Rate this book
Frustrated? Burned out? Stuck? It's time to reframe things and move forward!

You know the drill. Work your ass off, second guess yourself, stress over all the details and watch others get ahead while you stand still. Or...you’ve landed that great position and your impostor syndrome won’t let you enjoy it for two seconds. It sucks, you’re tired of it and you want something different for yourself. But there’s an unexpected reason it happens and a way we can take control.

Unstuck shows women how to harness the power of perspectives to re-envision and reinvent their approach to work and, well, life, to achieve more, stress less and overcome the barriers that stand in their way. With a fresh, no-holds-barred approach, Lia Garvin, executive coach and operations leader at influential companies including Microsoft, Apple and Google, provides you with the tools you need to nail the technique of reframing, helping you transform the way you manage conflict, feedback, negotiations, decision- making and more. Learn how to speak up for yourself with confidence, silence your inner critic and open up a whole new realm of professional possibilities.

Jam-packed with persuasive research, compelling examples and confidence- building exercises, Unstuck will get you moving again in the direction you want at the speed you desire, no matter what—or who—is holding you back.

I first want to say that I apologize to the author for butchering her quotes. I didn’t want this review to go on and on and then have women just skip over it. I wanted to show them a taste of your helpful advice.
My review. I felt like the majority of the book if focused on the work place. But having said that it also can and will be applied to everything. I have suffered from almost every thing in this book and found so much of it helpful. I found the author very likable and would like to think we could be great friends.
Just some things in the book talks about:
• Feedback
• Self-reflection
• Grown mindset
• Ego
• Practice and follow up questions
• Burnout
I liked that she presents the issues and then wants me to practice going through it in a healthier way. Finding out how to have more control, whatever that might look like. I would highly recommend this and know that it will be work. I gained a lot of insight from it and I’m happy to say that I have already internally learned some things that relieved some of my stress level.
Some of my favorite quotes :
“What the hell am I sorry about?”
“Welcome to our club. We saved you a seat.”
“Growth mindset, …,we are always evolving, that what is true today does not have to be true tomorrow. ….,When we make a mistake, growth mindset asks, “What can I learn from this?”
…….mistakes are part of life, and failure is a part of learning. It’s not easy to reframe our perspective and look for the “teachable moment” after an epic fail when the automatic response is to jump directly to beating ourselves.”

If you feel stuck in work, this book is a good motivational and practical set of tools to unstuck, notice your unproductive thinking patterns, find new perspectives, learn from failures and take actions.
Many good areas for reframing are covered: feedback, impact, goals, conflict, confidence, value, negotiation, ego, failure, accountability, comparison.
The author shares ideas from other books and provides her personal unique experiences and thoughts - I enjoyed reading these experiences.

Lia Garvin now provides the sage counsel I wish I had 27 years ago when I was first starting out. Of course, that was before cellphones, when dirt was new... Still, thank heavens she's helping women NOW, especially I think of my sophomore niece who encounters lots of these behaviors and has already determined to skip big companies altogether and work for herself. She'll still need to be able to identify these patterns and behaviors, and have these techniques handy. Highly reco.
