This was my second manga classic but it definitely won’t be my last. I’m always curious about the plot of classics, but I never enjoy reading them because of the wordy and dull writing that most classics have. The manga classics fill me in on what happens in classics in a more engaging and interesting way, so I am very grateful for this series.
Anne of Green Gables was a book that I always hear praise for. It seems to be one of the most well loved classics. Unfortunately I don't love this story as much as everyone else does. I loved the manga format and I loved the artwork. I also loved Gilbert, but the story as a whole wasn’t too interesting. It was a lot of snippets from Anne’s life growing up and it didn’t seem to be one unified story with a clear plot. The pacing was fairly slow for a manga format, but I got the sense that it would’ve been even slower in the original Anne of Green Gables book.
There seemed to be some outdated stuff in this book that I wouldn’t necessarily want kids to be reading, but there was feminism in this story as well so it was a bit of a mixed bag. There were things like making such a big deal out of wanting a boy but getting a girl instead and everyone (including both Anne and the adults) were very judgmental of Anne’s appearance when she was a child. There were feminist themes throughout this manga though as Anne was able to change and become a positive person in Marilla’s life despite being a gender that Marilla had not initially wanted.
If you haven’t read a manga classic yet, I highly recommend checking one out. This one wasn’t my favorite out of all the manga classics, but I still thought it was an okay read and I know that I probably wouldn’t like the original Anne of Green Gables book as much as this manga.

I've never read the novel by L. M. Montgomery, so I can't comment on this manga adaptation's faithfulness to the original story. But what I can vouch for is that it was a wonderfully charming story and a quality production by the adaptor/illustrator team.
Anne is... a complicated child. Her antics, her overly active imagination, her feisty temper, her lack of tact, her kindness, her desire for a better life, her vanity, and zest for life all make for a great character. But she can be exhausting, too much a handful for quiet Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. Many would be tearing their hair out at a girl like her, she's trying on people's patience, but at the same time, life in a sparsely populated part of the Canadian boonies would be so much duller without her. She's not a perfect girl, she's petty, stubborn, flawed. She makes you roll your eyes, and she makes you laugh. She needed both the kind indulgence of Matthew and the strict discipilne of Marilla to become the better girl she is by the end of the story, for sure. She influences the adults and is in turn influenced by the adults, and it's for the better in the end.
Crystal Chan's style is a bit more "chibi" than the manga style I like best, but it's perfectly suited for this story more than for the other Manga Classics she's drawn for, because of the tone and atmosphere of the story. She was able to capture Anne's expressiveness, and above all the lovely Prince Edward Island settings. Out of curiosity, I googled the place, and it's beautiful! That is seen in the art, too.

Kindred spirits, it’s time for us to take a journey together. When you pass through the White Way of Delight keep going. It’s only about another mile before we reach our destination. Oh, there’s the Lake of Shining Waters. If you look over there you’ll see the house Diana lives in. She’s a kindred spirit too. Just a little further and … there it is! Green Gables! You’re home.

I’ve loved Anne since the day we met. This is such a beautiful adaptation. Everything I love about Anne’s story was included here, including her friendship with Diana, her rivalry with Gilbert and witnessing Marilla and Anne’s relationship deepen over the years. I even experienced my usual overwhelming need to hug Matthew whenever I see him.
Yes, I did get a little bit teary during that scene. You know the one I’m talking about. I think I was too distracted by how cute everyone looked though, so I managed to avoid my customary full blown ugly cry.
The illustrations were so lovely! They did make it quite difficult to take Anne’s complaints about her looks seriously because she’s so darn adorable in manga but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Her doe eyes and that little tuft of hair that’s always sticking up are just so cute!
Whenever I encounter Anne Shirley my heart feels full. I’m always left with this warm and fuzzy notion that the world is inherently beautiful and that hope and love will prevail, and this manga version of Anne’s story was no different. It left me with a delicious contented feeling. It seemed especially fitting, albeit decidedly strange given that we’re living in 2020 here, that the last sentence was:

This manga has been so well adapted.
I read the first book a few months ago and I would say the manga adaptation is quite accurate!
I love the artstyle and how convenient the art sequence is made to make the reading so apt and simple yet beautiful and charming.
I still cannot believe how accurately it captured all the emotions in the book. I don't know what more to say than it's the perfect adaptation!
I am in love with this manga publishing team ever since I read one of Betty Neels romance adaptations last year and it hasn't disappointed me even once!
So glad I got approved of this ARC from NetGalley.

I'm not a big manga fan (those enormous eyes drive me nutso!), but I'll take Anne any way I can get her. (Hence the crocheted version sitting near my computer who likes to constantly remind me how lucky we are to live in a world where there are Octobers.)
This is a pretty good adaptation; some of the dialogue is taken verbatim from the book, and the writer has captured the essence of Anne. Her enthusiasm for life, and flair for drama translates well into one of these exaggerated characters.
A few minor complaints: I have to wonder why they included the hair-dying incident that led to Anne's near-scalping, only to show Anne, just a few months later, with braids trailing down her back. It probably would have been better to just leave this episode out of the book.
Matthew looked like a bit too much like an Amish man, while poor Gilbert resembles a One Piece wannabe.
I'd hate to think that this might be a young girl/woman's first (or god forbid - ONLY!) exposure to Anne's world, though if it encourages anyone to pick up Montgomery's original book, then I applaud the effort.

I absolutely adored this manga adaptation of Anne of Green Gables! The illustrations are just so adorable, and the panels had me completely hooked. The art style is downright captivating, bursting with intricate details that brought the story to life in the most delightful way. What really got me excited was how the artwork perfectly captured the characters' emotions and the overall atmosphere of the tale. It's like the illustrations danced alongside the narrative, making every page a joyous journey.

This adaptation pleases me as much as the original novel.
I like how manga-style art really accents Anne Shirley's big emotions and reactions. I like how the text preserves sentences straight from Montgomery's novel, but condenses down (to sometimes as little as one page) or entirely eliminates (but only four times -- see a listing below) boring chapters from the more episodic and filler parts in the second half of the novel.
I have a couple more graphic novel adaptations on hand from the library, but I think they're going to have trouble reaching the bar set here.

This was such a pleasure to read. We follow the classic tale of Anne of Green Gables as she gets embarks on her new journey in a small town in PEI, in the small cozy house called Green Gables. Once she arrives she learns there has been a mistake and the family had asked for a boy. But don't you worry, Anne with an E wraps everyone in her positivity and warmth, and she soon becomes family. This follows Anna from the age of 11 when she arrives at Green Gables to when she is 17 and starts adulthood.
If you ever enjoyed reading the story of Anne of Green Gables then you would definitely enjoy this as well. This has all the charm and heart of the original story with the upside of seeing Anne in all of her mischief. Anne is as captivating as every with her dialogue and every character, even the smaller one, are just so pleasant to read about. Just like Anne, you can't help love this story.
The art is this mange is of classic manga style and unexpectedly suits the story. the illustrator did a great job in really embodying the feeling of Green Gables.
Overall I highly recommend this book!

Anne of Green Gables is one of my favorite book of all time and I was really excited to read this manga adaptation of it.
Anne is an orphan girl adopted by mistake by the Cuthburts who wanted to originally adopted boy. Luckily they decided to keep and raise her and we can follow her heartwarming story of growing up with them.
The artist made a great job with illustrations as they are perfect for each character. This version of Anne of Green Gables is perfect for people who wants some shorter read.

The perfect combination of a beloved classic and the Manga format. Crystal S. Chan and Kuma Chan worked together seamlessly to give readers the essence of Anne, Green Gables, and all the other characters making the story come to life. I especially appreciated the Foreward by Katie Macdonald Butler(granddaughter of L.M. Montgomery) and Crystal S. Chan's notes on Adapting Anne of Green Gables. Highly recommended!

In my opinion, this is the most entertaining, fun, and creative adaptation I have read of Anne of Green Gables that also manages to stay quite true to the original book.

The setting of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables is stunning. There is the beauty of the nearby ocean, with beaches filled with reddened sand. And the smell of the lush greenery and delicate flowers that are abundant during the warm months. This is quite a famous classic and I was so thrilled to see that there was a manga copy available since this provides a new arena for this story to be told, in an addition to all other adaptations (e.g., film, audio theatre, graphic novels, etc.)
Now, let’s discuss the manga itself. The manga is quite true to the book, which is the first of many books about Anne Shirley. The original book itself was written in 1908 and covers Anne’s life from the age of 11-16 in which you see a lot of personal growth and development of her character with time. The manga does a great job of illustrating Anne, her adoptive family, and other characters, as well as the home in which Anne lives. I was very impressed with the care that was taken to ensure the setting and scenery appeared accurate. Some characters have differences in appearance and I think those distinctions were translated quite well using manga artwork!
Anne has a very distinctive voice and doesn’t quite talk or act like anyone I’ve read about in any other book - and I think this was very well captured by the manga, which appears to be quite similarly and well adapted from the original dialogue. In fact, all of the characters - their dialogue and actions feel quite authentic!
I also appreciate the ancillary information at the end of the book which includes Crystal C. Chan’s thoughts and process on adapting the book: setting the focus, processing the details, Easter eggs, notes on incorporating feminism into the manga, and the ways in which manga is a strong medium for presenting the book.
In my opinion, this is the most entertaining, fun, and creative adaptation I have read of Anne of Green Gables that also manages to stay quite true to the original book. It was a total joy to read and I’m so happy it is in illustrated form since I think it has the potential to create an impact on young readers and fans of manga, alike!

Anne has a very distinctive voice and doesn’t quite talk or act like anyone I’ve read about in any other book - and I think this was very well captured by the manga, which appears to be quite similarly and well adapted from the original dialogue. In fact, all of the characters - their dialogue and actions feel quite authentic!
I also appreciate the ancillary information at the end of the book which includes Crystal C. Chan’s thoughts and process on adapting the book: setting the focus, processing the details, Easter eggs, notes on incorporating feminism into the manga, and the ways in which manga is a strong medium for presenting the book.
In my opinion, this is the most entertaining, fun, and creative adaptation I have read of Anne of Green Gables that also manages to stay quite true to the original book. It was a total joy to read and I’m so happy it is in illustrated form since I think it has the potential to create an impact on young readers and fans of manga, alike!

This manga has been so well adapted.
I read the first book a few months ago and I would say the manga adaptation is quite accurate!
I love the artstyle and how convenient the art sequence is made to make the reading so apt and simple yet beautiful and charming.
I still cannot believe how accurately it captured all the emotions in the book. I don't know what more to say than it's the perfect adaptation!
I am in love with this manga publishing team ever since I read one of Betty Neels romance adaptations last year and it hasn't disappointed me even once!
So glad I got approved of this ARC from NetGalley.

I love how fiercely independent most of the characters in this series are and are made to be that way. This story was way ahead of its times and written in such a way as to show the best sides of adults, children and the school authorities instead of keeping on focus the dreaded monotonous life and what was expected of a girl child to become.
The basic lessons this series try to tell is girl child education and upliftment, independence and being conscious of what's going on around, sieze the opportunities whenever they present themselves, being there for those in need, friendship and found families.
Totally in love with the characters. I love how Gilbert Blythe turned out to be the handsome amazing guy he's supposed to be. And I totally love Anne's best friend Diana. I totally adore her adoptive parents.
Best fictional parents 🖤

This was a much quicker read than I expected it to be and it left my head reeling, what with all of Anne’s constant yapping. But that was one of the manga’s many strengths: it’s ability to accurately capture Anne’s true spirit.
This was beautifully illustrated. Anne looked so pretty in every frame she appeared in. And all the details and drawing style very much suited the story.
I’m not sure if this was a good adaptation, after all, I haven’t read the original Anne of Green Gables books. But I have watched the Netflix show Anne with an E and for the most part this manga followed many of the storylines from season 1 and 2. It skimmed through a lot of moments like a sort of overview of Anne’s growth but it was still quite interesting to see. And the moments it did focus on were poignant or fun. There was a noticeable lack of antagonistic moments though.
Anne’s friendship with Diana Barry and her love/hate relationship with Gilbert Blythe were so sweet to see. I wanted more of the latter because I found the manga ended quite abruptly, but I understood there was a lot of ground to cover. Perhaps this manga would benefit from a sequel in the future!

This manga version of Anne of Green Gables is a delightful little read! I just finished reading the original Anne of Green Gables, which is why it took me so long to get to this book. I wanted to make sure I read. the original and could do a good comparison. And man, it was an accurate and lovely little resource to read the story in a different way. I really liked the illustrations and I felt like it worked really well with the material.
Anne and her kindred spirit are expressed with bright eyes and quirky traits. Matthew has one scene where his eyes are so big it's comical, but that was the only negative I could even think about this book. He looked kinda funny for a single frame.
Overall, this book is a great resource! If you loved Anne or if you want a different way to take this novel in, grab it! I think this manga classic is an excellent adaptation and I really loved jumping back in Avalon.
Four out of five stars.

There is a foreword by Kate McDonald Butler, L.M. Montgomery's granddaughter.
The story, as well as other Manga Classics adaptations, is faithfully adapted. I like the way the characters and Green Gables are depicted. You can even find a plan of the house!

I have memories of watching some kind of screen adaptation (I don't remember exactly which one) of Anne of Green Gables when I was a kid. I haven't seen Netflix's Anne with an E and neither have I read the original book. But I have been following Manga Classics for a while, so when I saw on Netgalley they had done Anne of Green Gables next - of course I had to read it.
They are very proud to say they are the only authorized Manga adaptation - which made me wonder exactly how many there are out there. Reading that state however made me realized that I actually already read a graphic novel of Anne of Green Gables a couple of years ago, which was also quite nice.
The art - as always - is very nice and I thought it captured Anne's spirit quite well. While I can't compare it to the original book, normally these adaptations stay very close to the original work (even using lines from the books for much if not all of the text). I wouldn't be surprised if this was also the case for the Anne adaptation.
This is a great way to introduce Anne of Green Gables to a new audience - those who might be tempted less to start an older book - but just as much fun for those who have read/would gladly read the original.

To this day I still love the Anne of Green Gables story, so when I got an opportunity to read the Manga version of my favorite childhood book, I was more then excited to dive into it. And I am so happy to report that the Manga version did not disappoint! I loved the illustrations and I would have loved them even more if they were full of color, same as the book's cover.
This version of the classic is a perfect way to read a classic novel in a fun and easy way, and I will definitely buy a copy of this book for my 10-year-old daughter who loves graphic novels. Reading this book was a wonderful way to go back to my childhood days and re-discover Anne Shirley's world all over again.

I absolutely LOVED this manga adaptation of one of my top favorite books, Anne of Green Gables! It stays true to the story and gives a unique spin to a well-loved classic, even including actual dialogue from the original book. I loved how so much thought was was put into the background art (modeled after the Green Gables House), character design, and story adaptation. I loved the behind the scenes at the end in which the story adaptor explains which parts of the story and characters that she chose to focus on and why. This was one of the few mangas that has ever made me cry (if you’re an Anne of Green Gables fan you know why)! Highly recommend even if you’ve never read the original story!

I've somehow made it 40 something years on this planet without reading or seeing anything about Anne of Green Gables. My loss, because its a charming story of optimism, imagination, and intelligence. The manga adaptation was nice; had the Manga Classics dramatic and sort of bland house style, but the strength was in the emotional expression and the natural beauty of the settings. A very impressive thing about these adaptations is that they don't seem to cut much at all; this story was more than 300 pages! A good adaptation and it has inspired me to go read the original.

I love Anne of green gables. Both the book and series. So i.get a little bit suspicious when i see it AS a manga. But this manga kept true to the book. And i would recommend the book to all Anne of green gables fans. Thank you to netgalley for letting me read this e arc

Stunningly beautiful, well illustrated, and a beautiful and closely faithful retelling of one of my hearts nearest and dearest series and for a lot of youth and non readers I could completely see this being a delightful way for them to hopefully finally experience this wonderful series while also getting in some ways a bit more in having it being so emotive and well drawn giving the expressions that run along the emotions our avonlea residence share with us as we peak into their lives. My biggest drawbacks is I felt Gilbert and especially Mathew were not drawn in my mental idea and spirit but Anne was near perfect with her enlarged and overly expressive eyes it made the larger than life girl actually seem to fit inside of all her energy and emotion. I’ve definitely found a fun little side series in these manga classics and I can’t wait to see what other tales they’ve covered thus far and even to come. 4.25/5

I was initially hesitant to request [and then read] this for a couple of reasons; I am still pretty confused about the Manga world [I am an old white woman who never read comics or anything like that and am just now getting into graphic novels and the such], and as I love Anne of Green Gables, I was afraid that it was a rip off of that beloved world. I was so happy to find that the Ms. Chan had contacted the heirs of L.M. Montgomery and received their blessing and decided then that this would probably be really good and close to the original text. The confusion about Manga and how to read it [I had to finally make a note to remind me to start from the right and read left] still applies, BUT!!!! it didn't change how much I enjoyed this new way to read a beloved book. While not the complete text, Ms. Chan kept the heart of the book and I found it to be a delightful way to revisit old friends.
The illustrations were amazing - I never felt that anyone [with NO disrespect to Colleen Dewhurst, who played Marilla in the original movies and whom I loved every second she was on the screen] quite got Marilla correct; she is described in the book as tall and spare and this illustrator got her absolutely correct, in my opinion. Her imagining of Anne and Diana were also delightful and really made the book fun to read. The only one I felt wasn't exactly right was Matthew, but I am overly partial to Matthew and so I am not sure anyone would get what my head tells me he looks like! ;-)
A wonderful read and addition to the Anne of Green Gables world; I highly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of that world. I know I will be buying this for my young niece who LOVES Manga, to introduce her to the world of Anne of Green Gables [and then I will give her the book and let her fill in the blanks]. In this classic story, Anne is an orphan who comes to live with Marilla and Matthew. She has an overactive imagination and a talent for getting into mischief, but she is delighted with her new home at Green Gables.
Condensing such a complex and deep story into manga form works very well here, and the plot closely follows the original story. Even the dialogue is almost always exactly the same as the book.
I loved the artwork so much! Beautiful panels in every chapter that draw you into the story. The artwork brings a lot of emotion into the story, and firmly connects the reader to the characters. Seeing the expressions on character's faces as they experience joy, grief, fear, sadness, or relief, made me feel those things too as I was reading!
Every character is exactly like I always imagined while reading the original book. Anne is full of joy and playfulness. Her imagination shines through her eyes when she is caught up in a beautiful dream world of her own. Marilla is the perfect balance of stern and practical strictness, but with a soft heart of gold. I was enchanted with Diana and Gilbert and the whole gang!
What a delight to revisit this beloved classic in manga form!

A lovely adaptation of the famous story by L.M. Montgomery about Anne Shirley, an orphan girl with a wild imagination who is adopted by siblings Marilla and Matthew.
I read the original book a little after finishing elementary school and liked it. And I can safely say that I liked this manga as well.
Anne is a very likeable and romantic character, in the innocent, childish way of course, same as the rest of the characters in this.
I know the plot isn't particularly strong, but to me, this story isn't about the plot but about the changes the characters go through and their growth. And as mentioned above, the likeable characters kind of made up for the lack of the plot.
So yeah, I totally recommend this to you!
P.S. In this house we love and support Matthew Cuthbert. A true unproblematic fave 💙whose death made me cry, even though I knew it was coming .

Listen. I know there is a book out there, I know of at least two shows that are out there. But I have never seen or read anything about Anne of Green Gables. So this was my introduction.
I wasn't that into it at the beginning. Anne is one of those people that I just hate in real life, cause this girl keeps on talking and talking. But she really grew on me. I truly love her story. I love the different relationships she had.

أنا من كبار معجبي سلسلة مانجا الكلاسيكيات، لأنها بالنسبة لي بتبقى مدخل لطيف للروايات الكلاسيكية اللي ممكن أكون قلقانة من حجمها الكبير أو مجرد طريقة أني أتعرف بيها على عالم الرواية قبل الانغماس فيها.
قصة "آن" كنت عايزة أقراها من فترة لأنها على قائمة قراءاتي لمشروع كتب من حول العالم وكمان كنت مهتمة جدا بأني أشوف المسلسل ولكن بعد قراءة الرواية. دي قصة آن، البنت المتحدثة وصاحبة الخيال الواسع، اللي بتوصل جزيرة برينس إدوارد ومزرعة غرين غيبلز وبتستقبلها عيلتها الجديدة بخبر صادم ليهم كلهم، كانوا متوقعين ومنتظرين ولد عشان يساعدهم في المزرعة مش هي. وخلال الرواية بنشوف علاقتها بتتطور ازاي بأهلها والصداقات اللي بتكونها وخيالها الواسع وازاي الكل بيحبها بسبب عفويتها وتميزها. كنت بمانع أحيانا طريقة معاملة الكبار ليها ولكن كنت ببقى سعيدة بأنه بتدافع عن نفسها.
أسلوب الرسم جميل وطبعا واضح اختصار كبير لأحداث الرواية الأصلية عشان يكون طول المانجا معقول، فده محمسني أني أعرف تفاصيل حياة آن بشكل أكبر في الرواية وخصوصا أنها سلسلة طويلة بتتبع حياة آن وأطفالها. فأعتقد أن المانجا دي فيها أحداث أول كتاب فقط.

Anne of Green Gables was already on my tbr, and I've always wanted to read and watch the well-loved Netflix adaptation. It's the story of Anne, the talkative and imaginative orphan, who arrives to Green Gables in Prince Edward Island, to her new family only to discover they actually wanted - and were expecting - a boy to help with the farm, not her. We see her life from there, her relationship with her foster parents, the friendships she forms, and how she wins everybody over with her charm. I had some issues with how the adults treated her, but I always liked how she stood up to them.
The art style was sweet but I felt a lot of the events of Anne's life were rushed, also I don't know if this covers more than just The first book in Anne of Green Gables series. I'm excited to read the novel and watch the show, though.

I had some issues with how the adults treated her, but I always liked how she stood up to them.
The art style was sweet but I felt a lot of the events of Anne's life were rushed, also I don't know if this covers more than just The first book in Anne of Green Gables series. I'm excited to read the novel and watch the show, though.

I was a little hesitant if a manga could do justice to a beloved classic like Anne of Green Gables, one of my very favourite books, but was pleasantly surprised with just how enjoyable I found reading this comic! The dialogue stayed true to the novel, and the art style was able to express the broad range of emotions that Anne embodies.
If someone was brand new to Montgomery and the world of Avonlea, I would still obviously recommend they start with reading the original novel because Montgomery's descriptive writing is unparalleled. But for existing fans looking to have a new experience with the story and reread the book in a unique way, I think this is a wonderful option and was a fun and quick way to return to Green Gables.
