Sixteen-year-old Darla Belle is different than anyone she knows for many reasons. Firstly, she prefers her mandolin over people. Secondly, she’s the daughter of the town lunatic. Thirdly, she and her father have the very important job of keeping their world, Allyria, from falling into chaos and darkness. To keep their world from ending, they have to use magical music to keep Allyria alive and in celestial harmony. Darla recognizes that she may not be living her life to the fullest (being a recluse and spending unhealthy amounts of time playing music,) but she’s content and set on never changing her life, whether she’s living “properly” or not. But life rarely goes how you think it will. When her father injures himself and is no longer able to assist her in playing their life-giving song, Darla must travel up mountains and traverse great distances to find his replacement. To complete her goal she has to team up with Ridge; a young, optimistic mountain-guide who grates on her nerves and worries her with his mysteriousness. Additionally, the world of Allyria is a dangerous one. It’s full of harsh temperatures, dangerous mountains and slave Traders, whose reason for selling you isn’t because of race or class- just if you’re slow enough to get caught. Together, Darla must fight her enemies, solve age-old mysteries, and return home in time to keep the precious world from ending. And that’s just the simple part.

This book tells a beautiful, heartrending and captivating story. I don’t want to spoil anything because each reader should get to experience the twists, turns and quote-worthy pages themselves! Two things stood out to me in this book that I think are worth to mentioning here, as a part of the review.
First, the dialogue and description. The dialogue is rich with emotion and humor which is vital to making a story come to life. It is not bland in any way and I found myself laughing out loud at Darla’s sarcasm, Ridge’s wittiness and Thaddeus’ conversations with Darla. It has its serious moments too and the author does a great job of using dialogue to communicate with the reader, not only developing characters but bringing to life the world they live in. Next is description, which was SO COOL! Each setting is brought to life in unique, bizarre and captivating ways that is so fun to read about!!!
The second thing that stood out to me was the character development. We first meet Darla in her hometown with her father living a quiet, important and lonely life. She is launched into a journey and her growth throughout the book is powerful and endearing to read about. The other main characters within the story are deeply developed as well, just enough to get attached while leaving the reader wanting more. I love that each character is flawed and the most flawed characters have endearing attributes. This brings each name on the page to life which serves to bring the story to life more and more!
All in all I was really impressed with this book and I hope we get lots of sequels! I want to learn more about this world and the characters within - especially Adeline and Turmeric! ;)
This book hooked me in so fast!! It contains such a beautiful story and I did not want to stop reading. The descriptions bring the magical world to life and each setting is so unique. I especially love Peach Village and the whimsical plants from the River of Nocta. These settings made me want to jump through the pages while reading so I could experience the magical world too, but what I love the most about the book is the characters. They all feel SO real to me and I think it’s because the author not only shows their strengths but also their flaws!! They struggle but they are still so lovable. They are relatable and the dialogue between Ridge and Darla always makes me laugh. I love that the author does not shy away from the hardships that come from living in a broken world while having dialogue that brings a fun and lighthearted feel to the book. I also love Darla’s character development throughout the book. She grows so much while learning that despite the sinfulness and cruelties of the world, LIFE is beautiful! Definitely would recommend, I cannot wait for the next book!!
