Wolf, finally having defeated his first boss, moves on to the second theme of the dungeon.
The dungeon is no longer holding back, and visitors are beginning to show up on Aegis.
The Winter Wolf will have to continue freezing his path through the dungeon to survive, even if it means having to go through a murderous competitor on the way.
Shane Purdy is a college graduate with a Bachelors in Computer Science. At a young age he became fascinated with Fantasy books after reading the Wereworld series by Curtis Jobling, which led to a love of reading that continues to this day.
When he was younger you could almost always find him with a book in his hand (when he wasn’t busy with Band activities that is). As he got older, he started reading online webnovels as well. In June of 2021, after reading thousands of books, he decided to take the plunge and write a book of his own, starting with his first series, Dungeon from the Void.
He writes both high and low progression fantasy novels of varying genres, including Dungeon Core, LitRPG, Cultivation, Sci-Fi and more.
He does not use any sort of social media for his books other than Reddit, he has no Facebook pages, and his Facebook account is private and not public. Therefore if anyone finds public Facebook or other social media accounts outside of Reddit or Discord claiming to be him, they are fake.
This is second in a LitRPG series and you really want to read them in order. Seriously. Read in order
So you kind of know what you are getting. The theme of the floors change every ten levels, so there are some surprises. Not least of which is Wolf picking up a pet spider that he names Sapphire. And you have to give Purdy credit for how cute Sapphire is and how she actually humanizes Wolf a lot, taking him out of his loner head and showing how much he can care about others. So she ended up being pretty perfect as an addition.
There are other developments. I will admit that I'm not sure why Wolf is so put off by Diane (the ruler of the universe's werewolves). All she has done is try to help, and she's pretty straightforward about why. He's way more suspicious of her than internal evidence suggests so I wonder if that's the author projecting based on future plans that aren't clear or if Wolf is just supposed to be that closed-off. It doesn't play well either way, really.
Anyway, I'm still entertained, even if the author had to pull a completely manipulated event to make Wolf . I'm calling this another four stars and am still eager to see what's next.
A note about Chaste: Still a total loner. Still totally chaste.
While the pacing was addressed at the end of the book, it did nothing to alleviate the story being very stale. Other than the race change, this entire book was boring. The idea was interesting, that is what got you through book one. Book two relies on content, and that is falling flat. The world is inconsequential and the politics are the draw, but they are curtailed by the dungeon. The pacing needs to be drastically sped up, and the focus needs to be rethought.
Book 1 was a bit of a mixed bag, and now we have book 2.
Let me say first that I enjoyed this. Yes, it reads like a LitRPG synopsis more than a story but I found that I didn't mind. Instead of focusing only on the winter wolf, we head hop quite a bit as we move between Diane, the leader of the werewolves, the various announcers, other competitors (Deadshot, The Forsaken, the bug, and so on), and the winter wolf's family who are trying to eke out a living and survive.
We only see the winter wolf when something is happening. The same is true of all the other characters.
The editing is not great. The stat sheets are fairly regular as we watch the winter wolf progress as he moves up level after level. As I mentioned in the book 1 review, there are 10,000 levels to this dungeon. They end book 2 in the mid-twenties level, which leave 998 more books before we reach the end.
Despite the silly number of levels to the dungeon or the poor editing, I'm on board with this. Looking forward to book 3.
While everyone tries to survive the dungeon, some Administrators are trying to remove Wolf through other participants, his supporters continue to grow as he move over 10 million followers. As Wolf maintains his lead as forerunner he gains the first Mythic loot box which grants him a soul bound companion egg. He decides to keep it, and soon a cute little spider hatches, whom he names Sapphire. Don’t worry about her staying cute as that would not be helpful in a dungeon, so as her levels grows so does her size. We also see the Werewolf Empress change her planned methods for convincing Wolf to be her heir. Until Vulcan uses a cheap shot to push Wolf into a level 300+ Primal Werewolf and he’s bitten. Read on to find out how he survives and what he becomes as he trades his forerunner status for some training time as Sapphire gains abilities once her level matches his.
Book two continued with the main characters progression through a live streaming gaming matrix. The story is good and the characters likable, however the author has a lot of subplots developing alongside the main character. The plot line to date has a character going from level 1 to over a thousand in a dungeon and so far it has been level by level. That in itself would be multiple books, yet the author includes many subplots along with the simple leveling agenda. It becomes disjointed to the reader when the author keeps switching from the character's points of view, especially when the new point of view is dealing with a subplot, and takes away from the main character's journey. You can feel where the author wants to get eventually , I just don't know if as a reader I can stay engaged. Overall a good simple story with high expectations in world building and plot building.
Nice sequel. I liked that the pace picked up. I’m not really invested in the background politicking. It feels like it is there for increased drama and aside from sponsorship, which hasn’t happened, it doesn’t influence things much yet. Aegis is weird to me, too. I really like Wolf’s storyline. I don’t really get what all the leveling up is doing. Stats are really a thing but it seems like people get stronger with higher levels. The inability to move because of increased strength was kind of ridiculous especially when he gets a spell that triples his strength. Based off his reaction to dramatically increased strength, that spell seems like it will be useless. Anyways, fun story line and the Vulcan happenings were cool. I’m interested in seeing what happens with the next book.
good book, except for the use of nonstandard English word anyways.
Good story, fast paced, still not too crazy about the main character. There’s plenty of intrigue going on that makes me want to keep reading the story. I just hate the authors use of the word anyways, it is not standard or correct English. While you were writing this treatise and people are reading it you’re giving them the non-standard incorrect form of the word anyway. Stop it! That’s my only gripe with the book. as a college student. You should know better and be more educated than that. Going on to read the next book.
I certainly wasn’t expecting the titular change to be what we got. That was both exciting and shocking when I came to light - and I wonder how this will work for Diane and even Leo.
I do wonder what Wilhelm has against Wolf though. I understand, sorta, about the fire harbinger’s antipathy for Wolf, but not really Wilhelm’s motivations. With Sapphire synched up, does that basically double Wolf’s effectiveness in battling monsters? And will he easily be able to re-acquire his forerunner status?
I love the curve that is thrown at our mc. He goes from no to oops. It's honestly hilarious. I absolutely love his companion, even knowing her species. It's also amusing how Wolf reacts to any player other than Vulcan. Ngl, I kept expecting a switch from god-complex to Star Trek fan. Understanding motivation doesn't change much in my perception. I am extremely curious what the difference between werewolves and lycanthropes will be. In any story I've read they were synonymous.
The Change (Rise of the Winter Wolf, Book 2) ramps everything up from Book 1—harder fights, higher stakes, and a more dangerous dungeon that feels less like training and more like survival. Wolf’s progression is satisfying and intense, but what really hooked me is how the story makes his growth feel costly: every new advantage pushes him further from who he used to be, and the book doesn’t shy away from the darker edge of that evolution. Fast-paced, punchy, and addictive, it’s the kind of sequel that ends with you immediately wanting the next one.
Liked this one more than the first book, but still not quite enough to give it a 5. Effectively, the last one was a 3.5 and this a solid 4. I liked the semi bait-and-switch re: the title, and the character developed a bit more. A certain enemy was removed which is always good too. This is developing well and not getting bogged down in a floor-by-floor of the dungeon, so I'll be keeping an eye out for book 3.
The Rise of the Winter Wolf Book: 2 More of the same, so if you liked the previous book, that's a plus. Other than gaming elements normally found in RPGs (fighting, killing, etc) there isn't any objectionable material, such as explicit sex. On the plus side, there's no messy romance subplots (at least nothing that takes center stage). Relaxing, low stress read with wholesome elements of a sort, I suppose.
There may have only been two or three times in my life that I say a sequel is better than the first book.
While still easy to read, and most YA readers would love that, the introduction of words with greater than six characters has improved the read over the pilot book. I love that the author still includes some of the characters snark, but was surprised at first by how dark the story was. To his credit, there is a reason
Just read the series is all I can say about how good it is after only the first two books, it’s just great all around, but that is just my opinion. The world building and character development is just refreshing, I enjoy the fact that not every other page has intimate scenes or any at all that’s a big plus, so if you enjoy laughing and face palming because of the trouble the MC gets into then by all means read the series!
The first book set the the world and rules fairly well. The second book moved the story forward very well. The main character is likable and, unlike similar stories, tends to do the reasonable thing as he faces challenges. The supporting characters are starting to be fleshed out. Can't wait to see where this story goes.
Wolf keeps advancing and evolving as he slaughters his way up the levels , he has several interactions with other players which is refreshing and the administrators continue their machinations in the background. Didn't enjoy this as much as book one as the concepts novelty was wearing a bit thin , I'll still continue with the series.
I think the first book sounded a bit choppy in parts, but slowly improved throughout. This book on the other hand, improved by leaps and bounds! I saw much improvement in grammar and the overall flow of the book, and the story is so unique while also keep that classic LitRPG vibe. THIS IS SUCH AN AMAZING BOOK KEEP IT UP!!!!
Great blend of litrpg and survival game show! Despite the campiness of the game show parts, the actual story and background are definitely interesting to follow. On to the next!
As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.
Quick and fun read, although there are some inconsistencies within the book, and the author really loves to overuse the word “whilst”. Other than some minor technicalities, the story and created universe is unique, fast paced and is overall a fun series to dive into.
not as good as book one, but still a good read. Looks like book 3 should be out soon from author afterwards, plus a quicker pace which i supporte. Book one had lots of new things from this type of book.
Loving this series so far, the on,y minor bone to pick is how the MC is love adverse. I can’t wait for book three, I wonder how many administrators will come out of this dungeon.
Really enjoying this series, can't wait for the next one, different plot which is easy to read, some parts (not many) bog down but i have no problem with them. Can recommend reading this and other's of this series.
Good book that isn't hard to read. Story continued from the previous book very well, and other than a few points I wasn't too pleased with, it was very good. I like the pace increase, but also don't particularly enjoy the time jumps. 8/10
If you enjoyed the first books new skills, fresh fights, and character you’ll love the second instalment. Wolf becomes even more of a star but trouble awaits as we find out what “the change” is.
Simply put, if you liked the first one, you'll like this. It's really just a continuation of the first one, and that is a good thing. I'm already looking forward to the next one.
Hella I would just like to say that this book was a genuine pleasure to read, excellent writing and story building. I love the world you have created and I can’t wait to see what wolf will do next. Great job dude
I am thoroughly enjoying this series!! The writer is keeping the focus on Wolf but still adds some interesting side characters.I just wish the third one is out already!!
