Little dude LOVE LOVE LOVES this one!! Keeps asking for, "hatch an egg?!" at bed time. Luckily our library hasn't failed me yet so we've been able to check out this and the "Bubbles" book as well. He reads along with me now and it just slays me every time. These books are a hoot!
HATCH AN EGG is a silly and cute graphic novel about two friends who believe they have found a bear egg. Bobo and Pup-Pup find something brown and fuzzy that has fallen from the sky. Bobo is pretty sure it is a bear egg, since they are also brown and fuzzy. They decide to try to help it hatch, and they ask birds for advice. They follow the advice, but the egg just is not hatching. They set out some honey to entice it out, and when they wake from their nap, two baby bears have wandered over to get the honey, and they believe the egg has hatched. The book ends with the duo deciding to find another egg to hatch.
What I loved: This is a simple story told in dialogue with a light graphic novel format. For readers who are not yet used to reading graphic novels, this is a great early start, as it has minimal panels on each page spread (often just one across the pages). The amount of text on each page is very limited with only a phrase from each of Bobo and Pup-Pup and much of the story told through the accompanying images. This will work well for early independent readers who can get into the story with reading the brief text on the quickly turning pages.
The illustrations capture the story well, with plenty of bright colors and expressive characters. The illustrations will help children get context clues for words they do not yet know in the text. The story itself is infused with humor and is sure to make children giggle, as they will understand that there are not bear eggs as well as the misunderstanding at the end.
Final verdict: HATCH AN EGG is a cute and humorous graphic novel that will work well for young readers. Recommend for children who enjoy laughing and are early in their chapter book/graphic novel journey.
