Kohai is a mangaka who doesn’t have any time to relax. Her partner, Senpai, is jobless and has nothing but. This is the story of two partners goofing around when they should be working and having the time of their lives as a result.
This probably tops even The Two of Them Are Pretty Much Like This for utterly inessential but charming yuri fluff. Especially since that manga took a turn to the dramatic last volume (to excellent effect, I might add).
The stakes, such as they are, involve Kohai’s perpetually encroaching deadline and Senpai’s dogged pursuit of getting her to goof off. The romance is practically nonexistent, but has the occasionally lovely moment of ‘we’re just ridiculously comfortable around one another’ that a tightly bonded pair have.
Thus the two of them go all over the place in a series of travelogues that often feature some pretty solid jokes. The first couple chapters in particular end on excellent punchlines - I’ll single out the very first chapter where the phone business pays off note perfect at the conclusion - but there’s a better consistency than most straight comedies (pardon the expression) throughout.
It’s as warm and enjoyable as it is absolutely inessential. There are bursts of clever that make the whole thing worthwhile, along with that heartfelt sentiment breaking through (when they clean Kohai’s old room, Senpai’s declaration at the end is really sweet).
No driving plot, just two partners having a fun time occasionally battered by job stress. Its weakness is its strength and if you want something that’s a taut drama or searing examination of feelings, don’t even bother. But this is a great book to relax with - it gets its vibe across and then some.
3.5 stars - I think it’s better than the average, slight as it is, but there’s also no way I’d give anything this lightweight a full 4 stars. Definitely recommended if it sounds at all appealing.
