The Castle Keepers

Rate this book
Leedswick Castle has housed the Alnwick family in the English countryside for generations, despite a family curse determined to destroy their legacy and erase them from history.

1870. After a disastrous dinner at the Astor mansion forces her to flee New York in disgrace, socialite Beatrice Holbrook knows her performance in London must be a triumph. When she catches the eye of Charles Alnwick, one of the town’s most enviably-titled bachelors, she prepares to attempt a social coup and become the future Marchioness of Northridge. When tragedy and scandal strike the Alnwick family, Beatrice must assume the role of a lifetime: that of her true, brave self.

1917. Artist Elena Hamilton arrives in Northumberland determined to transform a soldier’s wounds into something beautiful. Tobias Alnwick’s parents have commissioned a lifelike mask to help their son return to his former self after battle wounds partially destroyed his face. But Elena doesn’t see a man who needs fixing—she sees a man who needn’t hide. Yet secrets from their past threaten to chase away the peace they’ve found in each other and destroy the future they’re creating.

1945. Alec Alnwick returns home from the war haunted but determined to leave death and destruction behind. With the help of Brigitta Mayr, the brilliant young psychoanalyst whose correspondence was a lifeline during his time on the Western Front, he reconstructs his family’s large estate into a rehabilitation center for similarly wounded soldiers. Now Alec’s efforts may be the only chance to redeem his family legacy—and break the curse on the Alnwick name—once and for all.

The Castle Keepers is made up of a trio of novellas written by historical fiction authors Aimie K. Runyan, J’nell Ciesielski and Rachel McMillan. It follows three generations of the Alnwick family, they own crumbling Leedswick castle and it’s near the English village of Birchwick in Northumberland.

In 1870: American socialite Beatrice Holbrook has a disastrous season in New York looking for a husband, her rich parents take her to England and here she meets Charles Alnwick. The quiet and dignified man with a limp, she and Charles marry and become the future Marquess and Marchioness of Northridge. English aristocrats married wealthy American heiresses, it topped up their families dwindling fortunes and the women were given the nickname" dollar princesses."

1917: Elena Hamilton is an artist and she uses her skills to paint masks for men who have been disfigured in The Great War and she’s asked to travel to Leedswick castle for a private commission. Tobias Alnwick lost an eye and left side of his face was severely damaged in the war, he’s extremely self-conscious and he’s the grandson of Charles and Beatrice.

1914: Alec Alnwick has returned from the Second World War, he's Tobias and Elena's son and is plagued by horrific nightmares. Doctor Brigitta Mayr, is a Viennese psychoanalyst, she visits Leedswick castle and here she and Alec create a rehabilitation center for men suffering from physiological issues. The men help in the castles gardens and do woodwork and the hope is one day they will be able to return to their families.

The three novellas focus is on the lives and brides of the heirs of Leedswick castle, the strained relationships they all had with the people living in Birchwick and the truth behind the scandal that caused this? The castle gardens are a main feature of each story, one section is both beautiful and deadly. I really enjoyed the first two novellas, I was starting to lose interest while reading the third and it's a shame. I have really enjoyed previous historical fiction books by Aimie K. Runyan, J’nell Ciesielski and Rachel McMillan, I will stick to reading their single compositions in the future and three and a half stars from me. Thanks to Harper Muse and NetGalley for my digital copy of The Castle Keepers and in exchange for an honest review. Please read the book yourself and makeup your own mind.

Three favorite writers. Three timelines. Three gorgeous novellas linked by one British castle and a family cursed for generations, impacted by war and maybe, just maybe, the power of love to heal.

1870: Beatrice, an American Dollar Princess, marries Charles, a British Marquess with ailing Leedswick Castle, a poison garden, and an even more toxic family. Will the couple find love despite secrets, murder, and a village that hates them?

1917: Tobias is left with terrible facial scars during WWI. His parents hire Elena, a free-spirited artist with blazing red hair, to paint a mask to hide his injuries. Will she be able to release him from his self-imposed internal prison and equally imposing castle walls?

1945: Alec survives WWII but is crippled by shell-shock and seeks help from a famous Austrian psychoanalyst and his niece, Brigitta. He opens a convalescent center in the castle for those similarly afflicted, and hires Brigitta as a therapist. Will her treatments heal them, especially Alec, who may feel more than respect for her, as she might feel for him?

Highly recommended for lovers of historical romance and women's fiction that flow like honey and long stay with you.

THE CASTLE KEEPERS by Aimie K. Runyan, J’nell Ciesielski, and Rachel McMillan is an enchanting novella anthology of historical romances featuring three generations of Alnwick heirs and is set at the “cursed” Leedswick castle in rugged Northumberland England.

Each novella, besides the historical romance plot, had an interesting hook that made them more than just a romance. The first set in 1870, The Truth Keepers, set up the premise of the “curse” that runs through all three novellas. It also had a heroine that was a “Dollar Princess” and a mystery plot involving the castle’s Poison Garden. In the 1917 setting, The Memory Keepers, the heroine is an artist who paints masks for disfigured Tommies returning from WWI. The last novella set in 1945, The Dream Keepers, has a heroine with psychological training who works with the returned heir to help soldiers covalence in the rural castle setting and offers psychological analysis. Wars and the “Curse” have affected each Alnwick heir, and each will find a love that may be what they need to heal, learn to love, and break the curse.

I really enjoyed each novella in this anthology. The authors were able to pull me right into each romance and time period with well developed characters and interesting and varied heroines and plots.

I recommend this enjoyable historical romance anthology.

I received this audiobook as a gift from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not sure what to expect from this collection of three novellas set in a "cursed" Castle in England, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The stories are well-written, engaging, and full of historical details and romance. The narrator did a great job of bringing the characters and settings to life.

I was captivated by each story and the characters' journeys. I loved how the authors incorporated historical facts and events into their plots and made me feel like I was visiting the castle with them. I also liked how each story had a different tone and mood.

I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who loves historical fiction, romance, and castles. It was a wonderful listening experience that surprised me in the most incredible way. I couldn't stop listening to this book and I'm sure you won't either.

Three of the best historical fiction authors combined their talents to create this compelling book. Each of the authors has written a novella in their own distinct voice to bring this multigenerational family saga to life. I was transported to an estate in the English countryside beginning in 1870, through the horrors and aftermath of two World Wars. Each story is one of bravery and love, of healing and redemption, and a mystery that permeates each generation.

Set in three different timelines, three authors pen novellas which tell one family's story, with the intriguing link of a family curse that has haunted the family for generations.Three generations of the Alnwick men have fought in different wars. Each man longs for healing from the wounds of war, physical and emotional.

The novellas are set in 1870, 1917 and 1945. I absolutely loved the individual stories and the power of love to heal as each heroine brought her own unique gift and personality to Leedswick Castle. My favorite story was the second one set in 1917. I love learning something new, and was intrigued by the fashioning of masks for soldiers who survived severe facial injuries. I adored Elena's free spirit, full of strength and spunk.

Realizing the authors were held to the word count of a novella instead of a novel, my personal opinion is that some of the plot lines were a little rushed. But I felt as if there was good character development, with the expected romance developing at a natural pace.

Fans of historical fiction will find this novella collection entertaining.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher through Netgalley and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

The Castle Keepers is three novellas written by three fantastic authors about a curse on a family during three different time periods. All three stories have strong women who work hard to help the family heal from its past.

1870 - Socialite Beatrice has failed to be accepted into society in New York city and moves with her parents to London to find a husband. It was very popular during this time period for rich women to marry someone in London - it was a win-win - she got a title and a place in society and he got money from her dowry to help their dwindling family fortunes. She met and married Lord Alnwick, heir to the Marquess of Northridge. He had been injured in the war and when she arrived at his home, she found that he was not treated well by his parents and younger brother. His mother felt that the younger brother should be the heir and she spread rumors about him to try to diminish his standing. When the father died, under mysterious circumstances, the mom and younger brother made sure that he was arrested for the murder. It was only through Beatrice's strength and love that the real truth came out.

1917 - Elena, an artist arrives at the castle to make a real-life mask to cover the damage done to Tobias's face during World War I. She is a free spirit and he wants to hide behind his wounded face and not see other people. People from her past begin to make problems for Elena so she has two battles to fight - one against people in her past and the other in trying to convince Tobias that his life is not over and there is still a lot to be thankful for.

1945 - World War II has just ended and Alec returns to the family castle. He has what we would refer to today as PTSD and is still suffering from the destruction of the war. With the help of Brigetta, a psychoanalyst that he corresponded with during the war, they turn the castle into a rehabilitation center for soldiers who are unable to get back into the real world due to mental trauma from the war. Will he be able to end the curse that has affected this castle and family for years?

I enjoyed all three stories and liked the way that they were tied together. All three had men who were harmed by the wars that they fought in and women who were brave and strong and able to help their man achieve peace in their lives.

This collection of intergenerational stories by three different authors provided interesting snapshots of different eras of history: the gilded age, the Great War, and post WWII. They followed three women and their love stories, all of whom fell in love with men who belonged to the family of the incredible Leedswick Castle, which has been haunted by a curse. In the first story, Beatrice comes to England as a wealthy American looking for a husband and marries Marquis Charles Alnwick, not realizing the scandal behind his name and castle. In the second story, Elena is hired as an artist to create a mask for Tobias, whose face was disfigured in the Great War. Instead, she shows him that he does not need to hide his scars. In the final story, a soldier haunted by PTSD creates a rehab center in the castle and is partially rehabilitated himself with the help of Brigita, a psychoanalyst. Each story is connected to the other by generations of the Alnwick family and the Leedswick Castle curse.

This was a fun collection of short historical stories, made even more interesting by the true historical facts. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed some of the stories, particularly the first one. I did find the different storytelling styles a little jolting since they were written by different authors (such as the two POVs in some stories while just one in others), but I liked the details connected through the three stories from the different generations. If you like intergenerational novels, you may enjoy this one as it does not flash back and forth, which usually annoys me.

As a whole, this collection of stories was lovely, and I loved the way each selection connected to the others!

The Truth Keepers: Aimie K. Runyan

3.5⭐️

This was a cute marriage-of-convenience story—Charles needs Beatrice’s money & she needs his title. American “Dollar Princesses” are a fairly new topic of interest for me, so it was lovely to learn more.

My heart ached for Beatrice because of her overbearing mother, but I did love her father!

This story sets the stage for the others, plus it features a castle! Charles & Beatrice were sweet, but they didn’t get a ton of time together, which I missed. The mystery & family curse angle was interesting, though the ending felt a bit rushed to me.

Content: mild language (1x each of God’s name irreverently, b*stard, and d*mn)
.
.
.
The Memory Keepers: J’nell Ciesielski

4.5⭐️

Since this was a WW1 story, I was fairly certain I would love it—and I did! It was my favourite of the three. 😍

Elena & Tobias were very sweet together. And I had never heard of creating masks and such for burn victims. So fascinating!!

Content: 1x b*stard
.
.
.
The Dream Keepers: Rachel McMillan

3⭐️

This story dealt with post-WW2 and its aftermath, particularly the mental health of soldiers.

There’s quite a bit of psychology & Freudian theory covered in the story. And while I can’t say I agree with all of the theories, they are accurate for the era.

I liked Alec & Brigitta together, and their partnership in creating a safe space for recovering soldiers was beautiful.

Sweet Romance

Three stand out voices in historical fiction tells three stories that carry a unifying thread and theme about the Ainwick family, through the generations 1870, 1917, and 1945, with the backdrop of the Leedswick Castle and the Poison Garden. This family saga tells the tale of how the families in each of the stories have been affected by the war and a curse. I love the historical details so unique in each of the stories, whether it’s trauma, medical advancements, the social constructs of the time, beliefs, lack of information and misinformation, which all played a part affecting this family which represents how it was then.

I found this read has exceeded my expectations in the way the stories weaved together with a clear unifying theme. The characters were compelling to read about, and I was invested in their stories that had enough intrigue and drama that had me turning those pages.

I’m not gonna lie, I was originally drawn to this book by the beautiful cover, and then the interesting storyline. I love a good generational story, and this one did not disappoint! I loved all three stories and all three couples. The romances were very sweet and had me swooning! I also enjoyed the mystery element each story had. All three authors have such a lovely writing style. It flowed as one book in three parts more than three separate stories. I definitely see myself rereading this in the future!

Content warnings; very mild language (one use of the “d” word and two uses of the slang for illegitimate) (I wouldn’t consider this Christian fiction for this reason, but otherwise clean)

The Castle Keepers, Three Stories, Three novellas somehow connected by a family and castle that had many memories to hide.

1870 Beatrice, was an American married to a British whose family was not what she really expected, she lived through many disdains and rejections as well as many secrets that kept lurking behind the castle walls.

1917 The story of Tobias who carry the scars and the evidence of WWl. wanting to keep himself hiding in a castle from the rest of the world, his parents try to help him by hiring someone to somehow fix what he detested the most, that side of his face that made him lose all confidence and happiness in life.

1945 The story of Alec, is a survivor of WWII, he also carries the scars of what that terrible episode left on him, leaving him crippled and unable to move forward with his life, seeking help to be able to maybe see some of that hope he once had, by opening a place where similar cases and people can come and have decent and proper care with a therapist that can help many but mainly Himself.

This was a great ride, I really enjoyed each story and character, and I love how they connected even if the stories were so far apart in time.

The Narrations by Ann Marie Gideon were great, I enjoyed so much her voice and the way she brought the characters to life.

Thank you, NetGalley and Harper Muse, for the advanced copy of The Castle Keepers in exchange for my honest review.

A unique set of novellas featuring several generations who inherit an estate in northern England. Fans of clean historical fiction with mystery and romance should enjoy this one.
"...life is indeed worth living no matter the pain."
I enjoyed reading each part of the story and wondered how each one would blend into the next. The authors did a good job bringing it all together, tying the family tree with a line of strong, brave women who grow to care deeply for their wounded warriors. The PTSD theme plays a large part in their struggles, as the men bear scars on the inside as well as the outside.
"She made him want to believe again."
I was drawn to each of them, especially the WW1 veteran and the artist. The mysteries added intrigue and suspenseful moments, with some action. The romances that developed were all different, tender and sincere, with some sighworthy moments.
A satisfying read overall! 4.5 stars

Three different stories set in 1870, 1917, and 1945, all revolving around a castle in England and its inhabitants.

Each of the three authors wrote one of the stories and, luckily, managed to seamlessly connected them through the Alnwick family, who have owned the castle for generations. The rich histories and mysteries surrounding the characters were intriguing and kept me interested. It’s really three short stories combined to make one novel which made it seem to fly by quickly.

While I did enjoy the time period and the cozy mysteries, I think the book could have used a bit more editing. There were words and phrases, especially in the first story, that would have befitted from some trimming. Other than that I enjoyed this quick cozy read!

Thank you Harper Muse for the #alc via Netgalley.

Three generations of the Alnwick family, a crumbling castle in Northumberland, and a family curse! I was so excited to listen to the audiobook version of this novella collection by three amazing authors. I loved the way the stories were all connected. Each generation of the Alnwick men has to deal with injuries and the aftermath of war. The women who love them are brought to Leeds castle for various reasons, but each must help the men overcome their pasts, and solve a mystery.

In 1870, New York socialite Beatrice Holbrook is trying to save face after a disastrous debut. Her family takes her to England hoping their wealth will snag them a British title. She meets Charles Alnwick, future Marquess of Northridge who suffers from wounds sustained in India, and rumors about him abound. They become fast friends and she agrees to a mutually beneficial marriage of convenience. When Charles is accused of a heinous crime, Beatrice must gather her courage to defend her husband.

In 1917, Tobias Alnwick sustained life altering injuries in WWI. His parents have commissioned artist Elena Hamilton to create a life like face mask to cover his disfigured face. Elena is the sunshine to Tobias’ grumpiness and she brings him much needed laughter and enjoyment. But when her past comes back in a threatening way, it will take all of Tobias’ courage to save her.

In 1945, Alec Alnwick is suffering from PTSD. He calls on the beautiful, intelligent Brigitta Mayr, a psychoanalyst, to help him turn his crumbling family castle into a rehabilitation center for those who similarly suffer. As Alec tries to break the curse from the past, it seems his health is in jeopardy and distinguishing truth from reality becomes more difficult. Can Brigitta help him solve the mystery before it’s too late?

I loved all three of these stories and how they each revolved around the mysterious Leeds castle. Each of the romances was so well done and they all tied together brilliantly. I loved the gardens, even the deadly one and how they featured in each story. The mysteries in each time period added a suspenseful element, as well as the supposed curse that bound them all.

The audiobook version was fantastic! The narrator distinguished each story and character in a unique way. I enjoyed how she voiced both male and female characters. She injected just the right amount of emotion and made it an easy to listen to audiobook.

Highly recommend this intriguing, enjoyable, historical novella collection! I received an advanced complimentary listener copy from the publisher. All opinions are completely my own and voluntarily given.

Over the years I have enjoyed each of these authors on an independent basis. I love all of their respective books individually and I was so thrilled to see that these three powerhouse writers were teaming up to write a collaborative novel! Obviously no one had to twist my arm to get me to review this one, it was an absolute no brainer!

Sometimes collaborative novels can be difficult. I have only really seen a couple of writing teams successful with it. It can be hard blending different writing styles let alone character visions. I believe this is the first collaboration for these three authors as well which can sometimes bring its own set of challenges but I had so much confidence in these three authors that I knew I was going to read something special!

All three authors are so strong and have written such great novels prior to this do if you read this book and enjoy it, then you should certainly check out their own individual books as they are all so wonderful. But if you are looking for a book that feels a little more ‘saga ish’ and sweeping, this is a multigenerational novel with lots to enjoy, devour and unpack! I really really loved my time with the characters and plots!

After reading some other historical fiction novels that were more mystery in nature, I was ready for something more sweeping and saga-ish. I love generational novels with complex characters, twisty plots and historical details. The first thing I noticed about this novel when I started it was it would cover three big time periods that I am a fan of—late Victorian, Edwardian/WWI, and WWII. A bulk of historical fiction novels are set during this time, but for me it never gets old! I was especially excited to read the WWI part, that is my favorite historical setting and I was eager to get to that section of the book. I was surprised that I ended up like Beatrice’s (Victorian) story a little better than Elena’s (WWI). For some reason I felt more of a connection with Beatrice than Elena. The story really focuses on the heirs of the Alnwick family of which the women in their life are part of and for me, I just liked Beatrice and Charles’s story the best. The others were good and enjoyable but for me, Beatrice stole the show.

The book reads more like three novellas which was fine but I would have liked to have seen a little more blending of the plots. Novellas are so hard, you have the draw readers in super fast AND wrap things up in a condensed number of pages and I felt like the authors struggled with the length of each story to execute all the things they wanted to incorporate. That’s not to say the book wasn’t good—I did really really really enjoy it but having read their own independent works, I can see the areas they were struggling in. I liked the constant of the Alnwick family and the castle, but it might have been easier to somehow write three different characters within the same time period of the house? I am not sure, but I think that might have helped make things a little easier to expand on within the shortened novel. Or maybe just make the novel longer to give the authors more time to develop and expand their characters and stories in the way they had hoped.

Overall this was a good novel and I hope these three authors team up again for more! Sometimes the first go around can be a little trial and error so I am hoping they write more collaborative works in the future. I did enjoy my time with this book and felt satisfied with how it all wrapped up. I loved the stories and characters but I wish we had more time to develop some of those stories to their fullest potential. If you love historical fiction with romance though, you can’t go wrong with these three authors. They are strong and seasoned writers and I think you will enjoy this collaboration plus their individual works. Reading this book made me long for more historical family saga novels and I can’t wait for more like this!

The Castle Keepers is an enjoyable story collection which shares story elements and a fascinating Northumberland family castle setting. Through three different generations all affected by war (the Bhutan War, WWI, & WWII), the men of the Alnwick family battle trauma and a family curse to find their way to happiness and love with three influential, strong heroines.

1870 – The Truth Keepers by Aimie K. Runyan

This story set on the cusp of the Gilded Age features an American heiress or “Dollar Princess” seeking position and personal solace on a new continent: England. It introduces the Alnwick family well and sets up a legacy which has great influence on the subsequent stories in the collection. I like the balance of practicality and independence Beatrice finds in a match with Charles, though their early challenges are tricky and full of intrigue.

1917 – The Memory Keepers by J’nell Ciesielski

The Memory Keepers has an artist of a heroine, Elena, trying to aid in the WWI aftermath with her skills in painting masks for disfigured soldiers. Sent on a mission to the north and to assist a reclusive heir to Leedswick Castle, she instead finds Tobias Alnwick to be her match in wits and camaraderie, offering him a compassion that draws him out of his dark place and into a vibrant world. Ciesielski’s voice shines in this situation, depicting a Downton Abbey-like era with aplomb and a bit of an adventure while Elena and Tobias banter AND contend with some foreboding visitors.

1945 – The Dream Keepers by Rachel McMillan

I have two names for you: Alec and Brigitta! Alec Alnwick is just returning from WWII and dealing with all the mental strain that entails. His letters exchanged with Brigitta, a lovely, intelligent aspiring psychoanalyst, are the beginning of a relationship leading to a respite spent at his home, the castle. While Alec’s fellow soldiers gather in an effort to restore and adjust to civilian life, Brigitta’s presence is a balm to all as she offers her expertise in analysis to all — and a wonderfully deeper friendship and connection to Alec besides. In true McMillan style, this story checks all her boxes to include a friends-to-lovers romance that compliments and strengthens, music and waltzes, a Viennese element (Brigitta herself), a cat!, and a reference or two to churches :).

One of the things I love most about this whole collection is the inclusion and influence of a heroine with a different cultural background in each tale (the men of the British Alnwick family unite the stories). Beatrice is an American heiress, Elena an English citizen but her upbringing on the Continent has make her a product of a Bohemian lifestyle, and Brigitta a science-y Viennese psychoanalyst. I especially love the way each story weaves hope and romance together in a voice unique to each author. As a huge fan of J’nell and Rachel already, reading The Castle Keepers is a treat — and I now have a particularly soft spot for Sigmund the cat.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the review copy. This is my honest review.

The Castle Keepers

Three beautiful novellas from three authors whose books I have come to love. Story one is set in 1870 at a time after the American Civil War and at the time of the gilded Age. Charles returns home to England from war in India and faces a hostile village. Story two is set in 1917 as the Great War is still raging. Tobias's story is heartbreaking and brave when he returns from the conflict facially damaged to confront an unforgiving world. Story three is set in 1945 when Alec returns from WWII emotionally broken and suffering from what we now know as PTSD. Beside all three men are the women who love them.
Behind them all is the Castle that holds and sustains them. I love all three stories and thank you to three wonderful authors. I highly recommend this book to other readers.

"The Castle Keepers" is an amazing collaboration of three authors, Aimie K. Runyan, J’nell Ciessielski, and Rachel McMillan describing three time periods 1870, 1917, and 1945 at Leedswick Castle, in England, where the Ainwick family resided.

I am a fan of Aimie K. Runyan's novels, and I loved her novella taking place in 1870. Both J'nell Ciessielski and Rachel Mcmillan are new authors for me to read, and I also enjoyed their novellas. Besides the family name, the common thread is the curse of war and the belief that the castle is cursed because of the family. Three different women from three timelines have to show their bravery and courage.

The genres for this book are Historical Fiction, Women's Fiction, and Romance. The location for this story is mostly in England, at Leedswick Castle. Do you believe that a castle can be cursed? The authors, in their own way, vividly describe their colorful and dramatic characters as complex and complicated. Some are brave and courageous. Some are greedy and ruthless. There is loyalty, betrayal, danger, and death. All wars are tragic and devasting and cause the devastation of the people and their properties.

I love that there are three different storylines and timetables in this novel. I highly recommend this intriguing, memorable, and thought-provoking book to others.

so here we follow three stories, three timelines, written by three authors. (witch by the way is pretty cool)!
and everything's happening in this seemingly cursed castle, basically a poison garden named leedswick.
the timelines are as follows:
1870: Beatrice is an American Dollar Princess ,married to Charles, a British Marquess whit actually the worst family ever! this is a struggle for them to despite everything have a loving relationship, specially when they're surrounded by hatred.

1917: Tobias's face suffers horrible scars, curtesy of WWI. Elena, a talented artist, is hired to paint him a mask. and every bit of their story happens inside those cursed castle walls.

1945: Alec a WWII survivor is so mentally damaged that he seeks help from a famous Austrian psychoanalyst and his niece, Brigitta. He opens a convalescent center in the castle, and hires Brigitta as a therapist. now could she help them-most importantly Alec- find peace and could she herself find the happy ending for the love she's feeling in her chest?

a very fast read for me, amazing stories, amazing characters. and it came to me just in the right time. enjoyed it so so so much.

3 predictable Hallmark stars

“Burgess sipped from his cup and made a face. ‘A bit stale.’”

Three historical romance novellas set in an English castle. The first one, (1870s) reminded me of Downton Abbey – with formal stilted dialog and everything centering around status, with each character playing a prescribed role. The romance is prim and proper, without even conjugating the marriage – because of love and protection. Ridiculous. Come on.

The second novella takes place during World War I. The vivid colors in this one with the red-haired painter made it the strongest of the three romances. “Perhaps it was the rain against the medieval stone, or the way the firelight danced in her hair, or the fierce pull to protect those who could not protect themselves, but he wanted nothing more than to slay dragons for her.” Over the top. Not my cup of tea.

The third section did not hold my interest. It might appeal to readers who cherish unsurprising romantic historical fiction more than I do.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This fictional story follows 3 generations of the Alnwick family, the keepers of (the real) Alnwick Castle in Northumberland. Each generation face unique trials that ultimately lead them to find love.

In 1870, there is Charles Alnwick whose leg was injured in the War, and his 'Dollar Princess' Beatrice Holbrook. In 1917, we meet their grandson Tobias Alnwick whose face was injured in WWI, and the artist who paints his hand crafted mask, Elena. Then finally in 1945, we meet their son Alec Alnwick who returns from WWII with psychological scars, and is assisted by training Psychoanalyst Brigitta.

I really enjoyed each section of this story and would happily have read each as its own full length book. The fact that Alnwick Castle was the main setting, such an iconic place with the notorious Poison garden, made the characters seem real.

Thank you to all three Author's, @Netgalley & @harpermusebooks for providing such rich, intertwined stories that took me through the human repurcussions of three wars too! I've willingly provided this review and all opinions are my own.

Altogether they have three stories in this beautiful delicious historical romance book my favorite was Helena and Tobias but as soon as I say that I think of their son story which I also love the story with the American actress it goes from one couple to their sons romance three generations and every story has a touch of war and drama and romance in every story is so worth reading on its own much less altogether I loved this book and listen to it as an audio and thought the narrator did such a great job not only with the different accents but setting a great tone for the book. It was such a good book a total five star read and if you love historical romance there’s three different eras, three different romances and one great book. This is a fabulous read and one I highly recommend. I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher Harper Muse but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

"The Castle Keepers" by Aime K. Runyan, J'nell Ciesielski, Rachel McMillan, Narrated by Ann Marie Gideon. It was an emotion ride that is filled with love, sorrow and humor. I couldn't stop listening to the book and I finished this in 1 day and I repeated it 3 times, because it was so well narrated and the narrator really depts their emotions into the story and I was overwhelmed with emotion. Definitely worth the time to listen. Grab a tissue, you will need it.

Thank you!

I just reviewed The Castle Keepers by Aimie K. Runyan, J'nell Ciesielski, Rachel McMillan. #TheCastleKeepers #NetGalley

The Castle Keepers is three novellas about the Alnwick family that lives in Leeswick Castle in Northumberton, England. Three different generations of women, Beatrice, Elena, Brigitte who made an impact on the lives of the Alnwick family.
I loved the settings, interesting characters and the poison garden that was in all three novellas.

I received a free e-arc of this book through Netgalley.
This is 3 books written by different authors centered around a family castle in England. Each story covers a different time period at the estate and relates to the same family and how they deal with their family's heritage. I enjoyed the different looks at the same property and the historical aspects are quite interesting. This is romance-heavy.

I really like all 3 of these authors, when I heard they wrote a book together I knew I had to read it and it did not disappoint. I liked how it was 3 stories linked through a family and a castle. Each of the stories were good on their own, I hope there is another joint book to come from these authors.

DNF - I didn’t realize this was 3 short stories. All 3 are men traumatized by war. They meet women who are to help them help them deal with their scars. Then they fall in love and live happily ever after. So yes, very cliche. 1.75 audio.

Leedswick Castle in Northumberland has been in the Alnwick family for hundreds of years with a curse that seems to follow each generation. This trio of novellas follows the fate of those who keep the castle at Leedswick.

1870: Miss Beatrice Holbrook, a “dollar princess” heads to England to find a titled husband after an ill-fated dinner at the Astor’s shuts New York society’s doors. In London, Beatrice meets the very eligible Charles Alnwick, whom most considered an impossible catch, and attempts to become the next Marchioness of Northridge.

1917: Elena Hamilton is a talented bohemian artist, who wants nothing but to aide the men disfigured by the Great War. When Tobias Alnwick’s parents commission her to paint a mask created for him, she jumps at the chance to help Tobias find the confidence to “face” the world again. Elena finds a man whose battle wounds go far deeper than the surface, and she does what she can to remind him of what he was fighting for—to see the good again.

1945: Brigitta Mayr is working on her doctorate in psychoanalysis in Vienna when she is asked to join a group of men recently home from battle suffering with their reentrance to society. Alec Alnwick believes his estate could be used to help veterans who are suffering from what we now know as PTSD. Brigitta and Alec are determined to change the Alnwick family legacy of suffering, and end a curse forever.

Each generation of Alnwick men in these novellas has seen war that has greatly affected them, and each finds a bride that brings helps them find peace afterwards. The mysterious and in some areas deadly castle gardens are a prominent feature in each tale. All three storylines were interesting and a bit predictable, though the third seems much more focused on Alec than Brigitta breaking the format of the female character feeling like the lead.

Thank you to NetGalley, Harper Muse, and of course the authors: Aimee K. Runyan, J’nell Ciesielski, and Rachel McMillan for the advanced copy of the audiobook. The Castle Keepers is out now. All opinions are my own.
