After a few chapters of cute hangouts, the former street toughs have a falling out that can only be solved by fists . . . Well, no, there are other ways, but street fighters gonna street fight. Gosh darn those humorous and charming street fighters.

This was such a fun addition to this manga series! I’m really happy with the turn the story took.

Tbh the main reason this is getting 4 and not 5🌟 is because Takebe’s realization about her feelings for Soramori came really suddenly. This series has felt very slow-burn, and this realization of feelings just felt a bit awkwardly reached.

Still! I really enjoyed the volume. I loved seeing the two of them in their unconventional date where they end up playing with a couple of kids 😂 I loved to see Takebe wanting to get something thoughtful for Soramori as a birthday gift. And it was adorably hilarious that once Takebe realized her feelings, she wanted to fight Soramori and demonstrate dominance 😂

Honestly, the two of them are weirdos, and I adore them. Tbh, I headcanon Takebe as Autistic because she just gives that vibe with her approach to the world. The way she understands things is very uniquely her.

Anyway. I’m glad I finally picked this up instead of putting it off for no reason like I typically do 💀

Woo, it’s getting better! Apart from that one chapter with that Loli (although it ended on a good note), I really liked this volume! It was fun.

Seeing girls fight like guys is actually really cool, but even more so when they enjoy it.

Good slow-moving romance as these two come to understand each other a bit more, I love how this allows them to become committed to each other as they are, rather than as they think they need to change themselves.

Not great at communicating, but it's kind of endearing. They're trying.

Takebe is a terrible sort-of girlfriend, and she kind of knows it. The good news is that since she and Soramori aren't dating too seriously, the stakes are low. The bad news is that the longer these two adults hang out together, the more they rely on one another to get more out of life. So, what happens when they fight? What happens when a casual insult goes too far? What happens when a presumption of common domesticity doesn't sink in until it's too late?

CATCH THESE HANDS v3 hardens its gaze against the dimming sunset in hopes of poaching from this hour of pearl a glimpse romantic insight. By now, Takebe is boorish and listless, and Soramori is skittish like a puppy dog. The question of whether they take their relationship to the next level (whatever that level is), could be a recipe for more effective storytelling or doom the manga to its genre conventions. That is, will these two characters start acting like adults, or will they continue playing in the sandbox until the sun goes down?

The current volume makes a better attempt at maturing this struggling duo than the previous work. Takebe invites Soramori out for an evening dinner (Takebe: "We're having a grown-up date today."); there's talk about purchasing respectful, adult-focused birthday gifts; both women entreat Miharu and Maria, former biker gang members, for advice; and best of all, Takebe challenges Soramori to another fistfight. Such are the demands of stories whose emotional silhouettes are obvious from the outset.

The bittersweet nature of a manga whose characters are aware of the right thing to do, yet refuse to do it, rarely feels so profound as when characters knowingly threaten to break their mold. CATCH THESE HANDS v3 almost gets there. Not quite. But close. Takebe, for example, realizes that being in a relationship with another woman isn't what's holding her back from being the person she wants to be; what's holding her back is the cowardice that invariably surfaces when she refuses to challenge her anxiety over the matter. If being with Soramori gives her the fuzzies and gives her comfort, then why not pursue that relationship to its fullest extent?

CATCH THESE HANDS v3 exposes the musings of adults who are afraid of being adults. It's a simple and well-tread premise, but occasionally earns its context. The childish misgivings these two characters must expend before coming into their own are awkward and vapid, but shed them they must should they ever find what they seek in themselves or in each other.

September 2023. Sapphic September categories: part of a series, comfy, quick read, 2023 (for final volume).
A cute and light series about two women who had been rival delinquents in their teens. Now adults, one of them challenged the other to a battle with the agreement that they have to date if she wins.
A real grump x sunshine situation, with a comedic premise.

I felt that volume 2 in particular suffered from lack of focus and just too much repetitiveness of the nice MC being anxious and overthinking things. I’d say volume 2-4 could’ve been 2 volumes instead of 3, with the younger cousin drama removed entirely.
Overall I liked it quite a bit, but it didn’t keep the tighter momentum of volume 1. Worth a borrow, and volume 4 was stronger and won me back over.

3.5

an improvement on the last volume with a good dose of humor that had me laughing out loud at points. still tired of the subplot with the cousin but luckily its a pretty small part of this volume. the last several chapters really made this worth it and i hope the relationship continues to progress in the next volume!

I dropped the series after finishing this volume. The funny moments are too few and far between to save it. Character development is slow and the “romance” is almost nonexistent. There are far better yuri manga out there you could read.

Okay this volume was so cute!! And funny?! I laughed out loud a few times especially with that freaking GORILLA! Lol

We really got to see Takebe grow in this one! She has been the slow of this slow burn, so it was nice seeing some progress on her end!

I really enjoyed this series, it has hilarious characters and a very sweet romance and happy ending.

I looooved Takebe Ayako’s character, she was so funny and honestly cool. I loved her permanent scowl even when she was enjoying herself, and her continual consternation.

Highly recommend!

I left it far too long between volumes so I couldn’t remember any plot, but I was here for the vibes.
