Gage Fabre has been attending meetings regarding the city’s dimming lights, but so far, no one knows why it’s happening. He and his fellow unit brothers can only concentrate on recovering kidnapped fae and supporting their queen.

Nightly visions of a beautiful woman engulfed in flames haunt him. Sleepless nights and increased drills leaves him feeling frayed. Will their world ever be safe again?

Zoe Appleblossom has just started her familial obligation to act as Fire Temple Head when an urgent request comes in from Eire Danu. Unlike her older brother and sister, her magic, is a bit more, wild. Both excited for a chance to leave and concerned for the fae, she immediately heads toward Eire Danu.

But all of her excitement fades when she arrives in the City of Eternal Sun and experiences a cold and seeping darkness that leaves her shaken.

As feelings of self doubt plague her, she finds a glimmer of hope in the man she discovers as her mate. Side by side they race to find answers, but can their combined efforts drive off the shadows and restore the light of an entire city?

Oh god, this book felt like coming home 🥹 5 stars!!

I’ve reread the B&B series at least 3 times in the past few months. It’s a series that soothes my anxiety because it’s full of love, light, and joy amongst the drama. Meryn and her ever-growing family are my home. When I first finished the series back in 2021, it was just as Alanea’s health issues were playing up but as someone who was going through something similar, I totally understood. The wait has killed me but it’s been worth it!!

I knew from previous books that Gage would be a wonderful mate but Zoe was such a pleasant surprise! She fit right in with Meryn and the Gang of Misfits and I wanted to crawl into the book and cuddle her. I loved that their mating wasn’t focused on actual mating and instead revolved around introducing her to a new world and a new found family. I can’t wait to see what shenanigans our family gets up to next!!

I love/hate that the mystery wasn’t solved in this one. Mostly because I’m impatient and need to know how our gang will save the day against the reapers haha.

For now, I’ll continue rereading until the next one and trying to convince everyone else to read this series! 😍

3.5 🌟 I feel like this was a filler book, still love her writing and will continue to read the series. Just disappointed we didn’t progress. One more fae book then we should be moving on to Storm Keep! I’m so ready to get Keelen back.

I really enjoy this series, something I was reminded of as I blitzed though the re-read in order to refresh my memory for this one. Though as I mentioned in my book 1 review, it won't be everyone's cup of tea ... it is definitely mine. I love the humor, I love Meryn, and I love the fact that Meryn and Aiden stay central to the story for all the books.

One teeny point of criticism though: more recent books feel more like a chapter, less like a book. What I mean by that is in earlier books, there was the strong overarching story, yes (that Meryn and Aiden were key to, which is why they stay strongly present in all books), but there was also a book-specific arc that was completed by the end of the book, which gave a satisfying conclusion to that book and that couple. That started getting loosey-goosey with the virus in Noctem Falls, because they made it all the way through that stretch of 5 books before the arc was concluded. But it still worked okay because each FMC had a specific thing to contribute that was a building block to the solve. That was good with me - treating and curing a virus is a multi-pronged thing, and each woman had a specialty that contributed to the whole, but their book really landed their block of the whole.

Since coming to Eire Danu the books have felt very inconclusive. I think partially that is because what is happening in Eire Danu is less concrete. A virus in Noctem Falls, that's super concrete - a thing we can define and track progress against one step at a time. But conversely, from the first book - Izzy / Oron - Eire Danu's situation has been vague. That first book was more about getting Oron set up as a prince and getting Meryn's backstory (and Izzy making coffee ... which, don't get me wrong, love me some coffee ... but it's a weird thing when all the FMCs have been awesomely specialized as if Fate was weaving an intricate tapestry to land them in the right place at the right time). It didn't really kick off any overall arc, other than someone seeing a shadowy feral in the city. Are they being invaded? It seems like that's the slowly unfolding plan here. In the second book - Brie / Ari and the missing citizens - we find out that people living outside the city are unaccounted for, but no individual thread of it has wrapped up. There are still thousands of people missing, and they've not made any concrete progress towards finding them.

Then this book, it's kind of tabled - the lights in the city are going out. Seems related to the shadowy ferals, right? Trying to plunge the city into darkness to make their (assumed) invasion easier. And continue to smash morale, through the missing / dying people and the encroaching darkness. But we don't solve the issue with the lights, at all. In fact, there isn't even really any forward movement to the issue that Zoe was brought in to solve. She looks at 2 lights and doesn't find anything wrong, and meanwhile the city of light continues to get dimmer and colder.

It means that plot-wise, it feels like we're carrying a ton of dead weight going into the next book. People are missing, and they're finding piles of bodies ... and they haven't identified rhyme or reason there, so all they can do is run around slapping bandages on, so we're still carrying the weight from Brie/Ari. And the city is still getting darker and colder each day, so we're still carrying the weight from Zoe/Gage. I'm worried we're going to end up with too many threads dragging along for anything to be featured properly in the next book (where the blurb makes it seem like it is introducing another character that has minimal purpose (I'm looking at you, coffee goddess) to the overall arc). It's cool that Meryn is a central character to all the books - as I've said, I love that. But if in the next book we have to keep Meryn central (because the whole story revolves around her, as it should), and Brie for the missing people, and Zoe for the solution to the light, AND this new couple ... I don't think that anyone is going to have the page time to get proper handling at all.

I love this series, but I'm worried.

Oh my lord! This one was great like the others. However, I would have liked it if Amelia's parents and brothers came in after or right when Meryn vomited and I did want it to be longer.

But it is a very good book. One problem I see in these books is that most of the mates are pregnant in their book or a bit later in other books. Some mates had adopted a child or children before or during their books. Not one of the mates had had a blood child from a boyfriend/ husband. Did I wonder why?

Cannot wait for the next one.
I like the new girl. All bad ass as someone told.
I miss more Ryuu times but Meryn times was good as always.
Probably need an organigram to follow all the characters. I'm not Pip.

Be my guiding light
This book has everything I needed to make it a fantastic PNR! I absolutely loved Zoe! She’s sweet and kind and innocent, but she is not afraid to try, and with each day and experience we got to watch her strength grow. And Gage is that alpha male hottie who supports her strength, even when it goes against his nature to do so. I love that Meryn is her normal self, and all of my favorite characters are along for the ride. Add in some more family revelations and new peeps to fall in love with, and I was hooked. This book resulted in an all nighter full of big reveals and big hearts that was worth every minute. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this world of paranormals!

Sadly, my least favorite book in the series. I was unable to feel a strong connection with the two main characters or experience their story develop. There was not enough one on one time with each other and majority of the book was spent around a table either eating or drinking. Also, Meryn & Amelia has been pregnant for quite some time so I’m anxious when they are due and the unfolding of the plot with the demon hopefully in the next book! Furthermore, I read this book on my kindle and the first chapter was meshed together with no signs of a paragraph or dialogue separation. It was quite frustrating.

I always love it when a new book in this series comes out. The world is fun, I love how Meryn folds everyone into her family and makes them feel welcomed, introduced them to all sorts of food and drink wonders, while indoctrinating them into helping with all her crazy plans/schemes. This time is no different. From the moment that Zoe appears, she is welcomed with open arms, finds people willing to fight on her behalf and gets to experience the world without being held back. As much joy as Zoe brings to everyone, she helps at key moments when needed and looked to getting a mate as something wonderous. All in all this one was a great addition to the series.

Well worth the wait.

I loved Zoe and Gage and the storyline was interesting with more insights into the evil that is Storm Keep.

We get a quick glimpse of some Noctem Falls favorites, we are introduced to two new characters that will become favorites and another clue falls into place.

Alenea has had some serious health issues that had delayed this book. That said the wait was worth it. Answers were given and more questions were asked. We see our friendly faces as well as new ones. Gage is smoking hot and Zoe knows what she wants . Please read My Beacon as it is intended the next book in the series that I for one don't want it to finish. Aleanea you rock, woman hear you roar.

I think this a weak book, unfortunately. We have tens of characters, at times all sound the same, the main characters are declaring their love on the 2nd day after they've met.
Zoe, the heroine, receives 2 old children as squires - they are hundreds of years and they look and act like children?! I'm sure/ I hope there's more to this. A day or so after the children arrive, they are not squires anymore, they are adopted by the main characters and Zoe is saying and feeling all the love in the word for them. In 1 day!
I feel this was a mess.

It was ok. I feel like nothing has been resolved with the lights dimming. I wish there would have been a bit more investigating of the dimming lights and more one on one time between Gage and Zoe. How long is Meryn’s pregnancy going to last ? There wasn’t any mention with how she is doing to the point that I thought her pregnancy was written out of the story. I hope the next book will be better.

The book was good and the story is what I've come to expect with Alanea's writing style. I would've given it 5 stars if it wasn't for the following issues.

First, the book was unnecessary as it didn't further the overall main storyline. I have had an issue with this series in regards to this since about book 8. While I enjoy the story about the Unit Warriors finding their mates cool it has become monotonous with the exception of the last book where Alanea finally began to peel the layers that is Meryn back and has given us more. Loved that.

Second, Zoe's story is incomplete. They never found out the reason why the Fae city is losing it's light and heat. It seems that this tangent is similar to the Vampire city's mysterious illness. Whatever.

I think Alanea could double up on the Unit Warriors and mates in most of these books. Therefore speeding up the storyline.

Also, how long has this story been going on in book time? I mean Meryn is pregnant and it was only mentioned a couple of times. I could swear she should be about to pop.

I have read each of the books in this series and because I am invested in the conclusion and really enjoy the characters. Fix these issues and I would've given it 5 stars.

Not quite what we have been waiting for. And it’s been a long wait. Don’t get me wrong, it was a fun enjoyable read and from any other author I’d probably have thought it was great but it wasn’t up to the standard of the rest of the series which is both hilarious and suspenseful. And it was shorter than the other books.

This felt like a placeholder and we already got one of those with My Gifts at Christmas. The story wasn’t advanced any, there were little in the way of comedic moments. And where was Felix? He wasn’t even mentioned by name in the one sentence in the whole book about the sprite. Instead we got two “cute kids” who were kids when it suited and not when it didn’t.

I’m hoping the next instalment is back up to standard and my recommendation to the author would be to read her own series before writing anyth8ng else.

Ok this was a bit short and as far as I can tell nothing was resolved. The lights are still going out and the ferals are still as elusive as ever. I am happy that Gage found his mate and that she escaped her 'jailors' in time but I still feel a bit cheated that there was no resolution to any of the problems the Units are facing. Kinda feel let down here!

The repetitive nature of some aspects of these books is beginning to grate. Everyone being related to everyone and adopting each other, please stop. And this weird thing with ages- the boys look 6 bug are hundreds of years old, the sprite are babies but old. How exactly is someone who has lived 100 years only just of age? Did they just not mature that entire time period? Meryn is in her 30s but acts like an emotionally disregulated toddler; which I suppose fits with the weird supernatural aging timeline.

There isn't really an over-arching plot with this book. Zoe investigates the lights, and her upbringing makes them realise the Witches Council are dicks. A fewer smaller portals in the city, and a disastrous warehouse run. There's no resolution to the lights. The romance between Gage and Zoe gets a bit shoved to the side. She goes from exploring all these new things, to being a mother.

Am I thinking too hard about these books? Yes, can I stop? No.

P.S. In another point of overthinking, there's a distinct lack of history being mentioned. These characters are hundreds and thousands of years old, America is a very young country. So are they like native americans? The first immigrants? Were they raised in Europe and moved during Victorian times and that's why they're stuck? Are they still victorian because it was the industrial revolution and everything koved too wuickly after that? If they're all older than victorian times, why did their culture progress past different time periods but stop at victorian? Gavriel alone is like 10,000 years old, that's caveman times but he's obviously not that so are supernatural naturally more progressive and left humans alone? When was their Great War in this time period, like human's Great War of World War 1? All of these characters would also have been arohnd during both World Wars but its never mentioned, did supernaturals get involved or just hide in their pillar cities until the human war was done? Or is it ignored for the same reason that the movie Minions put the minions in hiding during World War 2 because then you'd have to think about if any characters would join the nazis. Okay, I need to stop thinking, I have a problem with thought tangents.

The author returned with the 13th book in the series, and despite such a long break the link to the universe and its lore is brilliant! The way the threads of all the plots have been coming together, the issues with Storm Keep and the enemies breaking into each of the pillar cities. The romance in this book is lovely as well, the heroine being a sheltered and almost oppressed young woman, but she is not a complete doormat and her personality is much more than the abuse met out to her previously. The hero and the trauma in his own family makes him a very sensitive person, the evolution of their relationship is great to read. Two things that I wish would be different is that Meryn’s little jellybean is only mentioned maybe 80% into the book, even-though they were in stressful situations before, where the pregnancy being mentioned would be relevant. The second issue is the simplistic resolution of the hero and his father’s relationship the ease with which the father admits to his wrong behaviour towards the mother, a little more exploration of the trauma and angst there could have made the book better. That being said I love how the author gives us just enough resolution of secrets to satisfy us while building enough suspense to make us curious about the next book but doesn’t frustrated us while we wait.

Not much happened in this book, and I didn’t particularly like the main characters.

Zoe escapes to Eire Danu to help with the lighting (I’m not 100% clear on the issue with that or how it links to the ferals) and meets Grant. The plot with the ferals continues but mostly towards the end of the book.

I didn’t really like Zoe. She’s instantly taken into the family, just like all the other main characters, but with her, I wanted the characters to actually get to know her and not immediately start calling her sister and falling over themselves to do things for her. I think I didn’t like Grant either, but he didn’t have much of a personality so there wasn’t much to like.

The plot was mentioned, but not much happens. Zoe is supposed to check the lights and only she can do it because they were made by Appleblossoms. However, she only really checks two centers and there’s nothing wrong with them, so nothing evolves when it comes to that aspect of the plot.

There were some scenes with the characters from the other books, but not enough.

I wasn’t a fan of this book, but I’m hoping the next ones will be better.

I cannot emphasize enough how much I absolutely love AND adore this series!! I have so patiently been waiting for My Beacon and it was absolutely well worth the wait!!

I will preface this by saying The Bewitched and Bewildered series is in my top 3 favorite series of all time, I don’t have the right words to explain how much I love this world and how much I love the characters. So, take my review for what you will (I promise I’m not trying to be biased) I just love these books that much.

I loved the couple we got to focus on in this book (each book has a new mated pair but, the story is on going and so expertly woven) and how quickly Gage and Zoe were met with so much love from so many families/mated pairs in this series! I was bawling (by page 29) and laughing through out! When Yuki and Ame were introduced from Ryuu to Zoe and Gage, I just lost it. These characters are SO special, and the love they have for each other in this series is so amazing, I just feel so light when reading these books.

If you love a HEA, brotherhood, meeting new characters and seeing your favorite characters through out a series come together repeatedly (yay) to take on the bad guys then these books are for you! They are so special, and I would recommend this book and especially this series to anyone!

I’m so thankful that while Alanea Alder has been going through so much over the last two years with various health issues that she was able to give us such an amazing story! I pray she continues to get better (health comes first 100%) and I wish her nothing but happiness and good health in the coming years! Please go read this, it’s an absolute must read!

I have been looking forward to this book for a very, very long time, and I enjoyed it, truly.

Had I not enjoyed it, had it not had the same feel of Alanea's usual style and flair with the characters, I probably wouldn't have been able to get past the first chapter. The formatting issues that caused the entire first chapter to be one long, run-on paragraph, made it an actual chore to push through. Added to that, there were distracting grammar issues like missing punctuation throughout the novel. Perhaps (hopefully) these have been fixed since, and some may gloss over such problems, but they do detract from the reading experience.

As for the story itself, while there was little progression in the overall plot, it was still a highly enjoyable journey, and I loved watching Zoe and Gage find their footing in their new family. Avoiding spoilers, some of the new dynamics added to the unit warriors made it a refreshing read.

As always, I'm looking forward to the next book, just hoping we don't see these kinds of issues again.

slightly disappointed

Alanea Alder is one of my favorite authors and I absolutely love, love, love this series. But the last couple books have slightly disappointed me. This one the most. I’m not a fan of cliff hangers. I know the story line has to counting in each book but this one didn’t solve any of the characters problems. The problems from the last book are still unsolved. In the earlier books they had problems but usually they would solve at least a little of them and the main enemy would carry over to the next book. This book just sorta let me down. It made you think too much about who and what. If I hadn’t have binge read the series before I read this one I would’ve been lost with all the characters. And I still had trouble keeping them all straight. Gage and Zoe were adorable and I loved the “family” but I feel like the books are losing some of the depth that the beginning books had. Over all a good “little read”. Would recommend the series to any one who loves stories that are emotional and heartwarming stories.

I love this series!

I am so in love with this series. When My Beacon was released, I reread them all before starting this one. I enjoyed every bit of them. My only complaints were the number of formatting errors in the first chapter or so and number of spelling errors I found. Most of the ones I found were simply the wrong word, such as “am” instead of “and”. It was easy to figure out what I thought should have been used, so it didn’t throw me off to badly. Some e-books I’ve read have had truly horrible errors to the point where I could not even finish the book. That wasn’t the case here.

Thank you Ms Alder for another fabulous and enjoyable read. I can’t wait for the next one!

So I caved and bought the book for 6.99€!
Wow, that's seriously expensive and an absolute exception for me. I normally only buy physical books for such a price and not ebooks (except it's Nalini Singh and now Alanea Alder).

All that aside...I loved the book. I liked Gage and Zoe as a couple. I liked the hints about Zoe's family, and how that too, ties into the greater plot. Besides that I loved to reconnect with the quirky characters of the previous books. I'm still not sold on the Meryn-knows-and-sees-it-all-theme, but that aside, I really liked the story and hope there will be more to come.

Also my hope is, that Ms. Alder considers writing a story for the Prince of the Vamps...and I would also love a story for Ruy. *hint, hint*
