If you like steamy stories from the Georgian or Regency Era, this novella might be for you.
A Second Wedding Night is the first book in the series Lust and Longing. It is a Historical Regency Romance of about 20,000 words (81 pages) about second changes, lust and love with a happy ever after.
Emilie Jacobsen is a Danish author who writes historical romance from the Regency and Victorian eras in England and Medieval love stories with a hint of fantasy set in a fictional medieval Denmark. Her first book was published in 2022.
She lives with her family in Copenhagen, Denmark, and tries to find time to write between playing tag, hiding behind a curtain, and impersonating a stuffed monkey. Besides writing one of her biggest passions is traveling and many of her stories are inspired by places she has been.
A short story. Some low steam scenes. It’s a sad tale. I wonder how many women went through something like this back in those times. Some clear communication could’ve prevented so much heartache.
At first I was going to rate it one star because the husband had mistresses through the 10 years of marriage. Then I thought this was closer to what marriage was like for the nobility, basically strangers getting married for status and economic reasons. The story was decent and kudos to the author for writing it but adultery is detrimental and painful when all is said and done.
The mil gives Charlie wife some horrible advice and it detrimentally effects their first night ...later after talking to Charlie's mistress the wife finds making love can be fun.
Millie was looking forward to her marriage to Charles, the Duke of Camborne. Like most young ladies of 1792 she is timid and naïve. After the wedding her mother comes and talks to her, and it changes her life. Charles can’t wait for their wedding night when he can show his beloved how much he cares for her. Nothing goes as he thought it would. Not understanding why his perfect wife in every other way doesn’t enjoy being with him. It takes ten years, three children and a savvy mistress to them understand. This is a sad story but one that I am sure happened all the time then. Young ladies listen to their mothers or older woman to guide them. When given wrong information they never question it. This is a fast read with a happy ending and lots of lessons in between. I loved how both Millie and Charles handled the surprise encounter. A lot of readers may find fault with Charles but need to remember most men in this time had mistress. I was very happy with the way the story went and the ending was perfect. If you want a passionate, steamy read with wonderful characters this is the book for you.
This is an intriguing story and being about a married couple makes it even better. There are a number of errors throughout. This would benefit from a serious going over by a proofreader. Reef was used for reed; let for led; brought for broad; with for when; tucked for pulled. In a room entirely done in purple a chair was, "of course crimson". Crimson isn't purple. Gunter's had ices and sorbets not ice cream. Millie was " accustoming to feel passion" - becoming accustomed to feeling passion. White wedding gowns weren't the fashion in 1782. They wouldn't be fashionable until 1840 when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert. That the gown was muslin isn't correct either. The fabric would be better even if the design was simple. This was a society wedding after all. Her mother would have made sure the gown reflected their status.
The story didn't have the lurid details a truly steamy book would. It was mild really. Having a married couple falling in love with each other was a lovely change.
A Second Wedding Night written by Emilie Jacobsen is a relatively short but entertaining novella set during the Regency period. 18 year old Millicent is marrying 25 year old Duke Charles. The night before their wedding, Millie‘s mother sits her down and explains what will take place in the marriage bed; only loose women find enjoyment in marital relations. Not wanting her husband to think her a deviant, Millie is just short of welcoming her husband in her bed.
Charles is more than satisfied with his wife in social settings and in the time they spend together but becomes reticent with her demeanor in the bedroom.
After 10 years, Millicent, now a mother of three, aware her husband has taken a mistress wants an answer as to do women find pleasure with their husbands.
As I read the book, I found myself questioning how prevalent male’s mother’s attitude was within the women of the upper classes. Did men seek mistresses because their wives were cold or indifferent to their advances? This book deals into that question and gives us a little insight . It’s an entertaining read.
I found only the first part of the book interesting. Millie’s mother basically tells her only wanton women like sex so she hides her sexual feelings from her husband, afraid he’ll look down on her if he knows what she really feels. Thinking Millie doesn’t love him, Charles looks elsewhere for sex Ten years and three children later Millie learns that what her mother told her isn’t true and she goes to her husband’s mistress to be educated
I found going to the mistress unbelievable and the mistress’s reaction ridiculous. After Millie tells her husband she really likes sex everything turns around for the couple and the book becomes a typical romance novel with Millie and Charles both obsessed with sex and each other. For me the plot became mostly boring.
A steamy story. A Novello about a couple betrothed for years, they marry and seem very suited other than in the bedroom. It was a nice story, but it did not really grab me. Idly I did wonder that as Millie was such a great help to Charles socially, with the children, writing speeches etc etc and they seemed to get on so well and enjoy each others company that the question around the bedroom had not actually been mentioned or discussed. Millie even was thinking he did not like her dressing too overtly, and I think this aspect of the topic would have been discussed. So not terrible, as said a nice read.
This was a sad story with a happy ending. Inexperienced Millie gets some very bad advice from her mother on her wedding day. Millie takes the advice to heart and it nearly destroys her marriage. Like many other men of the time, her husband Charles ends up taking a mistress because Millie does not enjoy his attentions in the marital bed. Millie and Charles don't realize the depth of their misunderstanding until 10 years and three children later. Once they understand what happened, the two of them start behaving like newlyweds all over again. I read this story very quickly and it was quite entertaining. I'm looking forward to reading more of this author's books in the future.
This book was very frustrating! After about three chapters I almost quit reading the book. There were so many dropped words, incorrect words, and other grammar errors it was very annoying and distracting. Practically every page had at least one error! The book's saving grace was the story itself, so I continued. The author also does a decent job writing for that time period. If this story gets the grammar and proofreading errors fixed, I would likely rate it a 5...
How many brides were given this misguided advice which ruined many marriages and the enjoyment of marriage.? Many husbands more or less raped their wives to beget an heir and spares. Wives must have lived in fear a lot of the time. Men found mistresses who were liberated, and no-wonder. This author wrote about this topic with sensitivity. It seems that teenagers are not the only ones who suffer 'growing pains'. A gentle and enjoyable read.
An easy to read novella about second chance romance and love in an arranged marriage. Charles and Millie have been married for 10yrs. Intimacy has been perfunctory more than pleasurable and non existent for 2 yrs. Charles really tried but Millie was not receptive. He still greatly admires, respects and cares for his wife, and is still attracted to her but thinks she doesn’t feel the same for him. In the last 2 years Charles got a mistress who he visits regularly, he does not know that Millie is aware of this. Until he discovers Millie at his mistress’s house one day. This discovery leads to them have a much needed honest conversation and Millie at last discloses to Charles things which help him understand his wife much better. This evening is almost like their second wedding night as per the title. They come to know each other in ways that they didn’t in preceding 10yrs and the romance and passion is reignited. It is a delightful read. Millie is really quite naive for a lot of the book, but the author explains her sheltered outlook. It is easier to warm to Charles. The kids are fun and add to the story nicely.
The premise of the story is good. I enjoyed reading it and will read others by this author. I like the characters and plot -- good job with those, four stars. That's a high rating from me, as a book must be truly exceptional to get five.
However, I caught more typos and grammatical errors than I am comfortable with in e-books, thus only three stars.
I couldn't stop reading this book, loved it from the beginning! If you're looking for a good entertaining book, and you're into historical romance like me, this is the perfect book for you.
Milli and Charles married young. Their marriage was good, but because her mother gave her bad advice before they married, things turned sour. Then 10 years later Milli learnt the truth of a true marriage and so a second wedding night was born. Thank you ❤️
Hilarious and funny? Why, I'm positively tickled pink! The characters in this book must be a real hoot. I can't wait to dive in and see what kind of zany antics they've cooked up.
What a disaster when Mama tells her daughter that only wanton women experience pleasure in bed, and that showing pleasure would disgust her husband. Ten wasted years and 3 children later she finally learns the truth.
An interesting yet easy ready of times gone by but not a lot has changed in some societies. It seems wealth comes with a price but it can be overcome with love & honesty .
Antiquated ideas always seem to stay in each new generation. It is shocking what our ancestors believed. Living under the thumb of someone who believes them can have devastating effects.
Was so slow and uneventful at first. When the spice scenes came up they were alright for the most part could have been longer but still very sad that this probably happened back in the olden times as well.
I loved this story. I look forward to reading more of her books. I recommend everyone to read her books. I look forward to reading the next one. Kattie
Short sweet spicy that's how I would say to this little novella my 1st from this author and definitely will be looking to see what other books she has for this era
