When I tried to leave, Grave forced me to stay. He's obsessed with me, and not in the good kind of way. Griffin is out of the game, but he gives me a piece of information that can set me free.
"There's only one guy Grave's afraid of. If you want him dead, I suggest you make an alliance."
"Who's the guy?" I ask.
"Cauldron Beaufort. But you didn't hear that from me."
I travel to Cap-Ferrat, in the south of France, and find this powerful man.
But he's not the least bit interested in helping me.
Not for free, at least.
If I want his protection, I'll have to make it worth his while.
A New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author, Penelope Sky is known for her dark romance that makes you fall for her characters….no matter how dark they seem. Her books are being translated into several languages around the world, and she’s sold more than a million books worldwide. She lives in a small town in California with her husband, where she spends most of her time writing on the back porch.
General Note (Specific book details at the end): For some reason, I have fallen down a Penelope Sky rabbit hole this last week and have apparently decided to read her entire back list. Not sure how or why this is the case, but I am a mood reader and her formula is really hitting the spot for me. So here we are.
Speaking of formula...she has a VERY obvious one. And by that I mean that her characters are almost literally the same across every single series, which I can confidently say as I have literally read five of her series (three books each) since the beginning of the year. Four of those happening in the last week.
And I'm not even joking, her male/female leads are almost carbon copies of each other. The males are all billionaire assholes with ripped physiques they cultivate through a regimented workout program and a strict diet. Except for the scotch, of course. They ALL drink scotch. They also all call the lead female by a specific nickname for the entirety of each series and are players (who may or may not) dabble outside of the h/H relationship if they aren't clearly defined.
The female leads on the other hand are basically female perfection personified. They are all tiny, with tiny waists, but luscious breasts and asses. They never workout, but maintain their figures despite eating whatever they want. And, of course, they are the most beautiful females to ever live. In every room they enter. And the hero always becomes obsessed with them as they are so not like other girls, you know? Because sassy and sexy and best sex ever. And they sometimes have liaisons of their own.
And you know what?
Cause I am loving it at the moment. It's like reordering your favorite current meal every day, knowing it's going to be delicious. And I am perfectly content to gorge myself right now.
So there you go.
I am really loving Camille and Cauldron so far.
***Spoilers for this series and Wolf series***
After just finishing the Wolf series (which I did really like), I am enjoying the dedicated monogamy here, to be honest. Nice change. Already started book two, because DUH. I'm in my Penelope Sky era after all.
DNF. This book reminded me why I stopped reading this author's work. This is nowhere near the level of writing I enjoyed in her earlier books. Starting with the characters' names - Grave and Cauldron? Am I supposed to read this with a straight face? The plot is so flimsy that I am hard pressed to understand anybody's motivations. The expereinced call girl heroine appears completely incapable of doing her job and upholding her end of the deal and the very very bad man "hero" can't follow through on anything to save his life. Add in repetitive and unimaginative sex scenes and I'm just too bored to conitnue.
“The past belongs in the past, and if a man can’t live in the present with you, then he’s not the right man for you. If a man can’t forget about your old lovers, or if he’s too weak to make you forget about them, then he’s also not the right man for you.” I really liked this book. Yeeees! It’s worth the reading!
Her character, her personality, her thought process, her story. Her. Her. Her. She was just a solid “No” for me.
Camilla is a selfish shrew of a character. She’s self absorbed and CONSTANTLY disillusioned to her situation. From the moment she decides to run from her ex- which she does simply bc he asked her to marry him- she inserts herself into another persons life like they owed it to her to protect her from her enemy and solve all of her problems.
The premise of a strong female character is something I adore finding in books. The strength they find to tackle and solve their problems, the strength in their growth along the way, the strength in their willpower and sense of self, of not shrinking and becoming smaller in front of their O.P partners. I LOVE strong female leads. This FL wasn’t a “strong” I meshed well with.
She’s mouthy and stuck up when she asks others for huge favors. She ignores all of the ML’s verbal warnings that she is pushing for something he doesn’t consent to. She blurs lines to the point of only seeing what she wants, demands answers and compromises from the ML he clearly made known she has no right to bc of their relationship, she’s says she understands the game bc that’s what she and her ex were (a transactional relationship) but can’t tell the difference with her and Cauldron and then gets UPSET when Cauldron draws the same line with her after SHE falls in love with HIM but he doesn’t fully feel the same way.
This heroine was a mess of conveniences in logic and morality when it came to her and what she wanted but she gets to throw a temper tantrum the moment she’s reminded of her place and what she herself signed up for. It was a hard pill to swallow bc she’s coming to someone else for a huge favor but acting like she has the high ground in this entire exchange. The moment it’s confirmed Cauldron has just been using her as a means of revenge she gets butt hurt (bc again, SHE has feelings for HIM) and runs back to her ex- but not bc she loves him, she’s probably just doing it in hopes that it hurts Cauldron like she feels hurt. She never once considers how to extract herself from both of these men entirely. She never once has a thought for herself on how she can SAVE HERSELF except for relying on a MAN to do it for her (I don’t care that Graves would track her down no matter what. At least she can say she tried. That she stuck up for herself and tried to make it on her own without anyones help or brains save for her own. That’s strong FL determination, not some lazy “I don’t want to look over my shoulder for my whole liiiife! That’s so much work!”
As for the ML, he had his own hiccups. Out of the two of them I really thought he would remain the same and continue to be his original, unfeeling, blunt, all business type, man. Instead, somewhere around the 30% or 40% mark, he starts essentially falling in love with her for all of the qualities that annoyed the sh*t out of him at first- and not in the cute way. Her mouth, her whining, her crossing boundaries and lines he states and makes clear again and again, her selfishness, her demands. He goes from “wtf” to “wow, I’m kinda smitten now” and it was just such a sudden switch into it too for me.
Cauldron never gives her any encouragement to hope for more. His actions in giving her the things she wants is simply bc it’s easier a lot of the times. Their monogamy, their kisses, the deeper conversations they have, the way his butler treats her, ext. When the truth comes out that she’s just been a ploy for revenge this whole time and that he used the video to show off to Graves, it’s frustrating to me that she didn’t see that coming or suspect it or that she was offended about it at all. It’s always been clear what their relationship was, and it was always obvious that Cauldron was doing any of this for her bc it was messing with Graves. Her hurt is her own. Just like Cauldrons guilt and possible developing of feelings is on him- and again, just reads as being a path of least resistance for him to take vs me feeling he might ACTUALLY be falling for the FL.
The only other thing I’ll say is that the s€c scenes were so cut and dry. I know romance novels can overhype what “It” actually is but this was so brutally in and out, even when both of them start falling deeper into each other, that it never made me excited that they were joining together. A lot of the times it just sounded like a “hot” chore. You know, go shopping, paint nails, have intercourse, feed dog. Idk, I love Penelope Sky, tho I haven’t read her in a minute, so I guess I was just expecting so much more from her than, “well, he had a big d!ck”.
Look, I read this novel to the last page. Overall, it did keep me turning the pages till the end but I didn’t connect with any of these characters (except for maybe sympathizing with the ML for having a stranger barge into his life and making themselves comfy) or empathize with the FL and her plight at all and that made liking either of them so hard. It probably actually made the entire read come off as blasé and bland instead of what everyone else seemed to see in it to rate it so highly.
I have read and loved Penelope Sky for years. Her books are dark, dirty and so full of antiheroes it'll make your head spin! I was so drawn to Lesser Evil just by the blurb. Cauldron and Camille were spectacular. Their passion was so fiery and their banter just as delicious. But that ending was pure WTF. I can't wait for more! 4 stars! ~Ratula
4.3 ⭐ Mi primer libro de Penelope y lo amé 😍 (Seguramente no tuve que haber iniciado con esta trilogía pero bueno ya que 🙈🤣)
✨📖✨
"The past belongs in the past, and if a man can’t live in the present with you, then he’s not the right man for you. If a man can’t forget about your old lovers, or if he’s too weak to make you forget about them, then he’s also not the right man for you.”
This book was a bit frustrating. The so called Hero says he is only capable of so much, if you've read the author's previous work then it's more or less the same type, no feelings. The heroine agrees that this is ok, she feels more and then is disappointed he can't give her more. Pretty much rinse, repeat.
Hours. Hours is all it took for me to read this book. Penelope Sky is a beast with her words and she will forever own me with them. Cauldron and Camille set the pages of this book on fire. The passion and steam between them is everything I love. Gah the drama and angst had me pulled it immediately. This is a relationship of convenience that of course takes a turn into love, or does it. Camille needs protection and Cauldron is the one who can provide it, after a few crafty stalking techniques from Camille. If you haven’t read a Penelope Sky book before what are you doing?! You need to jump on it and this is a perfect starting point. It’s dark but not too dark, at least not as some of her other books. I highly recommend it because she has, as always, given me a read I just love!
I’m excited for more. This was dark and delicious and the plot has me intrigued. Camille is a strong heroine I really enjoy. She goes for what she wants and brings cauldron to his knees.
This is not dark like the rest of her books but it was fun. 2 very powerful men basically fighting over her. Had its ups and downs but it was entertaining and different.
4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stars! Billionaire romance. I loved this start to this series. Oh Cauldron, you lovable asshole, the mistakes you are making! I love the chemistry between these 2, it’s fire 🔥. Can’t wait until 8/29/2022 for the second book, the wait is torture. Definitely recommend this series. Love this author and it on kindle unlimited.
An intriguing start to a steamy trilogy that pits two men against each other. Camille has an obsessive ex named Grave who wants to keep and marry her. The only escape is to go to Grave’s enemy for protection or help getting rid of him permanently. Cauldron doesn’t like attachments or people or anything but money and power. When he and Camille make a deal for sex for protection....all sorts of lines get crossed. Lots of secrets, betrayal, revenge and twisted morals. Addictive story that leaves you wanting so much more.
Penelope has done it again with another outstanding start of a series! This series is based off of Cauldron and Camille. Camille wants free of Graves when she turns to one of our favorites Griffin 😍 When Griffin won't help her kill him because he's retired she is referred to Cauldron. Camille does everything trying to get his help even almost being shot. Luckily when she stowed away on his yacht she removed all the bullets from his gun. She manages to get him to agree to protect her from Graves. I really think Hugo the butler is a jerk! Cauldron takes Camille to a party at Fender and Melanie's house when Graves thinks he's going take Camille but our man Cauldron showed that wasn't going to happen. As the story goes on Cauldron opens up more and more to Camille. He tries to play hard but he's getting strong feelings for Camille. Comes out Graves is the half brother of Cauldron. Graves almost got Camille back by showing her the video and notes but Cauldron came before she actually left with him and punched him making him fall in the water. I can't wait til book 2 comes out to figure out if Cauldron makes it up to Camille for betraying her trust.
First of all, I have to say that I loved the cameo - he is my favorite antihero EVER!
This story starts with a bang, had a great intro between the main characters, has a butler that I want to get to know better, and a great rivalry (though not as good as Crow vs Bones - Bones was pure evil). There is a lot of smexy for those that need it but I skipped some of it to get to the meat of the story. The Camile/Cauldron/Grave situation kept me glued to this book not knowing what to expect next. The cliffhanger was totally unexpected and I cannot wait to see what happens next. Eagerly awaiting Better Man - the next part of the story.
Penelope Sky writes awesome stories and has fantastic characters. I am not crazy about the cliffhanger parts but I will always read her stories even though I know that there will be a cliffy coming. Her series are always absorbing but I have to admit the the Lingerie series is my favorite.
This book tell us the story of Camille, a girl who is hidding from her ex-lover, let’s say. He’s obssesed with her and don’t want to let her go even if doesn’t want to be anymore with him. She only wants to be free and find her true love. So she finds a way to escape from him and to keep him away, she only needs the protection from Cauldron (a rich and also dangerous man) even if they don’t stand each other, so the only way he agrees is asking for something in return…🫣
I devoured this book, it was awesome. I loveeeeee when she writes this kind of stories. I mean we can truly see that love isn’t the stronger emotion in this book, sometimes we are so accustomed with couples that fall in love and declare their love forever in the very first pages or book and this is not what happen here and i loved that. It’s so refreshing reading something like this.
I can’t wait for Better Man. Thanks to Penelope that we don’t have to wait a lot. 🤍
Ms. Penelope Sky is one of my all time favorite authors! Her new series is off the chart steamy and packed with danger and a few surprises that will keep you glued to your kindle reading as fast as you can and at the same time wishing you could slow down knowing you won't! Such a fantastic delima to have! We start off with Camille seeking out Cauldron to provide a service for her. She knows it will cost her. The question is, is she willing to pay that cost? Does she know the rules of the game being played? Is the price to high? What will he ask of her in order to do as she ask? No spoilers! Check it out and see for yourself. I can not wait to get my hands on the next book!
3.5 stars Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times, I'll stab you and let you bleed over the dinner table...
Liked the h and disliked the h at times, she just takes too much shit so easily and forgives just has easily. The H was hot and cold and the biggest asshole...
The title is lesser evil, but the h should have gone with "the devil you know"!
Got bored with all the sex scenes and skimmed them after the first 3 or 4...
To be blunt, I couldn’t stand Camille. The premise of a strong female lead is something I adore in books. I love when they show strength and tackle their own problems, but she just wasn’t necessarily willing to do that, nor was she willing to really respect the man who was trying to do it for her. Was he a saint? Absolutely not, but he made a deal to protect her and she was disrespectful and entitled. She made up a little bit for it by doing what she had to do to support herself and not let people shame her for it. I’ll say I wasn’t a huge fan of Cauldron either. This could’ve been a much better book in all honesty, but Camille ruined it for me. I’ll also throw in that I didn’t feel the chemistry between the MC and FMC. The plot twist towards the end really did surprise me. So I will give two thumbs up for that part. I didn’t really understand why Grave wanted her so badly. I thought there would be something she had done or for revenge or something, so I found the whole situation slightly ridiculous. The 🌶… now I know a lot of adult romance really plays it up. It gives much higher expectations for sex. Not every scene needs to be over the top or extreme, but in this book every spicy scene was the exact same and, to be quite blunt, boring. I ended up starting to skim through or even skip these scenes. Did I read the next book? Of course! Sometimes the first book is a flop, so I’m always willing to see if they can make up for it. Review for the second one will be posted soon!
Alright, imma need “Better Man” Book 2 of this series to hurry up and get here!
@penelopeskyauthor does what she does best, which is write the most deliciously morally corrupt anti heroes and make us fall in love with them. She always matches them with a strong woman, though. Camille is that and more! She’s street smart and had to do some questionable things to survive. She’s on the run from a man who won’t let her go.. who will kill to keep her. The only way to get ahead of him is to make a deal with a man worse than him.
I can’t believe I’m giving 2,5 to Penelope Sky… the story had some potential but the FC?!?! It’s okay to have a strong FC who doesn’t let shit slide.. I promise. I didn’t feel any chemistry between the 2 lead characters. This book was bad. Let us be honest I still can’t believe this is the person who wrote the series “Buttons”
I have to think about the rating. I feel like this author has a formula that works for her so she changes certain details but its basically the same premise. Hero is a real A hole, heroine in desperate need pf help or rescue from someone threatening her. Hero is emotionally unavailable and damaged but in the end and I mean in book 3 he will eventually open his heart to the heroine and they have a hea. That being said I liked the ides os him being a jeweler of sorts and his description in the book. The heroines story of being a woman of the night is nothing new. What i didnt understand was if the hero was such a bad ass then how did the bad guy keep getting on bis property? It sounds like he just walked up to the door! We dont get any details of how he gets there and keeps getting there. He shows up with mercenaries who also seems to just stroll up to the heroes door and holds his staff captive. Then he has a mega yacht full of guns but the heroine is able to find all the guns and ammo and throw them overboard. What kind of security does this man have? It didn’t male any sense. Then we find out the little twist which was cool and explained some things but why is he still able to stroll up the door like he was walking on the beach and took a new route? Why is the heroine obsessed with this fake pearl necklace .? Im continuing to book 2 and 3 but Im side eyeing the greater details of this book
I admit I've never read Penelope Sky before. It took me a minute to get used to it. In this book at least each section is like a mini story on its own. You end a chapter you move onto the next. It was a very blunt and in your face writing style that absolutely fit the characters perfectly. Both Camille and Cauldron really slowing gravitate towards each other. It's a slow build emotionally and a jump into the steam. The way the plot progresses really shows you the changes in their relationship through sex. You them both become people instead of a persona. It's a dark read. There are some definite triggers. Please read the book summary and click the link if you have triggers. There's violence. It fits in with Grave and Cauldron's lifestyles but can be hard to take. That being said it would honestly weaken the plot if you didn't see the depth of both men's darkness. Hugo the butler is hysterical.
Be warned cliffhanger. Second book out soon.
Definitely a five star read. I'll be reading Penelope Sky again. I can't believe this long to try her.
Penelope Sky has a penchant for writing the most awesome, broody, damaged, hate-to-love-em/love-to-hate-em alpha anti-heroes. Despite all of that, her ability to make the reader still root for her characters’ happily-ever-after is what distinguishes her as one of my favorite authors. Though the reasoning behind his grudge against Grave is understandable, Cauldron is by far Penelope Sky’s pettiest protagonist/anti-hero and I am here for it! In her efforts to escape an unsavory situation with Grave, Camille finds herself at Cauldron’s mercy, but is he really the lesser evil? That ending had me quickly clicking the pre-order button for the next book because phew!!! August 29, 2022 can’t come quickly enough for me. One of my top reads of the year so far!
