Movie night with my cat was not how I expected to spend Friday night. But neither was tripping over a dead body. Who needs a date when you've got all of this going on?
Maddie is really just trying to sort out her life, but that will have to be put on hold while she sorts out who left a dead body in her yard. Maddie and her BFF Chloe are scooping ice cream, baking cookies, and searching for clues to who killed a former schoolmate. The cantankerous local detective is trying to ward them off from the murder, but they're on a mission, and they will not stop until they find the killer. Or the killer finds them.
Maddie Bradford has been back in Lilac Bay for a month now. She and Oliver, her cat, are settling in to watch TV, but it looks like the TV people figure everyone is out on a date Friday night, so the selection of movies is pretty boring. Her windows open to the cool breeze, Maddie heard a noise outside. She couldn’t see anything and went back to the couch when a voice said, “No.” Going out on the front step, she glanced around but saw nothing. The bushes between her house and a neighbor’s shook and she heard someone run away down the street. She tripped over something in the dark. The pile of clothes was actually a dead body with a knife stuck in his chest! And she recognized Jim Allred who had been a couple of grades behind her in school.
The next day at work, Maddie told Chloe and Cookie what happened. Savannah came in and said her cousin was murdered and Maddie and Chloe agree to investigate to find the killer. The local detective, Noah Grayson, is trying without success to keep them away from the case, but they won’t stop until they find killer. Will the killer come back and try to silence her? Will she and Chloe track down who did this?
This was a fast-paced, well-written story with excellent characters and an intriguing plot to pull the reader’s attention immediately into the story line. I enjoyed reading the book, observing the interactions of the characters, and trying to figure out who committed the crime. Grab your copy and see whether Maddie and Chloe are successful in their pursuit.
Another fun adventure with Maddie and her bestie Chloe. When a guy was killed outside Maddie's house, she thought it was literally a little too close to home and started on her quest to find whodunit since she was worried they might come after her next. I really love Estelle's character! She cracks me up always getting a different chocolate ice cream treat and having the latest gossip, not to mention an excellent memory from when she worked as the town librarian. I'm enjoying the grownup Nancy Drew vibes I'm getting from the series. Maddie and Chloe are quite the pair of sleuths, lol.
I was never sure exactly whodunit as far as the murder went. That was wrapped up nicely but once again Maddie had to deal with a crazed killer. The side mystery wasn't quite wrapped up, but the detective had a handle on who to watch. I'm eager to read the next book centered around the 4th of July!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC provided by the author via BookSprout, and my opinions are my own.
As part of my summer of read whatever you want, I'm diving full-force into reading all the Kathleen Suzette mysteries that I want, as quickly as I want to read them.
I had already read the first one of this series some time ago, and I loved it! I was excited to read another one from the series, especially since it has a summer theme and it's soon to be summer here! (Even though, admittedly, I'm already in a fall sort of mood, but that's beside the point.)
I loved this one. I really think that the longer Kathleen Suzette writes, the better her voice gets. All of her books are enjoyable, but I feel like they get better and better as you move through the series and watch her grow as a writer.
This is a wonderful little summer cozy with a side of cookies and ice cream. As usual, I didn't guess the killer ahead of time, and I was actually quite surprised by the twist. I highly recommend these cozies!
Maddie was home with Oliver when she heard some noises outside her house. When she went to check it out, she stumbled upon a dead body. When Maddie arrived at work the next morning, she told Chloe and Cookie what happened when Savannah arrived. Savannah mentioned that her cousin had been murdered and he was the body Maddie found next to her house in the bushes. Maddie decides she needs to investigate the murder and Chloe joins her. Will Maddie and Chloe discover who the killer is? Why would someone do this. Join Maddie and Chloe as they figure out the clues.
The mystery has so many twists and turns it keeps you guessing till the end. This is very well written murder mystery with engaging characters and a very interesting plot. I highly recommend it to all mystery readers.

Once again we find Maddie embroiled in a murder investigation. This time the murder of Jim Allred happened at her house. She was watching a movie with her cat Oliver when she heard noises outside her window. She went out to check and tripped over Jim's body, he had been stabbed. She had gone to school with Jim though he was a few years behind her class. When she went into work at the creamer the next morning, Cookie told her Jim was her co-worker Savannah's cousin. Maddie and Chloe started asking questions around town. Meanwhile Maddie also got video footage of what may have been burglars casing a house. She finds out who killed Jim (total shocker!) and gives Detective Grayson the video for him to follow up.

The pacing was really as it hopped right on in to the mystery. As Maddie investigated more and more clues came into focus, happening at an intriguing pace. It kept my interest. I really enjoyed.
Still looking forward to more interactions with Maddie and the detective, it just a really interesting and intriguing dynamic. It was fun in this one as they bounced off one another.

Another great addition to this fun summer reading set!
Another fine addition to this light fun little summer reading mystery set. Just enough who dun it to keep you occupied for a little bit, not not scary enough to invoke too much adrenaline. Lol fun, breezy and easy reading. Lol Give it a try.
Another delightful visit to the ice cream shop. Yes, I am craving ice cream once again. Charming series. Can, of course, be read as a stand-alone. Clever mystery that seems obvious, but think again. Thanks to the author for providing a copy via Booksprout. My review is voluntary.
Maddie Bradford was home on a Friday night watching TV with her cat Oliver. She heard a noise and went to investigate only to trip over the dead body of Jim Allred. Who killed him and why? We have many suspects, but who did it. A fun read.
I really enjoyed reading this second book in the series. Light cozy mystery with great characters and setting. Would love to see some ice cream and cookie recipes.
