My sister and I were talking about having a picnic in the park this weekend and we were talking about what foods to bring. I had a flashback to this book from my 90s childhood and I found a video on YouTube where somebody reads the book aloud! In case you were wondering, Barbie, Ken, and Skipper eat cold chicken, potato salad, brownies, and lemonade.
Barbie: A Picnic Surprise is the story of Barbie, Ken and Skipper as they ready for a fun day out at the lake.
Th story is classic Barbie - vague relationships, light personalities usually based on stereotypes for its time and crazy bodily proportions. All of this is combined with a story that is rather text heavy, based on a sugary world in which the largest and most dangerous animal is a deer and word selection is a bit questionable such as falling into a dive.
The story is illustrated with lightly colored illustrations that are bright and detailed while sticking to the typical Barbie portrayals.
All in all it was cute and sweet.thus would be a nice read for a child still into thr optimistic world of Barbie.
Randomly this book popped into my head the other day. When I was younger, I had the golden books, book on tape version, that came with a cassette tape. And I specifically remember what Barbie packed for her picnic. I’ve loved audiobooks since I was a child. Good memories. I found a recording of the tape on YouTube. 90s kid ☺️
