Wicked Walking

Rate this book
After killing a monster and dragging herself home from another world, Cassandra Reilly has become more than a witch - she's a hero. Sure, she can't sleep through the night and she's haunted by what she saw, but things should be looking up. Right?

Except something followed her out of the woods that day. And despite her best efforts - and the help of Merich, the handsome Fae Warden - Cass has failed to find any trace of it. Vanishing entities rarely bode well, but maybe no news is good news. And with a ticket out of town and her future on the horizon, Cass could really use a lucky break.

She's not going to get one.

I honestly didn’t think it was possible to get better than the first book in this series but Wicked Walking absolutely proved me wrong. This book is absolute perfection and I couldn’t have loved it more. It is everything I wanted from the sequel and MORE. It’s darker and grittier and bloodier and that’s just how I like my stories! This book just takes the series to a whole other level, I’m still a little mind blown by everything that happened and how it all ended. I wasn’t expecting any of it and I was just floored by it all! It was just so damn good, I desperately need more books in this series because I want to stay within the pages of the world Cain has created forever.

Wicked Walking was creepier than its predecessor with body possession, trauma, mystery, murder, and magic. There were many secrets and lies and unanswered questions.

The story is a lot of fun, and Cane’s writing is fast-paced, engaging, and easy to read. The fight scenes had me holding my breath, and the grim murder scenes left my heart racing.

But it did start to feel repetitive after a while. Our evil dark creature would kill someone, the family would do some crazy gamble to get rid of it, fail, Louisa would tell them to perform the rite and become the town’s Witch without answering any questions, they would yell and refuse to do it, Cassandra feels angry and guilty, and then repeat.

Cassandra did begin to frustrate me a bit in this one. She lashes out and gets trapped in her own thoughts. One of her closest friends was getting married, and despite his obvious doubts and second thoughts about the thing, she doesn’t console him or support him until after the disaster. I don’t blame her for disliking the town or the bride who treated her so poorly, but I thought she’d be more supportive of a boy she literally saves the life of.

Still, she is quite traumatized from the events in book one, and for good reason of course, so I understood where she was coming from, it was just a little frustrating to read.

I did adore the slow and natural way Merich and Cassandra confide in each other and fall for each other. I always love a relationship that starts as an amazing friendship and partnership with mutual trust that eventually turns into something more.

We end on another cliffhanger that had me screaming. I’m excited to see how the story continues!

A huge thank you to the author for proving me with a free ARC in exchange for a review.

With such an eerie ending from book one...Wicked Walking picks up where we last left our characters with a bang.

And just like book one, this one is a creepy tale full of wicked woods, bumps in the night, paranormal beings and non stop action. I really loved the increased mystery and romantic development in this one as well. As someone who doesn't really love horror, there is just something about this series that has me in a chokehold. I will say that this was creepier/more violent than the first...so I chose not to read this one close to bed time. It's underrated gem that I think an open minded reader would really enjoy!

I think this series is one of the most bingeable ones i've come across. The pacing is fantastic and never leaves you with a dull moment. They books are the perfect length...they give you just enough context and development and never drag anything out too long. The slow burn romance is so good. I love this love interest and just want more of him.

And then of course the ending has me wanting to pick up book 3 immediately! This series will be a total of FOUR books with the last one releasing very soon. If you like the supernatural, witches in the woods, creep factor, mysterious fae, slow burn romance, and quick reads you can't put down...i'd pick this one up!

After reading Lovely, Dark and Deep I was looking forward to reading Wicked Walking and I was not disappointed. Once again I was transported to the gorgeous and dark world of Fallow Creek where monsters are real and witches are tasked with needing to save their town. No pressure right?

I adore Cassandra as a character and love all of the dynamics explored between her and the other characters. She is brave yet vulnerable and ultimately very relatable.

There’s a bit more romance in this installment and I really enjoyed it because it was a slow burn and felt like a natural occurrence between the characters.
Overall it was the perfect mix of creepiness, mystery and romance!

I love this series and I cannot wait to see where it goes!

Thank you so much to the author for providing me with a free copy of Wicked Walking to read and review!

A huge thank you to the author, Claudia Cain, for sending me an Advance Copy of her book Wicked Walking (Fallow Creek #2) in exchange for a honest review.

Wicked Walking was one of my most anticipated release for this year and I absolutely enjoyed it more than the first book which is saying a lot cause I loved the first one so much.

Once again we are transported back to the dark and mysterious world of Fallow Creek where the story continues off with Cassandra together with the rest of the characters – Theo, Pen, Aunt Louisa and of course our very flirty fae Merich – in another mission to hunt the “Sixth Child” who followed her out of the veil when she rescued the missing children’s in book one.

Claudia Cain has a way of making you feel like you are inside the story. From the dark and vivid imagery to the very relatable set of characters, creepy plotline with body possession, mystery, murder and epic fight scenes which will have you in the edge of your sit wanting to either fight or run for your life.

Another cliffhanger for this second book which makes me crave the 3rd book so much more! I need a release date!

Thank you to the author for a gifted ebook.

SO SPOOKY AND GOOD! I thought book 1 was great, but this is even better! Wicked Walking takes the creep factor up to the next level and really toes the line between fantasy and horror, comparable to an early episode of Supernatural.

The mysteries and secrets of the past kept me on my toes, and I cannot accurately express how absolutely CHILLING the Child is.

I also LOVE the characters in this book and how their personalities jump off the page! Even when I don’t agree with all of Cass’s choices, I fully understand who she is and where she is coming from. And MERICH! I am so curious what comes next for this romantic subplot.

This story is atmospheric, suspenseful, and tense, with a cliffhanger ending that has me so excited to return to Fallow Creek once again.

If I could only recommend one book this year to satisfy your inner dark side, it would without a doubt be book 2 of @cainbooks Fallows Creek series, Wicked Walking.

From the dark and vivid imagery, enchanting characters and the utterly creepy plot, Wicked Walking is the perfect blend of magic and paranormal horror.

The story picks up on the heels of Lovely, Dark and Deep (5⭐ read) as Cassandra and her family are faced with a dark and otherworldly threat beyond anything they have ever faced before. With magic, body possession & some epic action scenes, I honestly have never been so encapsulated by every aspect of a story before!

Think...
Stranger Things / Charmed / and the darkness of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Sounds epic right??

This is definitely one for my thriller lovers who are open to something a little more intense, for what is at times terrifyingly gruesome. It had my pulse racing and my feet were itching to run (the end of chapter 12 😱). I also really enjoyed the element of a slow-burn romance that doesn't overshadow the main plot.

Seriously, Claudia Clain is a hidden gem who deserves so much more hype! Her writing is magic!
I devoured this book in what would have easily been a single sitting if only sleep did not get in the way. I'd even give it 6⭐ if you'd accept it.

I have now also bought all three books in Claudia's earlier vampire series and can't wait to get stuck into those.

Wicked Walking drops Aug 30!
Support an indie author go and go grab the series from Amazon. It's the perfect Halloween treat!

I am not even ashamed to say that these books really did give me nightmares 😂 but I do not regret it one bit. I finished Wicked Walking and I am so darn impressed like way more impressed than the book 1. After the way first book ended , I wasn’t sure if the second book would hold my interest to the same level but I was so very wrong, this book literally is wicked walking on two feet. It had me on edge while reading and even while I wasn’t because it has such darker undertones of eeriness without being outright horror or gore so it just sat in the back of my mind

Cass saved the missing children in the first book from a supernatural entity but she ends up recusing something else entirely as well, something that shouldn’t have escaped the depths of hell. A constant battle rages between this malicious evil and Cass and she loses a lot in the process , it is action packed and so very well done with placing mystery elements through out the book. The romance is so very subtle but made me soft on the inside every time, Yes! Merich is our new shadow daddy and everyone needs to read this book.

I felt super satisfied with the ending of this one but at the same time , I have the urge to dive into book 3 asap because I want to see how else can things go wrong than they already have been so far. @cainbooks (did a phenomenal job delivering this creepy goodness of a series, I can’t recommend this enough to PNR fantasy fans! This series truly deserves so much more hype

in this highly anticipated release, we return to the world of fallow creek. the creepy town where things just don’t go to plan. well, cass’ plan anyway. wicked walking doesn’t skimp on the creepiness, which is one thing i loved about lovely, dark and deep. i thoroughly enjoy a book that gives me goosebumps, makes me curl my toes, and has me peering over my shoulder every ten seconds.

in wicked walking, cassandra has decided to take it upon herself to save the residence of fallow creek. again. only this time, it’s from a creature that she unintentionally let loose in the world.

i found there was a little more romance in the sequel than in the prior book. i found this more believable and enjoyable as i found it gave the characters plenty of time to develop proper emotions for one another. (no insta love here!!)

and i can’t conclude this review without mentioning the cliffhanger. wHAT WAS THAT??? i now have to wait (for what feels like a long time!!!) to find out what happens next???? ms cain, how dare you????

with plenty of murder intrigue and supernatural creatures, wicked walking was a compelling sequel to lovely, dark and deep.

It is rare to find a sequel that has the intensity, tight plotting and pure magic of the first book - but Claudia Cain definitely achieves that feat in Wicked Walking. If I could give this book six stars, I would!

Following on the heels of Lovely, Dark and Deep, which was creepy without being horrifying, the second installment continues the story of the witch Cassandra, her Fae love interest Merich (drool) and the supernatural family that has watched over the fictional Fallow Creek for generations. This book not only follows the threads of the first perfectly, it also deepens the tensions between the characters, answers some questions and raises new ones, and breaks your heart at the end ... but in a good way.

When the story opens, Cass is both excited to embark on a new journey and frustrated by the loose ends of the past weighing her down. Though she is uncertain about her future, she is nevertheless ready to meet it ... until a haunting mystery pulls her up short. It seems one of those loose ends has come back to dog the Reilly family.

On top of dealing with that, Cass must contend with *actual* dogs, manage rapidly changing friendships, and try to unravel family secrets without tearing the people she loves apart. Oh, and there's romance, of course!

I would dearly love to spill it all here and spoil the book, given how much I enjoyed it, but I highly recommend you just read it instead. I can honestly say it was one of my favorite reads of 2022!

"It's only a light stabbing. I've had worse."

Wicked Walking is book two in the Fallow Creek series. It kicks off a few days after the events of Lovely, Dark and Deep (Fallow Creek #1). It is absolutely necessary to read Lovely, Dark and Deep before starting Wicked Walking.

Where on earth do I start? Claudia Cain is a magician! She took everything I loved about Lovely, Dark and Deep and turned it up to 11 for Wicked Walking!! How is that even possible? The only answer is that she's magic.

Completely atmospheric and immersive? Check.
Creepy and scary to the extreme? Check.
A completely relatable and badass FMC? Check.
A sarcastic swoon worthy magical MMC...with armor? Check.
Fantastic banter? Check.
Evil monster wreaking havoc around town? Check.
Complex family dynamics? Check.
Unsolved mysteries? Check.
Events that made me laugh, cry, gasp, yell out loud, smile, and gasp some more? You bet!

Cass is one of my favorite female main characters! Her reactions to scary situations and sacrifice are SO relatable. Her thought processes, her hesitation, her deflection with sarcasm and funny jokes, her PTSD, and desire to run away from it all...it's refreshing to see. I think it makes Cass even more endearing. Let's talk about my dude, Merich. Can he BE a more perfect book boyfriend? He's hilarious. He's attractive. He wears flannel and carries a sword. He has secret armor that he only wear on special occasions or to flirt with Cass. He trusts Cass to take care of herself, but worries anyway. He picks raisins out of cookies. He's a dream!

We meet some new characters in this story: Helen, the sibling who left town years prior, Ilian, another warden of the woods, and the Necromancer. I loved the complexity of Helen's return and the interactions with the various members of the family. Ilian's introduction was hilarious because of the impact it had on Merich. Loved all of these introductions and I thought they each brought something new and interesting to the story. We had less time with Theo in this one, which was sad because I enjoy him immensely, but the story needed to focus on other members of the family. Fingers crossed we get lots more Theo and the rest of these new characters in book 3!

Claudia writes in way that makes you feel like you're watching a movie playout while reading. The action is intense and exciting. The eeriness and wrongness leaps off the page to set the tone of the story. Think Stranger Things vibes but not set in the 80s and without child main characters. In this book there's silent figures standing outside looking in and the Edgar suit. Purposefully vague here, but it gives me the creeps just thinking about it.

Wicked Walking is everything! I could not put it down. I buddy read it with Sam, and we were constantly messaging back and forth in delight, terror, anxiety, and horror. It is a complete rollercoaster ride and the end left me on the edge of my seat wanting more!! I need book 3 immediately. I want to dive back into Fallow Creek, check in on my girl Cass, as well as Merich and Theo. They're all my faves! I can't recommend this series enough!!

"Witches don't bother him. Magic doesn't faze him. But he finds the idea of immortal swordsmen living in the woods unsettling."

"I'm well aware you can take care of yourself, but I'm finding it hard to think about anything but you and your safety."

"Right and good aren't always the same thing."

Wow.  *Insert emotional damage gif*

Wicked Walking is the second book in the Fallow Creek series. I thought Lovely Dark and Deep was absolutely amazing, and after that cliffhanger, I knew I was in for a wild ride in book two, but Wicked Walking was everything and more. More suspense, more mystery, more creepy, more confessions (Merich 👀), more blood, more gore, and more emotional damage.

In Wicked Walking, we get a closer look into the inhabitants of Fallow Creek and are introduced to new supernatural creatures. The magical concepts are so unique and interesting. Everything has a price, and magic is no different. We get to see the cost of magic and how creative witches have to be when magic demands balance.

Cass, my main squeeze, is such a realistic badass. I love that she never hides her fear and jumps straight into the action. Her anger and emotions drive her, which is why I love her. Everything she does is full of passion.

I was a little sad that Theo didn't get as much screen time as he did in Lovely Dark and Deep. His thirst for knowledge and books soothes my book-loving soul. He was still present but sat more on the sidelines in Wicked Walking. What we lacked in Theo time, we gained in quality time with Merich 👀.

Merich, Merich, Merich, Merich... his name will repeat in my head always because I love him. His snarky one-liners won over my heart, and he will remain there as a top-tier book boyfriend. He shows a different, softer side in Wicked Walking, which only deepened my love for him.

Thoughts I had while reading:
RUN!
STOP LOOKING AND RUN!
WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH THAT AXE
NOOOOOOOOOO!
DAMN IT LOUISA!
It's only a flesh wound!
This is sinister.
Hey , it's Lord Farquaad!

Wicked Walking had me screaming at Louisa, and crying by the end. I can only describe Claudia Cain's writing as mesmerizing and sinister and I am obsessed.

Remember how I mentioned Wicked Walking is more? The ending has an even more killer cliffhanger than Lovely Dark and Deep. This series is so good, and I need book three. If you are looking for a suspenseful and creepy witchy read with romance, but it's on the side-line, then you must try this series.

P.S. There is a sneaky little Shrek quote in a very serious area that made me snort.

𝑯𝒐𝒍𝒚 𝑯𝒆𝒍𝒍!!! I forgot how much I loved Claudia Cain's writing! 𝒉𝒐𝒘?! I remember 𝑳𝑶𝑽𝑰𝑵𝑮 the first book, giving it 5 stars, and stating it was one of my top reads of the year. But the love is 𝑹𝑬𝑨𝑳!

Not often is the second book as good as the first, but also 𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓!

Cain's writing is 𝒑𝒉𝒆𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍, switching between "story narration" and the story itself. It reminds me of the writing style of The Night Circus, but instead of a circus, it's a creepy forest with a 𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒚 creature. It's The Falconer meets Stranger Things, meets Practical Magic with a touch of Amityville Horror.

You can 𝑭𝑬𝑬𝑳 the story, the creep, and the characters. Just the way an amazing story should be.

How do I even tell you how much I 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆 this book? 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔. 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌. 𝒃𝒓𝒐𝒌𝒆. 𝒎𝒆.

𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒂! That ending!!! I knew it was coming at some point, but when they all started gathering.... 𝑰 𝑲𝑵𝑬𝑾 you were about to break the last part of me. It all fit together 𝒔𝒐 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍! Not to mention the hurt you inflicted on my heart not long before that. Honestly, my heart is 𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒍 racing, and it's hard to 𝒃𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆 after all that.

This book really had it 𝒂𝒍𝒍 though. I loved, I laughed, I raged, I was at the edge of my seat while my heart beat out of my chest, I was completely creeped out (yet loved it), 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒅.

The characters all have a special place in my heart and 𝑰 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆! Seriously, every character is so well fleshed out, and it's hard not to fall in love with them. Especially Cass, Will, and 𝑴𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒉 🖤 but really all of them, this story needed them 𝒂𝒍𝒍. Every messed up/loving piece of them.

Your writing and storytelling truly 𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒛𝒆𝒔 me. I 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘 that this book, like the last, will be a 𝒕𝒐𝒑 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅 of the year for me. There is no way around it!

𝒂𝒍𝒍. 𝒕𝒉𝒆. 𝒇𝒖𝒄𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈. 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒔!

Review: Wicked Walking 📖

We’re back in Fallow Creek, for the second book in the series and lemme tell ya - it’s a good one! I had chills throughout the entirety of this book and was thoroughly creeped out at the scenes Claudia has written. But that’s a good thing! It’s a consistent, gripping thrill ride! The writing in this book is once again so atmospheric and beautiful. Each scene is so real you can practically smell the earth and moss as you traverse the woods with our main characters. You can feel the terror as something stands across the yard at midnight, watching you with black eyes. You can feel the magic, conjured and rallied, as our main FMC fights a war between good and evil. But amongst the tension, we also get a few sweet spots and some good banter!

“𝑫𝒐 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒘 𝒖𝒑. 𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒏 𝒎𝒚𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇. 𝑫𝒐 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒘 𝒖𝒑 𝒊𝒏 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒘𝒐 𝒊𝒎𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒔”.

I loved seeing more of Merich and just what he’s capable of! He’s a character I def love getting to know more.

“𝑯𝒆 𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒆, 𝒂 𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒈𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒕. 𝑼𝒏𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆. 𝑳𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒍. 𝑩𝒆𝒂𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒖𝒍.”

“𝑰’𝒎 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒂𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝑰’𝒎 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒔𝒂𝒇𝒆𝒕𝒚”.

Ugh can we just 😍

Synopsis in my own words:
Something sinister followed Cass back to this world when she closed the door to that terrifying realm. And now, it seeks to bring down the boundary of Fallow Creek and unleash itself on the world beyond. But the entity is unpredictable and seems to know the witches next move before they do. Cass enlists her family and Merich, the fae warden of the woods, to once again seek out the evil lurking in their quaint little town and eradicate it for good. But they cannot fathom who will be lost and what will be destroyed along the way - and just how close it hits to home.

This book has
🍂 atmospheric writing and settings
🍂 spooky/creepy vibes
🍂 witches, magic, fae
🍂 strained family dynamics
🍂 battle between good and evil
🍂 cliffhanger ending

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

This is book 2 in the series. Book 1 is titled Lovely Dark and Deep. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this series if you want a good thriller with an awesome magic system!

One of my most anticipated reads of 2022 and easily a 5 star read. After being so blown away by Lovely, Dark and Deep, I was anxious to see whether Wicked Walking would hold up to Cain's magic on her first Fallow Creek book. It absolutely did. Cassandra only becomes more and more beautiful and interesting a character as our leading lady. She is one of the most realistic MCs I've ever read. She is both brave and afraid, powerful and unsure, deeply caring and fearful of her duties. The family dynamics continue to intrigue - and feel so relatable and real all the way through. The romance is SO well done and left me wanting even more. The central conflict (to Witch or not to Witch?!) is perfectly portrayed; there is no good choice and the author really treats each character's opinions and motivations with such patience and fairness that the reader can't help but feel for each of them. I saw the ending coming, but it didn't make it any less sweet (bittersweet? tragic?). And even though we conclude with some answers to the immediate danger of "The Child," we are left with bigger questions and secrets still undiscovered, making the stakes feel even bigger. Counting down the days until I can pick up book 3 in this incredible Fallow Creek story.

i started this book immediately after finishing “lovely, dark and deep” because i NEEDED to visit fallow creek again! this book was even better than the first, like many reviewers have said! it’s darker, bloodier, more intense, but with the same characters i loved from book one. i loved the creepy chase for the Sixth Child, the internal conflict cass has of becoming the witch or not, all the secrets louisa is keeping, and of course—THE ROMANCE. it was so well done, not overpowering but full of delightful banter and just a touch of angst. it was delicious.

and that ending????? i’m dumbfounded but in the best way. i kept turning pages, hoping it wasn’t really the end! i will read a thousand more books about the reilly siblings and fallow creek, and i cannot wait for the next book in the series.

Wicked walking is the second book in the Fallows creek series where we are once again enveloped into the dark atmospheric woods where new evil grips its claws into the town. Conjuring disturbing possessions & grotesque scenes that gave me goosebumps reading 💀

🍂𝐵𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑠𝑙𝑜𝑤 𝑏𝑢𝑟𝑛

🍂𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑑

Suspense is heightened as the stakes are increased with more for Cass to lose. She does however have a romance blooming amongst the decay & we see it woven between the gore & grim, brightening up the dark pages.

“𝐻𝑒 𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑘𝑠 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑚𝑚𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑒, 𝑎 𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑔𝑒𝑑 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑔𝑜𝑙𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑡.
𝑼𝒏𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆.

𝑩𝒆𝒂𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒖𝒍.”

The strong plot, loveable characters, sprinkle of romance, the eerie creepiness. It all becomes immensely clear that this story is simply not going to be over soon…Book 3 is going to unmasked some deeply sinister secrets & leave us with more questions then answers, however, I for one cannot wait!! 😻

Wicked Walking is the second installment in Claudia Cain's Fallow Creek series which picks up directly after the conclusion of the first book. Cass, the main character, is from a family of witches who are residing in Fallow Creek. She’s brave and I admire her for accepting her fears. She also has a strong sense of responsibility. After experiencing a terrifying experience when seeking for the missing children in Fallow Creek and fighting the creatures of the woods, she is currently on a new mission to hunt the mystery creature that followed her from the other world she discovered. A bunch of strange things are happening again in Fallow Creek and it doesn't help that people are still suspicious about her and her family.

This vibes in this book was a lot darker and chilling than the first one and there were faes, vampires and necromancers too! How cool is that?! The fighting scenes were incredibly vivid, which made it simpler to picture what was actually happening. However, the beginning was confusing primarily because I forgot almost every detail from the first book. I was even tempted to reread because I wasn't sure what was going on and it took me a bit to figure things out. I did, however, manage to carry on with it until everything became clearer, and I'm glad I did.

Sadly, I didn't feel as strongly about the characters now. Cass, on the other hand, remained a favorite of mine. Her character growth was fantastic as well. Merich remained as mysterious as ever and the romance between the two was very subtle so it didn't affect the flow of the story which I really liked. Yet, I found it difficult to relate to the side characters that much. Overall, it was a very thrilling and exciting read. It totally got me hooked from the very beginning with a level of intensity that kept me on the edge of my seat. The ending definitely left me wanting more, and I am beyond excited for what happens next.

Read this series if you love;
• Witches and Fae
• Magic and Spells
• Slow Burn Romance
• Dark and eerie atmospheric

Wicked Walking is the sequel to Lovely Dark and Deep, the 2nd book in Fallow Creek series.
The plot started out 2 weeks after the ending of the 1st book, with one problem solved another comes out when Cassandra (FMC) accidentally let something out from the other world and it's wreaking havoc in Cassandra's little town.

I really like the writing style, it describes the action scenes and atmosphere with such details it feels like I’m in Fallow Creek and inside the creepy forests. It's so hard to put down because the plot intrigue me until the end accompany with such loveable characters.

As for the romance, I'm so happy I finally got what I've been hoping to happen since the 1st book!
I hope we'll get more sweet and flirty scenes from our two main characters in the next book.

Not just some badass action scenes, it also has some emotional moments especially when entering Cassandra’s thoughts. She’s at war with herself because what she wants to do and what she needs to do is complete opposite.
This book is a lot more heart-breaking and the stakes are even higher compare to the first book.

Overall, this is a great sequel and addition to the series. It ended with another cliff-hanger which makes me wish I have the third book ready to pick up right now!
I’m really looking forward to read the next book because I need some answers and I really want to know what happens next!

⚠️ 𝐓𝐖: Contains death, violence, mild gore and depictions of injury, as well as mild body horror. It also includes mentions of suicide and depictions of anxiety.

I received an advanced review copy for free from the author (Claudia Cain), and I am leaving this review voluntarily!

When I read Lovely, Dark and Deep last year, I remember reading the end and thinking "oh no!" Well, this sequel is one continuous "oh no!" Things don't just get bad, they get really bad. And also really creepy. So obviously I loved it. We follow Cassandra again as she tries to figure out what on earth followed her through the veil at the end of the last book. One of my favorite things about this book was how funny and natural the banter between Cass and Merich is. It is exactly my type of humor. Second favorite thing is that it takes place right before Halloween. The whole small town + Halloween setting made the whole story so atmospheric; it was like I was there myself.

Another thing I loved was how this sequel answers the questions of the first book, while simultaneously raising more questions to be answered later. Second books need to clear up things from the first, but definitely need to stay mysterious enough for me to crave the third. Wicked Walking does that expertly. There are so many tiny details that I want answers of now.

Despite all the creepiness and high stakes, there are also many personal conflicts that Cass has to deal with. The least of which becoming the Witch or not. Furthermore, tensions between her and her family increase as secrets are being spilled. Cain presents this issues realistically and really shows that there are no straightforward answers here. The ending also completely blew me away. Even though I know that Cain doesn't pull her punches, I didn't see this particular ending coming. But it only makes me want to read the third book asap!

Thanks to Claudia Cain for providing an ARC!

I need the third book…DESPERATELY!
5 stars!

I am very lucky and grateful to have been approached again by Claudia Cain to read an ARC of her sequel - Wicked Walking - which continues to tell the story of Cassandra and her Witch family in Fallow Creek. I thoroughly enjoyed its predecessor, Lovely, Dark and Deep so I was super excited and keen to dive back in!

As soon as I began reading the first few lines I was sucked straight back into the story. These past 24 hours have been a whirlwind. What a reading treat this book is; one I highly recommend.

Claudia is a very talented writer. Many times I was on edge, anxious, amused or very emotional. If you’re looking for a series with mystery, magic and horror, this book is definitely the one for you. The description of scenes, the setting, the dialogue…I am just so very impressed. The writing really sets the tone and brings the atmosphere Claudia sets out to make.

Plus I adore Merich and Cass. Swoon.

I would like to thank Claudia for giving me the opportunity to read her ARC. I cannot wait for the next book to see what happens next!

I thought book one was good. And I think this one was even better. It is written so well and I am captivated by this really creep story and all of the characters involved. I liked the progression of the initial plot and the expansion of ideas surrounding The Child. There were many super spooky moments with the possessions and lights flashing and things showing up in the dark. It’s a book that I felt like I needed some lights on to keep going.

I liked Cass a lot more in this book too. She still holds to her wants, and also strives to solve the problems before her. I LOVED that we got more Merich content (sub plot of romance that I am adoring). And I still love Theo. There’s some good twists in here too that I was surprised by and have been wondering where in the world things will progress to next.

This has been a great urban fantasy series so far. I’m hopeful to possibly see new locations and characters be mixed in with the next book.

Overall audience notes:
- Urban Fantasy
- Language: a little
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: high
- Trigger/Content Warnings: death, mild gore and depictions of injury, mild body horror, mentions of suicide and depictions of anxiety

“He looks like summer incarnate, a creature forged from gold and heat. Untouchable. Lethal. Beautiful.”

Cain delivers yet another beautifully haunting tale woven with magic, suspense, and creatures that will give you goosebumps and keep you up at night. Wicked Walking picks up right where Lovely, Dark and Deep ends, with an otherworldly entity following Cassandra back into Fallow Creek, leaving bodies in its wake as it attempts to escape. Cassandra is still trying to avoid taking on the responsibility of becoming The Witch of Fallow Creek but is met with devastating consequences for wanting more out of life. With help from the handsome Fae Merich and her family, Cassandra must try and defeat the Sixth Child, who is wreaking havoc in Fallow Creek and causing issues closer to home. Long-hidden secrets will out as tensions rise, and old prices must be paid. With terrifying possessions, gory fight scenes, and a slow-burn romance, Wicked Walking has everything I love and more. Cain uses her writing to paint such a haunting picture that left me begging after each chapter to know what happened next.

Wicked Walking is the second book in the Fallow Creek series. Despite saving the children from the void in the woods, something else followed her out - something that is now terrorising the town. Cassandra wants nothing more than to leave Fallow Creek, but she knows that she has to find the Sixth Child and resolve this once and for all.

If possible, Wicked Walking adds another layer to the creepiness of the first book. This one introduces bodily possession to the mix, where you don't know if they are really there or if it is something else peeking out from behind those eyes.

Cassandra is still traumatised from the events of book one, and the book definitely is not any kinder to her. Still struggling from what happened, she leans on Merich as a confidant and to help her.

I can't say too much about the plot without giving too much away, but it was excellent and I really enjoyed it!! I really want to know what's about to happen next after that cliffhanger!

Oh, and there is also the slowest of all slow burns trickling along in the background!

Thank you to the author for providing me with e-arc, all opinions are my own.

Wicked Walking picks up after that stomach dropping twist at the end of Lovely Dark and Deep, the effects of which are reverberating throughout the family and the small town community.

In this one we have a body-possessing dark creature on the loose. The story felt even darker to me than the first one, with frantic fights scenes and confronting murders. Main character Cass's mental state is grim and unraveling, and family relationships are fraught.

Merich though *heart eyes*. Love him!! So glad he had more presence in this one and we got to know him a bit better.

This one ends on a cliffhanger again and I admit I'm not sure about it this time. The event the final sentence hints at would render a lot of the most traumatic events of this book avoidable and pointless? Which would be frustrating to me. But I'll have to see how it unfolds in the next instalment!

Overall though I definitely enjoyed being back in this dark and witchy world with these characters and I'll be hanging out for the third book!!

Thank you, Claudia, for my early copy of Wicked Walking!

I just have to say...I love this series so much. If you're looking for something that reads like you're watching Vampire Diaries or Secret Circle...you need this series in your life. It's the perfect adult blend of Stranger Things, Raven Boys, and Vampire Diaries if they were written by a horror author.

This book had everything I could ever hope for: relatable characters, a group of siblings that would do anything for each other (even if they are a little dysfunctional), hot fae warriors, an atmospheric creepy small town set in the woods, dead bodies, missing people, monsters, possession, and ALL THE WITCHES.

I will say that this book does have some serious gore, so if that's not your thing, you might want to pass on this, but if you're looking for your first step into spooky & creepy stories - before you're brave enough to grab that Stephen King book - I highly recommend Fallow Creek.

Did I cry? Yes. Did I gasp? Yes. Am I anxiously awaiting book three of this series? Yes.
