This is a tough one to review.
There were many problematic areas in this book, but it was not a train wreck. The hardest things to get right is the pacing, the tone and the interaction between the two main characters. JC Jaye nailed them all. The characters were likable, the dialogue and banter were charming and funny, and the over-all intention of the book for a sexy, light hearted romance worked well. I also liked the first person perspective of both Tommy and Bebe for each set of chapters.
As for the problems, I think a good editor would have discussed many of them with JC and worked out the kinks. They are not really structural, but more the cosmetic aspects of the story. The characters could have been developed more, we really didn't find out much about either of them. Tommy was a Marine vet, with PTSD (no symptoms ever arose in the telling of the story), whose 81 yr old dad has Alzheimer's. I didn't catch how old Tommy was : 26 - 52 ??? As for Bebe , we learned the most basic info, how her parents and brother died (super quick telling of this) how she is a blogger that works from home. How did she get the money to buy her fixer upper and to purchase all those things from Amazon? Is she a successful bogger ? She went to college also, how did that get paid for? As for Chuck, he was in the first part of the book, he disappeared about 120 pages in. Is he ok ?
The sexy talk was at times repetitive and borderline crude, and how I imagine people in pornos talk. It didn't feel authentic. The profanity was fine but sometimes less is more, it can have the opposite effect of what you are going for and not feel very sexy at all.
"After stroking down what felt like a friggin' yardstick, I got to the bottom , encountering two swollen spheres that could pass for a pair of unripe Florida grapefruits, jumbo-sized. " Wow, unripe Florida grapefruits, I'm not even sure what it is that I'm supposed to envision there.
I took a lot of notes, but that's all I will say about it, I really hate to tear down what is ultimately a solid beginning to writing this genre. I think JC Jaye has done a remarkable job on her first book, and I really hope she will keep going.
