Legend says that whoever is bitten by Nic Cage and lives becomes a Nic Cage themselves...
Stanley Miller got bit by Nic Cage in the park. Things got worse from there. If his roommate Cameron and Wilford Brimley are to be believed, the world is now on a fast track to the apocalypse. Unless Stanley can save it. When the moon rises, Stanley feels the change overcome him and Nicolas Cage takes over.
With the first Cage still out there, turning more and more people into raving, angry, Hollywood action stars, can Stanley use his tenuous grasp on his own sense of self to track the source of the infection and stop it once and for all? Or are we all destined to fall victim to the curse?
This was absolutely incredible! A book about people being bitten by Nicolas Cage and then turning into him?! I know that type of nightmare scenario keeps me up at night…often. Cage is such a tremendous actor. He can literally take any role and make it into something special. My personal favorite is his role as HI McDunnough from Raising Arizona. So this entire story takes the core concepts of werewolves and lycanthropy and just puts this creepy, yet wildly entertaining spin on it all. It never takes itself too seriously and has boatloads of hilarious moments, but also retains a certain mystery and uneasiness about it. Toss in a few unexpected twists and you have yourself one helluva great story. The characters were also all endearing and fun to experience, and I just had such a ball reading this story. And to end this classy review with an oh so appropriate Cage quote, let’s go with ‘Put the bunny back in the box.’
The idea that Nic Cage was spreading like a virus should have been the greatest absurdity in the world.
There's an outrageous danger lurking the streets and parks at night – Nicolas Cage. He attacks unassuming people and whoever is attacked but survives, turns into Nic Cage the next night. The transformation includes turning into Cage, doing adventurous stuff like breaking into museums and stealing dinosaur bones, sometimes injuring and killing people and all the while talking in Nic Cage movie quotes. If the attacks continue, the whole world is going to turn into Nic Cage in less than … only three years. This needs to be stopped immediately.
Stanley, who is recently attacked, is determined to find the Alpha Cage and kill him in order to all WereCages return to normal. Who he finds at the end of the chain, is not very surprising, honestly.
Critical infrastructure. Low income housing. Wind farms and solar panels. An end to crime. It's an army of powerful Nic Cages, Stanley. Try to think outside the box.
As a fan, I absolutely loved the An American Werewolf in London references and the whole book was just a very fun read with lots of hilarious details. I'm not feeling very good at the moment, and even though this book didn't succeed in picking me up completely, it certainly helped put a smile on my face.
Such a fun read, I don't think you need to be a fan of Nic Cage to enjoy this one but it would certainly help if you have at least a passing familiarity with his characters.
The main character, Stanley, was very much autistic coded and I was so there for all the autismcore moments he was having. The humor was great, the chaos even better and it was super quick read.
To me, there is so something so intrinsically humorous in the idea of getting bitten by a Nic Cage and turning into Nic Cage at night that I knew I had to read this book when I came across it on twitter. It's a lot of fun, with a great story, an engaging protagonist, and a satisfying end. It is of course also a homage to the actor. You don't have to be a fan of Nic Cage to enjoy this (I'm not, though I love several of his movies), but if you are a fan, do NOT miss this one! Highly recommended!
How can a book that’s about people turning into Nic Cage be so thoughtful, scary, funny, and have such a strong emotional core? There’s only one way to find out - read it.
I loved the character of Stanley. He’s very likable and relatable. His backstory was great.
There are some really clever and funny things in this book. My only slight nitpick would be it was a little repetitive with Stanley wondering what to do, and there wasn’t enough Cage (there could never be enough for me, in fairness).
I'm a big fan of comedy horror (think John Dies at the End) and Ian Fortey delivers like a boss in WereCage, which isn't that surprising since he used to be a writer for cracked.com back in the good old days when David Wong of JDatE fame and Robert Evans of Behind the Bastards podcast used to work there too. That Era produced some truly incredible comedic writers and Ian Fortey is like 5 of them. He's really an awesome talent and I tore through this book laughing and freaking out waiting to find out what Nic Cage werewolves would get up to next.
I had such high hopes for this. I saw the premise and I was excited and looking forward to something over the top ridiculous and fun...and sadly it didn't deliver for me. I really wanted this to GO there...like...all the way there. But instead it was pretty tame, characters were boring, and I had a hard time getting through it. The writing style just wasn't for me...nothing hit the way I wanted it to. 5 star premise with so much potential...but it didn't work for me.
I found out about this book via Twitter, and the concept was just insane enough to make me do a double-take... and pique my interest. A novel about a guy getting bit by his favorite actor and turning into an identical version of him? There was no way this could be anything but weird goofy fun, and I had to give it a look. One trip to Amazon and a Kindle purchase later, I had "WereCage"... and I'm pleased to say it was exactly what I expected it to be. It's a silly, goofy action/comedy/horror romp, and it left a huge smile on my face.
Stanley Miller is mainly content with his life -- working a dead-end job at the grocery store, watching the Nicholas Cage movies his dad loved -- but his life is changed forever when he encounters Nic Cage in the park and is bitten by him. At first he's simply weirded out by the fact that his favorite actor just sank his teeth into him... but that weirdness gets cranked up to eleven when Stanley finds himself turning into Nic Cage every night! And worse, the original Nic Cage is still out there, biting other people and transforming them into WereCages! Stanley will need the help of his shut-in roommate, an attractive nurse, and a strip-mall psychic to stop Cage's curse from taking over the town... and the world.
The premise of this book is absolutely silly, even dumb, but just because an idea is dumb doesn't mean it can't be FUN. And I'm sure there are authors out there who would have taken this same idea and turned it into some serious in-depth commentary on the nature of celebrity and fanboy-ism. But this book has little interest in making a statement -- it's a funny horror romp, adding a strange but hilarious twist to the traditional werewolf/zombie/supernatural story arc. And yes, the book is littered with Nicholas Cage quotes -- everything from Con Air to National Treasure to the remake of The Wicker Man gets referenced here. What else could one expect from a book where Nic Cage is not just a character but a concept?
On its technical merits, the story is solid as well. It moves along at a nice clip, the characters aren't terribly fleshed-out but still have some decent depth to them, and the story has a nice balance of action and humor that doesn't feel like it's trying TOO hard to be funny. It's short -- less than a hundred pages -- but that just means that the story doesn't overstay its welcome, and doesn't feel the need to pack in a ton of fluff to pad the length out and wear its central idea too thin.
This book is exactly what I expected it to be, and gave me exactly what I hoped for -- a funny and light read to break up some of the heavier books I've been reading lately. "WereCage" is very much like a Nic Cage movie, meant to be enjoyed with a big goofy smile on your face.
I wasn't expecting much from this, but I figured at least it was cheap and would go nicely with my copy of The Haunting Of Nicolas Cage. It's formatted a bit weird, but once I got past the lack of page numbers I was along for the ride. It's certainly something that will resonate more with Cage enthusiasts with the quotes and easter eggs, but it's accessible enough for casual Cage fans as well. I can't see people who dislike Cage wanting to read a book about a WereCage, but it's you're out there let me know what you think. I can't see Cage ever doing a film of this, especially this close to Massive Talent, but I'd totally watch a film adaptation with Andy Samberg reprising his Cage role from SNL.
Cutting through a local park while walking home at night, Stanley Miller is bitten in the park by actor Nicholas Cage. Thereafter, Stanley finds himself physically turning into the actor, and while in that form, uncontrollably spouts out lines from Nic Cage movies, and gives in to behavior that is somewhat bizarre but rather typical for the actor.
Throughout the story, my opinion of it was a steady 4 star review. As I approached the end, I found myself thinking that depending on how the author ends the story will determine my final rating. As such, my rating is bumped up to 5 stars. The reading made for an enjoyable and entertaining evening. After finishing the book I had the strangest urge to watch a Nicholas Cage movie!
Premise: man gets bitten by Nic Cage and is shocked to find that he starts to become Nic Cage. If you think the premise is ridiculous, you’re right. If you think a premise this ridiculous is doomed to fail, you are wrong. Wildly entertaining, this feels like some sort of hopeful fan fiction screenplay that never got picked up and ended up as a novella. If anyone knows Nic Cage or knows someone who knows him or has a cousin with an ex who knows the wife of the guy who fixes his car or something…I beg you, no, I implore you to bring this story to his attention. It’s a story that deserves to be on a screen and it’s a story that only Cage could bring to the screen. It’s ridiculous and funny and immensely entertaining and simply glorious.
Honestly, I saw Renfield was coming out soon and then saw this book, figured it was a cute little twist of fate. This was super fun though, could guess some bits, I still got thrown for loops and twists. Not sure if I'd do it again, but definitely gonna recommend at my next Cage movie.
Whoever is bitten by Nicholas Cage becomes Nicholas Cage and lives on to bite others. It’s an amusing idea and an easy read that plays out like an American werewolf in London meets Nic Cage. Unfortunately, there is enough in those two sentences to give you all you need and there is little invention or development beyond that. Enjoy the idea, forget the book.
I was not expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. The protagonist isn’t my favorite starting off, and he’s not the most likeable, but he was pretty perfect for the role. I’ve got a love-hate relationship with Nicolas Cage, but I think it more be more love after this book. Definitely recommend this if you’re interested in a quirky, odd, entertaining urban fantasy, or if you like Nic Cage.
a bit slow at times but a great romp overall, would love to see a film adaptation and/or another pass at editing to clean it up and make the characters more compelling lead character and his roommate should end up together
Asks the burning question: what would you do if you got bitten by a Nicolas Cage, and thereafter turned into a Nicolas Cage under the full moon? Deeply funny and borne out of true love for Nic, which I can only admire and appreciate as a Nic connoisseur myself.
I would have appreciated Stanley getting more *moment* at the end to be a hero but I was giggling my way though the whole thing. I needed some ridiculousness today
