The Companion Project

Rate this book
WANTED: One very fake date to a very real event.

Henry Dawson is many things—successful, charismatic, good-looking… and, most recently, a liar. A stupid fib to his parents about bringing a date to their anniversary party is causing him to scramble, attempting to fix his mistake.

Emma Burns lives a double life. By day, she’s a Civil Rights attorney. By night, she’s the mastermind behind RB’s Companions. When hired, she platonically accompanies men to social events, whether it’s as a girlfriend, friend or business associate. She does her job well.

After receiving an inquiry from a desperate new client, she agrees to be his girlfriend. What she doesn’t account for is the mystery man to be Henry, the notorious playboy, fellow lawyer and coworker she’s known for years. Communicating under aliases to protect their identities, the pair find themselves captivated by one another, and are shocked when they finally meet face-to-face.

The two might be experts in the courtroom, but they’re hardly professionals when it comes to matters of the heart. Pretending to date is easy. When the lines between real and fake blur, getting what they want becomes way more complicated.

The Companion Project is a steamy romantic comedy featuring coworkers-to-lovers, forced proximity and fake dating. Told through dialogue, emails and text message conversations, you can expect plenty of banter, very spicy scenes, an unstoppable woman and a man willing to change for the person he adores. It is a standalone novel.

Well, I wrote another book.

If you read my debut novel, An Unexpected Paradise, you'll find this one is definitely different. It doesn't focus on an obvious attraction between two people; it's more exploratory and learning about the other.

From a writing standpoint, I'd like to think that I've improved from book one to book two, and I'm proud of this book. Hopefully that's the case, but my goal as an author is to continuously find ways to get better. I'm still learning. This is not my full time job, but I love sharing stories with y'all.

Anyway. I hope you love Henry, Emma and their fun, sweet, and spicy tale. I've said this before and I'll say it again: it's okay if you don't like it. Your opinions are valid. But thank you for giving me another chance. <3

Self note:

- Playboy x Celibate h (6 years)
- Fake dating
- Colleagues
- Workplace romance

Loved this author's writing style and how she writes her MMCs. I just don't have it in me to read another book about a reformed player. For the life of me, I always find their redemption arcs unbelievable. 🤷

Anyway, this one is definitely not for me. So, off to her next book. 😄

This is where I DNF at 50%.

This book is too long for a romance and tbh it feels like there’s no longer a conflict and no reason why the two can’t just date for real right now. 🥲

I did really like the banter and the overall writing is lovely. I loved the text messaging - those chapters were by far my favorite part! It feels like this book just needed more beta readers or a better editor. It needed to be shorter and pared down to be a really good romance with a succinct plot.

What I really disliked were the monologues and preachy vibes where it felt like the characters were telling me their priorities and beliefs instead of showing me. Like when the MMC tells off that misogynistic guy. He says two long paragraphs to the man, storms out and then monologues to the FMC too. Um what? We already saw you do the action; we know ho you feel about it. You don’t need to spell it out again.

People in real life don’t go around spouting their beliefs in people’s faces like that. It felt like the author was trying to “play nice” and not upset the reader instead of giving us the story as it would happen IRL.

I think the author has talent; her writing is overall very good. I just think this particular books needed a strong editor’s eye.

You guys. THIS BOOK! It has taken me a while to write this review. Mostly because I loved it SO much I’m having a hard time putting into words just how much. Chelsea, you magical storyteller, you. I didn’t think she’d be able to top Jack and Jo’s story but Henry and Emma take the zebra cake (IYKYK). This book had everything I could want in a romance. Friends to lovers, fake dating, office romance, one bed and SPICE. Holy hell this book is spicy in the best way. This book made me feel ALL the emotions. I fell in love with Henry right alongside Emma. He was so sweet and caring. And Emma was so relatable. Their relationship is so cute. From the back and forth witty banter, to the intimate moments shared together. I cannot express enough how much I loved every second of this story.

"I wish I could immortalize this moment forever. Her hand in mine. The smoothness of her palm. The soft music filtering through the walls. A star-filled sky. The tip of her lips in a small tugging across her beautiful face. A calm, content joy slowly filling the surrounding space, reaching every nook and crevice. Waves of serenity and finally lapping at my ankles, beckoning me to tread deeper into the waters of complete bliss. Perfect doesn’t do it justice. Perfect doesn’t come close."

Emma and Henry have known each other for a long time. From the first day of high school to their years working together at a law firm, you'd think that they'd be acquaintances at best...but no. Emma and Henry exchange casual glances and keep their interactions to a minimum.

Henry is in dire need of a date to his parents' wedding anniversary extravaganza. He refuses to be set up with his mom's friend's daughter and lies to her about having a girlfriend. He relishes his time as a bachelor so he definitely DOES NOT have a date. His solution? RB's Companions.

Emma works her ass off at her law firm, but those school loans have kept her in a state of living check by check. Her solution? RB's Companions. Being a date for the dateless on her own safe, consenting terms has pooled in money for those pesky loans over the years and she only has $3800 left. Luckily, a man by the name of JD has contacted her for a 4-day family event and isn't bothered by the hefty price tag.

"JD" and "RB" begin their email exchanges, but little do they know the person on the other side of the line has been right in front of them all along...
________________________________________________

THESE TWO. Are you KIDDING ME? Henry and Emma's lives meshing together after years of constantly being in each other's orbit was so fantastic to read. I felt instantly drawn in by their connection and tension. I was on the edge of my seat, WAITING for the moment they would inevitably find out about one another's identities.

There's something so special about a book that involves anonymous contact between two characters. Henry and Emma anonymously emailing and messaging each other was my favorite element to the story! Readers get to learn so many extra little bits about each character, making them well-rounded with details as small as what their favorite type of dessert is or what their official Spider-man rankings are. It's the little moments of connection between two characters that I love most and this book was FULL of those little moments between all the wonderful, sappy, beautiful bits. They went from practically being strangers to WAY more all because of these exchanges under their aliases. :')

I am so beyond proud of Chelsea and I'm screaming from the rooftops over how much love I have for this second book!! READ. THIS. BOOK. I had the absolute best time! If you love a workplace romance, sunflowers, BANTER UP THE WAZOO, bandaids that'll make you cry, and sweet characters with aching tension, you're in for a RIDE.

Thank you to Chelsea Curto for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

RATING: 500000 sunflowers and bandaids and zebra cakes out of 5 🤍

The audiobook threw me off because this is the first time I’ve had a black women narrate a white character and although the description described her as white with blonde hair it was really hard not to see her as a black woman because of the narration.

Henry was UTTER PERFECTION. At one point I only wanted his POV, I found myself sad when it switched away from him. He’s definitely a bookish crush

It’s always a little cringe when people get too close too fast without really knowing one another. Henry and Emma’s relationship starts off over email and text. And they both seem to fall in love and open up way too much without actually having seen or heard the other. It’s a bit weird.

Thankfully this is not a realistic story where it all falls apart when they do finally meet, but it’s the sweet fictional fairytale kind of story where everything works out smoothly. So even though that weirdly fast intimacy was odd, it didn’t lead to any stressful hiccups. It made for an easy and relaxing read. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

I listened to the audiobook for this one and the female voice bothered me a lot. It didn’t match the characters, she had some odd slip-ups and her recordings also sounded muffled compared to the male narrator’s. I found it distracting.

The story is shallow but enjoyable. The writing isn’t bad, but not great. 2.5 stars.

A fun, flirty and delightfully steamy anonymous texting/fake dating/workplace romance that sees two lawyers up for the same promotion becoming friends through an anonymous 'companion' service in order for one to attend a family event with a fake girlfriend only to find themselves falling hard in real life. I really liked this dual POV romance that is set in the same universe as the author's first book book. The male friendships at the core of the book make it special and provide for a lot of humor. Recommended for fans of authors like Lyssa Kay Adams and Sarah Estep. It was also great on audio too!!

Steam level: open door, some explicit scenes

ARC review.

I had the pleasure of beta reading TCP, so I’ve been invested in Henry & Emma’s story from very early days. Reading this ARC and seeing it’s final state was an absolute joy!

Henry and Emma have known each other for 17 years…. Their relationships has always been tense but cordial after Henry beat out Emma for valedictorian in high school. Fast forward years later: they’re both working at the same law firm and are up for the same promotion. On top of all of that, Henry needs a date to his parents’ 40th anniversary party. It’s an interesting situation for sure!

I loved the use of emails & texts in this book. I’m a huge fan of this in general as a plot device, but I adore the way Chelsea shows so much wit and humor through digital communications. Henry has the absolute BEST group of friends (shoutout Jack & Jo - I see you!) and the communication between Henry and Emma is WIDE open, y’all. Henry is a dirty talker and a CONSENT KING. 👑 If you love tension and mutual pining this book is for you.

I have lots of thoughts

1. The concept? Amazing. I am a sucker for anonymous texting. It added another lair to the fake dating I never knew I needed.

2. Emma was great, Henry was great.

3. THE THIRD ACT CONFLICT?? what even was that? In short, an ex-girlfriend of his grabs Henry's hand and puts it on her shoulder. He promptly moves away bc duh, he got a girl. Emma sees this and FLIPS and needs some time to think because she doesn't think she can handle his 'playboy past'. Mind you, I think it was a build-up of comments made by Henry's friends and this situation was just the straw that broke the camel's back but still.

The worst part????????????????? everyone telling Henry he messed up when he did NOTHING WRONG and making him feel horrible. ALL his friends mess around and for them to berate Henry for messing around BEFORE liking Emma is insane and crazy hypocritical.

anyways. yeah. #justiceforhenry

Good chemistry and imperfect individuals - love that. However, I did the audio and the female narrator was distractingly not great. Weird pauses, random pronunciations that were off, virtually no emotion during emotional scenes… it was tough. Would be a 4 start review had it not been for that.

Soft and sweet with spice

Unconventional meet cutes, falling before meeting face-to-face, and texting in romances are all like catnip to me, so this had me completely hooked in the first half. After reading and enjoying Curto's debut, An Unexpected Paradise, I had an idea of how this playboy-tamed romance would go. We knew that the hero is relationship-adverse but seems to have a soft spot for his co-worker, and I was intrigued by how things would progress. So I was very surprised when it ended up being softer, sweeter, and MUCH more texting-focused than anticipated. The first half has pages upon pages of our couple falling without meeting first (at least that they knew of, lol), and I loved watching this playboy hero bond with a woman for the first time. It has him completely out of his element, and it was almost syrupy sweet at times. In the back half, I still enjoyed the book quite a bit, but it didn't delve deep enough into certain aspects of their relationship - like the fact that the hero has been thinking of the heroine since high school, but he slept with a different woman every night until they started texting. I needed a better explanation in order to be cool with that scenario. So there were definitely a few weak spots in the story, but there's a whole lot that worked for me.

The story follows Henry, a man who has never dated. Sure, he sleeps with women regularly, but he's never attempted to take it any further than that. So when he finds himself telling his mom that he'll be bringing his girlfriend to a family event, Henry is not sure what to do. A friend suggests the services of a woman who attends events as a fake date as her side hustle, so Henry reaches out to the mystery woman. Since the event is a few months away and it'll require more knowledge of each other than usual, Henry's mystery woman suggests that they get to know each other better before meeting face-to-face. One email turns into ten, which turns into hundreds of texts, and it's not long before Henry is wishing for more with a woman he's never met. And when they do finally meet in person, well, Henry already had a crush on Emma. She's been immune to his charms since high school, and Henry isn't sure if all of their texting will change that.

Playboys always seem to fall the hardest, and that is definitely the case here. We don't get a great explanation about why Henry is so adamantly against relationships, but we do know that he goes from woman to woman before the book begins. We also know that something about Emma is different for him, and I would've liked more exploration into their in-person relationship before meeting. It's not a short book, and that part is lacking. For example, we know that Henry used to bring hookups to his office - where Emma also works - and think nothing of having a quickie during the lunch hour. That doesn't exactly go well with the "it's always been you" trope, if you know what I mean. That element is sort of glossed over (and takes place before they make contact via email), which makes some of it more palatable, but also left me curious about certain things. The rest of the book is so soft and cute, other than the spice - which is certainly steamy. I can already see growth in Curto's writing between this and her first book, which is great. I actually enjoyed the first book more because the tropes were a better fit for me, but I am definitely looking forward to seeing how her books continue to improve in the future. This was a solid 4-star read for me.

First off I have to say that I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to be an early reader. I can’t thank you enough! Make sure to read the dedication and the author notes!

Oooh our girl @chelseareadsandwrites has done it again! Not to discount AUP in way shape or form, but I loved TCP even more. I loved everything about this book! The slow-burn story, the characters, the delicious spice!

Emma was smart, strong, hardworking, and a truly beautiful person inside and out. I think so many readers will easily relate to her.

Henry was a total cinnamon roll hero and has most definitely been added to my list of book boyfriends! He’s so supportive, and bandaid in the pocket thoughtful. He’s this mix of filthy and sweet that had me totally swooning.

“She tastes sweet like champagne and dangerous like the best kind of trouble.”

So much to love in TCP;
🌻 Coworkers to lovers
🌻 Fake dating
🌻 Only one bed
🌻 Consent & open communication
🌻 Banter/tension
🌻 The nicknames
🌻 Squad goals guy group
🌻 Email/text exchanges
🌻 Grand gestures
🌻 “Good girl”
🌻 And again, the 🌶

The Companion Project is out in the world on Kindle (paperbacks available 10/13), and you absolutely must READ THIS BOOK!

Chelsea you blew me away with your sophomore novel. I love seeing how you’ve progressed as an author and I am so excited for what’s next!

I LOVED THIS BOOK. I LITERALLY ATE IT UP. I NEED TO GO READ CHELSEAS WHOLE BACKLOG RIGHT NOW. The fact I have it signed is even better. This book is like everything I’ve ever wanted in a book, in one. Go read it, you won’t regret it.

It starts off very cliché-style. They have known each other for years and suddenly, she feels empty without him, "As if a part of me is missing, and I’m no longer whole". Chill, woman, he was just talking to you. Likewise, he says "She was so close, I could smell her shampoo and soap. It was a delicious mixture of apples and sweet vanilla, the sweet scents tickling my nose and causing me to hastily flee in a panic, seeking refuge in my office the rest of the afternoon, afraid to get close to her again". A little bit over the top too early, too fast.

Soon afterwards, subtle as a bulldozer, the author slips gender-splaining (mind you, I agree, only that again, it's too early too fast to be believable): "Calling an article of clothing hot or not hot is fairly derogatory. Words matter, H. Keep that shit out of your professional life. And your personal life, too.”
Repulsion and shame inch down my spine as my neck heats. I take a sip of my drink to stop the mortification. “Fuck. I didn’t think of it like that. I always thought it was in good fun, you know? Something to laugh about. But… Jesus, I don’t want to bully anyone. That’s gotta change immediately.”

Seems like a children's book moral lesson, learned too quickly to be true.

There is a lot of exaggerated attraction, which I know is expected in romances. Only it feels too much even for a romance: "His voice is warm and rich as it seeps into your veins, taking on the role of an IV providing life". And this is just in the very first chapters.

I started to actually enjoy the novel when H and h began to exchange emails. They were awkwardly funny and sweet at times. When h confesses she is not always bubbly and feisty but has a darker side, he answers "I have a flashlight. We can navigate the darkness together", which was the first line I found romantic.

This is the kind of novel where you cannot read a straight dialogue. You get a line followed by many paragraphs (sometimes pages) of interior monologues before the next line comes. At which point, of course, you have forgotten what they were talking about and need to go back and re read. I'm not a fan of this writing style, but maybe not everyone finds it annoying.

Another annoying element? Henry's word-vomiting. He goes on and on several times and I kept wondering why no editor told the author to please shut him up.

However, it was refreshing to find protagonists that are open to each other about their feelings every step of the way. No longing in silence assuming their feelings are unrequited. It was a positive surprise.

The spicy scenes are scorching. He is a one-night-stand kind of man. She hasn't had sex in 6 years because "You know how much I work. I… I haven’t had time for anyone". Why, dear author? Why is it always a virgin or a celibate? What healthy young woman goes without sex for 6 years for no apparent reason? And you know what else? Despite that obscenely long dry spell, she is on birth control. Ridiculous doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Cheesiness in a romance novel is always a risk. There's a thread that marks what is romantic and what is cheesy, and it changes from reader to reader. To me, most of the actions and speeches in this novel were cheesy, though I understand some readers might love them.

I really wanted to like this book and the only reason I pushed through reading this was because I DNF'd the book I picked up before this.

Speeches are made instead of regular dialogue making it very hard to read and make me think thoughts like "no one talks like this and if they did I would've told them to shut up and let me enjoy the fireworks that I told you I was excited about but I didn't get to enjoy because you were talking the whole time." And yes, that happened in the book although the FMC didn't seem to notice.

Every trope under the sun was shoved into the book. The MMC behaving like he has 5 other split personalities--contrasting his thoughts with his actions. Major cringe in dialogue between the group of male friends.

I also hated that the FMC only had 1 friend and they only had what, 3 scenes together in the book?

Overall, I think it would have been great if the author stuck to a few tropes and causes she wanted to show in the book instead of including every single trope and just making it such a pain to read.

Which reminds me, just because the MMC has whole speeches and pages and pages of thoughts that shove it down your throat he's a feminist doesn't make it believable. I really love authors who portray scenes instead of having the MMC have a whole speech about him being a feminist. It's just braggy.

ok first thing, the blurb of the book gave me all the things i wanted: fake dating, enemies to lovers, office romance, secret identities, pining, forced proximity, slow burn, etc. But this book didn’t do it right and it ended up being extremely cheesy. The guy was supposed to come off as a feminist and protective hottie who everyone swoons for and the girl was supposed to come off as a sweetheart badass who fights back. The guy ended up being overly dramatic in his declarations and WAYYYY to respectful, like dude, stop asking to kiss her when she has CLEARLY already said yes like TWELVE TIMES. Emma was ok, she knew what she deserved and needed but changed her persona and views literally every other page and it kept confusing me. I loved the side characters and the reunion after the conflict was my favorite part even if it was INCREDIBLY CHEESY. Overall this book is fine, it’s very cliché and cheesy and i was laughing at the aggravation these characters were putting me through.

pros: had a nice reunion and i liked the side characters and the office romance was great
cons: SO CHEESY. SO CLICHE. kinda annoying most times

This book is based on the premise that a lawyer has time for a side gig to help pay off her student loans, which right off the bat, was hard for me to go with. Romance novels require a certain level of suspending disbelief and this one did not do it for me.

With many self-published books, I notice the first few chapters are well-edited and flow. Then things take a nose dive and the editing gets worse and worse. So for this book, the first three chapters are great and do a wonderful job of setting up the book. But gradually, the clunky sentences settle in, and pages and pages of dialogue that take forever to get to the point of the discussion persist. I read romance novels to escape reality and its hard to do that when a story gets bogged down with details that don't add to the story.

I stopped reading just before the first sex scene, which is rare for me. It took for-freaking-ever just to get them to have a continuous scene of relieving the sexual tension. So. Much. Talking. And not sexy talking.

Ultimately, this was a DNF and a book I wouldn't recommend.

My Grade: D+

The main issue I had with this book is that, for me, I found Henry to be absolutely creepy and unlikeable. Even the cute text banter didn't make my disgust from him go away. I think what didn't help was they shit he said to Emma, constantly referring her flowers and baked goods, but then he would say stuff like "I want to paint your face with my come." That's a no from me, don't care how hot you're supposed to be dude.

I hated Emma's giggles. Bothered the shit out of me.

And I'm trying harder not to yuck other's yummies, but I hate hate hate uncreative sex scenes that belong in a damn porno. Especially if it's done over and over and takes up half the book.

Come on authors! Do better and get creative!!

DNF. The writing wasn't great. The main male character's personality flipped so many switches I got whiplash.

This book gave me the ick. It was like a monotonous retelling of the hating game (control F “shortcake,” replace with “sunflower”) but with a ~ t w i s t ~ of pretty woman. Barely finished.
