Mere Sense: A Memoir of Men, Migraine, and the Mysteries of Being Highly Sensitive

Rate this book
“Stop being so sensitive.” “You’re too emotional. Get over it already.” “You overthink everything.” These are words, sometimes well-intentioned, sometimes not, thrown at people who are a little different from the norm. But what if your temperament was naturally prone to deep emotional feelings, a tendency to process information more deeply, and physical, as well as emotional, overstimulation?

If you are part of the “I don’t fit in” crowd who often takes criticism for what only seems natural, take heart. You are not alone.

In this memoir, Monica Nelson shares her lifetime struggle in getting acquainted with her own sensitive nature. At a time when sensory processing sensitivity was not known or acknowledged as a real phenomenon, she set out to find answers to questions she found hard to explain about herself.

Whether you are an HSP (highly sensitive person) or love one, you’ll find something useful in this book. Monica shares the ups and downs of her satisfying journey to knowledge and insight of the sensitive person’s experience. You may even discover connections you were previously not aware of.

About the author

Monica Nelson began her writing career in her 12th summer. While her neighborhood friends were playing, she sat under a tree in the backyard, writing her first romance novel. It was dreadful.

Growing up, she decided that writing was not in her skill set. She took other jobs. But the writing bug nagged at her conscience leading her to make a mid-life career change. She initially found success writing technical documentation during the dot-com bubble. This satisfied her for a while. As the desire to write expanded within her, she branched out into blog posts, an editorial column in a local newspaper, and marketing materials.

She continued to study the craft, hone her skills, and practice. She finished and published a memoir in 2022. Immediately she began work on that long-neglected romance novel that had been trying to emerge from her for decades. She finished and published it in 2024.

She enjoys many forms of writing including fiction, nonfiction, and memoir.

She lives in an eastern Nebraska town with her husband, a dog, and a cat.
