gabriel was invited by Elise’s dad to commit to the consortium who killed his parents, and he now can finally seek his revenge. There’s always a price to pay, and Bettencourt demands that Gabriel let go of Elise, which he did.

From there on, things turns so chaotic, heartbreaking, full of despair and so hot. Of course they can’t stay apart for too long and there’s little they can do since their hearts and soul are on the line. I love them together and how their feelings developed. But then, there’s a situation in the middle of the book that it’s the turn point of everything.

I really thought I hated some characters in another series, but no one compares to Elise’s dad, Bettencourt. I don’t think even devil would want that horrible person, just to think about what he did it made me nauseated. I seriously had to stop reading to regroup my feelings. I won’t accept nothing less than torture or anything worse, to him in his demise.

I know that this whole event is what made the couple see their true love, but none of them truly deserved what happened and I feel so much for Elise, my heart broke beyond repair. And then I knew that this book would end in a cliffhanger… and swear to all that’s holy, Amelia is trying to end me. I can’t… I can’t and can’t. She turned up the heat, the angst and the horrible things an evil character can do to another, to a whole new level.

Ps1: Honorable mention to Remy and Jameson Hill, these siblings are totally me favorite, him even more.
Ps2: I hope Caroline Constantine, Bryant Morelli and Bettencourt are sent to Azkaban in the same cell.

I really wanted to like book 2 of Gabriel's and Elise's story but really struggled with getting through this book. It felt as though it didn't really go anywhere until later in the book. The back and forth between Elise and Gabriel's relationship does seem as though it gains ground in book 2, with her supporting Gabriel's need for revenge with regard to the Consortium. The amount of attention spent on The Consortium started to get tedious, especially knowing Bettencourt was going to go ape shit with Gabriel's initiation but still was successfully playing Elise's like a well tuned piano with his master manipulations. I grew a bit tired of Elise's character seeming like "Florence Nightingale" feeling responsible for saving everyone in her family as well as Gabriel. At times this couple seemed fated to be unable to save themselves, let alone anyone else.

I really enjoy Ms. Wilde's books but book 2 of this trilogy seemed "too dramatic/soapy" at times. Hopefully book three will pull the entire series together and make sense of a revenge plot that seems more like a statement of redemption than an actual plan to rid the world of the cold hearted monster that calls himself Elise's father as well as the men and women of the Consortium who do his bidding.

Review:

“She’s everything I’ve ever wanted. A soft place to land. A safe place to stay. A warm heart. She’s home.”

When I finished Power Play I was very upset with Gabriel, for the way he treated Elise in the end. I wanted to stay mad with him here, but it was impossible.

This book is as angsty as book one or even more. We get to know more about Gabriel’s feelings and traumas. I felt like Elise was the cornerstone that hold him together. She reached a part of him that nobody else ever did.

That consortium is something else, that father of hers is diabolical. I hope Amelia gives him the end he deserves as much as I want the main couple to have a well deserved HEA. However, the way this second book ended, the angsty is only beginning.

This book picks up and continues Gabriel and Elise's story, so be sure to read book 1, Power Play first. There is such an exquisite poignancy to this piece of the story. Right from the first chapter my heart ached, and that pain just never eased. These two simply have me feeling, EVERYTHING. Elise is easy to like but Gabriel will wreck you. Broken, vengeful, filled with self-loathing and an underlying layer of gentle sweetness, he steals your heart and brings out every ounce of your protective instincts. I so want to hug him and vanquish his demons and enemies just as badly as I want to shake him and tell him to forgive himself, realize what he wants to throw away and simply let himself be happy. Deeply emotional, filled with drama and offering twists that will have your jaw on the floor, this trilogy is too luscious to miss out on. There is a cliffy, and Wow, do I want book 3 yesterday! This is my impartial, independent review.

Gabriel might be the most tortured male character I've read in a long time. He is so hurt and has such complex feelings about what happened in his past, from his parents to his own sexual assault (trigger warning there) to how he's treated people. He has so much anger, resentment, and desire for revenge that he can't see what's in front of his face. He can't allow himself to love or enjoy anything.

Elise is a sweetheart who is heartbroken but standing tall. She is used to people letting her down and she's determined to not let Gabriel be any different. She is drawn back to her evil father's clutches by one of the things she cares about most...her two sisters.

Gabriel and Elise are so good together but will they get their HEA? We will find out in book 3.

This is book two in The Power Play Series and it continues Gabriel and Elise's story and omg it is definitely a must read. Gabriel is determined to extract his revenge and take down Elise's father and the consortium even if it is the last thing that he does and that is why he needs to keep as far away from Elise as he can do that she doesn't get caught in the cross fire but when the initiation into the consortium takes place it is even worse than he thought and all of his past comes crashing back making him even more determined to take it all down. Elise is upset that Gabriel has pushed her away and she is also concerned about him as she knows just how her father works and then she has first hand knowledge of just how evil, deranged and sick her father is and now she is determined to help Gabriel in any way that she can go bring down the consortium so that Gabriel can get his revenge. I really hope that they can pull this off and Elise's father and the consortium to down in flames and end up in a fiery pit of help because they are definitely not human beings. Wow I read this book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down as it was so addictive and had you on the edge of your seat and just when you think things can't get any worse you have a explosive and first cliff hanger ending and I can't wait to read the next book in this amazing series. Amelia Wilde is an incredible author and writer and she certainly knows how to keep her reader's attention and the depth of her story's are what makes you go back time and time again to read her book's and I definitely recommend that you read her book's and you will not be disappointed.

Utterly consuming, Gabriel and Elise's story was gripping. Gabriel think he is broken, and he has been driven by revenge for years. He thought using Elise would be the key, but what if the game changes and his feeling for Elise change? I loved this vengeful romance that had me turning those pages, I think I love both Gabriel and Elise equally (both are beautifully broken), I have to know what happens next, do I have to wait long to find out? I just hope the words are flowing and I can pick up the next one soon.

I thought I had an idea of where part two of this story would go. In some ways, I was correct but in other ways, I was way off base. I love it when an author can keep things fresh and exciting.

I knew based on Mason and Charlotte's trilogy just how bad this Consortium was. I understood Gabriel's need to take it down, not just for obvious reasons. Getting to see what the Consortium truly cost Gabriel and also Elise made my heart sad that any body of individuals could be so vile and repugnant. However, and this is the part that I was way off base on, had no idea that they would be this VILE. Elise's father is worse than Bryant Morelli, from the Midnight Dynasty world, and that says something because there is not much I like about that man.

There was a lot of growth in both characters in this story. Elise was stronger. There is something soothing about her and I think that quiets Gabriel's demons. This story dove deeper into the backstory, without going into graphic details, of Gabriel's past, and let me just say that if I wasn't fully on board before, I sure am now. That poor man. I never really saw the weight that Gabriel had on his shoulders. It was just inferred that it was Mason because he was the eldest of the family.

I look forward to seeing where and how this concludes. That ending was not nice in the least.

This book is the sequel to Power Play. It’s the continuation of Elise and Gabriel’s story. They are still discovering what they are feeling for each other. So much is happening in this book but it’s worth reading every word!

Gabriel’s character development is so sad but soooo beautiful. We learn more about his past and why he is the way he is. We discover a different side of him and my heart was a total mess during the second half of the book because that’s where we discover more and that’s where most of the development happens. I just love him so much more in this book.🥺

Elise is so sweet and so perfect with Gabriel. She’s the perfect girl for him and no one can change my mind. She is so kind and I love how she can stand up for herself. I loved her in the first book and I still love her in this one. She cares so deeply for the people she loves.

This book is very well written. I do recommend checking the trigger warnings before jumping into either book. But if you do pick it up, don’t judge Gabriel too much at first 😅

I can’t wait for Fair Game! This was a pretty heavy cliffhanger but I’ll enjoy the 3rd book even more!!!!

The second installment in an unnecessary trilogy.

Elise and Gabriel are trying to figure out how to come together after Gabriel has joined Elise's father's eveil consortium.

this story felt flat and emotionless.

Didn’t love it but didn’t hate it. Felt all over the place but interesting.

Great continuation from the first. I have to say "what a prick" about Elises dad. Any revenge he has coming his way I hope it's good. Time to find out how it all comes together.
