Schnittjer does a great job thinking through the biblical text of the Torah to give a lot of literary background. I wouldn't say this book feels like a book that's focused on the text or background as much as a nice mix. There are times where I wish it was more in depth in either direction, but not necessarily what I wanted at any given time. That said, it's an excellent resource that I greatly appreciated.

Gary has a way of seeing the Pentateuch's stories in a way that's unique and always insightful. I esp appreciate his intertextual observations. This 2nd ed is a valuable upgrade as well.
