love this book! it's a great starter if you're looking to learn about modern chinese history from a marxist perspective. it provides a clear understanding of the development of the ccp's politics, the rise and fall of maoism, and the conditions that laid the basis for the 1989 protests. the 2025 reprint also includes a new introduction by charlie hore that talks about china today and how 1989 has shaped the approach of the chinese ruling class.
A clear Marxist analysis of the rise of Maoism as a form of deflected revolution, and the twists and turns of its bureaucratic elite up to and including its biggest threat to date, the movement that culminated in the Tiananmen Square occupation. Written in 1990 but the account still holds up well today.
