You may wonder what you would be taking away from this book. Well, the overall goal is to let you and other families know that you are not alone. First, receiving the news that your child is terminally ill is an experience that is out of this world. From that very moment, your body is emotionally paralyzed. Not only this but being told that there is no cure for your child`s diagnosis is a double blow to the heart. Secondly, the emotional impact on the family dynamic is significant. As a single parent, the questions going through my head was never-ending. How would I manage the present and the future? Oh my God! Why have you forsaken me? Caring for a special needs child introduced me and my family to a world that I had no idea existed. Very rarely do we ever hear people talk about this situation within the community, especially the black community. Caring for a special needs child is obviously an emotional roller coaster. You never know what the next day or hour will contain. For me, it was my sleepless nights. I refused to sleep at night in the fear that something might happen while I was asleep. So, I conditioned my mind and body not to shut down at night. Literally, I had to watch her sleep. I knew that I would never forgive myself if something happened while I was sleeping. To compensate, I would nap during the day when and if she could. This book is for families who are facing some of the same difficulties, and/or similar unfortunate life changing disasters. It's for the families who have dealt with stressors like I did and for single moms and dads everywhere who can benefit from a confidence boost. It`s for you who may need understanding and comfort, whether you dealt with substance abuse, mental illness, or other forms of adversities. If I can do it, you can, also!
