I loved the idea of The Compound Effect. It rings so true. The little decisions you make and habits you have amass into life-altering results as they're compounded over years.
BUT DARREN HARDY IS INSUFFERABLE. I have never been so annoyed, nor have I ever had the displeasure of having to read quite so many pages by one quite as egotistical and self-inflating. Not only this, but he sees himself as so superior to others. He had the audacity to recommend that you choose your friends by their bank accounts, he used the term "thunderous thighs," he praises himself for not reading newspapers (see my previous updates for Thomas Jefferson's thoughts on that subject - hint: it does not match Darren Hardy's ideas), his idea of success is ultra-rich, super-thin, inspirational to the point that strangers will thank him for sharing his advice (that was his stated goal at the end of the book).
The whole book, I'd have to write myself "reality checks" in the margins when Darren Hardy got just a bit too... Darren Hardy-ish. A reminder to myself that someone's worth is not determined by how many zeroes are in their bank account, the number on the scale, or impressive names they can drop in a book that was about 130 pages too long. I also continually reminded myself that the successes Darren Hardy was describing were success to Darren Hardy, not to me. I think one of the main flaws of this book (besides having such an unlikable author) was that the definition of success was too narrow. I do not want to be a CEO. I don't care if my thighs touch. I don't ever think about having abs of steel. I'd rather not own a mansion. This is how Darren Hardy defines success throughout the book. So, to me, the book felt so shallow. Success means very different things to different people, and it is a shame the book didn't provide more examples into different kinds of success (familial, artistic, happiness, service, etc).
My advice to anyone who is interested in this book: read the first chapter "The Compound Effect in Action." That gets you the main idea of the Compound Effect. The rest of the book primarily consists of mindless rambling and name dropping, with the occasional nugget of wisdom that came originally from one of those people that were name dropped. So. There's that.
Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, this book would have made an excellent article. It probably shouldn't have been stretched out to a book.

I am not a great believer in get rich quick schemes, lose weight in 7 days, love at first sight, etc and so does this book.
This book is very different from the nonsense that media fills your mind everyday.
The best thing about the book is that it teaches you to work hard. There is no such thing as an overnight success. You have to work hard considerably everyday to make the compound effect work in favour of you.
According to the Author, the Compound Effect is always at work. You can make it work for you or it will work against you. He gives the example of three friends. One friend tries to improve himself everyday. He spends some time with his wife, walks for half an hour everyday, cuts 125 calories less in his diet and reads motivational books everyday. The second friend does nothing and is a little bitter about life. The third friend rarely exercises, spends enormous amount of hours watching TV everyday, takes his wife for granted and has a cookie and beer everyday to enjoy life.
The result after 2 and a half years: The third friend is now obese, has got health problems and loses his job and wife. The second friend remains the same and now is more bitter than before. The first friend remains trim, has a happy relationship with his wife and gets a job promotion.
You can see the compound effect in action.
The Author gives lots of examples like the one above. The plane analogy, the pump analogy and the steam engine analogy.
It is the small things we do in life that makes the biggest of differences. You don't become obese overnight nor do you lose your wealth instantly. It is all a compound effect of bad decisions taken almost everyday over a considerable period of time.
Most importantly the Author has some very practical suggestions to implement good habits and get rid of bad ones. So if you want to lose weight, what many people do, is to buy an expensive gym membership, new gym clothes and shoes to exercise. They work out intensively for an hour a day for 7 days. Then they give up disappointed with the results. Instead the Author suggests that it is better to walk 10 minutes a day and slowly increase it till it becomes a habit like brushing your teeth. In this way you will have long lasting impact for your health.
The Compound effect is always in action be it finance, business, health, relationships or your spirituality.
It is also important to take things slowly. Work everyday and without burning out, you will have the compound effect giving you the biggest momentum in a few years time.
I am already implementing his advice in my life and feel that in taking things slowly, I am able to adopt healthier long lasting habits.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants success in life whether it is being healthy, relationship improvement or your wealth.

The compound effect is the principle of reaping huge rewards from a series of small, smart choices.
Small, smart choices + Consistency + Time = Radical difference
The only path to success is through a continuum of mundane, unsexy, unexciting and sometimes difficult daily disciplines compounded over time.
The compound effect is always at work in the background whether you notice it or not. If you make smart, small choices and develop good habits then over time you reap massive results, on the other hand, if you make unconscious and ineffective choices, the compound effect goes for a tailspin and leads to inefficacy.
This book offers some interesting insights, If you were given a choice between taking $3 million in cash this very instant and a single penny that doubles in value every day for 31 days, which would you choose?
In the above scenario, if you choose the 2nd option, you might not see any significant improvement in the first few weeks because the compound effect takes so much longer to see the payoff i.e., by day 31, you have more than three times than the 1st option has offered.
So, to put this effect in action, the author has provided an actionable framework to improve your choices and develop good habits. The remainder of the book is high on motivation, like stop listening to radio, quit news or TV and instead listen to instructional and inspirational audio during your free time or commute. The final chapter ends with few success stories.

"Small things done for a long period of time will yield great results." That's it! You don't need to read the book now.

Going to be honest, I'm pretty sure this book was written for me.
The Compound Effect is a motivational book about what he calls - wait for it - the Compound Effect. The concept is basically to say that smaller steps over a long period of time will have a greater, more beneficial and successful effect on your life than bigger steps in a shorter period of time (that most people will not stick to). I am the type of person that gets revved up to make a change, is all-in for about a month (tops), and then I "don't have enough time," or "I'm too tired," excuse, excuse, excuse.
This book gave me such a different way to view behavior modification as well as changing life-long bad habits (of which I certainly have my fair share). Reading it just before the start of the New Year gave me a lot to think about and I have put several of his suggested methods into effect already.
I would highly recommend this book to basically everyone. Whether you're looking to change a behavior, a habit, build a business or even think that things may just be fine as they are, it's a great (very quick!) read that will really have you reevaluating the way you look at your life and considering even the smallest changes that may end up making all the difference in the long run.

"Luck = Preparation (personal development) + Attitude (beliefs /mindset) + Opportunity (a good thing coming your way) + Action (seizing the opportunity)"
Anyone interested in understanding the compound effect and how it can change our life can read this book. The book is a self-help and personal development and can help in developing good habits and routines.
My 3 major takeaways from this book are:
1. The compound effect is the strategy of reaping huge rewards from small, seemingly insignificant actions.
2. You cannot improve something until you measure it.
3. Always take 100 per cent responsibility for everything that happens to you.
You might like to wander through a few artistic journals — they’re full of sparks and surprises.

3. Always take 100 per cent responsibility for everything that happens to you.
You might like to wander through a few artistic journals — they’re full of sparks and surprises.

Seriously, I read this book. The communication about this book, mostly a perception or a hype or 'Good' thoughts about it, has certainly culminated with a compound effect. Something that you don't realise when it happens; you realise such incidents or executions only after being finished.
The compound effect as a book has stuffed lavishing metaphors, sensational imagery and 3-3.5 kg of motivation and we are buying it. Yes, there is a chance that the book might turn on the goal-chasing dynamics in someone. However, you asked yourself once you finish reading the book, what new did you learn out of this?

My main takeaways:
1. Small smart choices completed consistently over time make a radical difference in one’s life.
2. Luck consists of 4 components: preparation, attitude, opportunity, and action.
3. Humans behave like automatons, rarely getting out of their comfort zones and making changes to their lives. Tracking habits gives an insight into the choices people unconsciously make every day.
4. Creating a healthy morning and evening routine helps start and finish the day strong.

The author starts by saying to trust him because he publishes a magazine about success and so has gone over thousands of real and bogus stories and will tell you only the real stuff. Then he goes right into highlighting Dr. Oz and his notoriously non-evidence-based medical advice. No thanks.

EDIT:
Given the one star for "complete bullshit level" that I mention in the review, and some good input in the comments (thanks Mick and Sasha), I'm bumping this one up to two stars. It did have a few things (mentioned in the review) that set it apart from other books that truly deserve one star, so in retrospect I was a bit harsh when I rated this one the first time. Beyond that, my review stands.
_ _ _ _ _
What to say...
Not sure where I got this one from, to be honest. Had it lying around, and decided it was a good book to practice a few new speed reading techniques on.
Took a look at this one on Amazon, and I guess I agree with a lot of the reviews there.
Basically, if you've never read a self-help book before, you'll find a few good pointers here. There's a foreword by Tony Robbins, and to be honest, that is the only thing that keeps this book on the honest side of things. Without that foreword, this looks like copy/paste of someone taking one or two notes while listening to Tony's Personal Power II.
- The Airplane metaphor (small shifts all the time)
- "My partner screwed me over, but I'm ok with it now
- Build momentum and things will happen
- Gratitude (ok, this is every single self-help product out there)
- Stay in good physical shape
- Goal setting (also every single self-help product)
...it's all here.
In addition there's a "as Jim Rohn used to say" sentence every ones in a while in every chapter, and references to SUCCESS Magazine on (it feels like) every other page.
Ending the book with "if this helped you in any way whatsoever, give five copies to your friends", was just a bit too much.
This is a one star. The star is for:
- Free templates at the end of the book, and references to free templates (for goal setting, gratitude, etc) and resources online.
- The law of attraction - this was actually well explained, for once. No it's not about sitting on your ass wishing for a new sofa. You will see sofas all over the place, because you've already primed your subconscious with thoughts about a new sofa (or camera, trip somewhere, whatever gadget tickles your fancy). The law of attraction isn't anything new, but at least this part is well worth the read for someone who's been fooled by something like The Secret.
As stated - if this self-help thing is new to you, give it a go if you happen to have it lying around. If you don't, there are better books out there. Everyone tries to be Tony Robbins or Stephen Covey, so why not start with them. They won't feed you a magic "you don't have to do anything but wish for shiny stuff" pill. You'll have to do the work, but they're well worth a read. I love Awaken The Giant Within and Personal Power II (TR). Seven Habits by SC is also hard to beat.
Usually a one star means this is complete bullshit, but I'll give this one a genuine one star for the points mentioned above. Still, I have read way better books. Read Tony Robbins and Steven Covey for topics similar to this one (superior), and read everything from Tim Ferriss for a very concrete angle on how to make innovative changes to your life. Very few people, in my opinion, are better than Tim Ferriss on self improvement.
Hope this helps.

Im not mostly intrested of these types of books but this one is a MUST, thanks to my friend that push me to read this. There are lots of things we are doing unintentionally and made lots of problem, we are hanging out with the ppl they dont worth spending time for [in this book called them three minutes ppl], we dont know the exact way of saving money, we are not aware how our thoughs can control us.. Reading this book will lead you to do what you have to.
•
•• The note below taken from book:
If you tolerate disrespect, you will be disrespected. If you tolerate people being late and making you wait, people will show up late for you. If you tolerate being underpaid and overworked, that will continue for you. If you tolerate your body being overweight, tired, and perpetually sick, it will be.
It’s amazing how life will organize around the standards you set for yourself. Some people think they’re the victims of other people’s behavior, but in actuality, we have control over how people treat us. Protect your emotional, mental, and physical space so you can live with peace, rather than in the chaos and stress the world will hurl upon you.

Here's the thing....
If I were only concerned with success and not at all concerned about being a decent human, I could probably agree with a lot of this book.
As it is, there are a few helpful hints and good catch phrases, but mostly this book is asking people to be self-absorbed, inhuman sharks. Hardy also ends with a blatant push for you to gift the book to your friends. Friends that should no longer speak to you if you aren't the picture of health, wealth, and success.
I hope that Hardy is hiding his true nature from his readers. I hope that he has friends that he loves, not for what they can give him, but for who they are as people. I hope that Hardy is genuinely interested in not only what the world can provide him, but also with the small cracks of the world that need love but aren't worthy of Oprah's attention.
More than anything, The Compound Effect left me utterly sad to believe that so many would place personal gain over being kind and loving. Money won't cry at your funeral. Clients won't visit you in the hospital. Tombstones aren't marked with your social media ranking.
Small things add up to big things, and that includes being a good and decent human being.

The Compund Effect!
Remember that old story about the rabbit and the turtle?
Then, it's the same motto to learn throughout the chapters of this book. In a simple illustration, this can be summarized as follows:
In short. The right book at the right time! An exciting book for an exciting boost. What made it more motivating and boosting is that I listened to it as an audio book by the author himself! Well, not to mention that was while I was jogging and doing some household work. Anyway that doesn't change the fact that it really did pretty good job for me. Not to mention the free resources available at the official website for further aid.
Awaiting eagerly to sending you my success story, Darren!

There were parts of this book I liked, but other parts that I found to be complete B.S. It's meant to be motivational and on some levels it is but certain things the author suggests, I just don't believe to be feasible or realistic, at least of for me. For instance, he suggests not reading newspapers or watching the news but instead only having RSS feeds set up to filter any news relevant to your personal or professional goals. I think this would lead to a very narrow minded view of the world. However, the authors suggestions on how to kick bad habits and build momentum to create good habits were great.

Reading these has become my equivalent of self-flagellation.
It's been a really weird year. The careful schedule I thought I was creating for myself in 2016 got interrupted with . . . shitty life stuff. I took refuge in reading books on productivity and writing because I have never felt more unproductive and unanchored. I can see the glow of dawn, now. Three more months and I should be able to be settled. And the gods know, I can do so much more with my time than read a book like The Compound Effect.

If capitalist, fat-shaming, grind culture were a religion, Darren Hardy would likely be one of its minor prophets. And I don't mean that as a compliment.
This book was relatively short, but altogether much too long. (If it were written today, I'd think this book had started as one of those dreadful LinkedIn influencer posts whose author got carried away and ended up composing over 100 pages of repetitive pablum.) It certainly has some good principles at its core (hence the second star), but it's a self-aggrandizing ego-trip, couched in evidence that is heavy on the hypothetical but light on, well, evidence. He doesn't even go in for pseudo-psychology, preferring the mystical over the empirical, all in service of driving home this conclusion: If you're not rich, trim, and absolutely beaming with joy every second of every day, it's your own fault and you need to work harder.
Granted, I'm one of the hoi polloi who is content without fabulous riches, who enjoys the occasional episode of TV, who stops for fast food every now and again, and who sometimes listens to music on my commute rather than "self-help audios." In other words, I'm a heretic. So feel free to take my opinion with a grain of contentedly under-achieving salt.

This book provides you time-proven strategies to increase your productivity and effectiveness. The compound effect refers to little small but lasting productive changes that yield enormous results in the long run.
It makes a perfect combination if read after the One Thing book written by Gary Keller.
I acquired a couple of techniques from the book the profoundly affected my productivity. In addition, in final chapters, it gives a perfect mindset which strengthens the compound effect of your deeds by n-fold.
I highly recommend this book to those productivity and success seeking ones.

An unexpected treat: Hardy writes about how he made a daily ledger of his wife's attributes - the styling of her hair, how she made the bed ... whatever touched him that day - and did so devotedly for a full year. He then gifted the journal to his wife on Thanksgiving, who cried upon receiving it. The diary taught him persistence, discipline, and overall forced him to look at his wife with new eyes each day and fall more deeply in love with her.
For this reason and many, many more, The Compound Effect is one fantastic read. Highly pragmatic, hands-on, and an absolute must for your library on personal excellence achievement.
