Lisa Singleton has an unusual roommate-a fifty-foot dragon named Caleb who has glittering scales and a bad attitude. Little does she know that Caleb is actually a powerful warrior sent to protect her from those out to steal her magic and destroy the world. Or that Caleb can take the human form of a sexy hunk. Now, if he doesn't stop distracting her with those gorgeous bedroom eyes, they may not have time to stop their enemies before all of existence is wiped out. At least Lisa and Caleb will have savored every last minute.

You know when you're reading smut and it takes forever for the smut to get on with it?
Like the college roommates' pillow fight is interrupted by the cute pizza guy and they invite him in to "give him a tip" and then they get into a conversation about Nietzsche and you're all "What the hell?" Stupid philosophy students!
Yeah, that's not a problem in this book. We barely learn the name of the first couple before they are getting it on on a desk.
Then, we have three dragon-shifter brothers who are desperate to bang find their mates. One finds his and they are banging in love within hours. The second goes out to kidnap his so he can bang mate with her. The third talks about all of the women he bangs bangs.
Allyson James just isn't for me. I really do believe this would have been better if it were fluff, shorter and possibly written in a different style... could just be me *shrugs* 2.25 stars and a promise never to read an Allyson James again.
I bought this while giggling, mostly as a joke. Then I tried to read it. Ironically. NO REALLY. (ok, no really, I have a thing for dragons) I couldn't make it past the first chapter.
That was about 5 years ago. Since then, I started a book club with five other women. We get together once a month for mimosas and smutty books, as well as, of course, all of the latest gossip about our lives. It's been a transformative experience. Sometimes we revel in awful books, but invariably, someone finds a silver lining. Like that character had a good relationship with her mom, this other one talked about cooking in a meaningful way. We find commonality where we can.
I decided to try this again and my how people do change. This time, I was ok with the writing. It was actually pretty good compared to some of the stuff I've read in smutty book club. This was pure unadulterated wish fulfillment, and I liked it. You have to know what to expect here, and it's not much. But there's some sexy times, there's some comeuppance, and even one of my favorite things made it into this book - when the bad guy becomes almost kind of a good guy.
I liked the side romance better than the main romance and apparently the next book is all about that other couple, so I bet I'll be picking it up.
The only thing that saved this from a 1 star rating was that the last 80 pages or so were pretty good. I was soo disappointed in Allyson James. I have read her before, as Allyson James, and as Jennifer Ashley- who wrote one of my favorite books--Pride Mates-- and the Immortals series. Well, if you like dragons, and Chinatown, San Fran...you'll love this. I now know more about dim sum and Chinatown, than I ever cared to. I also didn't like the halting way Allyson James wrote this book. It had to be stylistic, because I've read plenty by her before and she can write more than 4 word sentences, so she must have done it for a reason. I guess.
Okay, so Lisa is half Scottish (red hair) and a quarter Chinese (almond shaped eyes and bronzed skin) can you picture it? She inherits her Grandma Li Na's apartment and with it the golden dragon (Caleb) in the spare bedroom. But when a black dragon (Malcolm) threatens Lisa, he becomes a hottie human. The plot itself was good, but man oh man, every few paragraphs were devoted to Chinatown descriptions. And in a textbook-y way, not a pleasant point of view way. I skimmed a lot. Then black dragon Malcolm turns out to not be the bad guy, but an evil witch is the villain. I liked watching her get her come-uppance, but I really was ambivalent to the rest. I would read the rest of the series because I have hopes for Ms. James to redeem herself with me-it's hard when one of your favorites writes a book you don't like. Besides, isn't everyone entitled to one bad book?
Maybe the next one will be better? I sure hope so, since I liked Saba, and part of what kept me going was Saba and Malcolm. What kept me reading was the fact that I was on vacation and this was the only book I brought to read. But still...if Saba and Malcolm's book fell into my hands I'd read it, otherwise, I won't go out of my way to get it.
This was a quick read with an interesting concept and world. It's not very often that Chinese culture, San Francisco or dragons are featured in romance novels.
Everyone has their eye on Lisa Singleton because she has untapped immennse power, only she doesn't know it. The only thing she knows is that there's a golden dragon living in her apartment. His name is Caleb and he's there to protect her from the black dragon. The two have struck up an unlikely friendship, although the puzzling human emotions (possessiveness) that Caleb feels for Lisa alarm him. When the black dragon uses an acquaintance of Lisa's to try and get to her, Caleb pleads with witch Saba to turn him into a human so he can enter our world and protect Lisa even more. She allows him to, but only until Lisa is safe. The chemistry and affection between Lisa and Caleb is immediate and overwhelming, and soon the two are falling in love while trying to unravel why Lisa is a target, what was Lisa's grandmother hiding, and who exactly can they trust.
I loved the sweet romance between Caleb and Lisa. At first I thought, uh-oh, warrior dragon thrown into our world, he's probably going to be an over-bearing alpha. But Caleb is more driven by his protective instincts than using his might to rule Lisa. He cherishes her, and it was nice to see a strong hero become vulnerable for his woman without being pushed into a corner. Lisa is a great heroine: she's been hurt before, but she doesn't let it color her interactions with Caleb.
The paranormal aspect is good, also, and the worldbuilding seems solid. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. B
A whole lot of mehhhhhhhh...with some squicky and memorable (in an awful way) food sex tossed into the mix. The insipid and rather TSTL heroine creates an ice cream sundae (yeah, you read that right) on the gigantic manly man hero's turgid and tumescent manly parts, complete with cherry "right on the tip of his hardness." Not sexay. Not anywhere near it, really.
Combine squicky food sex with rather repetitive and info-dump writing, plus questionable Chinese cultural aspects (uh, I'm Chinese and I grew up in San Francisco, so I dare pass judgment on this part, actually), and I was non-wowed by this book. Also, the heroine buys the H an "I <3 SF" T-shirt (NON-ironically), which automatically earns her negative points from the fashion police and drops this rating at least one star.
Redeeming aspects: The hero is a dragon who is in human form for the first time. His cluelessness when learning about the human world is pretty cute and charming. The idea of the dragon world is also pretty cool, but I didn't find the execution or description of it compelling. Also, non-Caucasion main characters always catch my eye - it's just unfortunate she's TSTL.
This book was awful, but earnest. I might have given it two stars if not for the extensive rapey qualities of the story. Details below.
After reading the Stormwalker series I went to check out the author's back list, and WOO BOY there is a huge difference in quality. The prose is overwrought and repetitive, especially in the first 100 pages where the author seems to have added buildup but not reread for flow. The plot is poorly constructed, too: the heroine powers up too much and too fast with everything wrapped up easily in a tension-less action scene at the end.
The characters are empty cutouts, and I didn't feel anything for any of them but discomfort and anger. Both the romance and the secondary romance are with dragons that have tight control on the minds of their love interests. Lisa is with the good gold dragon and gains power in a way that cuts those ties, but she willingly goes back out of love. Caleb only pushes her in the direction of sex a few times with his power, but it's pretty uncomfortable anyway.
The neutral black dragon, however, forces Saba the instant he meets her. He starts to kind of like her because she tries to fight his control, but she repeatedly admits to herself that she is enslaved and she likes it, likes what he made her do, and is falling in love with him.
The book focuses on how awful the witches are for enslaving and hurting dragons for power, but apparently dragons get a pass on that. No one seems unhappy about the rape, even at the end.
The only redeeming quality is that throughout the story, you can just FEEL the author trying her best. She grows and her later stuff is MUCH better. Try that instead.
Lisa Singleton's world is like no others. She lives with a real, live golden dragon whom she inherited along with her grandmother's property.
The snarky Caleb is a surprisingly good companion for the lonely young gal trying to make her way in a new city, but when a black dragon in the form of a human sets his eyes on Lisa, Caleb decides it's time to become more than just an impotent watcher from dragonspace.
When Lisa finds herself in the middle of a attack by one bent on capturing her for the black dragon, the last thing she expects is for Caleb to show up in human form and save the day. And what a sexy rescuer Caleb turns out to be!
Caleb and Lisa quickly find themselves falling in love but can they learn to work together before the black dragon completes his plan to use Lisa to get back to his own world, as well as get to the heart of another wicked alliance that threatens their very existence, before the forces arrayed against them destroy the earth and all its inhabitants.
At first, I found the premise of Dragon Heat to be a wonderfully refreshing hook in the wildly popular paranormal sub-genre of romance, unfortunately the plot ended up being convoluted, the characters lacking in heat and the narrative just all around- Blah. I did enjoy discovering the mystery behind the heroine, however that could not make up for the fact this couple had zero chemistry to hold my interest long enough to care what happened to them.
In the end, a big disappointment as well as a big snore.
Boring. I couldn't even get past the 11% mark without yawning and wanting to put it down. 4 chapters in and barely anything had happened except that Caleb has become a golden, studly human and hormones at first sight has made everyones clothes fall off. Usually I can at least say that the writing was good even if I didn't like a story itself, but even that was lacking (not completely horrendous, but very "meh").
Caleb, a golden dragon (warrior-dragon) has been sent to Lisa to protect her from Malcolm, a black dragon wanting to use Lisa's powers, she hasn't any knowledge of yet. To be able to protect her more effectively Caleb is turned into human form by one of the witches that sent him to Lisa. Caleb is strong , witty and smart for a golden dragon, who are supposed to just fight, eat and mate. Adjusting to his human form takes a little work but he blends into it perfectly. Lisa is brave, caring and innocent of the great powers she possesses but together they find out and they find each other in the process. Caleb and Lisa are a perfect match, be it sexual or magical
Yep, found me another keeper-series amidst the storm of new releases! In this book Allyson James takes you into a magical world of golden, black and silver dragons, witches, incubi and ancient oriental magic. All covered in a seemingly everyday world. It's magical and sensual.
A page-turner containing an original plot and a new concept of dragons and the dragonworld. It very distantly touches the feeling the Immortals caused inside me (the series Allyson's alter ego Jennifer Ashley created). The enthralling writing style and world building have the same attracting qualities that just pull you into this world and you never want to come out again. This is a whole other and utterly fascinating world, never thought dragons could be so hot! The title of the book suggests dragons and heat. Well there's a lot of both. After Caleb turns human and Lisa finds out the how and why of her powers, the heat really turns up in some steamy erotic scenes. One in particular involving ice-cream and chocolate sauce.
When I was reading the book, I was hoping for a book on Malcolm, the black dragon, in the future, because to be honest he captured my attention big time and actually more than Caleb did, and believe me Caleb was amazing....but Caleb is sweet and golden despite being a great warrior. But Malcolm is dark and mysterious enough to leave you wanting more. I was hoping for his story with Saba, one of the witches and my wish came true because book 2 of the Dragons-series is their story and it will be coming out in November 2007!
Allyson James has once again created a series that has captured my interest through the way she weaves magic with steamy hot sensuality and creates an great world and amazing characters.
Review: This is another retrospective review. I've read the Dragon series by Allyson James sometime ago and I'm going to review these books together since they have similar traits. The main thing I like about these books is the author's "voice". Allyson James is a very good story teller. She is one of those rare ones who can weave a story around a reader's head and make a reader forget reality. Completely whisk you away to another world. She creates a world with such convincing authentic flare that suspension of disbelief is too easy. The magic system is believable. None of those, well it's like that because it's magic, no rhyme no reason. No, in the Dragon series the magic is like that because... it has a cause. A reason which is believable. I guess that is one of the reasons that her story telling quality is very very compelling because of the "convincing quality of her stories". I could go on and on and on about things I like about theses books but I'll let you find out for yourself instead...
The thing I hate most about this series is that it takes years... I mean YEARS! to wait for the next one!! Like book 3 was published in 2008, it's the end of 2010, when is book 4 coming out already?!
World building = 5 Story telling quality = 5 Character development = 4.5 Stories themselves = 4 Ending = 4.5 Plot = 4.5
This was a very entertaining read indeed! The movie did not do it any justice at all. The succedding books did not compare either.
1.5 stars The first thing that popped out at me was the writing, and not in a good way. It was stiff. It used the same type of sentences throughout the whole book, boring me. Variation in sentences was needed. For instance, using one word sentences is okay. In fact, more that okay, it is needed. I found no one-word sentences in this book.
Another thing that I couldn't handle was the info-dumping. Long, looooooooooong passages of info. You get the picture. If I wanted to read long passages of info, I'd crack open my science textbooks. At least then I'd know it was done on purpose. In a story, it just flags the author's inexperience to feed it to us in little bits, small enough that we barely notice. Hear that? "That we barely notice." That is the way it should be.
The characters were kind of flat. The fact that they had sex all the time did not add to their character depth. It just tried to mask that there was little else. The leads were very weak.
While there was a plot, it was presented in such a way that I didn't really care how the book ended, only that it ended. I have a weird compulsion to finish reading, like dropping a book means unfinished business. I am slowly learning to drop books though. There are too many books to finish all of them.
While I did find the dragon lore interesting, it just wasn't presented right. I won't be reading the next book.
I really loved this book. I've read so few book about dragons and I was so excited to read this. I was disappointed in the least bit. I really loved Caleb. He's a dragon who had to learn and adapt to human ways in other to be able to protect Lisa and he was so charming. The story was very engaging and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also loved Malcolm. I felt sorry for him being a dragon trapped on earth and not able to go home. I loved Saba too. She was a very strong witch and a very lovable character. I very anxious to know what will come of Malcolm and Saba's relationship with the way it ended in this book.
Here is where I sit on magical love potions, spells and compulsions: If both individuals are affected by it, I equate it to love at first sight. Improbable and magical. Even if one person holds more knowledge than the other, at the end of the day both have lives upturned and for me that levels the playing field. However, if only one member of the "couple" experiences induced love, I view that as the same as mental rape. Even if after the potions, spells or compulsions are removed, there is no way to say where the influences have ended and true feeling began. Hypocritically, I also love Lestat, so feel free to love this book.
I liked my first book in this series. Dragon Caleb who is a Golden dragon is the protecter of Lisa. He has been put in charge of being her protecter but an evil witch. Lisa's grandmother has passed on and knew of the golden dragon and the spell that kept him from truly coming into this world. A door in Lisa's apartment keeps him from stepping into the world from dragonspace. When Lisa's life is threatened Caleb will cross space to come into Lisa's world to save her but at what cost to his own and this world? I really liked the start of this series.
The Dragon Series is a tale of love, dragons and plain old happy bonking. Now there's not a lot of bonking but be warned you may be like holy, moly if you read it. The story centers on a modern day city and a mythical dragon homeworld called Dragonspace. In book one, we read the love story of Lisa, a 1/4 Chinese woman with a broken heart and Caleb, a Golden, warrior dragon. I don't want to reveal too but there's a BA witch, scary supes and a surprise you don't see coming.
Caleb is cute, “you do not need Greg Shaw,” he said now. “I like you, and if I were human, I would mate with you. Now, sit down and stay with me. It’s almost time for Cops.” Caleb seems to give the best answers, “you were mortally wounded, then became a dragon and had wild and wicked sex with me. Why should you not be hungry?” I liked Caleb and this book this was a good start to a series.
I gave it three instead of two because towards the last half of the book, it picked up and I enjoyed it a lot more. I'm getting ready to read the next book, and I'm excited because I really liked those two characters in book one.
good start to a series. I liked the concept of being a dragon only in Dragonworld but retaining some powers while in human form. Conflict with Black Dragon was entertaining but not all that tense.
I love dragons and I was hoping this would be a good book. This book turned out a lot different than I expected. The author put an interesting twist on dragon’s and witches. I thought it was interesting that dragons lived in dragon space and the only humans that had access to them were witches. Witches enslaved dragons for their power. Usually people think of monsters in their closet but not Lisa, she has a dragon living in her spare bedroom. Caleb is not in the human world but in dragon space, and is only allowed to look into the human world from a doorway in Lisa’s room. Caleb has been compelled by a witch to protect Lisa, but he knows that he can’t do that properly if he can only watch her from a doorway. He convinces another witch to let him into the human world as a man, so he can better protect her. Lisa likes talking to her dragon through the doorway, but she likes it even more when he is turned into a human and allowed into the human world. Lisa new that her grandmother had powerful magic, but she didn’t think she had any magic until her grandma died and passed it along to her. Lisa finds that she has inherited much more than just magic.
I love fantasy novels. I've read most of them - Sookie, Cat, Kitty,... I really love them all. But this book was probably the worst I've ever read in this genre. The writing style is very shallow. After the first 'erotic' scene, I felt disgusted. And the golden dragon aka hero looked like a 6-pack on legs having left any of his brain somewhere in dragonland. Leaving only one question open... How can the author dare to take money for this trash and waste our precious lifetime with reading it?
It's ridiculous. And as I thoroughly enjoy ridiculous things, I thought the story was rather fun. I liked the ambiguous-ness of the "bad guy" as well. As much as I enjoy black and white stories, it's fun to read about complicated "villains" who have actual reasons for their behavior (even if it is mostly selfish). I enjoyed the dynamic between the main characters and the plot twists that just kept getting wilder! Overall, not for the serious minded, though.
it was really hard to finish this book, everything just dragged on and i think it was way longer than it needs to be. most the time it was boring but just interesting enough to wonder what was really going on. i skipped about 200 ebook pages and it really made no difference to the story. And the story spent so much time with the couple from the next book it made it feel at some point this was their book instead of the H&h's. :(
