Demon Magic #3

Malicious Midpoint

Rate this book
Nothing can go wrong with being in love with a demon and having a dragon familiar whose idea of a fun time is watching me plummet to the ground, right? Now that things have settled down, I’m hoping to finally get some peace and quiet to spend with Havoc.

Instead, we get a guy who can walk the river of the dead, a centaur that seems allergic to pants, and an angel who has only one true love: himself.

This is the group of misfits I’ve been given to protect the district.

Sometimes I can’t help but wonder how we stopped an unbelievably powerful dark mage.

After finding a strange book in the middle of the woods that seems to be connected to curse magic, I find myself in the presence of someone from my past… someone I never expected to meet again. As the clues lead us into a district on the brink of destruction, Havoc and I realize that in order to stop the district from collapsing and taking down our friends with it, we can’t do it alone. With the assistance of my chaotic crew, we are going to stop this darkness before it consumes those we care about.

But everything comes at a cost because when you work with magic, nothing is predictable.

✅ Quick read
✅🆗 Characters
🆗 Humor felt forced
🆗 Plot
🆗 Repetitive elements from the previous books
❌ Marco
❗️❗️Trigger warnings: deaths and mild gore
❗️❗️I would recommend reading Shadow’s Origin before this book to get more background on Etienne and the district he comes from.

2.5 stars, and I think I will stop here with this series.

The plot felt a little all over the place. Something was happening at Jacob’s school, then in Etienne’s old district, but the connection between both events became clear only at the very end, making the rest of the book feel like a disjointed adventure.

There are twists, but they were a little repetitive from what we had in the first 2 books. Someone they trusted ended up betraying them, and someone who was supposed to be dead ended up not being so dead after all. Also, as is the case in the previous books, the demise of the bad guy happened rather quickly and felt anticlimactic.

I was intrigued at first, because I thought that most of the intrigue would revolve around Jacob's magical school, and while I am not a huge fan of Academy settings, because it often comes with juvenile/immature characters, it would have been interesting to have this setting with Miles and Havoc, because they are not teenagers. Sadly though, whatever happened at the school barely seemed to be connected to the main plot, and served only as a weak connection so that Etienne could connect this situation to something that happened in his old district and so everyone would have a reason to go investigate in said old district.

The humor felt forced. Miles and Havoc are joking even in the middle of life-threatening situations, and it felt forced and weird at times. Not that their banter si weird, because that’s what I love about them, but the timing was just not good. Every other characters also seem to develop a sense of humour in this book, and they were all being sassy or trying to make jokes even when it was not a good time for it. It gave a book with a lot of good, sassy banter, but banter and jokes that just didn’t fit with all the action and dire situations going on around them.

Marco is just annoying. I love Alice Winters’ over the top characters, but he is too over the top with his narcissisim. I can’t stand it. It also appears that he loses a few brain cells with every book, as he gets dumber and more and more annoying. I really don’t like him, and he didn’t bring the comedic relief the author intended to.

Very fun adventure, I had a good time, like the previous books, this was filled with comedy, romance, mystery, action, cute sex scenes... easy reading, well written, love all the characters, the plot was intriguing and surprising, I got the mystery quickly, but one peace! I was entertained! :-D

Congratulations to Greg Boudreaux for the marvellous performance, fulled committed, great acting, love the way that he does different voices really well!!!

Another gorgeous cover from Cate Ashwood Designs, kudos!!!

Same thoughts as last time.... this book was the weakest out of the first three! I am hoping book 4 will be better!

Original Read/Listen: September 2022
Audio: 5 Stars, Greg B!!!
Book: 3-3.5 stars

Compared to books one and two, this one wasn’t as good in my opinion. Yes it still had the signature Alice Winters humor, but I think it might have just been me, but I was zoning out during the book… idk I wish we had more Iya and Sam, but instead we got Lachlan, who was good but not not like Iya haha

I am a little bummed about not loving it but maybe if I do another reread of these books I will like this one more the second time around.

Also the narration by Greg Boudreaux was amazing as always.

Okay so I love Miles, Havoc, Menace and the whole crew. And yes there’s humour and some fabulous new characters here. Namely Lachlan. I do love Lachlan but…

I’m in the minority here I know but the story just didn’t work for me. I don’t know why and everyone else seemed to love it but I just didn’t

These ridiculous idiots own my heart.

I honestly find myself grinning like a big dork, and giggling like a lunatic while listening to these audiobooks.

I'm in love.

As stated in the previous reviews, If you don't like dick jokes, don't read this series. lol

Straight onto book 4

Not sure what happened here

I found the plot of this book to be far more confusing and never really properly explained to a point where I completely understand what was going on and what the motivation was.

Things seemed to be unnecessarily complicated and very confusing but I still loved everything which happened between Miles and Havoc.

Menace was also still there causing chaos and I thought Lachlan the centaur was a very funny addition to the secondary character crew.

Overall though this one felt a bit flat and the ending was a bit abrupt.

ETA: Re-reading this one to refresh my memory for the upcoming 4th book. I adore this series in audio so much, Greg must have a blast recording this with all the over the top voices between Havoc and Marco and everyone. I adore everyone in this!

This series might be my second or third favorite series of Alice's after Hitman, it's just SO FUCKING FUNNY.

Greg does an incredible job narrating this series, also one of my favorites of his now haha. The entire scene with the yellow skittle and the pants is just award winning worthy.

Honestly, Havoc and his hatred for Lachlan, Menace, Marco, just everyone but Miles is hilarious. And there are so, so many funny moments in this book. I love Lachlan, can we please get more of him? And Marco? LOL. I'm just dying with his funny they all are together.

This series must be read in order. It's one of my favorites, and I highly recommend this be read in audio format!!

The audio was pretty great

Malicious Midpoint sets off a new story for Miles and Havoc.

I'm still processing. It was one hell of a wild ride. There's everything in this, some steam and plenty of sweetness. A ton of action and magic.

I love Miles and Havoc together, since there are established there's no relationship angst. They are very secure in what they have. Havoc's jealousy us hilarious though.

There's a new story arc which isn't complete here, though there isn't a cliffhanger it's more of a HFN. Lots of returning characters so you absolutely have to have read the first 2 books.

Plenty of humour and a whole lot of fun

I really, really enjoyed this. The first book in this series was the first Alice Winters book I read, so this series has a special spot for me. I was thoroughly entertained from the moment I started this right through to the end. Tons of humour, the OTT stuff I tend to really love, and I was absolutely absorbed by the overarching plot! The side characters in this series are some of my most favourite ever.

Half a star knocked off for very little romance. Even though this is an established couple, I would’ve appreciated more romance time. Also, I always get a kick out of how not great this author is at writing sex scenes lol.

Minority opinion alert: I didn't really like this book. I fully enjoyed the first 30%, but after that it went off the rails for me.

The "mystery," for me, was a bit of a confused mess and verged on "telling" territory, since what was happening on the page didn't always match the expository conclusions being drawn about whodunnit and why. I feel like a reduction in red herrings would have made the story a lot more enjoyable, and the intimate scene that was squashed in there was just...awkwardly-timed. Additionally, the was super cringe and I wish that had never been put in there since that was the last straw for me.

As everyone who reviews books always says, reader mileage will vary, so I hope this book works a lot better for other people than it did for me.

5 stars for the narrator I love Greg Boudreaux he is one of my favs. He does another fantastic job here.

As usual something is amiss and Miles is front and center with his crew trying to figure out.
Surprise someone he thought was dead is not, no not THAT someone 😆
Curses are happening.
Betrayal arises in the gang.
Dark magic is always near and it is up to Miles to fix it all.

This was an entertaining listen. I just needed a little more Miles and Havoc love for it to be a five star listen 🤷🏽‍♀️💅💁🏽‍♀️

This book took me on a crazy, fast paced wild ride! This book had so many twists and turns and action expected from The Penetrators. It also had more steam than what I’ve come to normally expect from an Alice Winters novel and I enjoyed every delicious second of it. It was great to see more from certain side characters we’ve seen less of previously and the introduction to one of the funniest side characters I think Alice has ever written. So much is coming at the group from so many different angles and there’s a traitor among them! What an ending too! Where will Miles and Havoc go from here? I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and couldn’t recommend it more. Not a standalone! You definitely need to have read the previous two before diving into this one.

Audiobook Review

This can't be the last book, there are so many things left unknown.

Spoilers ahead

So I inhaled this series in the last couple of days. I dunno why it took me so long to read the last two books in the series but I'm kicking myself for waiting for so long.

In this one Miles and Havoc are meandering through life and they thought everything was good since Geoff was defeated. Alas, this was not the case.

Come to find out, the person Miles killed out of mercy when he was a child was not dead. She was alive and able to take magic from others and use it.

After going through so much, the end fight started when Leandra walked up to them while they had sex in the woods. Cause it's always smart to get some sexytimes when being hunted.

They of course win but then Miles has to save his friend who has black magic inside them but the only way to save her was to put that inside himself.

And that's when it ends.

Really? No follow up, no resolution to the magic? No HEAs for the rest of this motley crew?

I need more. So much more.

Greg Boudreaux did an excellent job and I was captivated throughout the story.

I received an ARC copy of this book for my honest review.

OMG!! This book was packed with a lot! It was very tense at times but I swear I laughed out loud a lot! I love Havoc and Miles, but the new character Lachlan was just awesome. He’s so sweet and I loved when he ‘wore’ pants for Havoc lol! Great read as usual by Alice!! You will not be disappointed!!!

Character- 3.75/5
Plot- 3/5
Pacing-3.5/5
Entertainment- 5/5
Rating- 3.75/5

Are these books getting funnier? I'm pretty sure they are. Honestly I'm going to keep this one short because this is pretty much the same as the last couple of books in this series, as in the problems are all the same.

The characters remain somewhat static, though with more development than usual for our side characters. The plot is once again meandering quite severely, to the point where I'm not actually sure why we're in a particular place anymore, only that I'm having a fun time watching it unfold. Its....perplexing.

This is exactly why I include an 'Entertainment' rating, because even though the writing is similarly flawed, I'm having an absolute blast reading this. The characters are hilarious and unique and the banter is top tier. It truly carries the book, the whole series in fact. Its definitely not the quality of the plot and pacing, and certainly not the spice, which is noticeably absent in this one for the majority.

Yeah I don't know what else to say, this book is a bundle of slightly unhinged and hilarious banter alongside some tepid writing. And I still want to read more, so take that for what it is.

A must read for you Demon Magic fans. I swear our boys just cannot stay out of trouble. Miles, Havoc & Menace head off to a neighboring district, one that Etienne escaped from, to investigate a curse. When they get there, very bad things start to happen. Menace is catnapped & someone is trying to sever the familiar/mage bond. Miles' magic goes haywire, someone he never thought he would see again shows up & there is a traitor, though not willingly, in their midst. The story was very fast paced, filled with danger, and all the snark/shenanigans that you have grown to love with this crew (the waterbed was awesome). I loved Lachlan, a centaur, who loves to wind Havoc up. I'm seeing a possible love connection with Lachlan & Marco, fingers crossed :).

I received a copy of this book from the Author, and this is my honest opinion

Malicious Midpoint brings Havoc, Miles and Menace back with flourish!! They are back into another crazy adventure/mystery that they must work to solve along with some new characters. I love it when Miles and Havoc get into the action. Havoc is so protective and some of his antics are hilarious! Havoc’s jealousy is so freakin funny! Loved Lachlan and I cannot wait to read more of him. Overall, a fantastic read! Well written with that perfect pacing that hooks you, keeps you hanging on the edge of your seat until it’s done!!

I should've done a re-read first. Took a while to get used to the characters again, although Miles and Havoc are pretty unforgettable. Felt like one of those journey destination ones. Menace was chaotic and the centaur and Marco were bizarre. I hope they end up together. Liked the vampire, Lanni not so much. Curious what will happen next.

Ehhhh.

First of all, this book took me by surprise since I didn’t even think there were going to be more in this series and now it’s very obvious that there will be.

I absolutely loved the first two books and they’re among my favorites. Yet this book was so-so. I didn’t find myself that engaged reading it and it even took me the week to finish it whereas i finished the first two within the same day.

The plot just wasn’t all that exciting and the dynamics seemed stagnant. While I loved seeing more of the Menace-Havoc-Miles dynamic, this was disappointingly unexciting.

3〜3.2 stars?? This was probably my least favorite in the series, the story just felt really all over the place and kind of a little chaotic or messy or jumbled. 🤷🏻‍♀️ However, with how it ended, I assume there will be a book 4, and if that’s the case, I really am looking forward to reading it.

5 stars. Another stellar series from one of the cheekiest, silliest, BEST authors of all time. Alice Winters writes sensationally fun, funny, ridiculous stories filled with snark, wit, adventure, affection and romance. She has so many great books and this series is another example of a good-time in written form. Demon Magic is along the same lines as Medium Trouble, more shenanigans than Vampire Related Crimes. It less than The Hitman’s Guide. A perfect sweet spot!

A mage and a demon. Yes, please! Four book series, reviewed as a whole since it’s one big story. The MCs have known each other a long time, so we have a friends to lovers situation with great glimpses backwards where we learn more about their relationship and past through memories.

Great world building, nothing too complicated, pure entertainment. Wonderful cast of kooky side characters and just the right amount of bumbling, what-the-heck, cluelessness to make the story shine. Each book has a thwart-the-bad-guy storyline which gives us a battle marked by unpreparedness, klutzy, tomfoolery in the very best of ways. This isn’t some complex mission impossible story full of competency, so don’t read it for that. Read it for the light hearted take on a rag tag group of people with their heart in the right place, who just so happen to get the job done.

Series of four books, following the same couple. Must be read in order.

Mage, magic, demon, m/m, HEA, series.

There’s neigh-thing like Miles & Havoc!

I can’t help falling for this lovably chaotic, endlessly quirky cast of characters. Flirty centaurs, destructive demons, meddling mages, and a whole host of more, it’s like the very best episode of magic gone wild. Think of the weirdest, most outrageous, most unlikely scenarios you could imagine times ten, double it, triple it again, and you’ll still never come close to the amazing mayhem that is Miles’s life.

“‘Nice job, cat,’ Havoc says as he tries to fist bump the cat.
When the cat fist bumps him back, I decide that life really isn’t normal anymore.”

Was it ever, Miles? Eh, who cares, I love, love, love them all! Let’s be honest though, Havoc and Menace are only one small part. Miles excels at his own form of tort—I mean, tough love. I love this amazingly outrageous and zany world. All the… dare I say it… havoc is the best kind of fun. I loved absolutely every part, and though the ending has me pants-ing for more, I’ll console myself with thoughts of fiercely cute cuddles with a certain menace.

Havoc, Miles and Menace are back!!! Malicious Midpoint is the new book in Demon Magic series.
As always when this guys are involved in some situation things didn’t go as plan, seeking information about some some events they go to another District and everything goes boom! Literally! Miles has an encounters with someone from his past that puts him and his friends in danger.

All the gang work together to eliminate the new treat as a new characters like Lachlan the centaur who is a flirt, so much fun watching him make Havoc jealous! Menace who is a and always will be a menace but deep deep down loves Miles..lol…I love Havoc!!! and how much he loves Miles and the banter between them is always hilarious! Miles, Miles, Miles always taking care of everyone and doing everything to help, There’s plenty of crazy people, action, sweet and sexy moments between Miles and Havoc!

I have wonderful time reading this book!!! This ends in a HFN and I looking forward for more of this series

Another Fun Romp with Miles and Havoc in Alice WInters 3rd installment in the Demon Magic Series “Malicious Midpoint. In this story Miles and Havoc are trying to help figure out a mystery going on at a School that Miles’ friend runs. They soon discover that there are links connecting them to what is going on, and Miles’ past makes a startling return that he never expected.
I love anything that Alice Winter’s produces and this is no exception. The writing style is upbeat and comedic with just enough romance and heat to make any romance author happy. The Author just instinctively knows how to write characters that you just connect with and want to know more about. Not only the leads, but her crazy world of friends that this pair continues to collect. This is a great new release for the summer!

In typical Miles and Havoc style there’s chaos from the get go and Menace is being on top form.

There are so many funny little snippets through this book. And Havoc’s reactions to paper cuts are completely reasonable!

The centaur Lachlan is amazing both his whole sunny over the top attitude and also how beautifully he describes Miles and Havocs bond. Love him and hope to see much more of him in the future. He’s a really multi dimensional character.

Miles and Havoc are so strong in their bond it’s lovely no drama on that front. But drama from other parts.

The fun secondary characters make interesting returns and this book being a new story arch leaves you with lots of questions needing answered and a big OOOOO moment at the end.
