Kincaid Pack #6

The Witch and His Doctor

Rate this book
In this series finale, the Kincaid Pack is forced to put everything on the line… or lose everything they hold dear.

Damien has a secret.

Actually, he has more than one. His entire life within the Kincaid Pack has been a lie. Now that the truth is starting to come out, he’s faced with accepting the consequences he set into motion years ago.

And hoping his mate will forgive him.

Except the reckless actions of his past may prove to not only be his own undoing… but that of the pack he’s come to love.

Carter gave up on finding his fated mate years ago.

He has a medical practice to keep him busy, a pack he’d do anything for, and a family that’s always been a little too nosy for his peace of mind.

Learning the witch he’s grown to admire and have feelings for has betrayed them all? Just proves he’s getting too old for the whole falling-in-love thing. It doesn’t matter that the moment he catches Damien’s unaltered scent he realizes another devastating secret the man has been hiding.

The only thing that matters is saving the pack—and its alpha.

With Rick’s life hanging in the balance and the pack’s enemies moving to strike against them while they’re at their most vulnerable, it will take every scrap of magic and bravery Damien possesses to prove once and for all where his loyalty lies.

The Witch and His Doctor is the sixth and final book in the bestselling Kincaid Pack series, best read in order. It features an age gap, fated mates, a size difference, hurt/comfort, and a guaranteed happily ever after.

Near death experiences, traitors, Tom Riddle’s diary with Umbridge style retaliations, age-gap romance between a bear and his mate who smells and somehow tastes like honey🙄 magic sex is an answer to a problem….

Honestly? I enjoyed reading this series so much and I loved everyone in the Kincaid pack, will definitely reread someday. I can’t choose a favorite character nor couple, but book five’s story was my favorite. Here, it was more emotional and complicated but it needed more…everything! it was the final battle so it wasn’t focused solely on their story like I wanted it to but there was a lot of heart in it still.

there’s no feeling out there quite like seeing a series you love through to the end.

i’ve been sitting with my feelings over the past few days and letting the bittersweet (and spicy ehm) waves of emotion wash over me.

most of you have probably noticed that this series is never out of my monthly wrap ups purely because i can’t seem to go long without rereading it.

not only have i been waiting YEARS for Damien and Carter to get their happily ever afters, but i’ve been very curious about the future of the pack.

Damien broke my heart a thousand times over in this book and i’m so glad Doc was there to hold the pieces together. and because Kiki will do as Kiki does. some understated kink in there for you to look forward to.

there’s very little i enjoy more than a spin-off and a connected universe of books. i was glad to check in with lots of pack members in the Kincaid Pack finale, but it’s so nice to already have something to look forward to.

“The Witch and His Doctor” will be here in just a few hours. Thank you so much to Kiki for letting me read this one a bit earlier 💙

What a wonderful grand finale for this series!!! Kiki Clark has done a great job with this last book of the Kincaid Pack Series and I've enjoyed it so much.
Damien and Carter are the MCs of this book and I was so looking forward to reading their story. There is an age gap and a size difference between them which only translates into them being perfect for each other. Damien had been suffering for years, he's a sweet guy with a big heart who didn't have to do what he was commanded to. The beginning of the book is a bit angsty, but luckily the author doesn't drag it on for too long and everything clears up soon. That doesn't mean things get resolved quickly but at least all pack members come to understand why Damien has done what he did.
Carter is a cinnamon roll of a man and once he discovers Damien is his fated mate, nothing can't stop him from making sure he's protected and cared for. I loved Carter's family, they were just what Damien needed. It was so beautiful to witness Damien realising that he now had a family.
I loved that other MCs from previous books got to have a few chapters from their POVs, because they were important in the development of the plot. And Rick and Kai... omg, they were just wonderful, but they didn't steal the attention from Carter and Damien.
The end was great with the battle and fighting, witches and shifters protecting the pack and everything being wrapped up perfectly. It was better than I expected, and my expectations were quite high. I absolutely loved this book as it has a sweet romance, lovely MCs and a pack to die for. Actually the whole series has been amazing, but this last book was the perfect conclusion to this saga.

Audiobook Review

If you had asked me after reading book one if I would believe it would end this way, I would've said heck no. But I would have been wrong.

So in this one we have Damien and Carter's HEA. I really wish it had been more about this couple and less about what I'm guessing will be a spin off series and the other people. To be honest, this had way too much going on and could have been less and still be a good story.

But I hated the way Damien was treated and really wished he left to find his happiness elsewhere. I may be the odd duck but I really didn't like Carter much and I really disliked Rick in here.

But the action was done well and the narration was awesome. Kurt Graves did a great job.

I love both Carter and Damien, and their pairing really worked for me.

Damien is a blushing virgin, and Doc is more than ready to corrupt him.

What happened to Damien and his dad was just so sad.

This is an intense series finale, with twists and turns, loss and triumph, but I was disappointed that after six books, some important plot points were still left unresolved.

I can't believe this series has come to an end, but THE WITCH AND HIS DOCTOR was a great finale! The battle between the Kincaid Pack and the Council has been brewing from book 1 and I was so curious to see how things would shake out. This was such an intense read and it encompassed so much more than just Carter and Damien's relationship, though that was still at the forefront. Clark certainly didn't pull any punches when writing this one and it's probably the most emotional of all the books in the series. There were a few smaller threads left hanging by the end so I'm really looking forward to seeing what the spin-off series has to offer.

As for the romance, I loved Damien and Carter together; their relationship was so gentle and sweet and the way Carter cared for Damien was beautiful. I adored how romantic Carter was and the way he never shied away from showing Damien how important he was. There was so much heartbreak to Damien's story and the way he spends the beginning of the book thinking he doesn't deserve Carter as a mate was heartbreaking.

Damien was forced into being a spy for the O'Hare coven and while he tried as hard as possible not to betray the pack he was falling in love with he couldn't stop everything. His full story was so sad and while certain members of the pack took longer to trust him (understandably) I was so glad to see that Carter and Tashmica were on Damien's side from the beginning. He desperately needed that loyalty and support.

I also enjoyed seeing more of Kai and Rick's relationship since they remain my favorite couple from the series. They had some hard moments but I actually appreciated seeing that the work of a good relationship doesn't stop after the happily ever after. Rick and Kai might be fated mates but they're still people, and people are flawed and they make mistakes, especially when trying to protect loved ones. Reading THE WITCH AND HIS DOCTOR was bittersweet, knowing it was the end, but I'll be re-reading this series for years to come and I can't wait to read more in this world Clark has created.

I very much enjoyed the ending to the Kincaid series . I wish it had focused more on just Carter and Damien but it made sense why it didn't, I'm just greedy lol I loved getting to meet Carter's brothers , I really hope they show up in the spin off series !

It is so rare that a series finale lives up to your expectations. I actually get pre-finale anxiety before one of my favorites/comfort series comes to a close. Thankfully, I was lucky enough to get an ARC for the final book of The Kincaid Pack series by Kiki Clark, which is absolutely one of my favorites, and is a comfort series! This was also one of my most anticipated releases of the year after the evil cliffhanger in book 5. But it not only did not disappoint; it was an amazing 5 stars!

The Basics
*Paranormal Romance – Shifter M (Carter) + Witch M (Damien)
*Fated Mates – Age Gap
*Dual POV (this book also has a few POV chapters from previous MCs)
*Sixth and final book of The Kincaid Pack Series; books are interconnected and should be read in order as there is an overarching storyline; every book focuses on one couple and their HEA.
*First book in the series The Alpha and His King
*On page, in detail, descriptive intimate scenes

I adored Damien and Carter. The angst at the beginning was fitting for the circumstances and feelings of betrayal/danger. But the sweetness and wooing that followed is one of my favorite types of romances. It was precious how Carter refused to allow the brewing conflict prevent him from properly courting his mate. I also loved getting a few extra POVs from some of our previous MCs! It was great to check in, but it didn’t remove the focus from our main couple and their story. It was just the right amount of ‘others.’ Plus, it was always for plot purposes, and never felt like fan service.

I’ve loved the individual books in this series for their love stories, but I also love the series for its focus on pack politics/society and its series wide conflict. The resolution was worth the wait! I don’t want to spoil anything, but I appreciated how certain things happened on page, but not everything needed to be shown (I’m not reading a war history!). And I liked how certain characters met specific justice!

I absolutely loved the book. A great end to one of my favorite series! If you haven’t read them, and like shifters, magic, or mm, I absolutely recommend them!!

The first thing is don't read this book having started finished the last couple chapters of the previous one. You just get thrown into the deep end with no idea of what happened before.

I had been so excited for this book I wanted to hangout with Damian and Carter as they found love. Unfortunately they continued to be more side characters in their own book.

We have Rick and Kai have a fight and we spend time in their POVs and Gabriel’s and I don’t know if I’m forgetting someone not Carter or Damian

This book finished the series and set up the next one. I may reread the series and maybe this one will be more enjoyable then. I don’t know if I’ll pick up the next series it’s going to depend on what the reviews say

The good
+ Damien's heart for his pack
+ Carter taking care of Damien
+ Carter's flair for the romantic. Despite their circumstances, he took Damien on a romantic date and even made sure their mating was a special occasion
    + Damien
    + Rick
+ The tension and the fast pace
+ Damien sitting in Carter's lap all the time
+ Tash. She was an amazing friend to Damien and deserved more credit

The neutral
o I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. My review remains honest and unbiased
o This book contained several chapters from POVs from characters other than Carter and Damien
o Many plotlines are left unresolved. I assume the story will continue in a spin-off / sequel series
o Carter already got his 'power boost' before officially mating with Damien, while Damien didn't get his until after their mating. That was a bit confusing
o Damien didn't have an opportunity to use his boosted power

The bad
    - Carter said he was in love with Damien and had wanted to ask him on a date before everything went down. But after he found out Damien was his mate, it felt like they started from scratch, like all his feelings had just suddenly dissolved
    - The whole pack had turned against Damien, and most didn't relent even after it became clear that Damien had not acted of his own free will, because they couldn't forgive his betrayal. Yet their own Alpha had just betrayed the pack as well, and nobody (except ) even considered the possibility of not forgiving him
    - Rick demanded loyalty from his pack members, but loyalty goes two ways. The way he treated Damien and Carter did not speak of loyalty. Kieran was the son of an enemy too, but he was readily accepted into the pack. Robson was a human, and he was readily accepted as well. Gabriel was a literal enemy, and yep, accepted into the pack. Damien was the son of an enemy and forced to do things against his will, and he was mistreated. Tortured, even. And Carter's loyalty to the pack was rewarded with dismissal when he tried to speak up for Damien
    - That beta who hurt Damien was demoted for his rough treatment of Damien, while Bennett wasn't even reprimanded for forcing the cuffs on Damien again and again. Those cuffs damaged Damien far more, literally burning his skin, and Bennett's apology was basically . That's not an apology, it's an excuse
    - There was only one scene with Carter in his bear form, and a really short one with Kai in his wolf form. Disappointingly little for a shifter book. Where were the bear cuddles?

I was at the edge of my seat the whole time while reading this. It was fast-paced and very exciting. Even though I think Damien was treated unfairly and I don't think every possibility was used to its full potential (shifted forms, mating power boosts), it was an enjoyable read. I wonder whether the next series will take place in this pack or a different one.

3.4 stars.

While I've enjoyed this series a lot, the world-changing plotline part of the story hasn't made a lot of sense... and this book did not bring things together in any way that made sense. There was so much sloppy plotting and the pacing was way off.

The romance wasn't great. Most of them falling in love was in the past and I didn't really feel like the romance was great in this. Below is a SPOILER-filled list of things that made no sense or I just didn't enjoy.
.

.
.
1. Carter calls Damien "baby boy". It's weird. This whole series has had several bizarre age gap romances... but the "baby boy" thing made my eyes roll.
2. Damien has a blood oath tattoo. They are able to remove every part of it except the part that allows his mom to kill him at any time from any location. But, when he faces his mom, she throws lightening bolts at him rather than invoking the oath. Why? I don't know. Even when he's killing her, she doesn't invoke the tattoo.
3. They know that the enemy could come at any time and Carter and Damien have been warned to expect an alert. Carter chooses that time to take Damien on a date in the middle of nowhere. They even have mimosas. What? Who drinks mimosas right before they expect enemies to invade them?
4. Rick acts like an idiot and almost gets himself killed. It's like he's stupid and doesn't understand how the world works.
5. Damien is able to show folks his blood oath tattoo even though he can't talk about it at all. However, he's been trapped there for 2 years and never thought to do that until now!? Why?
6. All of the evil seems orchestrated by Damien's and Jessica's mom. Why? She wanted to kill Jessica? She raised her. She could have killed her at any time.
7. Constant horniness. I get it, I get it. This is a romance; however, it's really weird to have folks getting all horny when their partner is imprisoned. It didn't matter what was going on in the story; Carter was CONSTANTLY aroused because of his mate. It was so over the top.

This book left so much unanswered. I loved the romances in this series a lot but the overarching storyline made no sense and there are so many loose ends.

After reading the ebook, I was looking forward to the audiobook

And this was really great! I adored Carter's and Damiens' voice
And absolutely loved the story this time around

Kirt Graves was not really on my radar regarding narrations till now, but I absolutely adored the way he told this story

So glad I got to listen to this audiobook

First review
I was really looking forward to this last book in this series, and Kiki Clark did not disappoint.

In my op, the part dealing with Damiens betrayal was perfectly done. I could totally understand why everyone had troubles just forgiving him, although I wanted them to.

The relationship between Carter and Damien is more ir less a given and I was a bit disappointed that we didn't get to see more of the development pre-mating "frenzy"

What disappointed me was the l conclusion of the story arc. The big showdown was more of a ... "and by the way".

But I appreciated that we got to see more of Rick and Kai

All in all, a well done last book in this series, which I really enjoyed.

This is the 6th and final book of Kiki Clark’s Kincaid Pack series. While each book covers a couple’s/poly’s romantic arc – there’s an ongoing mystery/suspense that weaves through the books starting in The Alpha and His King. As such, this review may contain spoilers to earlier books.

There's always some trepidation when I've loved all the books in a series as much as I have these as to whether the series ending can live up to my expectations. Fortunately, Clark did a great job with this finale.

I've been looking forward to Doc & Damien since I've loved both their characters and age gap romance. Given how much was going on in this book I felt the main couple got a nice relationship development. The end of The Enforcer and His Heart had huge revelations in terms of Damien being Jess's brother and that he's been spying on the pack this whole time. Damien's acceptance of the shunning by everyone except Tashmicah had me bawling for the majority of the first half of the book. Once the Pack learns the reasons they slowly open up to him. Doc's struggle felt realistic and not overly dragged out. (Doc's term of endearment for Damien of "Baby Boy" wasn't my fav, but I know that's just a personal preference). He became a staunch advocate and protector of Damien. Swoon.

Things with the council are coming to a head and all the interactions and secrets that are revealed offers a lot of tension and suspense. While I would have liked the part that took place in Mehko to have been told in real time instead of an "after" in the last chapter - I did enjoy the "big event" between... ok, no spoilers.

The epilogue offered a nice wrap up for not only Doc & Damien, but many other members of the Pack as well. I loved the way Clark concluded not only the story but the whole series.

She definitely has a spin-off series planned and I'm looking forward to those books.

Narration:
Kirt Graves was absolutely amazing in this series start to finish. But this one is emotional and I was literally ugly crying through much of it because his performance was so evocative. All these characters that I've spent years following, loving, adoring - he really was each one of them. I don't have the words to express how fiercely I love the narration.

I have very complicated feelings about this series. The writing style is pretty addictive and I flew through it, but the stories were sloppy and Rick (who’s supposed to be this amazing Alpha) is honestly just an asshole. He was barely redeemable in his own book and from the POV of others annoyed me more and more.

This story had all the makings of a shifter romance that I haaaate:

- inappropriate age gap ✅
- virginal younger MC ✅
- older MC calls younger MC “baby boy” ✅🤮
- final book in a series so has other characters’ POV✅
- MCs feel like side characters in their own book ✅

I still read it cuz there are characters I do care about in the series and I was curious how it ended, but I most certainly skimmed the sex scenes (seriously what is up with the big age gaps? Why is this such a thing with shifter books?!) and got bored a few times.

I think the author had great ideas with the plot but had trouble making it come together. Some things made no sense to me, most things were resolved way too easily, some plot lines were unfinished, and Rick still sucks (justice for Kai!!!!!)

I hope to someday to find a MM series that is close to the quality level of Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series.

I received an ARC Copy of this book, this review is from my own thought 😍

I really enjoyed that book, first because it’s kind of the premiere conclusion of this massive plot but also because it’s a journey toward trust and second chance.
Damian has been forced to spy on the pack for two years, now that he has been discovered he’s ready to fight in order to earn their trust back but most of all to make his mate proud. With nothing blocking his senses anymore, Carter knew immediately that Damian was his mate, shock and frilled by this revelation, the doctor will do everything to ensure his mate’s safety.
The pack is in a precarious position, they will need cohesion and they’re alpha more than ever!!

I had a wonderful time with these books, and I don’t want this universe to come to an end, new characters have been introduced and I’m convinced that many things can still happen, I would love to meet the famous mobster and I want more of these delicious new characters. I don’t when, but for sure I will read all the series over again !!

An end to an AMAZING SERIES. I love this series as a whole, it was my first time reading a shifter book and this did not disappoint. It was so great and I love this community/pack.

This particular book was not my favorite favorite but I enjoyed it and the couple. I felt the build-up was so much, and the ending was slightly lackluster. It was over with quickness and I felt the timeline was unrealistic while I was happy it worked out I could not believe it was over because it was so quickly.

The couple was adorable and Carter was an amazing partner but it felt weird in a way to have this couple be the last just because I felt Carter's importance or presence in the series was very minimal but Damiens was very important. It felt unbalanced.

Another thing that frustrates me is that Jess and Samantha (maybe Vanessa if I remember correctly) were placed throughout the book/series and then we leave without knowing them, which is frustrating. I think they almost deserve their book but we won't get one so I am not sure what the point of having them build up so much and leave on a cliffhanger was annoying. Why bother, you know?

Overall, I am so happy with this series and I cannot wait for the spinoff pack series!

I was fighting for my life trying to get through this book. So much was happening simultaneously. I get that Clark had to wrap up all loose ends and have the big battle or whatever, but we got a lot more side character narration than the MCs, which was a little stressful at times. I came for Damian and Carter, give me their story 😫. Good ending to the series, though.

It's been months since I read the last books. So I won't lie, I was a bit disoriented in the beginning, as it starts where the last book ended. But it was really good. Really really good. I really should keep an eye on Kiki in the future, there's a lot of potential for good books here

Series: Kincaid Pack #6
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

After the previous book left us with the cliffhanger of Rick being injured I have been eagerly waiting for this book and it was a great ending. This book picks up right where the previous one ended and we get to see what happens to Rick, and in turn, the Kincaid Pack.

This book kept me hooked from the very beginning. While this does mainly focus on Carter and Damian, we also get a lot of Rick and Kai since Rick’s actions caused a lot of damage. I adored Carter and Damian so much! Carter may be a protective bear but I loved how sweet he was with Damian. The O’Hares may be coming to attack but Carter goes out of his way to woo Damian and take him on a date, which is adorable. I loved him so much.

"I love you more than life itself, mate. I’d kill or die for you without thought or question. I may be the alpha, but you are my home. My everything. My reason for being."

Damian's story, once he can tell it, was heartbreaking. I liked how smart and inventive Damian was. He may have been bound to the O’Hares but he made contingencies to try and save himself and others. Damian was such a strong young man who really had his heart put through the wringer in this one but also found a lot of happiness at the same time. One good thing about Clark’s books is that while shit may be happening, I can at least count on a HEA and no main characters dying.

The war against the O’Hares and the Council finally comes to head and while tense, I was glad it wasn’t drawn out. Also I appreciated that Damian and Rick dealing with their parents wasn’t drawn out either and while they were terrible people, it still affected them. Overall, this was just a very fast paced battle that changed this whole world. I am very eager to see future series set in this world and hopefully at some point, learn more about the situation with Jess and Henry.

Trigger Warnings: Parental death, grief, matricide, patricide,

This was the perfect conclusion to an enjoyable series. I was so nervous as to how this book was going to play out; this story was so much more than a romance and I loved that. There was hidden dangers, betrayal, drama, some epic fights, and a happily-ever-after.

The first 50% of the book was Rick's life hanging in the precarious balance. Will he survive, won't he, how will the pack prepare if he doesn't. Meanwhile Damien is brought out of house arrest to try to save Rick. The tensions are running high for all the members of the pack. I liked the drama and tension here, and while Damien is in the middle of saving Rick, Carter realizes Damien is his mate. This just added another layer of chaos to already fragile situation.

In regards to Damien and Carter being mates, I liked how it wasn't as focused on them. They had the past two-years to develop a friendship and deeper relationship. The only thing missing is the truth from Damien and bonding. They have some tender, honest conversations amongst the lurking danger. The final battle had Damien blowing my mind, the man was filled with so much strength and I loved how his scenes played out.

I also loved when things came full circle with Rick seeing his father again. The whole story was just masterfully balanced and truly satisfying. I think the only thing I didn't care for was the Jess drama. A perfect ending to a delightful series.

I love this series but it took me so long to finally pick up this final book. I have been in a reading slump for most of this month but I flew through this book! It was so interesting to see the culmination of all the events leading up to this final book. You should definitely read this series in order, each book grows on the past one even though they follow different couples.
The couple in this one is Damien and Carter. Both were introduced in previous books but due to some magic, Carter never realized that Damien was his mate until now. I really loved the romance between the two of them. It was so sweet to read the moments between just the two of them as they worked through their mating with everything else happening around them.
Kirt Graves did an amazing job with the audio just like he has for the rest of the series. He makes it so easy to differentiate between the characters.
I am sad this series is over but so excited for what was teased for the future.

The Witch and the Doctor ends the Kincaid Pack series, but the author is already planning new stories (and maybe... series) in this universe. The story takes a bit of time getting to the action, the first half centering on attempting to heal their alpha, as well as Damian's relationship with his pack. It also gives some time to develop Damian and Carter's relationship.
When the action came, it was quick and decisive. And provided lots of fodder for new series(s). Knowing that this was the last book, I took my time reading. Because I was not ready for the series to be over. But the author's note promises it's really not. Hopefully we'll see more Kincaid pack... as secondary characters, perhaps.

That was a surprisingly satisfying conclusion to this series. I’m happy with how things turned out. For the most part.

My main complaints? Not enough time for the main couple to actually BE a couple, not enough sex (because I’m pervy that way 😇), AND the barely there hinted at Daddy kink that did NOT come to fruition (again, I’m a perv 🤷🏽‍♀️). Don’t call him baby boy then leave me hanging! Sigh.

But overall, I’m happy. I’d happily read this series again, and I’ll gladly read the spinoff book when it comes out later this year.

I hate that I didn’t enjoy this more. My biggest issue is it felt like Damien and Carter were the secondary plot. There was less romance in this last installment. Which I kind of get. There was a lot to finish up. But also, I’d have liked a little more of the story to have been them together.

I received a copy of the book from the author and this is my honest review.

I absolutely love The Witch and His Doctor by Kiki Clark!

This is the last book of her Kincaid Pack series, and I was not disappointed! It was epic and heartbreaking, and I was very satisfied by the end. (But bring tissues!!!)

Damien and Carter are so sweet together! I thought they wouldn't have the time they needed with all the crazy stuff happening, but the author made sure to give this couple the time they needed.

Now, there are still two big mysteries in this world, but the author is going to start a side series for that. And in the meantime, this book did have enough closure that I'm not too upset.

Overall a great conclusion to one of my favorite m/m paranormal romance series!!

Kincaid Pack Series - Final Thoughts

I stuck with this series for the overarching storyline-the coven politics, the pack alliances, and the way all the threads finally converged. The worldbuilding had real potential, and I often found myself wishing that bigger story had been the focus rather than the constant rotation of fated-mate romances.

By the final book, the age gap between Carter and Damien really broke immersion. It’s written as about twenty years, but it never fits the way they’re portrayed. Carter acts like someone in his mid-thirties-newly independent, still close in age to his siblings, starting the next stage of his career-while Damien reads as his equal, not someone a generation younger. The stated ages don’t add depth; they just make the relationship feel uneven. even the ages of Carter’s siblings don’t add up they seemed to be a decade younger than they would’ve been given Carter’s age.

What also felt like a missed opportunity was Carter’s attitude toward the fated-mate idea itself. Given that his father abandoned his mother for a fated mate, you’d expect Carter to carry the opposite belief-that love is a choice you commit to and nurture, not a compulsion you surrender to. Instead, he accepts the bond without reflection, which undercuts what could’ve been a powerful emotional through-line about choosing love and loyalty rather than being ruled by them.

I stayed for the world, but I wish the series had trusted that its politics and found-family themes were strong enough to stand alone-without leaning so hard on age gaps and “fate made me do it” romance shortcuts.

I would also love to read more about how Carter’s family came together; honestly, their tiny little bit of backstory was so intriguing to me. I want to read it all.
