Secret Shifters Next Door #3

Wolf Detective Next Door

Help—my new neighbor is dangerously hot and I think he might bite…

My publisher thinks that the small, quiet town of Lily Valley is the perfect place to cure my writer’s block. But even she couldn’t have known about the real-life alpha hero living right across the hall.

Miles is like a character straight from the pages of one of my romance novels. Tall, dark, and mysterious, the private investigator is built to perfection. He’s gruff and obviously the strong, silent type, and I know an innocent virgin like me is way out of his league.

It doesn’t stop me from trying to seduce him, though. At first, he seems reluctant to get to know me, but when circumstances throw us together, I learn that he has a protective streak. And for reasons I don’t yet understand, he thinks I’m in danger.

I’m beginning to wonder if Miles could be my chance for a real-life happily ever after. Unless he turns out to be someone I don’t expect…

This has been a good series. A bit long, but still good. This author has a great sense of humor. I found places to laugh out loud in every book. It’s a new storyline for me. I’ve not read one like this before. I also liked how these stories All intertwined and stay that way throughout the series. Well thought out and enjoyable. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥/5

Celine is a shy, not-so-outgoing author who needs a vacation to get over her writer's block. She decides on a random place called Lilly Valley. Little does she know choosing this spot will be one of the best decisions she makes because not only does she get over her writer's block but she also happens to find her hot next door neighbor, Miles. But little does she know that Miles is a wolf shifter who has had a curse placed upon him. Will her growing feelings for this man be enough to help him break the curse or will she end up with a broken heart or worse?

I devoured this book in less than two days! I loved the characters! I especially found myself empathizing with Celine because I too am also a shy, weird, introvert who loves to be creative and has also dreamed of becoming a writer one day. I also happened to love how loyal Miles is to his "pack" aka his friends let alone romantic and patient when it comes to Celine. I think anyone who wants to read about a hot wolf and quirky human getting together should buy this book immediately and they won't want to put it down. I can't wait to see what happens next for this pack!.

Best of the series so far

I absolutely adored Celina! From the moment she “ding-ding-ditched” Miles’s door to leave him cookies and described it as “the most ballsy thing” she’d ever done I was enamored of her. She was so adorable and relatable (as a fellow introvert and author who would rather live in her head & living room). Miles was so sweet and patient, truly swoon-worthy.

As for the over-arching story of the hunters and their mysterious benefactor, things really ramped up in this installment. The final confrontation promises to be epic and I can’t wait.

Miles and Celina's Story . . .

Celina Santos has writer’s block, so her agent recommends going somewhere to relax and let her creative mind take over. So she closes her eyes and sets her finger down on a map to find the small, quiet town of Lily Valley. It just feels right.

Her neighbor is Miles, tall, dark, mysterious, and a well-built private investigator. As he brushed her hand, helping her with a bag of groceries, his wolf went crazy. And she got all flustered when he introduced himself and she ended up slamming the door in his face. But inexplicably, she got some awesome ideas for her book and within 20 minutes had written almost 3,000 words which completed her usual daily word count goal! Was Miles her muse? To calm herself down, she baked chocolate chip cookies but must have doubled the recipe. She put a dozen in a container with a note to Miles, put it in front of his door, rang the bell and dashed back into her apartment. Watching out her peephole, she saw him pick up the container and read her note. With a smile, he looked right at her peephole as if he could see her there! Then he went back into his apartment.

Eventually, after all the shy encounters as they kept bumping into each other, Celina invited Miles to her apartment for a home-cooked dinner. The next night, he invited her for dinner at his apartment. His security team was looking for a dangerous Hunter and he began to suspect Celina’s new friend, Felicity, might be a danger. He doesn't like her or trust her, and with good reason. Will he be able to protect Celina without revealing what he is until the time is right? Will she want to stay with him and become his mate if they survive?

Review of Wolf Detective Next Door
By Roxie Ray

The Most Beautiful Man She Has Ever Seen …

This third book in the “Secret Shifters Next Door” series by “Roxie Ray” is about a writer, Celina, who has writer’s block for the first time in her prolific career. At the suggestion of her agent, she decided to take a break in a different location that she chose at random. Several days later she was headed to Lilly Valley, Colorado. She had been fortunate enough to be able to rent a furnished apartment on a month-by-month basis for several months. Unknown to her at the time, all of these wonderful coincidences that brought her to this exact location were attributable to a curse that a witch had placed on four shifter pals, one of which lived directly across the hall from her new apartment.

Miles is a wolf shifter who has spent the last two weeks on the road chasing down leads to discover the location of a hunter cult. Hunters are humans who are aware of the existence of shifters and are dedicated to killing all of them. The curse placed on Miles and his three friends works to bring their fated mates close to the shifters. Upon claiming their mates, the humans change species to match their mate. If the male ignores the mating bond, they experience excruciating pain and could even die if they don’t claim their mate in sufficient time. Miles had an extremely bad experience over a female when he was younger that caused him to be banished from his pack. As a result, he’s not really looking for a mate.

Celina is painfully shy and has no interpersonal relationship skills for dealing with people, particularly men. As she was struggling to carry her groceries up the four flights of stairs to her apartment, Miles caught one of her grocery bags that was slipping out of her grip. When they looked at each other, Miles knew that she was his fated mate. Celina simply knew that she was looking at the most beautiful man she had ever seen.

Of course, there is always an antagonist in a story. In this case, it’s someone who is a hunter and wants to make sure that Miles and his friends are wiped out. I won’t say any more about the antagonist because I don’t want to spoil the book for you. This is a really good book and it has all of the elements you expect to see in a shifter novel. The character development is very well done and the world building is more than adequate. Altogether, this was a great book and I would highly recommend it.

My Rating: 5 Stars.

After the debacle that was the previous book in the series, this book started out a refreshingly easy read. I already liked the FMC, a writer with writer’s block, and her quirky agent. Celina had grown up in foster homes and didn’t like to interact with the public, especially with any negative people. Which is why she chose a small mountain town to getaway to help her unplug and get over her writer’s block. I liked her but already, I was questioning the writing: “After nearly thirty minutes, my vitality levels went back to normal.” Vitality levels? I’m certain the author meant “vitals.” And sometimes the grammar was cringe worthy “That I didn’t believe I was worthy of being with.” As long as those faux pas were few and far between, I could continue on and enjoy the story. But I still had to get over the back story of hunters killing shifters until they were nearly extinct. First of all, it was never explained how hunters knew who were shifters.

Anyhoo, Celina continued to be fun to get to know. I enjoyed the chapter where she planned, shopped for, and cooked dinner for her hot neighbor, Miles. Her inner diatribes of fictional conversations cracked me up. Miles’ personality warmed my heart “I’d fasted the entire day. That way, even if she was terrible, I’d still eat what she’d made and not make her feel bad.” As for the hunter conflict, I had suspected Felicity the moment she “ran into” Miles while he was on his morning jog, and then again when she “ran into” Celina at the grocery store. The new best friend who turns into the bad guy was the same element from the first book. The spice was just OK. I am not a fan of the spice that only happens inside an MCs head, or that is less than a page long. Yet again, whichever author penned this had obviously never been to Colorado since it was explained that the tree were bare in the winter, “The trees that were bare now would be thick, verdant, and lush (in the summer).” THEY ARE EVERGREENS. They don’t lose “leaves” in the winter and they aren’t lush in the summer. It really annoyed me that Colorado was mis-portrayed in this series. However, I can report that the spicy stuff got a lot better more than halfway through the book, and Celina was still a virgin! That was talent in my eyes and more than made up for the previous ho hum spice. It also helped to overlook the wrong descriptions of my home state. The tension from the hunter conflict increased so much that I nearly skimmed past one of the spicy scenes just to find out some resolution. It definitely made me want to read the last of the series.

Miles, the unofficial leader of this mismatched pack finally finds the woman that the curse has made his fated mate.
For the most part, I liked this book. I wasn’t sure how a pack made up of four different shifters would work. But they’ve made the best of it. Forming their own family when their biological families turned them out.
In the first book we learn of the witches curse on each of the shifters. They all know it’s coming. Two have already found their mates. Miles finds his when he helps his new neighbor bring up her groceries.
Celina is a novelist, with unrelenting writers block. Her editor suggests a vacation, time away to clear her head and recharge her batteries. So a map, a blindfolded choice sends her to Lilly Valley Colorado. As soon as the choice is made, something about the location just feels right.
This was a good story, I really like the characters.
Miles was trained as a detective. His enhanced wolf senses help him with tracking. When he meets Celina, he immediately sees and senses she is not like most women. She’s shy, nervous, introverted and downright awkward. So he proceeds with caution. He was very aware of her feelings and is extremely patient with her. With her background in fantasy books, she is much more open and accepting of his wolf.
Celina grew up in foster care. Abandoned by her parents, she grew very distrustful of people. They were never what they claimed, or befriended her to gain something. She’s taken to isolating herself. Living in a big city allows her to feed this fear. A small town, forces her out of her house and her comfort zone. At times she drove me nuts with the poor pitiful me routine. Then would turn around at the same moment and get angry with Miles for trying to protect her. She was all over the place. But she does get better.
We get a lot more information about the big leader funding the Hunters. And learn the lengths he’s willing to go to end the shifters.
It was a fast paced story. Lots of twists and turns, mystery and intrigue.
But as with the other books, continuity and editing is an issue.
Miles and Celina find their way together, but the Hunter arc is unfinished.
I would recommend reading the series in order.

I LOVED this one! My favorite in the series. It was a lot more fun than the others. Usually, I prefer reading the shifter/paranormal character's POV because they're the ones that know what's going on so their side has more going on. This time, the human's POV was the best because Celina was hilarious!

An extreme introvert, shy, inexperienced and anxious, Celina stumbled through every interaction and imagined hilarious nightmare scenarios in her head for every situation. I laughed out loud when she imagined Miles leaving dinner because she made a Brazilian dish with chicken instead of pork, imagining him saying "I'm a professor of Brazilian history at the university and this isn't how it's traditionally made. I'm so disappointed, I never want to see you again. Bye." It was so absurd and ridiculous!

Their meeting and courtship was fun, exciting, nerve-wracking. Celina was a 28-year old completely inexperienced virgin, which was very refreshing to read about, and she lacked confidence or knowledge of dating. Miles was so sweet and patient with her, and was also himself convinced he was unworthy of love, terrified of being rejected by her and prone to anxiety in action scenes. They made a cute dynamic duo and were perfect for each other.

I really appreciated the lack of relationship drama in this book. Celina and Miles were always on the same side and accepted each other for who they were. The conflict cam solely from the hunters, with the action subplot starting to take more space in this book. We're gearing up towards the final confrontation in the next book... Too bad it looks like Blayne's story will be a very angsty enemies-to-lovers one! Ugh...

I gave this author three books to see if she would improve with her writing skills. The answer is no. It was an interesting premise, which made me go to book 3. I really wanted to see where she was going with this whole hunter organization. Having said that.

Two things.
One: proofread. There are so many spelling mistakes, words missing, and even some that are inserted, which makes no sense.
Two: the hardest part of developing any character is conveying to the reader who that character is. This includes descriptions. For the third book, this author used barely any at all. For example, we know Miles‘s eye color, that he has dark hair, and that he is built. That’s it. No description of his features, not even the length of his hair. Same goes for Celina. When the big moment comes and Selena shifts for the first time, there is absolutely no description of her wolf whatsoever. What size is she? What color is her wolf? Does she have any distinguishing features? What’s the eye color? Nothing. It is simply a few sentences about her shifting, and we’re onto the next thing.

Now this lack of description might fit for some who does not care what the characters look like. that’s not me.

So moral of the story is, the author likes to put out books that have sex scenes in them. If you are reading a book just for that, give it a try. It’s the only area where she gives any hint of description, but even that is not enough.

Maybe more 3.5 stars?

This wasn't my favorite of the series. I had difficulty getting through this one compared to the first two. This may contain some spoilers.

This book drives the overarching storyline forward and we learn more about the guy funding the hunters. He's pretty sick and quite the jerk. I'm interested in seeing how the rest of this plays out in the 4th book!

I overall enjoyed Celina and Miles. They're very sweet together. I think the low rating comes in for me because he's the 3rd guy to go through this curse and still wants to push his mate away to protect her. Granted it doesn't last long, but it was kind of a "really, bro?" moment for me since he's seen 2 others go through the process. We learn that Celina has difficulty making friends, but Miles introduces her to the gang on Thanksgiving. Everyone loves her, because she's great and why wouldn't they? But she continues to be more or less left alone it seems and it didn't sit right with me I guess. There were also a few continuity errors I noticed between chapters about where Celina was (i.e. her apt vs Miles). That might be nitpicky on my part.

This is still overall a good series and should def be read in order. Onto Blayne next!

Miles and Celina were an odd but perfect pair. They both had some issues. Celina was an author and grew up in the foster care system. Her parents abandoned her and when she was older and tried to find her Mom, her Mom didn't want anything to do with her. Celina was a loner, introvert and got very antsy around people especially large groups. Miles caught the love of his life (granted he was a teenager) cheating with his pack's Alpha's son and totally lost it and attacked him. Usually that was a death sentence but instead the Alpha banished him. His track record with women was not so great. I think he sabotaged himself.

When Celina came to Lily Valley to try and get her writer juices kicked started again she bumped into her next door neighbor Miles who came to her aid with her arm load of groceries. Yep Celina was his mate.

Their story was pretty intense since the guys were getting closer to finding the head guy of the Hunters. But what they discovered will make your skin crawl. This read had I would say two major twists I didn't see coming. I have a feeling in Blayne's book all hell is going to break loose. Can't wait

I enjoyed this book, but the plot is getting a bit silly now.

In the first book, we learnt about the hunters. Who hated shifters and wanted to kill then all. In the second book, they figured out that it was one man, who was funding the hunters. In this book they figure out who the man is and try to plan how to take him out. The plot gets really silly in this one.

Celina is an author who has a writing block. When her publicist suggests that she goes away for a while, to recharge her batteries, she sticks a pin in the map to decide where to go. When she meets her neighbour Miles, she’s scared as she’s a virgin who doesn’t have any friends. As she’s she’s instantly attracted to him. Celina is kind of depressing in the beginning. As she’s so introverted and is convinced that she’s not likeable. Whereas Miles is the opposite. He has friends and social life.

The hunters ramp up their pursuit in this book. But the plot gets really silly. As they find out what the man is planning.

this is two books not one

This is almost a near completion of the series and it not only contains Wolf shifter story but The panther story as well. No telling as to whether Jared. Will get a nook but I doubt it. Looks like he is leaving the pack. And lily valley.
Books had a very satisfying ending.. I stayed up til 3am finishing I needed answers not sleep! Could not put book down especially once we got to the Panthers story which I guess is a bonus book ??. And possibly final book.
A true ENEMY TO LOVERS and then there is a psycho trying to kill us and all our friends swearing to torture of children and mates.

Some of the stories contain. A villain who threatens horrible things he is going and has done to women and children which may be triggering for some ppl
There is many mentions of suggested violence towards humans. Shifters men women and children
No actual harm was done to children in story of main characters. Although the threat of violence is real to the characters .
A very intense but great read ! Could not put down

>Book Review – Wolf Detective Next Door

>I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 3rd in the Secret Shifters Next Door series and ends in an HEA for the couple, but the plot line continues. Miles, the wolf shifter, is the next of the 4 friends to find his mate. His new next-door neighbor is an author and introvert. Celina is also awkward. Her scenes with Miles at the beginning of the story were hysterical. Miles and Celina’s courting was so sweet. I love how this book continues the plot and past characters from the first 2 books appear.

>The battle with the shifter hunters really ramps up. Some of the bad characters are taken out and the main threat is finally revealed. Horrific actions were revealed. This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this book 4 stars. I still like the comradery between the 4 shifters. I wish they went to see the warehouse, instead of having a PI send them info. I feel their horror would have been that much more poignant.

"That news was new. I would become a shifter?"

No it wasn't. He literally told her the day before and she was willing to do it lol
Editors, do your darn jobs. Especially if you're being paid.

Every single guy who didn't learn their lesson from Tate deserves their pain. Especially when they all told him he was selfish and hurting the group by not being 100%

I cannot understand why the authors are writing ALL the men to act the same.
First, get mate to reject
Then, get mate to trust
Next, finally tell mate everything
Next, lie about their pain because mate couldn't possibly be ready
Finally, get confronted by mate to claim them.

At least Tate had an excuse since Harley was pregnant!!!!

It's beyond obvious who Felicity is from the second we meet her, so what I don't understand is why she's working so hard to get Celina, a human, together with Miles. So far the hunters have actively tried to keep humans and shifters apart. If the authors think this will trip us up into not guessing, they're wrong lol

Celina and Miles. Celina is an author and Miles is a PI and a wolf shifter. Celina is having writer’s block. Her agent suggests that she get away for a while to break her writer’s block. She chooses a small town. Once she found her temporary new home she noticed her neighbor. He scared the crap out of her. She had this feeling when she saw him but didn’t try to figure it out. Miles felt the same thing but he knew what it was. Celina is his fated mate! Holy cow! How to explain this predicament to her? Well looks like Miles has an unexpected challenge. Sure hope Celina is ready! Part two—Blayne and Ava. Blayne is a panther shifter and ever since his brother Liam died he has hated Liam’s boss and Ava who was his girlfriend. He blamed them both for Liam’s death. And with the curse it looks like Ava is his fated mate. How could that be? Well the only thing to do is to have her reject him and the curse is done, right? Well let’s see how that works out!

“He watched me the way a predator watched prey.”

Very enjoyable addition to this Secret Shifters series. This time it’s Miles, the wolf shifter. I really love the unique pack they have! Miles discovers his mate is a virginal, socially awkward writer living across the hall, which is pretty much next door. Just like the prior two books there’s a real story here and the ongoing search for the hunters that are slaughtering shifters. No spoilers.

I loved the interactions between Miles and Celina. They were a sweet couple and he was actually the perfect choice for her.

Blayne, the panther shifter is next. He will be a great Christmas present and I’m looking forward to him. The final chapter in Wolf Detective is his and I can see already it’s going to be an emotional story.

Celine is a writer that has gotten her first case of writer's block. She gets told to take a vacation to rest her mind to be ready to continue her book. She picks Lily Valley and instantly love the small town. She gets shy when her sexy neighbor helps her with her groceries. However, she makes him cookies as a thank you. Its not long after meeting Miles that she is able to write. Its not long before things progress between Celine and Miles. Miles is still tracking a hunter with his security team. Will he tell Celine what he is and what he does? Can they be together?

This is an amazing story that will captivate you from beginning to end. This is a well written and very entertaining story. It's a book that any book lover would enjoy.

This is the 3rd book in the series, I would suggest reading the first book to get the background detail for this book. This is a shifter romance.

Celina is a writer, but is suffering from writers block. Her agent suggest she take a vacation. A small town in Colorado seems to call out to her.
Miles is a wolf shifter and a PI in town. He lives in the apartment opposite. He's just returned from hunting Fownhope the hunters that have been trying to kill him and his friends. He doesn't want a mate because of an experience in his past. However, it seems the curse is still at play when Celina turns out to be Miles' fated mate.

I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend reading it.

hero and heroine both introverted and detailed oriented.

I liked the story but found a large hole in the heroines character description. (Spoilers) How can she be a writer who writes sexually explicit stories and be naïve about sexual relations. I understand not experiencing and being a virgin, but not understanding seduction when she supposedly wrote about it. That was a real hole. Her personality being timid, unable to cope with conflict made sense. Her shy personality made sense, but not her lack of knowledge. Miles is a delightful mix of detailed oriented sensitive male. The larger story started to crescendo in this book with answers to who and where and some how’s explained. It’s an interesting storyline which will come to a finish in the next book.

We advance the larger story in book 3

I like Miles and Celina, and yet there's something missing in their love story. It's easy enough to get pulled into, but mostly it's just so-so. We are, however, beginning to pullback the curtain on our big bad billionaire and his mad passion to wipe out all shifters. Antonio is not a good guy...probably was a terrible husband and father before and then doubled down after his wife left him. He's itching for destruction and has already left quite a lot of rubble in his wake.

But it's time for our fourth pack member to find his mate, and that looks to be a bit more of a challenge than the others...his is some he's definitely on the outs with, his dead twins former girlfriend. That's a lot of messy stuff ahead.

Miles and Celina are two kindred spirits! Celina grew up in Foster care her birth parents wanted nothing to do with her!
She lives inside her head and is a famous writer because of the stories she told herself to get through her pain!
Miles is the PI for the security group and is a loner although the pack are his brothers!
The “curse” is definitely working it brought Celina across the country to rid her of writers block.
There is instant attraction there but they are getting way too close to the villain who wants all shifters dead! Can their love/lust grow with all the barriers and danger they are in?
Hunters are coming will Celina be brave enough to embrace the man and the bear along with the danger? Read on…

Pass

H: Miles Kelly
h: Celina Santos
We have Miles who caught his high school sweetheart with the alpha's son and he beat him up and he got banished from his pack. Then we have Celina who  is a famous author who was abandoned by her mom. She all of a sudden has writer's block and decided to go somewhere to see if she can get to write again. I didn't really like her or the story itself. It was hard to keep up, one page they are talking to each other then the next page he is at his office.  Her low self esteem really annoyed me. It made her seem very weak and naive and really was not a good look on the story for it to be brought again and again. I was hoping to read book 4 from this book but it didn't really interest me anymore after forcing myself to finish this book.

Whoa, what a ride....

The passion, drama, hatred, love and loss, violence. Plus, community and commarderie! I loved the stories... Blaine was so filled with hate, but love shined anyway. Miles and his shy lady love... she wasn't as innocent as he thought, not writing the erotica she had on her table. Did he give one to his friend? It was never said????!.
Poor Felicity or Mariana, she was so messed up that she basically killed herself. I would have liked to know more about Jared.
Happy the vilian (Antonio) got his just desserts, and people in the "cult" got the help they needed.
I'm with Ava..."It's like one of her books come to life,"
4 stars because some of the typos and inconsistencies were hard to get past.

2 books in 1

The first story is Miles and Celina. She is an author who needs a creative break away, and he is the hot new neighbor who gets her creative juices running again. This is book three in a four book series. I have not read the first two books and while I’m intrigued by the side characters to want to go find the first two books it didn’t hinder my enjoyment of this book. The series follows four shifters who’ve been tracking a Hunter cult that is trying to eradicate all shifters. They have also been put under a curse that forces them to find their mate or die. Celina and Miles are brought together by the curse but friends aren’t always who they seem and enemies are closing in. This was well written with a action packed story.

Full of surprises!!

I can't believe the turn of events on this book!! 😳 I was absolutely shocked when Chris, Miles friend was taken by that mad man, and I am hoping he'll be safe enough.
Antonio is definitely a nut case. And poor Jared, 😢 I can't even fathom all the terrible things he most of have gone through since the age of 10. Miles and Celina's book was sweet, but full of action and some drama, but so much information that I can't wait for the next book. I just can't believe they haven't done anything to safe those other victims trap on that facility where Antonio and his crazy scientists are experimenting on women, children, and men. 🤔

This book wasn't great. The FMC was my absolute favorite from all the previous books but this one felt like it could've been a total standalone. The main story arc from the first 2 books was barely mentioned and the new story for this couple was very staggered and just not connected well at all. There were also more spelliing/grammar errors in this book, just like it was written rushed. I was very disapointed as wolves/wolf shifters/etc are normally my favorite and I was excited for this one in the series but idk, I just couldn't get into it. We'll have to see if I can finish the last book or not..

Two great stories.

This book contains two MF paranormal romance stories written in first person and is MPOV. I would say these stories are medium burn with low spice. I really loved how shy and awkward Celia was, it made me smile and I found her character relatable. I also loved how strong a character Ava was, she took everything Blayne sent at her and still found it in herself to stand up to him. I enjoyed not only the romance storylines but also the conclusion of the overarching story line which has run through the four stories and I loved the ending. Overall, this is an enjoyable read and I would recommend it.
