Longform presents stories that subvert conventional narrative; stories about ordinary people; autobiographies; travel tales - and through these stories establish comics as a permanent feature on a reader's shelf. The anthology takes us through the streets of Rome and Kolkata, modern-day Tehran and ancient Bhutan, around-the-corner dystopias, imaginary cities and kaleidoscopic dreamscapes. ________________________________________________________________________
The entire collection reinstates the feeling that the whole is larger than the sum of its components. Volume 2 continues the graphical narrative experiments. The consistency is almost similar to V1.
What I loved: 1. The longer meaty narratives - Murder (reminiscent of The Birds by Hitchcock), The Tail (with a great ending message), Oye Tubu (for the simple and nostalgic frames, cute grandma), Bose vs Bose (complex and profound), Pushkar, Holly Hill. 2. Stand out art was from this story called Kallan (Thief in Malayalam) - the cover of book comes from here. The tea part compelled me to leave the book aside and go for a tea break! 3. Collaborating and including works of non Indian artists for this volume. 4. Top notch publishing quality. Such thick pages!
What i didn't like: 1. Just like V1, there were a few abstract stories which did not make any sense at all. Or i was unable to grasp the deeper meaning (if any!) 2. Why the shape and size of V2 is different from V1? Different publishers too - from Harper Collins to Penguin.
Overall: Hooked to it. Will continue seeking further volumes!
Why don't you just take a meat cleaver and slice my head open/10
Longform Volume 1 was amazing. Where Longform felt like an introduction to the concept and the people behind it. Longform 2 felt different. For one, it was clear than volume 1, the stories in volume 2 just make things feel so heavy. While book 1 had a lot of stories I could gravitate towards, I lost traction towards the second half but honestly, the visuals were enough to keep me engaged. I wanted volume 3 now...the idea of a graphic novel anthology is fascinating to me. And I want to see what else can come from it.
Final Thought: This book has everything: crows, boobs, glue sniffers, drug benders, medical anomalies, sexual trauma stemming from bad relationships, the lgbtqia community...what more could you ask for?
