Juliette “What do you have against hockey? You don’t believe all those stereotypes do you?” he says. “Suppose I do. Then you get the picture,” I say. Not even the hot new guy with the killer body, contagious laugh, and a ridiculous dimple in his strong chin--cliche much?--can convince me otherwise... Jason I have no business taking an interest in a woman bent on believing hockey is the sport of neanderthals and all pro athletes are spoiled puck heads. Her words, not mine. I can't stand her no matter how smoking hot she is. There's no excuse to her ignorant attitude. But tell that to my over-active dick whenever she's around--which is always since she's shooting the documentary.
How do we go from mortal enemies to obsessed, spending more time tangling the sheets than is healthy for our bodies or our careers?
He does indeed have pluck! Jason is young and very excited to be called up to play for the Boston Brawlers. His whole life is about playing hockey professionally so this means everything to him or at least it does until he meets Juliette. She is at the Boston Brawlers facility because she's been hired to do a documentary about the team trying to win The Stanley Cup. The problem is that she thinks hockey is meaningless and unimportant and all hockey plays are just little boys living out a fantasy (yeah, she kind of has a bad attitude). They aren't supposed to be in a relationship because he is her subject but they just can't stay away from one another. What happens when their fling starts to take on elements of an actual relationship? Can they find a way to make it work after the season is over?
Jason. Jason. Jason. He is very young and kind of suffers from tunnel vision. As the story develops it becomes understandable why he is so focused on his dream to play in the NHL. The author really showed how Jason's drive and determination could lead to him having real issues if his dream doesn't work out. It would be interesting to revisit him in 5 or 10 years and find out where he ended up. Hopefully, he'll have plan b in place by then! Juliette is kind of a b**** at the beginning of the story. She has reasons to be cold and detached. As the story progresses, she is given the chance to learn about a part of the world she was never exposed to and maybe even learn that everyone has an important story to tell. While he shows a growing maturity, she learns to relax and enjoy life a little more (after all, you don't have to live your life filming war zones to bring value to the world).
I really wanted a "conclusion" to Juliette's family background story. I know that wasn't necessary to complete the love story between Jason and Juliette but it would have been nice if Juliette's mother got to have her say about why Juliette's parents divorced. I just wanted more. Jason gets the whole of his dream during the course of the story but I wanted him to finally see that hockey isn't the end all be all. I wanted him to have a future dream.
This is a contemporary romance that takes place in Boston. There is hockey and it's integral to the story. This is part of the Boston Brawlers series and I think it's best to have read the other stories in the series BUT this can be read as a stand-alone. Characters from prior stories do make appearances in this story. I will definitely read more from this series and this author. Disclosure: I am a fan of this author and read pretty much everything she writes.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
He Has Pluck follows Jason who has recently been promoted from the Boston Brawlers farm team up to the NHL. As well as the pressure of playing at NHL level he also gets the news that he will be the subject of a new documentary about the team filmed by Juliette. When they meet for the first time the attraction is instant, but with Juliette's hatred of professional athletes can Jason persuade her to think otherwise?
I really enjoyed this hockey romance. Jason was swoon worthy and I loved his character. He didn't give up on Juliette and the chemistry they shared was amazing. Jason was really humble and he opens up to Juliette about his history, which in turn helps her bring down her fortress of walls. Juliette at times was frustrating, but getting to know her better helped explain to me why she was that way. I really enjoyed their ending and I look forward to more from this series.
This book can be read as a standalone, but there are characters from previous books in the series.
Juliette is a hard core journalist, and has been assigned to a sports documentary. To say she despises this assignment is putting it mildly. The focus of the documentary is on the rookie that was brought up from the minors to help the Boston hockey team get to the Stanley Cup. Jason the rookie & Juliette do not mesh at all. It’s intense hatred Juliette feels for Jason but Jason has different feelings about her. This book brings many different aspects of life into the read, it is done so well. I could not put the book down. Stephanie has another great hockey read on her resume.
New to the NHL, Jason is focused on making his hockey dreams come true. As the new guy, the team thinks he's perfect to provide a fresh perspective on the franchise's drive to win the Cup in a documentary. Juliette, the filmmaker, is nothing like he expected. She's intelligent and driven but has a huge chip on her should and an icy demeanor. She's gorgeous and tempts him to set aside his rules to live and breathe hockey.
The pair share a mutual attraction that they both fight, but for very different reasons. Jason is so close to his life's goal and doesn't want to mess it up with the distraction that is Juliette. He also isn't sure that he can put anyone else above his hockey dream and doesn't feel that would be fair to his partner. He's a sweet, hardworking guy whose intense focus and athleticism have helped him to succeed. Juliette, however, is a bit of an immature mess of an individual. She, too, is intelligent and driven. To succeed as a documentary filmmaker, she has put herself in life-threatening situations. She's tough and dedicated to her work. However, she has convinced herself that she can't let anyone in and that she should be alone. This leads her to treat everyone around her badly - she's cut off communication with her mother, has few lasting relationships of any sort and she uses sarcasm, anger and her cool demeanor to keep everyone at a distance.
While I found Jason sweet and strong and willing to take a chance, I didn't particularly like Juliette's character. The way that she runs hot and cold with Jason, some of the downright childish and nasty things she says and does to push him away combine to make her less than a sympathetic character in my opinion. Frankly, I don't see why he continues to pursue her, as her moments of honesty and vulnerability are few and far between.
Three stars for this hockey romance.
This is an honest, voluntary review of an ARC of the story.
Honestly, not my favorite hockey from Queen. He Has Pluck had its moments, it was cool. But I found myself having trouble getting through it and it took my awhile to finish this.
Juliette and Jason are coming back from life changing events. Juliette is an award winning documentary film maker who is coming back from Columbia after a complicated and deadly situation. Jason is an up and coming hockey player who was finally called up to the Boston Brawlers to help them make their way to the Stanley Cup. Juliette and Jason have bigger things to focus on but all they can think about is each other. They know they have careers to keep in mind, but they can’t fight the attraction and after awhile they stop fighting it. Besides working on keeping their careers in good standing, they’re also fighting their own personal demons when it comes to this new relationship.
Part of why I feel like I struggled with this was because it just felt like there was just so much going on. The amount of backstory and baggage they had on top of the careers they were trying to keep was just overwhelming to read. It just felt like a lot. There were times I was mentally yelling at Juliette. Her “Ice Chip” persona, while cute at first, was just rude after awhile and off putting. I enjoyed Jason’s character a little more but I felt he was kind of irresponsible as a new player for a team like the Brawlers. He was good on the ice but he wasn’t 100% focused and that kind of bothered me. I’m not sure what else I needed differently but this book just didn’t do it for me like some of Queens other books did. Oh well. I’d still recommend this for those keeping along with the series.
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
I liked the overall story but had issues with Juliette. Her life experience suggested she was older than Jason, however her behaviour suggested she was the same age, especially since she seems to lack impulse. Near the end of the book we learn she's twenty-seven; it would've been nice to have this information sooner.
My other issue with her is that I don't believe her dedication to her career; it seems like an excuse or lip service whenever she mentions prioritizing work over personal relationships. She's all pouty that she's been assigned a hockey documentary, has been advised to stay away from the hockey players, should know from recent experience that getting personally involved with her subjects is a bad idea and says she wants to do a good job so she can get back to the projects she wants to do. Nevertheless, she essentially jumps into bed with Jason within a couple of days of meeting him, throwing caution --and her professional reputation-- to the wind (Even if they had shown a few days more resistance to their attraction, I would've bought it). In addition, multiple times, she chooses spending the night with Jason over doing her job and editing what was filmed that day.
Finally, I can't believe Jason and Juliette are naive enough to think no one knows what they're doing.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Jason is the new guy in a NHL team, trying to win the Stanley cup and earn himself a contract. Juliette has been assigned to do a documentary about the team, and Jason's journey in particular. The project feels like a punishment to her as she despises athletes and her ambition is to do gritty, dangerous investigative journalism in some adventurous far-away corner of the world. The thing is, she made some very bad life choices on her previous filming adventure and her boss thinks she needs to prove herself doing something safer now. Juliette is not supposed to hook up with a subject she's filming. But of course they do, and they are each other's dirty secret for a while, and then they have to figure out if there is a future for them.
I enjoyed the writing and the overall flow of this story but the first sex scene felt a little too fast to me given that they both had conflicting motives including both emotional hang-ups and career-related reasons to resist the attraction. A little more waiting would have built up the tension. As it is now, the characters came across a bit weak-willed as they give in to the temptation. She's like, this might destroy my career but you're hot so I've got no choice.
I voluntarily reviewed a Hidden Gems copy of this story.
This book was a great story! I loved it from beginning to end. Jason is called up from the AHL to the NHL. He’s the “New Guy” so has a lot to prove. He’s all young, and has a lot of baggage about his dads life and death and never making it this far. Juliette us a journalist. Made a huge mess and mistake but killing a man trying to kill her in another country on assignment. She is to do a documentary on this hockey team as a way to do something low key after her last experience. She’s so cold to Jason (at first) he calls her “ ice chip” for the chip on her shoulder. The attraction between them is off the charts hot. I often find Juliette’s attitude hurtful and hard to take. I really don’t always like her “ball busting” persona but I did love the story and Jason’s sweet fragile heart. He’s 21, she’s 27. So a little older woman younger man vibe as well. Over all a great story. Will love reading the next one!
Jason gets a chance of a lifetime, to play for the NHL Jason is young, strong and very excited to play for the Boston Brawlers. Playing Hockey and winning the Stanley cup has always been Jason's dream, it his whole world until he runs into Juliette. Jason never expected Juliette to turn his world upside down because her icy attitude is not supposed to excite him. Juliette is having trouble getting work after what happened in her last project in Columbia and reluctantly agrees to do a documentary on the new Brawler player. Juliette loathes all sprots player's, "sports is not a real job" so when her heart betrays her, she does all she can to ignore what her body heart and craves. This is a cute story of choices we make and the consequences of our actions. This story is a tug of war between choosing their careers over what their hearts most desire, which will win. Both Hockey boy Jason and Ice Chip Juliette can lose their careers if they choose to follow their hearts.
If you want a sexy hockey book, this is your book. Juliette and Jason get off on the wrong foot. He's just been called up from the AHL (Hockey minor league) to the NHL to help in the team's drive to the Stanley Cup. She's been hired to make a documentary on the Boston Brawler's fight for the cup - with a focus on the new guy - Jason.
Although they don't like each other, they are both extremely interested in the other sexually. And each has family issues that have formed their personalities and the way they see relationships.
I thought the filming of the documentary was an interesting side story and I would have enjoyed reading more about that part of the story.
The sex scenes are explicit and the language isn't tame, so I recommend this book for mature audiences. I was provided with an advance reader copy by the author. This is my honest review.
Jason is finally being aloud to live his big dream playing for the Boston Brawlers. Jason is fun flirty and eager to please but when you make your goal your only achievement playing Hockey it could end badly if you don't have a second life plan. Juliette is doing a documentary on hockey only one problem she thinks hockey guys are big dumb boys with to much testosterone and puck bunny's. Juliette is over the top judgy and rude but she dose calm down when things heat up between her and Jason there biggest problem is there not supposed to be together and there both hyper focused on there careers other wise this book wasn't a bad read but I definitely feel the need to read other books in this series.
I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book via HiddenGems and this is my honest review.
Being the recent call-up to the big leagues, Jason has something to prove. Juliette is a photo- journalist coming off of a dangerous story and needs a refresher job before returning to the field. Jason’s new team has hired Juliette to film their new commercial and are using Jason as the face. Juliette has no respect for hockey players. Her and Jason clash immediately. And then they don’t.
I can’t get enough of Stephanie Queen’s work. I have never read anything by her that I didn’t like and this book didn’t disappoint. I like that “He has Pluck” went a bit different than some of her other ones, but I couldn’t read it fast enough. Jason and Juliette had this friction in the story that made it worth reading. I highly recommend it.

This is Book 8 in the Boston Brawlers Hockey Romance Series by this author. It is an enemies to lovers romance between Jason and Juliette. These characters are very different but likable, the connection strong, the chemistry combustible, and the unique plot makes for an enjoyable read. It is a love story with enough drama, steam, conflict, and enough action, twists and turns, plus engaging secondary characters to keep the reader interested. A page turner with a happy ending. It can be read as a standalone but you enhance your reading pleasure if you read the other books in the series.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Hidden Gems and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
It's hard to like a story when you don't like the heroine. Juliette is snobby, pretentious, and thinks she's better than everyone, especially hockey and hockey players. She has been "demoted" to making a lowly documentary of the Brawlers' playoff run. Usually there is that redeeming moment of a bad character that changes your mind about them but her 'moment/s' that I guess are supposed to soften her aren't very soft or convincing. I just couldn't like her at all. Jason is not so perfect either. He's like a horny young guy that can't keep his junk down whenever Juliette is around. However, I at least liked him better than her. The story itself I liked, I just couldn't get with the characters.

It was good. Jason is the new guy on the Boston Brawlers. His first task is to be the focal point for the team's documentary on their push for the Stanley Cup. The documentary is being filmed by Juliette. Their is an instant attraction between them but Juliette is trying to repair her career after an incident in Columbia. They are both feeling the pressure. They strike up friendship that leads to a fling.
The book is written well. It isn't a insta-love book. It is a sports romance with a reverse age gap(Juliette is older than Jason).
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. This is the 6th book in the Boston Brawlers Hockey series. Each book can be read as a standalone. Jason is the new guy. He's just been called up and the Brawlers have high hopes for him to help them win the Stanley Cup. Juliette is an award winning film journalist but her newest project is so beneath anything she has ever done. Following a bunch of hockey players around. I have loved this series from the beginning but this book was probably my favorite so far. It had just the right ount of banter and tension between these two. Can't wait for the next book.
As with all the books in this series, it is a stand-alone. However, you do get a better connection with the characters if you read the previous books. The Boston Brawlers are a tight-knit team, yet they welcome their new players. Jason is one of those new players. He has just been brought up from the AHL to the NHL. He has a lot to prove. Juliette is fresh off an assignment that went bad. She resents having to cover the documentary on the Brawlers. Jason and Juliette hate one another, but they also have an instant attraction. Which emotion will win? It took me a while to connect with these two characters. But it was worth sticking with it.
He’s new to the NHL. Jason Tansem has been called up from the AHL team to the Boston Brawlers to finish the season, and hopefully the playoffs. He’s understandably nervous. But that feeling is magnified when on his first day he meets the videographer the team has hired to do a documentary on him! No pressure, right? And the videographer is the hottest woman he’s ever met! But she’s off limits, and she doesn’t even like hockey? A fun story about a most unlikely couple with lots of hockey, hot hockey players, and an abundance of steam! I loved it!
Juliette is a videographer who is trying to redeem herself after a poor decision on a previous job led to some serious consequences. Jason is trying to live out his dream now that he's been moved up to the NHL. Juliette is charged with making a documentary about the team, focusing on their new rookie, as they fight for a chance at winning the Stanley Cup. What neither counted on were the sparks that flowed between the two. Plenty of ups and downs for these two as they battle their own inner demons.
This is an enemies to lovers with a HEA ending. Jason is brought up from the farm team to the NHL Brawlers. It’s been his goal and dream in life. Juliette is a videographer who has had a bad experience on her last job. They come together when she is making a documentary of the team and he is the lead player. They have an attraction to one another but she hates professional athletes in general. He doesn’t give up and starts to bring down her walls. I loved reading this book just like all the others in this series. Looking forward to the next one.
Juliette has to make a documentary on a hockey team to help her recover from a bad experience at a previous assignment. Problem is she has no interest in hockey or sports for that matter and thinks the athletes are over rated. Jason has just been called up to the NHL from the farm team and has a lot to prove to secure his position on the team in the future. There is zero room for messing up. But he's attracted to Juliette and he begins to wear her down. They have to spend a lot of time together, can they really avoid each other??
He's 21, just got his big break in pro hockey. She's 28, already a world-class videographer but due to that unfortunate incident in Colombia, temporarily banished stateside to document his last few hockey games of the season. Both have their demons, and when they come together, their steamy++ attraction suggests the connection goes deeper than lust. But can she overcome her cynicism and let love in? A very hot read.
Oh my...my heart swooned a bit in this one. It's not often a book has an older woman but I'm loving it. The tension between these two was fire! They could definitely melt the ice in the rink. I love them together and I love that we get glimpses of all the Boston Brawlers.
