Embrace Me Darkly

Rate this book
Turns out I’m a good girl, who likes very bad boys. No, not boys. Monsters.

I don’t think much of it when I hook up with the brooding stranger making eyes at me from across the bar. Not until I run into him a second time… This time he’s an accused killer, and it’s my job to get him put away for good.

I soon learn there’s much more to this guy than meets the eye. For starters, he’s a vampire accused of murder—and he’s my first case as a prosecutor newly recruited into a top-secret judicial system that oversees the comings and goings of the city’s supernaturals. Not surprisingly, he’s telling me I shouldn’t waste my time focusing on him, when there’s a far worse killer still on the loose.

My head knows I shouldn’t trust anything he tells me, but my body still remembers the ecstasy it felt at his hands, and my heart is whispering that maybe I should take a chance and trust him.

But siding with the man I’m meant to convict will risk more than just my job. It could also end my life…

So excited to be getting into this complex and exciting world from Kira James. The premise is smartly written and expertly carried out, centered on a relationship between a vampire hero on the run and the mortal lawyer put on the case to permanently take him down. There's just enough magic and woo-woo to entangle my PNR-loving heart (graveyards! hidden tunnels! blood rituals!), but technological touches (remote-activated stakes! hematite-laced prison cells!) to keep the reality tight and the suspense high. Woven between it all is my absolute favorite of all romance tropes: a pair of starcrossed lovers who had me literally clutching my Kindle close and deep sighing into the wee hours of the night. What a wonderful world this all is--and I am SO here for ALL of it! Le sigh!

4.75/5*

World building 4.5/5 | Characters 5/5 | Plot 4.5/5 | Romance 4/5 | Spice 4/5

I absolutely loved reading this ARC. I can tell the book is really something when I can picture it in my mind as if I was watching the real thing unfold or imagine it filmed as a really great TV series on HBO or something like that. This book fit that bill perfectly. I loved all the characters in the book, main and supporting a like and I hope that over the course of this series, the readers will get a chance to learn more about ( especially- Tiberius, Nick, Caris and Doyle). Sara is such a great FMC- she is smart, honourable and not afraid to stick to her beliefs. Luke is just yummy and his and Sara's chemistry is off the charts. Everyone also has great backstories with more to come, I am sure. The plot is pretty original even though it is a tad predictable at the end, that didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the book.

A few things to note:
- there are A LOT of characters in this novel, and at times it was tough trying to keep track of them all, but for the most part, they all served a roll. Just be ready for it.
- I'm not sure there is a trigger warning but there is violence against children and inferred rape. So be warned.

If you enjoy a dark and delicious PNR with plenty of smut and set in an intricate world with interesting characters, this is the book for you!

* I was provided an ARC of this book by Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion and all those opinions are definitely my own*

Embrace Me Darkly by Kira James is a great read. Sara is a strong independent character. She a prosecuter who is trying to figure out who killed her father when she was younger. I really enjoyed seeing Sara grow as a character as through the book. The relationship between Sara and the male love interest was my favorite part of the book. The way he would do anything for her and the pull they had towards each other made this book that much better. The supernatural world was also fun to read about. It didn’t go into too much detail but relied on previous knowledge of vampires, shifters, demons… There were just enough new twists that pulls you into the world and make you not want to put the book down.

This book is great for anyone who wants to read about a strong female prosicuter who falls for a vampire on the wrong side of the law who is more than happy to kill anyone who would hurt her.

I received a free copy of this book and I am leaving an honest review voluntarily.

I was provided an arc ebook copy from NetGalley for my honest review.

I did enjoy reading this book. It was fast paced and action packed, with a little bit of spice. I loved the banter between characters, had me chuckling.

I found the change of povs somewhat abrupt and confusing at times. Like who are we with now??
Also I didn’t quite enjoy how major plot points were explained away. I thought we were going on a journey to find out who killed her father, instead she was just told. In the middle of the book. And when she was introduced into the paranormal world she was just like…ok. It just all seemed to simple. Also the memory wipe. Like.. what?

But I did love the plot twist at the end. I thought that was well done. And I liked how they found out, through evidence, instead of just being told. I wanted more of that. Since it is a paranormal csi type book.

Also Tasha freaked me out from the beginning. I don’t like the whole “I’m a little girl trapped in a woman’s body” thing. It reminded me of Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice. Shudder. And Serge with Tasha… just no.

Also the epilogue?? Like she was just told another mind blowing thing and it’s just like..huh. Ok. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Otherwise the book was entertaining. I liked it.

Thank you Netgalley, Author Collective 20, and Kira James for an eARC copy of Embrace Me Darkly.

Sara just prosecuted her biggest case, and she won. During her celebration, she meets the tall, dark, and handsome man, Luke, and her life is forever changed.

I enjoyed this book. I’m a sucker for a good urban fantasy, especially with vampires. The paranormal world was interesting and easy to follow. Though, there were things about the world that was just implied based on common knowledge.

The romance was sexy. The undeniable connection and chemistry was evident through the pages. I loved Sara and Luke together, and I loved them separately as well. They were both very strong main characters.

The POV changes were difficult to follow, as the prospective would change in the middle of a scene. However, having so many POVs was very interesting, and it seemed necessary in some points.

There’s still some unanswered questions, but it makes me very intrigued to continue reading this series as the next books come out.

I recommend this book to anybody looking for a fast paced, urban fantasy with vampires and other supernatural creatures.

“She brings light to the dark inside me.”

Sara is a successful prosecutor. After a difficult but successful case she decided to enjoy a drink and relax in a bar. And that's where she met him, a tall, handsome man with wonderful dark eyes that he couldn't take off of her. She immediately felt a great attraction to him and thought that this man would define her life from now on. And that's exactly what happened when she met him again in the court room.

And this is how a strong relationship begins, a strong chemistry between Sara and Luke. Two strong individuals who have been through a lot in their lives and who together will discover each other and protect each other in the difficult times to come.

Even though it's a story with supernatural content, like vampires, demons and werewolves, it's so realistically written that it doesn't feel unrealistic, which I found quite interesting. It is also a steamy romance with the right amount of spice for me. I liked that the author gave importance to how the relationship between them developed.
If you love steamy, dark fantasy romances with a mystery plot then you should definitely read this one!

Checked out with kindle unlimited, February 2023 to test this debut series by Kira James. Sara is out celebrating a huge win at her prosecutor’s office when she meets a beautiful, mysterious stranger at her favorite bar. After one passionate night together, Sara discovers he is a vampire named Luke and implicated in the murder of a local retired judge. As a prosecutor for a supernatural judicial system, Sara and Luke will be forced to work together to overcome a much bigger threat to their city than Luke. This was the first in a six-book series. This was an engaging mix of supernatural crime and romance. This world is also rife with political alliances, betrayal, and webs of deceit. I liked James’s take on Vampires and the laws governing them. The pace remains blinding from the first page to the last. I struggled to rate this book since there were aspects that I loved and hated. I know I will read book 2 eventually to see how this plot progresses. (3/5 rating)

A well-written story with some fun, unexpected plot twists. It was interesting getting insight into so many characters thoughts and a world that's somewhat different from your typical fantasy. I hope we get more of Doyle's story in a future installment.

"When I am with you, my blood always burns."

This book was so good i liked it. The world building was amazing and the writing was chef’s kiss. I loved all the characters that were introduced and I’m so excited to read a book about Doyle he’s very interesting and Tucker.

Luke has my heart. I felt so bad for him and what he had gone through. And i was so glad to see where he was and what he achieved i was also so happy that he found happiness finally.

Sara is a lovely character i loved her. She’s your badass prosecutor who’d do anything to put bad people behind bars and she did. I loved watching her trust Luke and get to know him and his world their relationship was wholesome.

The plot twist at the end blew me away. I didn’t see it coming and it awesome. Overall this book was a good read i liked it. If you guys love paranormal romance then you should give this book a try.

Thank you to NetGalley and author, Kira James, for providing an arc in exchange for an honest review. Embrace Me Darkly releases on October 27th, 2022. This is the first book in a series, but the ending is not too much of a cliffhanger - so I would pre-order this debut!

Pick up this series if you like:
-Hot Vampires and half vamps
-Accurate legal career descriptions
-Strong female lead
-Dual POV
-Mystery and crime
-Lots of steam

This gave me Lost Girl and Buffy vibes. The paranormal world-building was super interesting. I loved the side characters and how well-explained and realistic the big cast was. Personally, I could not enjoy the series that much as the female lead has not only my name, but also my exact job - so it hit too close to home lol. But, I would recommend this to others!

Rating : 4,5/5 ⭐️

I loved it so much ! This is not a full 5 stars because that was too dark at some point for me, and I didn’t knew that was this dark.
But overall, loved it. Especially, the relation between Lucius and Doyle/ Sara and Doyle/ Tucker and Doyle … yes kind of liked Doyle lol
I was more into the plot than the romance and it is telling that was good because I am more of a romance girl. And also I cried at the end because LUCIUS.
To conclude, this book is a nearly favorite book of 2023.

EMBRACE ME DARKLY is the first full-length instalment in Kira James’ contemporary, adult DARK ALLIANCE erotic, paranormal romance series. This is the continuing story of ancient vampire Lucius ‘Luke’ Dragos, and prosecutor Sara Constantine. There is a prequel novella CRAVE ME ROUGHLY that reveals some of the background between Sara and Luke. EMBRACE ME DARKLY advances the series approximately three years.

NOTE: The Dark Alliance series was originally published as the Shadowkeepers Series but the new release has been extensively revised.

WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

SOME BACKGROUND: Twenty years earlier, Sara Constantine’s father Frank was murdered, in a vampire-like killing. Sara had searched most of her adult life for information regarding her father’s death but nothing and no one claimed to know what happened. Three years ago, Sara met a man and fell in love only to discover said man was a vampire, and in the end, neither one was able to remember the other in the face of wiped memories, and broken hearts.

Told from third person perspectives EMBRACE ME DARKLY following several paths, focuses on attorney Sara Constantine as she is tasked with prosecuting Lucius Dragos, the vampire accused of killing Judge Marcus Braddock. Sara is a recent hire at the PEC (Preternatural Enforcement Commission), a Division of Homeland Security, in the wake of a big win in the human courts. Her first assignment with the PEC is to prove the man with whom she is falling in love is a violent vampire who has yet to gain control of his evil side but all is not as it appears to be, and Sara finds herself at a crossroads, a conflict of interest ignored by both sides. Secrets reveal a war between the Therians and the vampires is on the horizon, and the killing of the judge is the precipice upon which the war will be declared, and Sara’s last case working for the human court is about to implode.

There is a large ensemble cast of supernatural characters and creatures-vampires, demons, hellhounds,Therians aka Weres; fairies, goblins and ogres. We are introduced to several including Half-demon, PEC Agent Ryan Doyle, gifted human Agent Tucker; siren and paralegal Blair; Lucius’ friend Sergius aka Serge; Ancient vampire and liaison to the Shadow Alliance Tiberius; Nikko Leviathan, the Direct of Division 6, Head of Violent Crimes: Luke’s ward,500 year old vampire Tasha; female vampire Caris; werewolf J. Frank Murray; and Shadow Alliance advocate Nicholas Montague.

EMBRACE ME DARKLY is a complex, detailed and intricate story of the supernatural, of the beast within that must be controlled. The premise is intriguing and angst filled; the romance is seductive; the characters are numerous, energetic, powerful and dynamic.

Embrace Me Darkly is a wickedly brilliant and spell-bindingly enthralling journey of undeniable love, unyielding revelations, and indescribable beauty. Nothing can prepare you for this story, and nothing can compare to its child-like wonder and epic danger as it regales and compels your heart to listen, learn, and love along the way. This story has everything that I have come to crave and adore in a story: insatiable curiosity, unstoppable love, and wicked twists.

Sara is fighting for so many things in her life. Among them to bring justice to the innocent who have been wronged, the identify of her father's killer, and to find something to fill the dark void in her life that relentlessly eats away at her. An unexpected promotion on the heels of winning her most hard fought case is a good start to putting her in a good state of mind, but what she finds is something almost unbelievable as she begins to navigate a whole new world. Luke is part of that world, and he both intrigues and scares her in equal measures. Unsure of who to trust, she finds herself reluctantly following her heart as if it already know this world intimately. Will Sara live to fight her next case, or will she succumb to the lethal darkness stalking her that is both terrifyingly unknown and exceptionally clever?

Luke and Sara are what some might see as another cliche couple in this wonderful paranormal story, but I find them uniquely intriguing and devastatingly beautiful. Their love is truly unstoppable and undeniably breathtaking. Their connection and their struggles are very real, and above all I love that their hearts would never let them give up on the other no matter what happened. They are truly fated by the blessings of Heaven and who they are.

I have thoroughly savored and enjoyed this exceptional masterpiece by Kira James! There was never a dull moment to be found amid the danger and darkness that thrives and nurtures this wonderful new world. The characters never failed to delight and entertain, and I am looking forward to delving even deeper into this fascinating world of the unknown and the ancient.

I was happy to win a copy of Embrace Me Darkly via a Goodreads giveaway and excited to dive in. I seem to be on a lucky streak with my giveaway reading choices lately, because this one completely satisfied. I'm usually drawn to paranormal/urban fantasy books and I found this to definitely fit that bill, with the bonuses of a great murder mystery plot intertwined with thoughtful character development and some downright steamy scenes. We have an objective, third-person narrator that does, at times, focus on the thoughts and actions of different characters. Sometimes I'm not a fan of this but I think it worked here, giving the reader enough information and insight to get to know the different characters and to move the plot forward, but without revealing too much too soon. I had some ideas about the ending and was not totally surprised when I got there, yet still found it to be gratifying. The story overall moved at a solid pace, picking up speed and by the last quarter of the book, I couldn't put it down.

I hadn't previously read anything else from the author but I expect I will probably continue with the series, which appears to focus on different characters within the world created here. In learning the series setup, I was actually more impressed with James' character building in this, the first book of the series (not including the novella preceding Embrace Me Darkly). I found the characters to be unique and intriguing, but without the feeling of learning more than I needed to for the story at hand. At the same time, from what we get in this book, I'm invested enough in the other characters to read their stories later in the series. This can be a really tricky balance to find, but I think James nailed it. I hope that future books will still continue to reference Sara and Luke though, as I'm not quite ready to move on entirely from their beautiful relationship. That said, we are left with a HEA, so if this was as far as you wanted to go, I think you'd be satisfied walking away at the end of the book and treating it as a standalone.

Embrace Me Darkly,
by Kira James

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: Mystery & thrillers, Romance, Sci-fi and Fantasy,

I enjoyed this read, I love fantasy stories and there's a great mix of characters and types here. Sarah is so invested in finding her fathers killer she based her career around it. He had a strong belief in the supernatural, and she wonders if that was a factor? Vampires and the like can't be real though...can they? She learns otherwise and gets dropped into a very different world.
Luke, wow! Yet though he and Sara have a very strong connection when they meet it seems they're destined to be apart. He knows that his actions in the supernatural world and her job as prosecutor make it difficult, he knows he's not the killer she's looking for but all the evidence points to him, and not only that his past, when she learns of it, is bound to drive a wedge between them.
I love that sort of story where there is so much keeping people apart, and here it was very real stuff, not some semi tragic but easily abandoned actions. Sara has a lot to get past, Luke had done what she would regard as terrible things and yet he too has reasons and doesn't regret them. Its the merging of two people from very different worlds.
I really didn't see who the real killer was, looking back the clues were there but I missed them. I love it when I'm taken by surprise like that, when a book isn't a typical predictable, know who's behind things from early on.

Stars: Four, a really good start to the series.

Luke is my favorite character in this vampire dramatic series. He’s infatuated with the infamous Prosecuting Attorney Sara Constantine. Sara is a tough determined lady whose looking for answers for the killer running through LA, as well looking for answers about her father. Together the two fight the emotions that they have for one another.
I like that the main characters are strong and independent. Their goals match with the plot to the story. Luke’s goal is Tasha. His Ward that he swore to protect. With this a paranormal saga the plot has logic that enhances the character’s motivations within the story. The characters all bring their own issues to the drama.
Doyle was getting on my nerves to much. Tyler he reminds of the scrawny little side kick who only squeaks when the boss is about to take down someone. The book is a page turner. The story captivated me with its entertainment, it’s action scenes and the undeniable romance be Sara and Lucius. There are a number of characters in this story that is linked back to the Vampire’s.
I love that the writer explained who each character was and what Fae that they are and what powers that they have as well as their weaknesses. The story is an easy read for me, which I loved. The story doesn’t read like those young adult books with the dialogue that gets on your nerves. I give this book two snaps and a snap. Until next time my fellow readers… read on.

This is very well written, and I couldn't put it down! The author managed to keep the tension up the whole time too.

The intro of the MC to the supernatural world was a little fast and cheesy, she accepted it a bit too well.

The twist at the end was very well done and I enjoyed it

Some of the dialog lacks subtext. Someone just rants everything they are thinking with no subtext. Or major plot points are just told to you.
For example...

SPOILERS
The fact that Sara's father was killed on order of her new work? Major! And just told to her. the whole reason she took this job was to get info on her father's death, and she was told it was a cold case, they had no idea who killed him. Instead of investigating herself and figuring out the lie, Luke just told her! And he also revealed that it wasn't Serge, but himself that killed her father!

The fact that Luke had his mind wiped? Just told to him. No detective work to figure it out.
The fact that Sara had her mind wiped? Luke just told her!

It was okay that Luke just told her she was half vampire at the end. But the fact that she instantly knew it was Tiberius was weird.

I liked the reveal that Tasha attacked Braddock first. That was great, because Luke didn't just tell Sara. She had to find out through DNA evidence. Actual work. That should have been the case for all these examples.

Our heroine, Sara, just won a high profile case, and she's out celebrating when she meets our Hero, Luke in a bar. She's known to have one night stands, but the one she shares with Luke seems to reach a deeper level. Her success in the courtroom leads to a promotion with a special division of "Homeland Security", where she'll be prosecuting cases involving paranormal beings. Unfortunately for Sara, her first case with the Preternatural Enforcement Commission (PEC), is to prosecute the vampire who murdered a retired judge. The vampire happens to be her one night stand, Luke, aka Lucius Dragos. Sara prides herself on following the law so she must find a way to remain impartial and to turn off her feelings for Luke. To his credit, Luke doesn't want to do anything to jeopardize her career, but he's hiding secrets, and must figure a way out of his incarceration.

I loved their story as both Sara and Luke are strong characters. When they're together, our author weaves a sensual romance amidst their turmoil. This book ends on a happily ever after, but the overarching storyline for the series remains unsolved. A solid 4.5 star read.

Embrace Me Darkly by Kira James.
It could also end my life…
Brilliant read. I loved the story. Loved the cover. 5*.

4 Stars ⭐️

I found this book a little tough to get into at the beginning. Early on, Sara comes across as a little arrogant and I struggled to keep up with the constantly growing cast of characters. They all had very different perspectives and well thought out scenes, but it was all presented a bit fast for my taste with little room to breathe.
Where this book really shines is when all that information comes together. About halfway in, I started realising I was invested in Sara & Luke’s story and how it would end. I also enjoyed the friendships and other relationships that weave an interesting web around the cast. The story continued to deliver on the chemistry and the romance, without losing the strength of the plot.
Overall this was super well written, enjoyable, sexy and had a great twist that really caught me off guard, I highly recommend picking it up. ESPECIALLY if you like morally grey, hot vampire men.
Loved it!

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Embrace me Darkly by Kira James. I heard of this book when Jennifer L. Armentrout shared it in her Jlanders group. When I read the blurb for it, I knew it was right up my alley. I read the prequel novella Crave me Roughly before reading Embrace me Darkly. That book gave me some insight into Sara and Luke. I do suggest reading it before Embrace me Darkly since it gives you some good info. I won’t go into details because I don’t want to spoil anything.

Embrace me Darkly is the first in the series. And it kind of reminded me of Kelley Armstrong’s otherworld series. The book does have a pretty good twist that I loved. And of course Luke is a swoon worthy vampire, who wants nothing more than to protect Sara at all cost.

Overall, I really enjoyed Embrace me Darkly and I look forward to the next book in the series.

think: open door romance in a world of adult Twilight meets Men in Black (in such a good way) 😂😍

read this book is you want to experience
-forbidden workplace romance
-lust at first sight
-insta-love? kinda? fated mates vampire edition vibes
-mentally unstable ward
-SO MANY different kids of monsters and paranormal creatures and they were all done so well
-a truly unique take on vampires/vampirism than anything i've ever read
-HEA
-twists and turns
-graphic murder scenes
-murder mystery

rounded this up to a 5 because I was on the edge of my seat and really enjoyed this read.
it can be a dense read due to there being LOTS of characters and world building (that were all really interesting and well done)

TWs: murder, stalking, SA- not explicit, SA of children- not explicit

Thank you to NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for a willing and honest review.

“You touch me, Sara, in ways that it would be better that you did not. I know I should leave—know even that you should push me away. And yet I cannot stop.”

This book was not what I expected. I saw the words vampire, read a review that said it teetered on Interview with the Vampire -esc, and the cover of the book is gorgeous.

I felt like I was reading a script for a movie, or maybe a tv show given how long the book is.

My biggest gripe is that there are so many things happening. I think, due to its length, that it would do better to have more chapters and each one being a specific labeled POV. Otherwise, this is a pretty good read.

Intriguing thriller

Luke's and Sarah's story is full of twists and turns. Sarah is an assistant D A. She is prosecuting a child serial killer, while in the middle of the trial, she has another strange killing come across her office. One where the victim's throat has been torn out and the body drained of blood.

Lucio's Drago's is an ancient Vampire who has been around since Roman times. He has secrets and he works for a secret society that keeps the Super natural world in line.

Sarah's and Luke's world collide over death and chaos. There are so many different supernaturals in this story. I love it, and the story behind each one of them is just great. I truly believe if you love supernatural thrillers you'll enjoy this book.

I wasn’t sure about this book at the start. It had a very noir feel to it. I warmed to the book. I think it would be a great book for someone who hadn’t ever read a supernatural/fantasy book. It’s set in a very relatable world with a relatable female lead. It is a crime thriller with vampires, demons and werewolves in the mix. There were some life altering changes or information that didn’t get the attention it deserved. Her father and her new job needed more attention than it got. They were both major plot devices that seemed unfinished. Overall it was an exciting thriller.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC I received in return for my honest opinion.
