Rate this book
April 1861, New York City. Civil War has just broken out. Kate Warne, first female detective and a Pinkerton, returns to find that her beloved sister, Saskia, has gone missing. Where to turn? Who to suspect?

Danger surrounds Kate. Secessionists' fury has followed her since she thwarted their recent attempt to assassinate Lincoln in Baltimore. New York City is also a powder keg, with most elites and even the city's mayor violently pro-South. Or could Kate's possibly pro-South relatives have anything to do with Saskie's disappearance?

Buck Hackett, a handsome fellow Pinkerton, teams up to help but also yearns for Kate. She resists loving him, fearing more heartache after the loss of her husband. Instead, she and her frequent partner Hattie Lawton – whose family Pinkerton helped escape to Canada via the Underground Railroad – plunge headlong into the dangers of 1861 NYC: from the theater scene to scenes of squalor and vast wealth – then through the raging opium epidemic and the secret tunnels of Chinatown. To find her sister, Kate braves every danger, knowing that every second counts.

Historical fiction based on real people and events. This was quite a departure for the author who usually writes psychological and crime thrillers, many of which I have enjoyed. It’s also a departure for me, although I do read some historical fiction. But when I realised this was based on real events I was inspired to read it.

Kate Warne was the first female Pinkerton detective. Allan Pinkerton’s Union Intelligence Service was the forerunner of the US Secret Service. The book is set just prior the the Civil War. Pinkerton was an ardent abolitionist and had helped a number of people onto the Underground Railroad into Canada.

Not all the Northern states were in favour of abolition. There was fierce resistance from New York. In 1861 Pinkerton became aware of a plot to assassinate President elect Lincoln and Kate, in disguise, pushing a bundled up “invalid” Lincoln in a wheelchair and slouch hat whisked him onto a special train at Baltimore from right under the noses of the would be assassins. It’s all very interesting but most of Pinkerton’s files were destroyed in a fire but some letters between him and Kate were spared and, presumably, form the basis of this story.

After saving Lincoln Kate returns to New York where her family has a house and Pinkerton has set up a secret office as things in New York are getting very volatile. But shortly after her arrival her sister, Saskie who is an actress, does not return home from the theatre after a performance. Kate is understandably concerned. Pinkerton makes his resources available for the search for Saskie and sends reinforcements.

It seems that Saskie was in the grip of a laudanum addiction which led the search to Chinatown. In these days of the “war on drugs” it is amazing how readily available laudanum and opium and even cocaine were. It was all legal despite the knowledge it was addictive. Even crying babies were soothed with laudanum which, of course, would be unthinkable now.

This was a bit of a slow burn at the start but it is a very character driven story and you come to admire Kate in her resolve to find her sister. The supporting characters were all equally likeable and dedicated to finding Saskie and the cause of abolition and rooting out traitors and double agents and such like. The pace does build throughout and you sense that time is slipping away for finding Saskie alive. The ending is a bit of a shocker as Kate learns of the depth of betrayal by some people she should have been able to trust. I really enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it. Many thanks to BookSirens and J.A. Schneider for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

It was April 1861 and Kate Warne, first female detective at Pinkerton's, had just returned home to New York City to discover her beloved sister, Saskia, was missing. Saskie was an actress, bubbly and full of energy and vigour, but she'd recently become addicted to the latest "cure all" around, laudanum, an alcoholic solution containing morphine, prepared from opium and used as a narcotic painkiller. It was at epidemic proportions - even the doctors and pharmacists were addicted. But Kate, along with fellow detectives, Hattie, Tim and Buck, were determined to find Saskie...

Kate's brother Tom and his wife Liza, were living in the family home, recently returned from away, and both Kate and Saskie couldn't stand Liza - they didn't much like Tom either. He was weak and shallow - Kate wondered if Tom had had anything to do with Saskie's disappearance. But soon, Chinatown beckoned. The squalor of the poor, the opium epidemic and the crime lords who thought nothing of forcing young girls into prostitution made Kate shudder. With Civil War threatening, would Kate and her friends find Saskie - and would she be alive?

Kate Warne's Sister is Missing is the latest offering from J.A. Schneider, and her first Historical thriller. It was brilliant! I would LOVE to see this one as the start of a series - Detective Kate Warne series - perfect! The story is based on the true story of Kate. From wiki "Kate Warne was an American law enforcement officer known as the first female detective, in 1856, in the Pinkerton Detective Agency and the United States."

I thoroughly enjoyed the fast paced and gritty thriller with its excellent characters - even the bad ones were well-crafted ;) Highly recommended.

With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

J. A. Schneider always writes amazing books that depict amazing female characters. Usually in psychological thrillers, or police procedural. This time she has written a must-read novel that takes you back to the American Civil war and tells the story of Kate Warne. Kate was a civil war spy, and the Pinkerton’s first female detective in a world, where women had few rights and had limited opportunities.

I must admit I learnt one hell of a lot from this book about the Pinkerton agency. I never knew that it was the forerunner to the secret service and that the agency, Kate in particular was involved in stopping an assignation attempt on Abraham Lincoln, before he became President. The authors note that precedes this amazing book is a must read on its own. But don’t stop there, dive in and immerse yourself in the American civil war era New York, with its familiar locations, like Chinatown, the Bowery and Wall Street. It is obvious that Ms Schneider has undertaken a huge amount of research and taken a lot of time to create scenes that you actually feel part of you can almost smell the scents of the era.

As always in her books the story contains a whodunnit, and it was fascinating to read the chapters from the perpetrators point of view. Giving an insight to the mind of a psychopath. It is quite interesting to read the thought processes and deductions, made without the aid of computers and even land lines would have been rare, let alone mobiles. As they search for her missing sister and work out the red herrings. Most of the communication seems to have been done either by letter, which were obliviously more efficient than now or my telegrams.

I received an ARC of this from the author in exchange for an honest review. Lets hope there may be a second instalment, featuring Kate Warne

Kate Warne’s Sister Is Missing by J A Schneider was a big departure from the other novels of hers that I have read. At first it threw me off. The writing felt dry, textbooklike. BUT, the more I read, the more I got lost in the characters and their circumstances.

Kate Warne’s Sister Is Missing is historical fiction at its finest. We have fiction woven into facts seamlessly. The events take place during 1861. Think of your history. the Civil War had just broken out. There were those who wanted Lincoln dead. Kate Warne did her part to try and save him, but we all know, eventually, he was killed.

Kate Warne was the first female detective with the Pinkertons, thanks to Alan Pinkerton’s ability to judge a person’s character and see that she would be able to go places and learn things because people would overlook a woman. No one would suspect her of being a detective.

Kate and Saskia’s brother and sister in law are quite the pieces of work. When Saskia goes missing, my eyes are on them. Kate, Saskia and their brother shared ownership of the home they lived in.

Opium, in the form of laudanum was the be all, cure all. History repeats itself in drug addiction and abuse of dangerous substances.

Kate’s friends, Buck and Hattie, are also her partners. Will there be a love interest for Kate? The Flower Girl, a girl with a heart so big she put her life on the line for another. She may not be a star in the book, put she shone brightly regardless. I love when peripheral characters take center stage. That is some good character development that makes me want more.

I would have loved to get to know Saskia better. She was sweet, innocent, adventurous, artistic…Will she be found in time? Is it already too late?

The descriptive writing brought to life the horror, the smells, the danger…my anger and disgust, my wonder and delight, my curiosity and desire to know more. The characters grew on me the more time I spent with them. The mystery kept me guessing and the villains, because there are plenty to go around, filled me with revulsion. What a great word, revulsion. Just saying it conveys how poorly I felt about them, especially a certain someone, who, at this time, will be left nameless.

I appreciate a book that has me going on a hunt, surfing the web, searching for more answers on my own. I love that we ended on a high note, with love and inspiration.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Kate Warne’s Sister Is Missing by J A Schneider.

Strong women have always existed despite the assumption of many that strong women emerged in the 1960s burning their bras in support of the feminist movement. There are examples throughout history that strong women left their stamp on events that have shaped our modern world.

Kate Warne, the first female Pinkerton Detective, was a Civil War spy. She worked for Allan Pinkerton’s Union Intelligence Service, the forerunner of the U.S. Secret Service and hatched a needed plan to thwart would be assassins' efforts, in Baltimore, to kill Abraham Lincoln before he was inaugurated. Be sure to read the Author's Note preceding the historical novel.

J. A. Schneider writes books for adrenaline junkies… to say she writes page-turners is an understatement. KATE WARNE'S SISTER IS MISSING is no exception. It takes place in New York City, in 1861. NYC is pro-South with a mayor who is in favor of the city seceding from the Union.

In the new, secret Pinkerton office, on Wall Street, Kate is joined by her associates, Hattie Lawton and Buck Hackett, both Pinkerton detectives, and Allan Pinkerton himself, in the frantic effort to find Kate's sister Saskia. The search takes them to locations familiar to anyone who has ever lived in New York… Wall Street, Chinatown, and the Bowery to name a few.

Schneider adds to the usual whodunit with chapters devoted to the thoughts of the perpetrator of whatever plot is afoot. She has done this throughout her writings, and it is something that never fails to set the heart pumping. These chapters provide a chilling look into the psychopathic mind. Her insights are remarkable.

These past several years have piqued my interest in American history. The underlying history presented in KATE WARNE'S SISTER IS MISSING is verifiable and shows that violence and intrigue are nothing new. As William Shakespeare wrote in "The Tempest," "past is prologue" certainly applies here.

Do I recommend KATE WARNE'S SISTER IS MISSING? Absolutely!

Kate born is a Pinkerton agent in the 1800s and when her sister goes missing all the disguises in the Victorian era isn’t going to get her any closer to figuring out the culprit at least not until she starts looking closer to home. Saski was an actress And with her friends and Kate’s enemies it could be anyone, but who?Kate‘s enemies it could be anyone, but who? Butch is her infatuated partner and Hattie is another other female Pinkerton agent and with their help she will get to the bottom of this. This was such a great book I love historical fiction and this was not only funny witty in any other positive affirmation you can say about a book I would say it about Kate Bournes sister is missing this is truly historical fiction at its best it’s a book you want to read in one setting. I loved it and highly recommend it. I received this book from Book Sirens and I’m leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes I am blind and dictate my review but all opinions are definitely my own.

I've never read a historical thriller before but thoroughly enjoyed this book! For too long, the story of important women in history have been ignored. In this novel, Kate Warne's life is dramatized. A notable spy and detective, Kate Warne may have even changed the course of history with her clever plan to save Lincoln from an earlier assassination plot.

The novel revolves around Kate's attempt to find and save her missing sister Saskie. It has a bit of romance, and intrigue while providing a fascinating glimpse into the state of New York citizens just prior to the Civil War. (It's so different from what I imagined.)

There is family drama, the portrayal of a strong female friendship with fellow detective Hattie, and plenty of red herrings to distract from the real reason behind Saskie's disappearance.

I highly recommend this if you enjoy fast-paced, suspenseful novels with a host of complex characters!

I have read several of J.A. Schneider's novels, but this one is unique. It is both entertaining and informative about a period in our country’s history I know little about. The backdrop of this book is the time frame surrounding the start of the Civil War in New York. It is also a fascinating glimpse of the first female detective in the Pinkerton Detective Agency, and the first female detective in the United States.

The author has crafted an intriguing narrative utilizing the character of this little-known historically important woman. The story revolves around Kate Warne searching for her missing sister Saskie, whose life she fears is in danger.

The trap most authors of historical fiction fall victim to is including too many details of real facts in the story. Ms. Schneider does not succumb to this temptation. She includes just enough to give the reader a sense of actually being there without resorting to a data dump. The book is fast-paced and difficult to put down once you start reading. I highly recommend this book to both lovers of Civil War narratives and those who like a good mystery/thriller.

There was a lot of historical information I wasn't aware of or not in the detail provided by this book. Our history is not always pretty when it comes to medications and addiction.

I most enjoyed reading about Pinkerton’s first female detective in 1861. A strong woman, a master of disguises, doesn't take no for an answer.

A thrilling story. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

To write a book of fiction using real historic characters is a challenge many authors would shy away from. Not so J.A. Schneider! Her latest novel, ‘Kate Warne’s Sister is Missing’, tells a tale about the titular protagonist who was the first ever female Pinkerton detective. Back in 1856 she convinced Allan Pinkerton to take her on as she felt women could obtain secrets from places impossible for male detectives. She was twenty-three at the time. She also played a major role in defeating an assassination attempt against newly-elected President Abraham Lincoln in February 1861. The novel relates real events that took place in New York a couple of months later in that same year.

The trap for a fictionalized tale of real events, one which many authors have fallen into, is to use too many real details about the related episode, and where and when it took place, which often straightjackets a novel into a semi-documentary, full of information dumps. To make the book a thriller, pace and tension are needed, and including large tracts of factual documentation will play havoc with this aim. Fortunately, author Schneider is no newcomer to the thriller genre, although this is her first historical thriller. Her writing skills are brought to bear on this amazing tale, turning it into a fast-paced story that uses the actual facts to insert the reader convincingly into the antebellum atmosphere in New York just days before the American Civil War started. The characters who populate this tale, real or invented, are all incredibly fleshed out and believable. The author makes you feel their reactions to incidents that affect them personally and historically. Schneider does an awe-inspiring job of conveying the sights, the sounds, the smells of this crucial moment, giving the reader a front row seat in claustrophobic Chinatown opium dens, the rioting in the cobbled streets of the metropolis, the devious designs of those attempting to make their fortunes from the upcoming war.

You do not have to be a history buff, or Civil War enthusiast to enjoy this wonderfully human tale of this fundamental instant in bygone America, or the extraordinary woman that was Kate Warne. An outstanding novel from one of my favorite authors, one which I highly recommend to all.

Kate Warne’s Sister is Missing by J A Schneider - A Fabulous Historical Thriller Worthy of Five Shiny Stars

J A Schneider has taken a break from writing modern day suspense thrillers and delved into historical fiction with Kate Warne’s Sister is Missing. Although this book is fictional some of the characters are not do have their own place in US history.

In 1861 Kate Warne persuaded Allan Pinkerton of the Pinkerton Detective Agency to employ her as the first female detective. She worked many cases and also played a part in preventing the secessionists assassinate Abraham Lincoln (The Baltimore Plot).

The book is set in 1861 at the outbreak of the US Civil War. Kate return’s home to New York City to find her sister, Saskia, is missing. Kate is still grieving a loss and tries to suppress her feelings towards her colleague Buck Hackett and teams up with Hattie Lawton, also a Pinkerton Detective, in order to find Saskia.

Kate and Hattie investigate and are led into the seedy world of an opium epidemic. Their enquiries lead them into Chinatown where opium dens and druggists are plentiful.
Kate, Saskia, her brother, Tom, and his wife share a home. Her brother and sister-in-law, Liza, are pro-South people and Kate soon wonders if her brother had anything to do with the disappearance of their sibling. Tom and Liza are guilty of something, but what?

J A Schneider has clearly spent a considerable amount of time researching what life was like in New York City 1861 and at the onset of war. The description used in the book of the city, the people, how they spoke and what they wore etc gives the reader a real appreciation of that period of time in history.

As expected, this thriller was packed with suspense and intrigue. There are plenty of clues and suspects to keep you enthralled throughout. A full on, fast paced page-turner.
Historical thrillers are not usual go to reads but this is a J A Schneider so of course I was going to read it. I was not disappointed.

I was given an advanced readers copy of this book by J A Schneider. I am more than happy to leave my honest review of Kate Warne’s Sister is Missing.

Ok. So I’ve read all of these reviews for “Kate Warne’s Sister is Missing” and realized - I’m a really simple person and not nearly as smart as I thought (hoped) I was LOL

Admittedly, I’m not as well-versed on my American History as I should be (I prefer Greek mythology or European history) but man, was I schooled after this book! But in a really good way. I’m still not in any position to explain or dive into all of the history that surrounds this amazing book.

What I WILL talk about is the heart of this book, and that is the tremendous depths a woman will go to find her missing sister. Like the Disney movie “Frozen”, this is a different kind of love story, one where the love between sisters - with the occasional man thrown in - is what’s important.

Kate Warne was the first female detective in history, in 1856, in the Pinkerton Detective Agency. She used disguises and would change her name and could blend in anywhere. And yes, she was a real-life person who saved Abraham Lincoln’s life. Her determination coupled with her wily ways made her a force to be reckoned with. Her sister is missing and so Kate and a motley crew of friends and co-workers set out to solve the mystery of where is Saskie, the missing sis.

Set in New York in the mid 1800’s, Schneider’s description of the time period is nothing short of brilliant. Ladies wearing cheongsams, men in top hats, the smell of cheroot, tintypes, horses clopping down the cobbled streets dragging carriages with oil-lit lanterns, an occasional dead body, to-the-throat dresses with multi-layered skirts, whiskey, laudanum, opium, telegrams. Schneider places you smack in the middle of it. And through it all, you are drawn like a flea to a tomb-imprisoned crook into Kate’s desperate, dangerous, surprising search for the missing Saskie.

Will she be found alive? Dead? The book is a slow burn but is developed so well that when the twist and reveal come, you’ll love you took the journey.

Thank you J.A. Schneider for the ARC! And for the beautiful history lesson. I was honored to be one of the first to read your amazing labor of love and I cannot wait for the rest of the world to read it!

Congratulations!

I read all J.A. Schneider’s psychological thrillers, and am enthralled by her leap into this Civil War era historical thriller, inspired by a deep fascination with the first female Pinkerton detective, Kate Warne. who was a master of disguise.

I enjoyed immersing in 1861 New York and the Civil War era, for example consider the vivid detail of drawing a bath: “we lug the two sloshing pots out, past the dark parlor, through the shadows-jumping hall, and up the darkened stairs. .. We reach the bathroom, splash the water into the coffin-like tub, then move away in the shadows; start to head back for more.”

With the exception of a chapter here or there told by the mysterious culprit, the story is relayed in Kate’s endearing voice, which makes me care deeply for her at each twist and turn. Her beloved sister, Saskie, is missing, and Kate wonders, “Is Saskie’s disappearance random, personal or political?” We enter scenes of the raging opium epidemic and visit the back tunnels of Chinatown. The last watercolor Saskie painted—a painting of a young Chinese woman with a flower in her hair—serves as an important clue. The cast includes Buck Hackett, a fellow Pinkerton detective who is in love with her, and her partner, Hattie Lawton. They add depth and intrigue to the main character.

Highly recommended. Five stars.

A fantastic historical read !

Kate Warne’s Sister is Missing is one of the best historical thrillers I have ever read. Author J.A. Schneider has the most unique style of writing that instantly captures the reader’s interest with a fabulous setting, a powerful plot, and fascinating characters.

I would urge anyone choosing this novel NOT to miss reading the author’s note at the beginning. It holds extremely valuable information regarding the history of Kate Warne and her legacy as the first woman Pinkerton detective. Also in the author’s note, Schneider states that “New York City is a powder keg” and she aptly describes what is happening politically with a mayor who is pro-South and seeking to secede from the Union.

Using a very descriptive and distinct writing style, Schneider captures the essence of New York City at the beginning of the Civil War in 1861. All walks of life are depicted from the upper class societal snobs to the horrors of the opium dens and their addicts. It was interesting to note that opium, laudanum, and cocaine were not only legal but used by all classes of people. This included doctors and even mothers used it to calm and quiet their crying babies!

The plot of this intriguing story was constantly ebbing and flowing, twisting and turning keeping the reader on the edge throughout the whole novel. Schneider threw in a few red herrings, leading the reader to think they have an idea of the killer’s identity on one page only to discover that it might be another character on the next page.

The characters surrounding Kate are exceptionally well developed and they are particularly loyal to her. Schneider’s interesting writing technique of giving the killer’s point of view was quite clever. Only the reader knows the killer’s plan as they stalk Kate and make attempts on her life.

This novel was my first introduction to J.A. Schneider and I certainly look forward to reading more of her works. I give this novel a 5 out of 5 star rating and I received an advanced reader copy from BookSirens and am leaving an honest and voluntary review.

Kate Warne’s Sister Is Missing
J. A. Schneider

The year is 1861 and Kate Warne has returned home to NYC to discover that her sister, Saskia is missing. Her detective skills are about to be put to the test.
Kate is the first detective working for the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Without spoilers…you will read about drugs… especially the opium epidemic, crime lords, prostitution and so much more. All of this on the heels of a possible Civil war.
This is historical fiction based on real lives and events. The author nailed her researching skills.
Strong female characters are the authors forte.
I was never into historical fiction until now!!! It was unputdownable. Gripping…breathtaking…and brilliant.
I love her writing style and would love to see a sequel in the future.
Joyce, I’m still your #1 fan. Thank you for an ARC in digital format.

I have been reading works written by J.A. Schneider for many years. When she contacted me that her newest book was about to be released, she told me a little about it. I will admit that I was hesitant at first because the time period that it was written in is not one that I normally gravitate towards. However, my love of her work led me to devour this book. I loved the characters, especially Kate, but her team as well.

You can tell that there was an immense amount of research that went into creating this story and I was sucked right in. I can’t wait to see what happens next to Kate Warne.

FIVE STARS for KATE WARNE'S SISTER IS MISSING

WOW WOW WOW!! I finished Kate Warne’s Sister is Missing, then started immediately to RE-READ it!! Talk about “You are there” thrillers, it blew my mind, such a fast rollercoaster that I wanted to go back for the amazing details, the ingenious plot, and the fabulous characters.

Kate Warne was the first female detective and a pro-Union Pinkerton in New York City when IT WAS PRO-SOUTH! Who knew? With even the mayor hating Lincoln and demanding the city to secede! Alan Pinkerton has established a secret office on Wall Street, right under the nose of the Union-hating elite.

Kate’s enemies are all around…and her actress sister Saskie has gone missing. Kate and Saskie have always been very close since childhood, which adds another layer of humanity … and urgency … to Kate’s frantic search.

It’s been forever since a book had my heart racing. But most amazing is the daredevil courage of Kate Warne, who’s been too lost to history. Such a gift this book is, to bring her to light!!! Don’t miss this fabulous read!!!

One more thing... don't forget to read J.A. Schneider's AUTHOR'S NOTE at the beginning of the book - it's both fascinating and informative!

"Kate Warne's Sister Is Missing" by J.A. Schneider

My Assessment:

'Kates Warne's Sister Is Missing' was quite a riveting historical thriller that happened in NYC in 1861 as the Civil War was starting. This first Pinkerton detective Kate Warne upon returning home, finds her sister Saskia could not be found who was an artist and gardener. Was this because of Kate being involved with the stopping of Lincoln's assassination, or did it have something to do with her relatives being involved in all of this mess because both Kate's brother Tom and sister-in-law were quite something...I will stop here and say...pick up this good read.

The story will be a long read but needed due to what was happening in Kate's life. Kate had lost her husband Ned through death, and now her sister was missing. One person who worked for the Pinkerton detectives had feelings for Kate, but she wasn't interested then; still, he was there trying to help Kate with her situation with her missing sister. Kate's partner Hattie Lawton was with her and other secondary characters trying to find her sister.

Be ready with many twists and turns and see after all that was said and down just who was involved with Kate's sister Saskia's disappearance. April 1861, New York City. Civil War has just broken out. Kate Warne, first female detective and a Pinkerton, returns to find that her beloved sister, Saskia, has gone missing. Where to turn? Who to suspect?
Danger surrounds Kate. Secessionists’ fury has followed her since she thwarted their recent attempt to assassinate Lincoln in Baltimore. New York City is also a powder keg, with most elites and even the city’s mayor violently pro-South. Or could Kate’s possibly pro-South relatives have anything to do with Saskie’s disappearance?
Buck Hackett, a fellow Pinkerton, teams up to help but also yearns for Kate. She resists loving him, fearing more heartache after the loss of her husband. Instead, she and her frequent partner Hattie Lawton - whose family Pinkerton helped escape to Canada via the Underground Railroad - plunge headlong into the dangers of 1861 NYC: from the theater scene to scenes of squalor and vast wealth - then through the raging opium epidemic and the secret tunnels of Chinatown. To find her sister Kate braves every danger, knowing that every second counts.

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

Kate Warne, female Pinkerton Detective, returns to New York City to discover that her beloved sister, Saskia, is missing. Civil War has started, assassination attempts have been made against the President, and Kate herself is at risk should she be discovered as a Northern spy. Kate knows that time is of the essence in finding Saskia alive. Her brother Tom and his horrible wife, Liza, are more concerned with appearances than Saskia’s whereabouts. Fellow Pinkerton detectives Buck Hackett, who has feelings for Kate, and Hattie Lawton, with her own complicated love story, lend every assistance through this fast paced journey.

Join Kate and friends as their investigation takes them through the lives of the wealthy, to the theater district where Saskia shines, to the poorest and most derelict parts of the city, including the Chinese opium dens lying deep beneath the streets. The frantic search for Saskia is on and nothing can be left to chance.

I struggled to put this book down, having been immediately drawn in. I found myself running scenarios through my mind when I didn’t have the book in hand. The characters are very well written and stay with you. The plot is rich with excitement. I am a huge fan of J.A. Schneider and her ability to keep you on edge without giving the plot away. This book was no exception. Whether you enjoy historical stories or not, you will thoroughly enjoy this ride!

Kate Warne's Sister is Missing
Historical Thriller
J.A. Schneider, author

A powerful and poignant educational novel...

Ms. Schneider knocks it out of the park with this novel. She penned a beautifully written fictional literary story based on actual individuals and facts during the Pre-Civil War Era.

As she writes in her Author's Note, the story centers around Kate Warne, Hattie Lawton and Kate's sister. I highly recommend this section be read before tackling the book. You'll have a better understanding of what's to come.

The characters were complex, the plot twisting and intriguing. I especially was thrilled with the ingenious design of the plot. I can't say more without giving it away.

While investigating the disappearance of her sister, Saskie, there is also family discord and the possibility of a love match for Kate.

Excellent storytelling. I most highly recommend this novel to everyone. As a woman, it's good to know that a strong, fast thinking, and intelligent woman had part in the eventual development of the U.S. Secret Service.

I was asked to read an advanced reader copy of the book and I am most happy to leave this review. I do so voluntarily and with much gratitude in the author's faith in me.

Brilliant

I do love the way Joyce Schneider writes and what she writes so I was definitely up for reading this step away from the norm and I do love the way she answered my question about why before I knew I had the question ha ha.

So this is a step back into history to 1861 and the first woman detective and the one who thwarted an attempt to assassinate Lincoln now her sister has gone missing - can Kate find her before it is too late?

Fighting secrets, fraud and the murky world of drug addiction Kate is in a race against time as she knows in her heart that if she doesn't find Saskia soon it will be too late - but is it already too late?

I loved being taken back in time to a different country and the author has brilliantly described the scenes and life of that period so brilliantly I could really envisage the life and times. The description of the time helps to soften what could be a very dark story with opium addiction being rife among everyone from doctors to the poor and desperate.

At times heart rending this is an absolutely gripping story that had me glued to each page. I really enjoyed reading it even more than I thought I would - absolutely brilliant and definitely 5 stars from me

KATE WARNE’S SISTER IS MISSING is a great fictionalized story about the first woman detective to work for Pinkerton and is set in New York City in1861 as the Civil War was starting. Upon returning home, Kate Warne, finds her sister Saskia, could not be found. Kate fears her involvement with the stopping of Lincoln's assassination could have something to do with it. Her investigation begins to uncover a troubling family dilemma involving the inheritance of the family home left to Kate and her two siblings.

Another woman detective and Kate's partner Hattie Lawton along with Buck, her Pinkerton love interest are other key characters trying to find her sister.

There are many twists and turns and what you think is a misdirection may not be. The drugs, Opium and Landanum, can be purchased at any pharmacy during this period. The addition to them play a key role in Kate's sister Saskia's disappearance.

A dysfunctional family, a woman detective not welcome in many circles, the Opium and Laudanum epidemic and the secret tunnels of Chinatown have made this a book I could not put down.

This is a well-written mystery/historical thriller and you will want to see how it all plays out. It prompted me to research Kate Warne and Pinkerton!

~2.5 stars~

This book had a very interesting premise. I really enjoyed reading about a strong female detective. I also liked the bit of romance between Kate and Buck. It was extremely slow burn but very sweet. The book’s pace was generally somewhat lagging but still had some good, exciting plot points and a surprising conclusion.

My biggest problem with the book was the minimal character development. I just didn’t care about any of the characters, and that hindered my ability to become fully immersed in the novel. The story lacked that touch of magic that makes characters come to life. Furthermore, the memories and other POVs that were included in the book were rather jarring and oddly placed, which made it even harder to be invested in the story.

Overall, this was an interesting story, though the execution was rather mediocre. I’d recommend it to those who enjoy dry, historical novels.

Kate Warne is a Pinkerton Detective, it’s 1861 and there are plenty of things that Kate should be looking into, but the most import to her is that her sister Saskie has gone missing. Is it in retaliation for her successes, personal or just a coincidence. Whatever it is Kate needs to sort it, as she can’t function properly until she’s found her.

I loved the idea of this story, particularly as Kate was a real person, the first female detective, known for her cunning, expertise, disguises and sheer bravery. As with every story about a real person, there is obviously a bit of artistic licence taken by the author. But this was so well researched, written and plotted, it felt authentic, especially for the time, when there was civil war brewing, assassinations plotted and thwarted, and slavery was still rife in the South. Really good read, and good twist at the end. Highly recommended. 4 1/2🌟

This is a different sort of book for me as I don't usually read historical fiction. I have read a book by this author before and enjoyed it. Also the blurb drew me in with the mention of the Pinkerton agency and the involvement of 2 strong women as lead characters.

I really enjoyed it. I loved how the author seamlessly weaves actual historical events in with some fiction. I didn't realise Kate was an actual real-life character so it was very interesting to get a sense of the era and danger of the time. I found myself totally transported to that era thanks to the wonderful and skilful style of writing. The reliance at the time on opium and cocaine was eye-opening.
