Former military medic Darya McLeighan has settled in as the local village healer, keeping her magic hidden from everyone to avoid re-conscription. With no end in sight to the war, the supplies needed to maintain the health of her local community are scarce and she has to risk exposure to save those she cares about. The problem is, since leaving service, her magic is also in short supply.
On leaving the Emperor's army, General Nate Kirin has turned saddle-back merchant, to help keep the family business running. While seeking out Ms. McLeighan's healing help for his ailing aunt, the two nearly collide when a young boy calls her away to aide in his mother's complicated birthing.
While on route to the labouring woman, enemy rovers cross into local territory, waylaying Darya's efforts to reach her patient. Weaponless, Nate rushes to Ms. McLeighan's rescue, wherein he finds himself in a situation where everyone needs a little help... and a little healing.

HEALER was a quick fantasy novella featuring a retired military General and a magical healer who has left the warfront and that's about the extent of the worldbuilding. There isn't much to indicate who the Kindred are fighting or why they're fighting but I did like the sweet relationship between Nate and Darya. While this didn't blow me away, I am still interested in reading book 1 because I liked the MCs and the care they showed each other. This was a fast and easy read with no spice, just a few kisses.
A magical romantasy short story with a well-written setting and a sweet second chance romance.
I couldn't help but feel the romance itself would have been more fulfilling to actually "see" happen, even if it were via flashbacks, as important past events between the two characters and their feelings towards each other are told rather than shown. It was still an enjoyable slice of fantasy fiction though, what with the deft world building that gave away just as much as we needed to know without feeling shallow or overwhelming. The dual POVs meant you were never left out of the loop... Though I did wonder how distracted Daryn must have been by her medic duties not to recognise her military colleagues! The story itself, that of the healer needing to help her patients while protecting her secrets, not to mention going through self-discovery with an old acquaintance, was well done and sweet to follow with writing that drew a wonderful soft-focused picture. While romance like this isn't exactly my thing, I really liked the world and characters created.

A quick read. It was interesting; having already read the next book in series to go back in time and see how Nate and Darya had met and connected. I am enjoying this series and look forward to more.
