“Live long enough and you’ll see, people are the worst monsters.”
Defeated. Betrayed. Exiled. Jett Lasting finds himself alone in the place he fears more than death itself: the Outlands. Wracked with guilt and desperate to find his friends, he journeys through the barren wastelands where the air itself is a toxic fume. Jett soon discovers that the Outlands are not what he was led to believe, but in many ways worse. Filled with horrifying monsters, bandits, and marauders, the Outlands prove to be a living nightmare.
Jett must find a way to survive if he’s going to return to Dios and get his revenge. Amidst the dangers, Jett is surprised to learn he is not alone in his desire to bring down the Patriarch. Potential allies are rallying forces to invade Dios. The tides of retribution are growing. The stakes have never been higher, as almost every choice is a matter of life and death.

Whether it is crafting ideas on the world, sharing beliefs, or imagining other worlds entirely, Tyler is passionate about the power of words and stories to change lives. He writes both fiction and non-fiction and has published books in both.
The second installment in the series... Well written, its ful of action...
A very interesting fantasy series. And yes, I want to read the third installment.
Darker as the "Sea of Ink and Gold" trilogy by Traci Chee. A believable world populated with monsters and villains.
Its about the value of friendship... Never to give up, no matter what!!!
Recommendation to all fantasy lovers...
Dean;)
PS: Due to my mental health issues, momentarily I cannot render more elavorated reviews. Suffice it to say that I loved it, the four stars well deserved!!!
Thanks to you all for your patience, for your support, and for reading my reviews.
"The Tides of Reckoning" was full of action and, much like the first book in the series, excellent twists. Though this one didn't have the same level of betrayals, backstabbing, and subterfuge, the environment itself served to keep things ever changing and on edge.
The book opens in quite an epic way: Jett, the main character, encounters some pretty gnarly monsters. Unarmed, without any form of sustenance or shelter, Jett must figure out how to get to any form of settlement in order to survive. Of course, given that this is a book and books usually require certain amounts of communication with other sentients, I'll go ahead and spoil that he does - in one form or another - find people.
Something that this book did was it accounted for the open threads at the end of book 1. Whether alive, dead, or somewhere in between, the characters in book 1 at least return or are mentioned long enough to figure out the next step and set up the next part of the story. As far as the non-Jett characters went, I rather enjoyed what happened to Lilly - her transformation was pretty epic. Pay attention to Becka, as well; she got a bigger slice of the screen this time, and her development added a lot to the story.
Continuing with the trend of speaking about the ladies, I'll move on to the new characters: Kali. In addition to creating a love triangle alongside Jett and Lilly, Kali is another strong female character trying to make her way in a very patriarchal society. Something I like about Edwards's writing is how Jett, the narrator, still sees things through a slightly patriarchal perspective (at least to a point - he's by far not the worst in the book, and he tries hard), but Jett can still realize he's been thinking about things wrong. It constantly shakes up the feelings and information within the pages and shows how mood and tone are distinct and matter so much. It's delicious how Edwards can take male gaze and flip it on its head. With Kali, especially in something he does at the end, Edwards does this very well.
As far as concepts go, I'm hoping there will be more about the Triblings in book 3. The Triblings are native to the Outlands and, as such, aren't quite the same as the human outcasts of Dios or the other domed cities. Rowan, in "The Tides of Reckoning", is the primary Tribling of note, but he's quiet and doesn't say much. We learn that he's had a rocky and traumatic past, but beyond that, he's mysterious and superpowered. I'd like to know more about them - and maybe why they haven't become the leaders of the wastelands.
Last, and I can't say much without spoilers, the villain in this book was very good. I think I actually liked him better than the Patriarch because he had a backstory that was interesting.
Complaints about the book were mostly that some of the fights and challenges were solved by luck or another, uncontrollable event. It was never a big letdown, but sometimes that tricky environment would work for the characters in unexpected but positive ways. It also worked against them at other times, so it should balance out, but I rarely like convenient solutions to problems in book. It's just the way I am. Jett's strengths and weaknesses also didn't feel terribly consistent; I get the feeling he's supposed to be like Hazel in Watership Down, wherein he's really good at delegation and motivation. However, he's also sometimes got powers in terms of personal combat, or strategy, or whatever is convenient. Other times, he doesn't, and it often depends on plot. Like with the random environmental effects, it's never a major dealbreaker, but it's a subtle thing that I noticed.
In my experience, sophomore novels have a tendency to decrease in overall quality when compared to their predecessors. However, that was NOT the case with The Tides of Reckoning. Every aspect that I enjoyed in The Outlands only got better and the elements I had been less thrilled with were vastly improved upon. Tyler Edwards' creativity is once again on display as he introduces us to new locations, characters, and other fun/horrifying surprises along the way.
A large part of the world building in book 1 had been dedicated to the structure and culture within the city of Dios. Here, we finally get to explore what lies beyond the walls as Jett has been exiled into the Outlands. Even though the settings are quite different in comparison, they definitely feel like part of the same world. I particularly enjoyed how the slang used in the first book was carried over and expanded on in this one.
Since I had really bonded with the characters in book 1, I had my doubts about whether I would feel a similar fondness for those we would meet here. Not only did I find some of the additional characters to be just as endearing, but my love soared for those that had been previously established. I never expected to adore these characters as much as I do. I was also pleased that my earlier issue about some of the side characters being glossed over was addressed here. While there is still more to uncover about them, I loved getting to see them shine a bit more while also learning about their backgrounds. For readers who prefer more reprehensible characters, the new villains are far more compelling than those featured in The Outlands and are without a doubt absolutely despicable.
Also, as someone who felt the female characters and the roles they had been given in book 1 were rather lacking, I was incredibly delighted with the improvements made here. Even the romance element, which I didn't much care for initially, was revamped and made far more appealing.
As far as the plot, I won't give anything away, but I feel confident that fans of the first book will be thrilled by all the twists and developments. While Dios had its fair share of dangers, the Outlands is just as terrifying as we had been led to believe. The action scenes continue to be a highlight as they were well-paced and described. One of the biggest surprises to me was the number of times I was impacted emotionally - whether due to excitement, shock, fear, or sadness. It's rare for me to cry when reading, but this one managed to push me to that point. That alone is an impressive feat.
Overall, this was a fantastic continuation. It's clear that the author was aware of the issues raised with the last book and worked to ensure that this product was the best it could be. I absolutely enjoyed my time reading this and would recommend it without question. Even if you weren't crazy about The Outlands, I suggest you give this one a try.
I thought I loved the first book. But, if this is what loving a book feels like, I guess I was wrong. Tides of Reckoning picks up the story of Jett Lasting and his friends as they find themselves trying to survive the hostile conditions of the Outlands filled with monsters, toxic rain, marauders, and the depraved. I had a hard time putting this one down. It was so good!
Excuse me but that cliffhanger?!?! This book was amazing. I loved the first book, and somehow this was even better. I need everyone to read this & get just attached as me. 😭

𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐬 After the events in book 1 - Jett Lasting finds himself exiled in the Outlands. He expects a slow death when wandering in this toxic land but he is met with a whole new reality. Split up from his friends & welcomed into a strange town, Jett must decide who he can trust & ally himself with. His guilt haunts him as he searches for his friends & is met with endless life or death obstacles.
𝐌𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 Book 2 is filled with even more adventure & plot twists. I love the fast paced action, the incredible world building, & the diverse characters that lead us through this epic journey. I am addicted to this series & the way Tyler Edwards paints a vivid picture of this vast & brutal civilization. I can’t get enough of the found family & the strategic plots that keep me on the edge of my seat.
𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 There are never ending obstacles in this book that are constantly forcing Jett & his friends to think quick on their feet. This isn't just game of who is the better fighter but who can out think & plan a better scheme. It's high stakes, its life or death and there is really no room for error.
𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 There is much more character development in this one. Book 1 gives you a good view on who everyone is & their relationship to each other, but in book 1 we really explore the past/backstories more & get deeper into things. I just love all the characters in this & feel so attached to them!
Plot: This story follows Jett Lasting after the events in book 1, and although book 1 provides you such a detailed, well written world, book 2 offers a brand new one. The creativity with the cities, the creatures, and the medical necessities is top tier!
Characters: Our main character is still Jett. I struggled a bit with this impulsive responses when surprised. But the dude has been through hell and back, and is now navigating something he has zero clue about. So, its forgivable! Tyler did a great job bringing more life to the side characters in this book, which was a nice touch as I feel like even though I loved them in book one, I'm part of the family in book 2!
Overall: I loved book one, truly enjoyed book 2 and cannot wait for the closure that book 3 will bring! If you like dystopian universes, give this a try. If you are new, maybe wait a bit, as this has some intense world-building and ideas that you need to be prepared for!
*Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy to beta-read in exchange for an honest review.*
The Tides of Reckoning follows on from The Outlands. This book ramped up the intrigue and the action, and I loved it!
Jett has been exiled to The Outlands alone, and he has to navigate himself around an area he’s never been to before, and only heard horror stories about. Jett and his friends were exiled at different times, he feels incredibly guilty so decides he will find and unite them. He journeys to find his friends through these wastelands, and discovers new settlements, and maybe new friends. The world of Dios is so much more complex an interesting compared to book one. We discover more about who, and what, lives these.
I loved how Jett put his friends before himself in this novel. A lot of what he does in this book is for his friends, and you can really admire his personality. There is a lot of character development over the course of Jett’s storyline. He seems to believe in himself and his ability to lead more.
I loved the new characters. I thought Kali was an incredibly strong female character. Rowan is a great addition too, and I enjoyed finding out more about him. Jett’s relationship with these characters grew slowly but strongly. It was such a joy to read and follow their relationships, particularly Kali and Jett’s! Friendships from the previous book were in this and developed much stronger.
Comparing this to the original version of the first book, it is so different! I enjoyed the first book, but really loved this one. The characters felt more real and it was easier to have an emotional connection with them. The storyline itself was intriguing and I couldn’t put it down. There were some unanswered questions that I think will be answered in the next instalment, and I can’t wait to read it and find out what happens to these characters!
I thought The Outlands (book one) was a very good read. The Tides of Reckoning (book two) in the series is considerably better.
Despite being betrayed, then separated from his friends, Jett Lasting must literally hit the ground running in the dreaded Outlands. Packed with monsters, environmental dangers and really bad bad guys, Jett faces a series of new nightmares with Jumanji-like pacing.
Book two gets us deeper into the characters (favorites from the Dios exiles as well as new allies), and the world building elements are wildly creative. If you liked book one, grab book two of this series. It’s a wild ride. (Already looking forward to book three).
Jett & his friends have been exiled to the outlands...very slowly. Making it difficult to find them very fast once they have been given their kit & kicked out. Jett quickly learns to navigate through the harsh & hostile environment & creatures. Jett soon finds out who he could trust (blindly) & whom he cannot. He then sets to work on trying to get all of his friends back after hearing about what has happened to them. After everything he now finds himself blindly trusting another familiar stranger back into Dios... A great book two. I loved all the creepy creatures, the battles and character growth. Although I have a problem with Jetts flaw of blindly trusting strangers it certainly leads to some interesting happenings. This series is proving to be awesome. I read book two in 2 days, ha ha. Definitely enjoying the writing & recommend to all dystopian lovers!
Wow what a book, my word I loved it. I really enjoyed the first book but this one just gripped me even more and I didn’t think that was possible. So many amazingly thought out creatures and the world description was incredible. I cannot wait to dive into the third book to see how this goes.
Book 2 develops on the incredible first book and hits us with large amounts of emotion and humour. Tyler develops the world amazingly, yet again and the story is absolutely stunning. This also includes an incredible set up for book 3. Please tell me you've read this series by now?
“Live long enough and you’ll see, people are the worst monsters.” This book grabbed me from the very first line and kept me hooked until the final page. Reading “The Tides of Reckoning” felt like I was thrown into a world that I couldn’t look away from. It’s one of those books that keeps you up at night because you just have to know what happens next.
Jett Lasting’s journey is intense and heartbreaking. Betrayed and exiled, he’s thrown into the unforgiving Outlands, a toxic wasteland where nothing is what it seems. As he searches for his friends and tries to survive, you can feel every ounce of his desperation, guilt, and determination. His emotional depth makes him such a compelling character, and I found myself rooting for him every step of the way.
The Outlands… oh my gosh, TERRIFYING. I was ALL IN. And wow, the shift in tone from the suffocating fear of Dios to the horrors of the Outlands was absolutely brilliant. Toxic air, horrifying monsters, ruthless bandits…this place is a living nightmare. The way the author described everything made it feel so real, like I was trudging through the wastelands with Jett.
The found family dynamic here is everything. Their loyalty, humour, and constant fight for survival make the bleak world a little brighter. It’s like you’re right there with them, sharing in their fear and the moments of joy they manage to find, even when things seem hopeless.
The plot? Absolutely wild. There were so many moments where I gasped out loud or had to stop and process what just happened. The twists kept coming, and I loved how the stakes kept rising. The world-building is dark and relentless, but there’s always a flicker of hope, a sense of purpose that keeps pulling you in.
If you’re into dystopian fantasy with high stakes, unforgettable characters, and a world that feels terrifyingly real, this series is a must-read. Let me know if you’re ready to dive into it. I’m dying to chat with someone about this wild ride! 🗡️🔥
I love this world. It's dark and fun all in one package. The characters are charming as they were before. However, some things were a bit lesser than what came before. For example, there is a massive part in the middle of the book about Jett saving his friends and saving other people. He was more about saving his friends than other people. I understand both parts, but it was a bitter pill to swallow because I assume Jett is the guy that would save everyone. However, this is consistent with his character. He went out of his way to save Lily in the first book when he most likely shouldn't have. I find this to be a unique character flaw. Most protagonists will save as many people as possible, including their friends. However, Jett does prioritize his friends over the lives of many. I find this interesting, and I would love to see what can happen when this is genuinely stretched to its limits. We explored and experienced new lands, places, and creatures throughout the book. There is a lot of variety and extraordinary encounters. Some of these points feel like they take a bit longer than necessary but are still enjoyable. Morton felt like another Stone from the first book, but the Marauders were cool. Schmitty was absolutely terrible but in the villain's way. When he started about how he sees women, I was like: "Ah yes, he will die later on." I love the use of Victor for his advice. It is hard to let the past go when someone has taught you so much about it. Glad that it haunts Jett yet guides him at the same time, and that ending great squeal bait! Overall, I loved the book, but I found myself enjoying the first book a bit more than this one. The pacing was a little off for my liking, but it was still good. I am hyped for the third book nonetheless."The Rise of the Fallen."

"Because he's family. You don't ever give up on family."
Tyler Edwards created a terrifying yet beautiful world filled with complex characters and situations.
A lot of sequels tend to be lesser than the first book, but WOW! The Tides of Reckoning is absolutely incredible. Yet again, Tyler made me cry, smile, and laugh. His writing is so powerful in this book.
At the heart of the book, in my opinion, it's about doing what needs to be done for your family, particularly the family you choose in a chaotic world.
I cannot wait for the 3rd installment of The Outlands series after that astonishing cliffhanger.
The Outlands Saga just gets better and better! Having been exiled from Dios, Jett Lasting finds himself in the Outlands and separated from his friends who have also been exiled following the betrayal they didn't see coming. I really enjoyed Jett's character growth in The Tides of Reckoning, he seemed to not exactly let go of his anger but at least accept it gain some clarity. Kali and Rowan were brilliant additions to the series, and I look forward to more of them. There is a death of a character that it genuinely did not occur to me would be a possibility. Kane, although a bit of a psycho has become a firm favourite alongside Spike, who I think will always be a favourite.
I thought the first book was good, but this really ups the ante. Genuinely, this series is just getting better and better. I feel like Jett had quite a lot of character growth throughout The Tides of Reckoning. He's not letting his anger rule him anymore. Kali and Rowan are awesome additions to the overall story. And even though he's a bit psycho, Kane has become a favourite character of mine alongside Spike, who I think will always be a favourite. Thank you to Tyler Edwards for sending me a free audible code. My review is voluntary and of my own thoughts.
I'm so glad you are interested in book 2. I put a lot more time into the characters and the pacing of the book. Overall I think the final product turned out much better. It's not perfect by any means as I'm not sure any book really is.
I am in the process of writing book 3 and things are really starting to come together for that.
My current plan is for the series to be 4 books. After that, who knows?
The audiobook is in production now, which I am really excited about.

UGH! Tyler's at it again! I didn't see the book going this way (honestly, not that I had any thoughts at all, lol).
Always with the abundance of characters you love so many of and can't pick one favourite character, haha. Pulling on emotional heart strings with every new turn!
OF COURSE, I was done dirty to my heart strings when one of my favourites said goodbye to the rest of the group.
Kane… I think he will forever live in my brain, haha. He's amazing.
Thank you again, Robert. For being the best narrator to bring this story to life!
I am SOOOO excited for book 3 🥹💚 I can't wait until that one is available.
This book started out pretty good, until the author decided to add in a very graphic description of some people getting eaten alive. I couldn't even finish the book after that. It was good, but that ended it for me. The sad thing is that I really liked this, and was invested in the characters. If you feel like you can handle that kind of stuff, then go ahead and read.
Last we saw Jett he was being cast into the outlands. A place of death and destruction where humankind can not last or is it? Tyler Edwards has really brought back the dystopian era with this trilogy of books. They pull you in and keep you on the edge of your seat guessing as to what will happen next.
