"Operation Phoenix" by Susan Hayes
My Thoughts...
This was quite a interesting story that dealt with Lieutenant Trinity West and Commander Dax Rossi who had known each other for many years. But after the death of Trinity's brother [Travis] ten years earlier things had greatly changed for her and definitely how she felt toward Dax [her brother's best friend]. Why was this? What had happened had something to due with how the death of Trinity's brother. Now Trinity and Dax are being thrown together because her base was being investigated [a cold case] for thefts that had happened years ago from the 'Vault of the Fallen.' Now Commander Dax and his team of the Nova Force are there to solve this problem. So with Trinity and Dax having had a history together that didn't end well how will all of this come out as secrets of their past start to come out along with what has gone on with the thefts on the base? Will these two be able to find their happiness as lots of secrets and mysteries come out? This author did a wonderful job at letting the readers into Trinity and Dax's complicated past which was sweet from their young love but then came the broken hearts and then death that pulled them apart. Now, that they are having to work together will these two be able to mend their relationship in this second chance at love and learning to trust again while all heck is going on around them in trying to solve a old mystery and find the identity of the thief? I loved the characters who were all so well developed, portrayed, outstanding interaction with this Nova Force 3 team, 'I've got your back' and some believable helping to give the readers a story that was emotional, suspenseful, and mysterious read with wonderful action scenes while keeping the reader wondering whodunit. In the end will we get 'who had stolen the DNA of the Fallen' and will Trinity and Dax get their second chance at a HEA? To find out you will just have to pick up this good science fiction read "Operation Phoenix" to find out!
Totally enjoyed this - I love the suspenseful mystery, the second chances love story, and the world the author sets up. Looking forward to reading more in the Nova Force series.
I've always enjoyed Susan Hayes' books the newest delicious Erotic Sci Fi Nova Force was pretty awesome.
A great start to what I'm sure will be an amazing series. Dax is Mr. Grumpy and gruff all up until he see's an old flame. He softens a bit but is carrying a whole lot of guilt. How does he start to make it right?
Lt. West she is the base commander on a base full of secrets and more secrets, when she doesn't find the source of a old crime the upper management sends in a Force to find the answers needed.
Trinity is pretty bent with a reason to be mostly. Full of hurt and anger she uses it as a shield against the Commander from her past.
I so enjoyed this story love the lead characters but really really enjoyed the secondary characters just as much. Family doesn't need to be blood just need to be family. When *%$#hits the fan, its all about who you trust and getting the job done. A story with a mystery mixed in with a few hot yummy scenes makes for a great read.
I read and reviewed this voluntarily and recommend it for those who love Sci Fi with a bit of heat. Enjoy.
Read as part of Nova Force Box Set One. I picked up the boxed-set on a promo sale because I loved book 2. This one isn't as strong. A little too much 'angst' for my taste, but 2nd chance romance is not my favorite. Overall strong fi/action/romance.
It was great! I was already reaching for the next one. I don't have too much time. It was sure a shock for both Dax & Trinity when they saw each other as he got off the ship. He wasn't expecting to see the girl he left behind several years ago when he & her brother joined the nova force. She was supposed to be in a safe job somewhere, not in the military. He finds out she joined to find out what really happened to her brother. She always wanted answers but no one would tell her. She's going to find out for herself. Trinity is on a base that is under investigation. This is where the vault is that has the DNA that was stolen to create the cyborgs. No one knows how it was done or by whom. She has only been there about five years. She has been trying to figure it out but not getting anywhere. V.I.D.A., the AI computer that practically runs the whole base, is always there to keep her up to speed on everything. Trinity has been told the Nova Force team coming in is to have access to anything & everyone they need to conduct this investigation. As this goes on Dax gets back with Trinity to get the woman he lost. After a while he does tell her what happened with her brother. He had saved Dax's life & gotten killed in the process. They keep comparing notes, getting nowhere fast. They find out someone is hacking V.I.D.A. & trying to mess things up, spying on them & erasing files. Later they find out it is V.I.D.A. who had been trying to sabotage the investigation, after she tries to kill Trinity & poison the rest of the Nova Force with a toxin. They find Dr. Clarke frozen to death down in the vault. He had been on base from the beginning so he knew what was going on. Since he had been betrayed by his mentor & V.I.D.A. he recorded a video telling about what happened & how the AI was a highly intelligent computer. It was constantly learning on it's own & started the thefts & sales of the DNA on it's own. He gave a more detailed report about all the AI & his mentor had done before he left. He added that V.I.D.A. had a sister just like her out there with the other Doctor. Dr. Clarke made sure to include what else they had been involved with before he died. Trinity joined with Dax & his Nova Force so they could keep trying to find who else had been in with Dr. Clarke covering up the thefts V.I.D.A. did of the DNA to make the cyborgs. It's a great story.
Operation Phoenix is a new series by Ms. Hayes, but still set in The Drift universe. Lieutenant Trinity West is in charge of her base, one that holds a lot of scientists working on secrets. Now her base is being investigated for thefts from years ago from the Vault of the Fallen. Commander Dax Rossi leads his team of the Nova Force, going in to solve problems and keep everyone safe. Trinity and Dax have a history that didn’t end well, so coming face to face was a surprise. As they slowly tear apart the secrets to their past and to the thief, they come together. The closer they get, the more strain everyone feels, and trust starts to erode. Will Dax and Trinity find the thief and find their happiness?
Wow, this book had me hooked! The plot line was exciting and engaging, with lots of secrets and mysteries that had me guessing. Dax and Trinity had a complicated past, full of young love, broken hearts, and a death that rocked them further apart. As they dealt with their history, it was thrilling to read about their current relationship, how they were still so connected and able to have fun and both so full of that hesitant love. I’m not going to lie, I was not expecting the ending or the identity of the thief, which was awesome!! Ms. Hayes is also brilliant at writing action scenes with clear details and emotion. I loved reading Dax and Trinity get their second chance at love, I loved the little references to The Drift series (but nothing that would overwhelm a new reader), and I already can’t wait to read more in the series!
This is an awesome beginning for this series. I am sorry to say I never read The Drift series, but if it is like this book I need to rethink that. I absolutely loved this book. I loved that I had several theories about the whodunit and every one of them were wrong. I hate when I can guess the story. Trinity West is strong, determined, and confident which makes her an outstanding base commander. She is the nerd whisperer, perfect cross between a scientist and soldier. Thefts of genetic material was stolen from this high security base and it took years before they were even discovered. Trinity is determined to solve the mystery but Nova Force is sent in to investigate. Dax Rossi has known (and loved) Trinity for years. He was her brother, Travis', best friend. After Travis was killed, Dax blamed himself. Imagine his surprise when he and his team arrive to takeover the investigation and he finds Trinity in charge. They need to solve this theft, fast before heads roll. The Nova Force series is one of my new favorite series. So much action, it just makes the romantic times that much better. If you like mysteries, military stories and romance this series is the trifecta. I can't wait for the next book. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
A tight knit group of soldiers and the extremely competent (and wary, closed-off) base commander their leader loves. To say Dax and Trinity's first encounter with one another after he left her high and dry is tense would be entirely correct.
On the plus side, Trinity's connection to one of their comrades (and the way she ties Dax up in knots) leads to Nova Force accepting her pretty easily. While they're there to investigate something Trinity would very much like to solve herself, she's smart enough to know she can find more answers working with Nova Force than against them.
Dax doesn't disagree and he's all for sharing information. Up to a point. There are some things that he can't share because it's classified (plus there's the whole thing where he has to clear Trinity of any part in the thefts) which drives a bit of a wedge between these two lovebirds. In the end, though, they figure things out and work together to find justice.
Kick-butt soldiers, a second chance at happiness, and a little danger and intrigue. I dig the men and women who find their way to the Drift and the Nova Force crew are just FUN to watch in action.
A great start to a new series by Susan Hayes!! Mystery, suspense, and heat. What else could I ask for? This book drew me in and had me hooked from the beginning. There are a couple of parts that reference the Drift series but you do not have to read it first. I loved the characters and how they interact. I could see this story playing out in my mind. There was so much detail that I thought I was there.
Lieutenant West's (Trinity) past comes back to haunt her. Her brother's best friend was the only man to ever break her heart and he is now in her research base, taking over her investigation. SPARKS FLY! Of course there is an HEA ... but... getting there, well that is a very interesting journey!
I'm always very wary of second chance stories, they are rarely done as well as I would like or as believable. Trust is a very fragile thing and once broken, getting it back takes a lot longer than the timeline of one book normally allow for. Susan Hayes does a very good job of it though, I must say. She didn't fall into the easy out "near death = sudden forgiveness and trust". I enjoyed this story, I love the fact that Trinity demands respect and gets it, she doesn't cut Dax an inch of slack, and that's the best part. I like to imagine couples who's stories I've enjoyed reading about, ten years down the road, and it's honestly not often where I can see them still together or flourishing, but Dax and Trinity is one of them, because she's just as alpha as he is.
Lieutenant Trinity West is the Victor Base commander and has been trying to find the person who broke into the Vault of the Fallen to steal DNA used in the cloning of Cyborgs. Commander Dax Rossi is the Team Leader of Nova Force Three and has been sent to take over the investigation of the theft and has no idea that Trinity the woman he loved and sister of his best friend who died saving his life is the base commander. Trinity is not pleased when she sees the man who broke her heart and he is also here to take over her investigation. Can these two people get along to discover who is behind the theft and will they also forgive what happened in the past? I would highly recommend this book.
The book was fine until it came to the sex scenes. Then it was so 21st century it hurt. I'm sure if we come up with fraxxing and veth that there will be other words for body parts. And certainly there will be other words for a disobedient submissive. Brat and bratting is something very popular now but the book isn't a good representation of the dynamic. It's a vanilla version of the idea. I'm guessing Hayes thought adding some BDSM would increase the spice but hasn't experienced it first hand. Cause spanking you feel, the heat and burn of your abused buttock is the whole point. Pain increases sensitivity the trick is just enough.
I enjoyed this one a lot more than I thought I would. The blurb sounded interesting but not enough to make me want to dive right into it. I just added it to my TBR list. Today I picked it up and once I started reading I couldn’t stop. Dax and Trinity were a power couple that let past mistakes and lack of communication interfere with a magnetism they shared as children. When they meet again years later the draw is still there but they need to start communicating better. But in the meantime, there’s a mysterious theft to solve and a dangerous enemy to unmask. It was fascinating, intriguing and hot!
It’s taken me a couple of days to put into words how much I enjoyed this book. A new series set in The Drift Universe takes the reader on a roller coaster ride. Susan has weaved a story with twists and turns that shocks the reader when they think they’ve figured it all out only to leave them scratching their heads and commenting to oneself... well didn’t see that one coming. A cold case that has far reaching consequences, danger hidden in plain sight and a second chance at love. As usual Susan you blow the reader out of the stratosphere.
This was an awesome series opener! I really like how well I could relate to the characters and especially liked how it took time for these 2 to have their second chance at romance come to fruition. There's a fab mystery to solve, past trauma to deal with and enough steam to make anyone happy. Nova Force is an interesting mix of eclectic people and I can't wait to see who's next to fall in love - and what adventures will surround the team while it's happening ;)
Fascinating mystery that had me stumped until the end swirling around a smoking second chance romance. Good fun!
I received a free Advanced Readers Copy of this book for a voluntary review. This is an excellent futuristic fantasy book. Dax and Trinity face unknown forces trying to hide the truth of some missing material from a secure base. Now they both may be in danger due to the mystery, deceptions, misleading information they constantly reveal. The story was a rollercoaster of emotions with the depth of the characters personalities and their interactions with one another. You have to read this book the ending will throw you for a loop. Totally unexpected.. A great read.
This is a well written story about Lt. Trinity West, the base she commands and her one long lost love, CMDR Dax Rossi. Trinity has been investigating a theft of DNA from a secret vault on the base she currently commands. She hasn't had any luck in finding any answers so Nova Force is brought in to investigate. The Commander is Dax Rossi who was her brother's best friend and her one long lost love. They reconnect while the investigation gets into who the thief is and the results are deadly. There's lots of action, some unexpected results and a happy ending.
I really enjoyed the characters and the world-building that was in this story. The Nove Force is an elite space law enforcement group ensuring corporations are not up to their regular shady business. Trinity is stationed on a top-secret base where high-tech science is being developed. However, when special DNA goes missing, NOVA Force shows up, led by none other than her childhood crush, Dax. Dax shared one night with her and left her cold. He was her deceased brother's best friend, and she wanted to get to the bottom of what happened.
A masterfully told story! I’ve been entrapped by a poignant back-story, a well-told mystery, a fantastic cast of characters and a beautiful romance. I adore this book! It’s intense. I followed the clues, speculating about ‘who’ and ‘how’ and still didn’t come to the correct conclusion. I am pleased that it has connections with The Drift (I love that place!). It’s a superb beginning to a new series. I voluntarily reviewed an author’s copy of this book.
njoyed this book quite a lot! I am a big fan of The Drift series by this author and this book starts a new spin off series from it.
Lots of new characters to look forward to reading about and new information revealed about this world. Good chemistry between the 2 main characters and enjoyed their story. It was action packed and steamy (as usual) - no disappointment here.
Very good book. This is about Trinity West, Lieutenant working in a top secret research lab and someone is stealing DNA from her. She wants to know who and why. In comes Commander Dax Rossi, and he is to go to Lieutenant Trinity's lab to see who is stealing from her. These two have a previous history together and they parted on bad terms. Interesting plot and kept me interested right from the very beginning. Recommend.
If you're looking for a straight forward romance novel with little excitement - this ain't it! Climb on board for the ride of a lifetime! Between past heartache and rekindling romance, twisty puzzles and who done its, and a team of investigators who leave no stone or AI system unturned, be prepared to order in pizza for dinner. You will not want to put this down.
Crazy AI. A theft of genetic material. A meeting 10 years late. Trinity West lost her big brother in a training g accident. But she knows it's a lie. The on!y person who knows thereby refuses to tellbher. And he was her brother's best friend. Nerves boyfriend. They were kids. Dax loved Trinity for years. But once her big brother found out, Dad and Travis had a minor confrontation. Dad broke up with Trinity. Now they meet again. Things dont go well. Loved it!!!!
First read by this author and I really enjoyed Dax & Trinity. After having lost contact for 10 years they finally see each other again and Trinity is not happy. Not knowing what happened between her and Dax has wanting to stay angry, but also wanting to know what happened to him. I thought the story was refreshing to read and I do look to reading more of this author's work.
This is a solid 3+ sci-fi story with a good mystery and a bit of romance. Not a lot of shoot-em-ups, more intrigue and sneaky evil. I was able to figure out the core secret fairly early on, but then I read a lot of mysteries too. It was still a clever twist, and enabled several red-herrings. The romance was more of a side-story that leveraged the intensity.
This is tangential to a Cyborg series, and I'm sure future stories will overlap there.
Secret lovers, Trinity and Dax are torn apart, the circumstances behind the death of her brother a secret he cannot share. Angry and suspicious, she forges a path to find the truth. When their paths cross again, she is the one under suspicion and he is seeking answers. This book is full of plot twists, danger, and simmering tensions. But whenever they are close to each other sparks fly and the attraction cannot be denied or delayed.
I finished this book feeling good and looking for more. So am definitely going to start Operation Cobalt after writing this review. I am a Susan Hayes fan. I have read her Drift books, and because of that, I wasn't very surprised to find out who the bad guys really were in this story. While solving the crime is interesting, this story was definitely about more Trinity and Dax finding each other again, and learning to communicate with each other. Well worth my time and $$
I loved this first book in the new series. It is an offshoot of the Drift series. The characters are great they were exciting and intelligent, and there was just enough heat to make it a spectacular read. The overall story is also exciting and will keep you waiting for the next book. Great job Ms. Hayes.
Surprised that I liked this one. The only drawback was the number of characters with multiple names. Sometimes they were referred to by first name, sometimes by last, and then of course they had some strange nickname that was used from time to time. It made it a bit difficult to follow, but since they were minor characters it didn’t make a huge dent in the following of the plot.
