Leader of the popular women's ministry She Speaks Fire, Mariela Rosario shares her story of abandonment and drug use to emphasize her powerful message of overcoming shame so that readers can embrace their purpose and live boldly in the love of Jesus. In She Speaks Fire , spoken word poet Mariela Rosario vulnerably shares her testimony of being abandoned as a child, which led to intense people pleasing and subsequent drug use. Then, alone in her house in 2015, she experienced a miraculous encounter with God that prompted her to turn away from those damaging patterns and begin attending church. As her relationship with Jesus deepened, she launched a full-time ministry, She Speaks Fire, which helps other women face their past failures and overcome feelings of shame so that they, too, can live fully and unapologetically for God and walk in their God-given purpose. Unpacking the biblical story of the garden of Eden in Genesis, Rosario reveals the seven areas where shame did not exist in the garden, which are the exact areas where believers are spiritually attacked By identifying the origins of their own shame--and the ways shame blocks them from living an authentic life--readers will then be able to embrace the four steps to overcoming unhealthy shame patterns. When they begin to own their story, they will be able to give God glory and encourage others who are seeking freedom in him. Then they can embrace being bold for Christ and spread his love far and wide.

I had not heard of this author before reading this book. She founded She Speaks Fire in 2018 and talks about it in the book. I enjoyed the book for its vulnerable storytelling and practical help. It would be a good book for someone who has carried hurt, shame, and struggles for a long time, and is now looking for faith-based guidance.
My favorite quotes from the book include these: "Right now, God's purpose is calling you to remind you that He didn't change His number and He didn't change yours either. Stop ghosting Him, stop leaving His texts unread, and stop sending His calls to voicemail." "I had a choice. I could pick up the same ol' raggedy phone call that I've answered my whole life with shame's name scrawled across the caller ID, or I could pick up God's call to join him at work. One was filled with a familiar lie, and one was filled with a new rhetoric of purpose. I chose to answer the latter." "Every one of us needs to have a community that supports one another individually and collectively so we see and experience the healthiness that comes from authentic relationship." "Let His approval wash over the countless disapproval you've lived with for far too long." "We don't mean to venture off too far in one direction, but without a boundary line we can't truly see how far out of the lines we've gone."
This book would also be good for someone struggling with body image issues, rejection from peers or boyfriends, and abandonment issues as a child of divorce.
A final quote - "The freer you get, the more you help others find their voices, their identities, and their freedom too."
So many thoughts were springing up in my mind as I read this book and meditated on its words. I kept picturing shame-burdened folks slowly walking through an orchard of fig trees. They were choosing which fig leaves to cover their shame with.
That can be a sobering visual. And yet, this book is filled with so much hope! While reading this book, you will be encouraged to discard the fig leaves of shame and exchange them for freedom…real and lasting freedom.
My favorite chapter is the one on boundaries and the power of saying no. In addition to heartfelt anecdotes, much wisdom fills that chapter and I took many notes.
Reading this book will help you to fight shame, deepen your faith and to claim your God given purpose.
I encourage you to read this well written book and then share it with someone else.

I am reviewing She Speaks Fire through Nelson Books and Netgalley:
Having been deeply wounded as a child, Mariela Rosario grew up with pain that seemed insurmountable. A toxic pattern of drug use, people-pleasing, and shame emerged in her life. After an encounter with God alone in her house in 2015, Mariela turned away from destructive patterns and began attending church. With a deepening relationship with Jesus, she launched a ministry to help other women overcome their past hurts and walk in freedom and joy. The purpose God has given a woman is activated when she speaks fire.
Mariela uses the biblical story of Eden to explore eight lessons about shame that will nourish us and lead us to live authentically, powerfully, and freely. As Mariela shows us how we can return to sweet communion with God and ourselves and live in community with others, she helps us seeMariela demonstrates how we can return to sweet communion with God and ourselves and live in community with others as she shows us how to return to sweet communion with God and ourselves why the seed of shame might be holding us back from God’s call, God's call might be hindered by the seed of shame, what it looks like to let go of the need for others’ approval, What it looks like to let go of the need for approval from others, who our real enemy is and why he will never win, and Why our real enemy will never win, and what we can do to stop him how to bravely own our stories so we can help others find freedom too.
By owning our stories bravely, we can help others find freedom as well.We can help others find freedom by owning our stories bravely.
It can be difficult to know what to do when there is an overwhelming sense of shame. As you take your first bold step toward living an authentic and loving life on fire for God, this book will encourage and validate you.
I had never encountered the author or her ministry before picking up this book. I feel like I have been missing out. This was an incredible book! The personal stories and the Scripture were paired together so well. I have never had an experience where I kept saying I thought I was the only one who thought that and then seeing God's response with Scripture was magic for me. Highly highly recommend!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I found this book by accident on my instagram. However it has been so life changing. I related the author in so many ways as she walked me through her life and how she processed and healed from trauma and shame.
I can’t recommend this book enough. All I can say is every chapter had me on my face before God seeing things with a new perspective. Perfect for teens and adults alike 💕
This book changed my life. I never thought about shames impact the way she broke it down and it has helped unlock so much I’ve bottled up for a long time.
