I will just say it, is this book worth it? Absoulutely The book goes over the history of North American and English smoking. There are tons of beautiful finished projects created throughout the book and helpful illustrations and photos. The text is written in an easy to understand manner. I like the book even more because it shows you what to do AND its doable. I think those starting their historical costuming journey will love this book and get tons of use from it.
This book is mostly about using smocking to create texture for decoration, not as a functional part of fabric control. It has two sections, the first for North American smocking and the second for English smocking. If you want information about smocking for fullness control or as part of the construction of a garment, you'll need another book.
