Kept me guessing all the way through so many twists and so much action. Bought it not realising it was the 4th part of a series (although it can be read as a standalone). Will be buying the rest of the series so i can get more depth on the characters

Cassie was convicted of murdering her husband but is out of jail after serving her sentence. She is waiting for her daughter Grace to reach 18 so she can legally see her. Now she is the prime suspect in her daughters death. Journalist Dee was asked by Grace to look into the death of her father, she thinks her Mother is innocent. Dee refused but after Graces death feels compelled to honor Graces wish. There are a lot of twists in this story, I wasn’t sure who the guilty party was alto I suspected several characters. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.

This is my first novel by author Sheila Bugler and its book number 4 in a series.

The blurb reads

"Years ago, she went to prison for killing her husband. Now, her daughter is dead too.

Cassie McNamara was found guilty of the murder of her husband, Paul Cavellini, but she has always protested her innocence. Upon her release, she is ready to start over and hires local journalist, Dee Doran, to prove she was wrongfully convicted.

Cassie and Paul’s young daughter, Grace, was adopted by Paul’s family. When eighteen-year-old Grace goes missing and her body is found, all eyes turn to Cassie as the prime suspect in her daughter’s death. Then, Cassie, just like Grace, disappears.

Cassie maintains her innocence but she's terrified and has no choice but to run. Left behind to investigate, Dee must work the truth behind Grace and Paul's deaths, and what Cassie is running from – or who."

Having read the blurb this sounded right like my kind of novel and I could not wait to read it. I found that the book got straight into the depth of the story from page 1, there were no introductions to the characters just full throttle. I found this way, for me personally, to be slightly confusing as there are many characters and I did find myself having to re-read some parts so that I knew who was who.

I am glad that I stuck with this novel as it was a good read. We meet Dee, who is a journalist and she is investigating a body that has washed up in her home time and it has connections to Cassie's case. Cassie has been released from prison for the murder of her husband many years ago but Cassie has always denied these charges. The body found is Cassie's daughter and together Cassie and Dee work hard to uncover the truth.

A really good read that did not initially grip me but it did around 2/3 of the way through.

I will be putting the other books in this series into my "to be read" pile.

Thanks to Netgalley, Sheila Bugler and the publishers for allowing me a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

I have been waiting impatiently for the release of another Dee Doran story and missed the NetGalley window. However, I was able to download a copy from Amazon and immediately found myself absorbed by the story.
The story opens as police discover the body of a missing girl, Grace. Dee is immediately moved to action as she had ignored the girl’s pleas to help prove her mother’s innocence for the crime of killing her husband. But Cassie, Grace’s mother, had already served her time and the case seemed to be cut and dried. All the evidence seems to point toward Cassie having killed her own daughter.
The action starts almost immediately as Dee tracks down Cassie, who is now working in a hair salon and trying to remain under the radar. After a brief chat, Cassie disappears, and the trail of clues suggests that there’s a lot more to this story than was initially evident.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Sheila Bugler’s writing is how absorbing I find her books. I felt as though I’d only been reading for a short while, so was surprised to discover that I was halfway through and had been enjoying Eastbourne for several hours.
Whilst the story is easy to follow, the structure is rather complex, but the writing is so skilled that it never feels overwhelming. She releases enough clues without giving the entire plot away and I felt that I was investigating along with Dee.
Once again, Dee finds herself at odds with the police, who want her to stay away from the case. Of course, there’d be no story if she did that, so she puts herself in danger as she pushes to find answers to the mystery of Grace’s death.
This is another 5-star read and I can highly recommend it.

Having read the previous books in this series I was pleased to be given the opportunity to read this book. I found this book to be a pleasure to read, and one I thoroughly enjoyed. The main character Dee, an investigative journalist is so down to earth, likeable, determined and feisty. When a young woman goes missing and is then found dead Dee makes her own enquiries alongside the Police investigation, which then puts her life at risk. I really liked this read mainly because it is told from a journalists perspective which I find is a refreshing change. I thought the story had a very good plot line, it was written well, I felt it read very well and came together beautifully towards the end. The book grabbed my attention from the first page and held it all the way through. I loved the past and present time lines which were integral to the story and setting the scenes, and the glimpses the author gave into Dee’s personal life. There are a lot of separate story threads here that keep me guessing - I thought I knew who the murderer was and was very wrong. I have to say this book had everything I like - suspense, believable characters, mystery and plenty of twists. I’d recommend this book although would say read the books in order to get a sense of Dee as a character.

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.

I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review.

“Miscarriage of justice…Or ruthless murder…”

Bugler has put together a gripping read where the pages just turn themselves. I was completely invested in it straight off the bat and it is so very compelling. I was very intrigued by Cassie and her story where the questions of is she a murderer, or victim and was she involved in the death of her daughter Grace, plagued me throughout. I throughly enjoyed the twisty ride I was taken on for the answers.

I loved being back with Dee, who now feels like an old friend and is such a wonderful character. It’s setting in Eastbourne, is majestic and menacing at the same time, providing the perfect backdrop. The pace is fast and at times had me on the edge of my seat. There were definitely some nail biting moments as it comes to a head and it is all brought to life through flawless writing.

I absolutely love this series and You Were Always Mine is another brilliant addition to it. It also came as no surprise that I ended up devouring it in one sitting, like I have with the previous books,, which is a testament to Bugler’s talent for storytelling. While this book can be read as a standalone, I do encourage you reading the others in the series as you would be missing out on another three fabulous reads.

This book is the fourth installement of this series, however I do believe it can be enjoyed as a standalone too.

Cassie McNamara found herself serving a prison sentence following the murder of her husband, Paul - a murder in which she did not commit. This sentence left her unable to see her daughter Grace, who is fast approaching adulthood which means she will legally be able to see her once again.

Cassie is determined to clear her name, and enlists the help of Dee Doran to do so, however life is about to deal her yet another dreadful blow as Grace goes missing - and Cassie finds herself the primary suspect for the murder of her own child.

It is safe to say that this book was full of twists and turns from start to finish, all of which kept me thoroughly engrossed and needing to read more. The plot is perfectly paced, and the characters are brought to life wonderfully by the authors writing style.

Cassie McNamara went to prison for the murder of her husband, Paul Cavellini, a murder she did not commit. She hasn't seen her daughter Grace for so long, but when Grace reaches eighteen she will be allowed to legally see her. She seeks out investigative reported Dee Doran to try & clear her name but then Grace goes missing & is found at the base of Beachy Head. Cassie is now suspected of murdering her too. So she disappears. Dee believes Cassie & is soon making waves among the Cavellini family. She is not someone who gives up easily- even when it becomes obvious that someone will stop at nothing to keep their secrets. Regardless of the danger to herself Dee is determined to get to the truth.

Although this is the fourth in the series it works perfectly well as a stand-alone. There were lots of misdirections & twists to keep the reader guessing. I really liked Dee & her passion to get to the truth. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

Still good, but the # of times people get bonked on the head in this series is getting ridiculous. And the # of times she spouts off at the mouth & has to apologize afterwards. And how can she still find her house relaxing—to the point of sitting out on the deck, in the dark, by herself, in this isolated spot—after all the times she’s heard some unknown person in the house & even been attacked?! And repeating the heavy breather on the phone bit after just having that in the last book! Some typos in the e-book, not just missing or extra words but e.g. getting her story wrong & saying she’s asking for her father when she’d initially said it was for her uncle. (Since the person she was speaking to didn’t catch it, & it was never brought up again, I’m assuming it wasn’t deliberate.) And yet, I was caught up in it enough to keep reading for long sessions. But the 1st book in this series was the best one.

This was an absolute joy to read! It's You Were Always Mine by Sheila Buglar which I received from Canelo_co via Netgalley and it will be published on 1 September.

We follow investigative journalist Dee Doran who starts an investigation after a young girl is found murdered. This young girl asked Dee for help in the case of her mother, convicted of the murdering her husband. Someone out there is keen on keeping things secret and they will go to great lengths to achieve that.

This book was a gripping thriller from the start. The book reads with great speed and it's truly a page-turner. You get a perfect insight into the main characters and especially Dee is quite likeable. The story is rather interesting as well turning to past events to solve a present day murder. Definitely a recommendation!

A good thriller, set on the south coast of England . Mainly investigated by Dee, a writer and broadcaster interested in crime. The police are involved, but not particularly intrinsic to the story . Lots of characters which takes some concentration, remembering who is who . The story is also told from multiple points of view and in different time frames which adds to the complexity.
The book kept my interest mostly, though seemed a bit long winded in the middle. Communication is sometimes a bit shallow , examples being that Dee and her boyfriend Ed, seem to fall out over stuff that any other adult would discuss . Is Dee's investigation slightly unbelievable ? There are certainly more than a few twists in the plot, which did seem reasonably believable.
All in all a good read though, my thanks to Net Galley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review

Before reading this, I did not realize it is a part of a series following investigative journalist Dee Doran. I usually try not to start in the middle of a series, but this could be read perfectly as a standalone. I was not confused at all. After reading this, I am definitely interested in the rest of the series. Dee is a great protagonist and a gripping character. She is very likable and relatable.

The other characters in this were also weirdly likable and I was intrigued by all of them. I thought the development of the characters was very even and I got a good sense for who they all were.

I really liked how the ending came full circle and answered all of my questions. I definitely did not see the twist coming at all either.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Number four in the Eastbourne Murder Mystery series and I have an inkling that You Were Always Mine may well be the last. Dee Doran still lives in her beach front house east of Eastbourne and is involved in an on/off relationship with Ed. Come the end the question still remains - do they, don't they, will she won't she? An almost surreal ending leaves one to ponder...

I did have trouble with the plot trying to keep tabs on who is who - that's probably down to me with my aging lack of concentration! Fair to say though that it is a typical Dee Doran plot where she does inevitably put herself in harm's way. For a moment I thought that Bugler was going to 'bump her off'. But no, so perhaps there is a number five on the horizon...

You Were Always Mine is book 4 in the Dee Doran series by Sheila Bugler and is set in Eastbourne. Dee is an Investigative Journalist and starts looking into an historic murder. Cassie had been jailed for the murder of her husband, Paul Cavellini, who is Grace’s father. A few months after her release, Grace is found murdered and Cassie is the main suspect. This was a fabulous read. It was so full of tension, I was on the edge of my seat. I grappled with who the murderer was, continually changing my mind. The characters all have their own secrets and Dee finds it difficult to get information from them. This was very well written and I kept thinking about it after I had finished.

Eastbourne was once a favourite holiday location for Lewis Carroll. The sea, the sands, and the great chalk cliffs of Beachy Head are now the killing fields of another great writer: Sheila Bugler.
Sheila excels in grasping the psychological impact of dark secrets, kept hidden for many years, until her investigative journalist creation, Dee Doran, starts digging deep below the surface of secrets and lies. The characters are engaging and at times frighteningly real. Throughout there's mystery and suspense growing in intensity till a denouement that is both poignant and blood red.

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the arc,

I loved this book! I had no idea it was a series when I started it but now I'm definitely going to read the others.

How did Grace die and did her mother Cassie really kill her father? Grace visits Dee before she dies to try and get her to look in to the truth, Dee declines her request but changes her mind once Grace is found dead at Beachy Head.

I was captivated by Dee and her desire to find out the truth. With twists and turns along the way Dee puts herself in danger but will the truth come out

I have never read this author before I didn’t realise this was the 4th book in the series it doesn’t really matter though but will definitely read the other 3 now. Cassie was put in jail for murdering her husband but has always denied it. She has a daughter Grace who is determined to clear her mother’s name she asked Dee who is a journalist to probe into her father’s murder as she gets involved with the investigation nothing is as it seems.

Definitely recommend and thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC

I really enjoyed You Were Always Mine for a lot of reasons, but the main reason was it felt like a crime novel but told from a perspective other than the police detective which I really appreciated. The mystery-level is high, and this is a classic whodunit that also explores family relationships, especially that of mother and daughter, and sisters. I'm giving four stars instead of five because I did think the ending was a little predictable, but was overall satisfying.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

When journalist Dee Doran investigates the murder of a young girl, she opens a can of worms leading her into danger. I really liked the characterisation in this book, especially Dee and Freya. I was hooked from the start. with the fast pace, tension and unfolding events. The writing was excellent and I constantly changed my mind as to the identity of the murderer. I would definitely recommend this book to lovers of mysteries and thrillers. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

Dee is a fleshed out, clever and strong main character and liked her.
The plot is well developed and the solid mystery kept me guessing.

An enjoyable 4.5 read. From the surprise bag at the Bay Tales 23. Investigative journalist Bee looks at an old murder and the recent daughters murder who was trying to clear her moth rs name. A bit too many characters at times and too contrived at the end as I don’t think liz would have lied originally.

DNF. Perhaps I just wasn’t in the right head space for this, and kept leaving long gaps in between picking it up - in a very difficult year. I just kept getting confused and this may have been me rather than the book but I’ve decided to bow out as it was preventing me starting other books. I may come back to it again.

You Were Always Mine by Sheila Bugler.
Cassie McNamara was found guilty of the murder of her husband, Paul Cavellini.
But she has claimed she is innocent. Is she though?
A good read. Didn't realise this was book 4 in a series. Well written though. 4*.

Felt the plot was over complicated by sub plots. Took most of the book to give any clues away and the 'plot twist' wasn't interesting. Completed the book but could easily have given up after a few chapters.
