I didn't grow up watching football, and for the first 21 years of marriage, didn't care a bit about sitting down to see a game. But for some unknown reason, I got interested in it this season and am thoroughly enjoying watching games with my hubby (who is completely overjoyed at my new found appreciation of the sport). Despite his very excited and patient explanations of all the ins and outs during games, I realized there is A LOT to know, so of course I borrowed some books.
This was a nice, short, concise introduction and helped me solidify some details that are hard to learn just from watching games, like all the names of the different positions and how the clock and various rules and penalties work. Definitely a good starting point. I'm well on my way.
This book is helpful, but can be fluffy at times, as if they were trying to make sure they hit 100 pages. I wish it went a bit more in-depth instead. The chapter on play calling and defensive coverages was what I was most interested in but was very brief.
Bastante bueno. Llevaba mucho sin leer un libro en inglés y elegí este porque es sencillo. Explica todo de manera clara y con buenos grafismos. Un buen arranque para los que quieran comenzar en el mundo de la NFL.
The sports writers, Jarett Holloway and Rafael Thomas, published Football-A Beginner’s Guide: Learn the Basics to Watch and Enjoy the Game in 2022. The book is a short introduction to American football. The book includes a glossary, a resource section, and references. The book has colored photographs. The book is focused on the National Football League (NFL). The book does have a section on “College Football” (Holloway & Thomas 127-128). I read the book on the Kindle. The book has a photograph of cheerleaders at the football game at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Holloway & Thomas 130). The book has colorful text. The book has an introduction. The first section is entitled “Football Primer: Watch a Game Today” (Holloway & Thomas 10-13). The first chapter is on “American Football Fundamentals” (Holloway & Thomas 15-36). Holloway and Thomas write, “In this chapter, you learn about the history of football and the season structure of the NFL” (Holloway & Thomas 15). The second chapter is on players in the NFL. The third chapter is on “the rules and flow of the NFL game” (Holloway & Thomas 63-87). Chapter 4 is on “football plays and explanations of what goes on during those plays” (Holloway & Thomas 90). Chapter 5 is entitled “Fantastic Moments in Football” (Holloway & Thomas 112-128). The Football: A Beginner's Guide is a well-executed, concise introduction to watching American football.
