It’s always so hard to rate an anthology, as my views are wildly different depending on the story. So I’m going to go through and review them all individually. There will probably be some spoilers but I’ll try to keep them to a minimum.

Novocain, 3 stars.
This one wasn’t bad, though not particularly memorable to me either. Still, a fine start to the anthology.

And the Geiger Counter Clicks, 4 stars.
This one was quite enjoyable. Liked the twist on the usual zombie story, and the ending was perfect, and caught me off guard even though it probably shouldn’t have.

The Closet, 2 stars.
There was nothing wrong with with this story. The suspense was good if that’s what you’re in to. It just wasn’t my thing.

Overhand Follow Through, 5 stars.
This one was amazing. I never thought I could feel so many different emotions so quickly, and it somehow managed to have kind of a hopeful ending. I also have to mention the characters in this one. It’s always amazing to me how authors of short stories can make you care so deeply about characters in such a short span of time, and that’s definitely true in this book. I loved the characters. They felt very real and I was really invested in how they would survive.

Our Last Day of School Ever, 4 stars.
Well, this one was certainly different, and that worked for me for the most part. This one almost had a Lord of the Flies feel to it. It was a different way to approach the situation, and I liked that. Not sure how I feel about the ending, but I guess it does make sense considering the story as a whole.

Opporation Z, 4 stars.
This was pretty good right up until the ending, but that twist was great. Really didn’t see that coming, and made the whole story so much darker somehow. I will say I wasn’t a huge fan of the characters in this one, but that could have just been a me thing.

Mavreides Gambit, 1 star.
It said at the beginning that the main character was the antagonist from another book, so maybe if I’d read that I would have enjoyed this more. As it stands though, this one wasn’t for me. The main character was unlikable, and I am sure this was deliberate. But there was just nothing else that was interesting to me and making me invested in the story. Again, I think this is mostly a me thing and not a reflection on the story itself.

Planted, 5 stars.
Loved this one. It was so different, had characters I cared about, and made me feel very emotional. It also stayed in my head for a long time after I read it for what that’s worth.

The Living Dead Man, 5 stars.
Another great story. The strength of this one was easily the characters. I could tell from about a quarter of the way through the story where it was going, but that didn’t lessen my enjoyment at all. It just made me feel a sinking dread that built as the story continued toward its inevitable conclusion.

The Mary Maskless Christmas Eve Ball, 4 stars.
This one was hilarious. I really hope I was supposed to be laughing, because I was, a lot. I just loved it, and it was nice to have something a bit more light hearted.

Chimera., 2 stars.
This certainly had a unique premise, but I couldn’t really get into it. Once again, I think this was just not for me, and I’m sure others will enjoy it much more.

Zombies at Red Rock, 4 stars.
I’m still debating what to give this. I just don’t know how I feel about it. I did like it though, and the ending will stay with me for a long time.

Rocco James, 5 stars.

I’m just gonna go ahead and give this all the stars. It was so short, and perfect, and the ending had me laughing for some reason, even thought I probably should have expected it.

Dead Tranquil, 3 stars.
This one was fine. A bit haunting, but nothing that really made it stand out for me personally.

Alexa, Stop, 5 stars.
I really loved this one, and it is tied for my favourite of the collection. It was not at all what I was expecting, in the best way possible. The characters were great, and it was one of the most unique takes on the zombie genre I have ever seen.

Hipster Appocalypse, 3 stars.
I didn’t enjoy a lot of this very much, but I’m sorry, the moment the first zombie came forward demanding tacos I was rolling. That made the story for me, and I’m smiling even as I write this. It was just so unexpected.

Dust, 3 stars.
I kind of wanted to like this one more than I did, but as it was it wasn’t bad. I liked Death as a character for sure.

Zombies, 3 stars.
The end of this was good, but other than that this one wasn’t really that memorable to me.

Running with Zombies, 5 stars.
Another great one. The characters in this felt like real people which is always good. I liked the relationship between the two characters. That was probably the best thing about the story. Also, I know I say this a lot, but I loved the ending.

Zombitropolis, 5 stars.
This main character gets all the stars for this one. I loved her so much. I don’t want to say too much for fear of giving away too much of the story, but she was just so strong and her struggles felt so real. Also the ending of this one scared me, a lot. I didn’t see it coming, not at all.

About Brains, 4 stars.
This one was creepy, especially the premonition aspect. Also, the perspective of a zombie is always interesting no matter what.

The Disencarnate, 5 stars.
This one made me cry so much. I was just so sad, and sweet, and had one of my favourite main characters ever. I can’t describe this book very well without giving a lot away, but it is probably the most unique take on the zombie genre in this book, at least in my opinion, and I have already gone back to reread parts of it.

The Death of Art, 2 stars.
This was ok, but again, not really my thing.

Bones, 4 stars.
Really liked how this was about the main character. Yes, the zombies were there, but it felt more like the story was based around the growth of that character and that really worked.

Picture show, 3 stars.
Interesting story with a lot of great tension, and I really like the title.

Dead Love, 4 stars.
Not really any likeable characters here, but still an enjoyable read with a double twist I didn’t see coming.

Parts of us, 4 stars.
A short, sad and terrifying little story that I will not be forgetting any time soon. And the imagery is going to stay with me for a long time.

Mostly dead, 3 stars.
I really don’t know how I feel about this one. It was different, I can say that, but I just don’t know what my thoughts are on it. I certainly won’t be forgetting it any time soon though.

Drawn and Quartered, 2 stars.
This one was just very forgettable for me. Disappointing as I usually love this author.

Still Dead Catolac, 4 stars.
A tragic way to end the anthology, but that’s not to say it wasn’t very good. The characters, well mostly the main character, felt incredibly real, and I got a bit emotional at the end. The imagery and suspense were also very good in this one.

General thoughts.

This was an overall very good anthology, despite a few stories I wasn’t a huge fan of. Something I really liked about it as a whole was the representation. Too often I’ll read anthologies, even ones that were published recently, and find next to no diversity. This anthology had quite a lot of that. It’s just something that is very important to me as a reader, and I like seeing it.
