Don’t believe us? Here’s what readers have to

As a beginner, this approach appealed to me more as a reader and made learning more engaging. Having the furigana above the kanji and katakana characters also hit a really strong point in getting me as a reader to read more consistently and follow the story without worrying too much about figuring out a character because seeing the hiragana version helped me remember kanji I'd seen earlier in the story. I really like the stories and the lessons behind them, it makes reading and learning enjoyable.

Stories are good and have а hidden message at the end, which leaves readers to think about. The kanji difficulty is suitable for readers N5/N4 level.

I feel that this is the sort of resource I have always wanted as I look for ways to learn Japanese through reading.

According to Goodreads, I added this book to my to-read shelf on December 9th of 2022. How long it has been since then! I started reading this book January of 2024. Fast forward seven months later and I am finally done! I remember when I first tried reading this book it was way above my level. Now after taking extensive college classes and studying on my own, I am so proud of myself for getting to the point of reading comprehensive short stories.

It has taken me so long to get here. I thought reading Japanese was going to be a quicker journey than what it truly has been.... My point in writing all of this is: don't give up on yourself if you get discouraged!

Now more on the book itself; I enjoyed it more than the level one stories. This definitely felt more challenging with connecting clauses. Additionally, the questions were written in a way where you had to understand the story's context which I liked. I learned a lot more vocabulary as well. One thing about the vocabulary lists though that I thought was strange was including words that were in katakana or Japanese words that don't have direct translation for example: さむらい = samurai. I felt that it was not really necessary and the average person could piece it together. Other than that, this was a thoughtfully written book.

Another great book in the collection of Japanese short stories. Not only was each individual story entertaining, but it used enough simple vocabulary and grammar while having a vocabulary list of the more complex grammar, to allow for a confident but challenging read which does not leave the reader disheartened.

I love these books as someone who is trying to improve their Japanese!

An excellent way to teach Japanese.

My only complaint is that the choice for words highlighted in the vocabulary list seems a bit random. The text won’t highlight N3 Kanji words but will highlight katakana loan words which seems a bit unnecessary.

Other than that minor gripe this is a brilliant resource for learning Japanese.
