I have been a fan of Erica Laurie since I read Eun Na and the Phantom which was a paranormal romance based on Korean folklore. I had started getting big into K-dramas and I was like ooh an historical K-drama in book form.

The Fox and the Phoenix is a paranormal shape shifter romantic suspense based on the Chinese (also other asian cultures) folklore of the 9 tailed fox. If you watched the movie Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings you probably saw a 9 tailed fox when Shang Chi visited his mom's mythical home village Ta Lo. The 9 tailed foxes are shape shifters who when they appear in human form are seductively irresistible in physical appearance to humans (if that isn't enough they have magical charming powers to lure you in). According to Dong the 9 tailed fox hero of this romance they are known to kill their spouses on their wedding night by consuming their spirit. So Dong thinks he is a death warrant for any mortal woman he is in an romantic relationship with so he keeps pushing the heroine Riley away.

I said this was a romantic suspense, because plot twist after plot twist is dropped layer by layer on the reader leaving you with so many questions that have you turning the pages to find the answers to them. Riley has a lot of other much more deadly paranormal forces to worry about than Dong and the action really heats up the last third of the book.

Language: No profanity that I remember.

Sensuality content: Kissing only. No sex on page or off. There are a couple times the heroine sleeps in a bed with the hero there, but he stays above the covers while she is underneath them. An antagonist mentions Riley must be pregnant to choose Dong when she isn't obviously, because of the aforementioned facts.

Love it

I read this book in kindle vella with coins and I spent all my free coins for this book. And I was praying so hard that my coins will take me to the end of this book. I really liked this story. The setting, the magic, the characters everything. I really liked the ancient feelings the characters have. And I will read other books of this author.

A True Love Story

I was thoroughly enchanted by this story, and found it quite difficult to stop reading. The words flowed, and it was very easy to picture the characters and events in my mind as I read.

I absolutely LOVED this story. Many stories that you have heard of "Love Conquers All" is such a true storyline that is seen in many movies and books. This book is of no exception to that truth as well. I did see a resemblance of a Romeo and Juliet storyline to the MMCs past love life which is neat to visualize. OF COURSE there just had to be a wonderful imugi dragon to help thr FMC & MMC in the storyline 😀. There are some troupes that you will see such as friends to lovers, found family, and new beginings.

Some lines I just loved in this story were:
-Dong (the MMC), " I just dont understand how you put up with me". "Me either" Riley (the FMC) " must be love"

-Dong " you're my unstoppable sunshine"

-Dong "I am starting to believe. You are an angel".

Oh my heart....in the end it all worked out but every bit of the story was well worth reading. 🥰🥰🥰

I'm starting this off by stating how in love I am with Dong! "I love you, too. I've loved you from the moment I met you. I want to marry you and only you. I wish to be with you now and always. Darn it all, I can't-" LIKE UGHHHH 🥰🥰🥰🥰 I love the whole concept of him being closed off to love because he's been hurt and Riley stopping at nothing to get to her man! Like yes girl chase him!! I am a huge sap for a red string theory because I feel like we don't get enough of that and now add mythical creatures and you have me falling in love. I have only read two Erica Laurie books but she is slowly becoming a favorite author of mine!.

This was a charming fairytale, and gorgeously written. It transported me into its world from the beginning. It was sweet, romantic, and magical. Everything about it seemed to spark joy for me, so I will be reading something else by this author.

Thank you to Booksprout and the author for a free copy to review.

I'm a huge fan of Erica Laurie and this book was no exception. With this paranormal romance based on Korean folklore I had such a good time. And like I said in another review her stories would be excellent material to a historical K-drama.

If you are in to romantic mythological stories full of suspense this book is for you.

I really, really wanted to love this book. I mean, a fox and a phoenix falling in love with one another? Inspired by Japanese folklore? Yes, please! Sadly, the writing needed a lot of work. It was very telling which made it hard to get invested with the characters, worldbuilding, and plot. Not to mention, but it also head-hopped which is a huge pet peeve of mine.

Meh…

Story felt like it was rushed and lacked any deep character development. Basic cute short story but would not recommend

This book reminded me of Forthright's Amaranthine Saga. I imagine they started with the same source materials as inspiration. There's a shape-shifting, multi-tailed fox as the main character, and that fox can be dangerous and is archaic in his relationship to the modern world. It's a romance, too. It was fine, but didn't hold my interest.
