Claudia Gray is not my real name. I didn't choose a pseudonym because my real name is unpleasant (it isn't), because I'd always dreamed of calling myself this (I haven't) or even because I'm hiding from the remnants of that international diamond-smuggling cartel I smashed in 2003 (Interpol has taken care of them). In short, I took a pseudonym for no real reason whatsoever. Sometimes this is actually the best reason to do things.
I live in New Orleans. So far, in life, I've been a disc jockey, a lawyer, a journalist and an extremely bad waitress, just to name a few. I especially like to spend time traveling, hiking, reading and listening to music. More than anything else, I enjoy writing.
Awesome volume. I am a huge fan of ths story I think this was one of the best books to come out of the Disney Star Wars era. The art work in this volume is excellent.
Like the book this is based on I could not put It down so read the whole thing in one sitting. The perfectly captured the emotions of the characters. The montage of artwork towards the end of the book is a perfect example of this.
I have said Lost Stars was one of the best love stories I have ever read. True I mainly read it as it was set in Star Wars, but this is the real thing. This man volume captures the book perfectly and enhances the story with great artwork. Not that the manga of the book has been completed I am still begging for a sequel to finish these characters story.
Breezed through this last volume. Yet again I’m reminded how much I want Lost Stars to have a sequel. I need to know what happens next! (You hear me Claudia and LFL?)
But in all seriousness this manga series was done so well!
These complement the novel very nicely! I wouldn't have enjoyed these nearly as much if I hadn't read the novel first, since the novel is able to explore the characters and their relationships much more thoroughly.
CIENNAAAAA!!! I was wrong, she just got suicidal. So glad Thane and her had a good-ish ending. Nash going psycho for the Empire was crazy, but I’m glad someone did. This story was so good. I loved it.
This was awesome. I would have preferred the swearing be left out. The story was great, and even left us with a bit of a cliffhanger. Amazing artwork as well.
Great idea, ok story, meh dialogue. The over the top reactions of the manga style chars and all that is clearly NOT fit for a Star Wars story to be told.
*SPOILERS FROM NOW ON*
Had my problems with the characters too,in many occasions, for example, Ciena watches footage of how the AT-ATs got destroyed on Hoth, and she immediately goes "THAT'S THANE!" "only HE could be flying that way", "Only HE could find a way to bring down the AT-AT's" No. --fuck outta here-- that you know that it's him because you were childhood friends. A huge no.
So right after that, Ciena goes - HE PROMISED, I'LL GET REVENGE ON THANE - (that he wouldn't join the rebels), well, he didn't you dumbass, he just said he wouldn't join, cuz he didn't like either side, and if he did?! So what? You're not even talking, you haven't seen each other in ages, he changed his fucking mind, how fucking unrealistic for the writer to expect us to believe that she's spending all the time throughout her fucking life talking and thinking about Thane but OH when she suspects that HE joined the good guys, now he has to die. fuck outta here.. that's lazy writing.
Then, at the end I'm waiting for a pay off, and Thane goes to the ship that's going on purpose down or something with Ciena in it, and she's like... go... save yourself.. I'll stay and go down with my ship... the captain always goes down with the ship is what they say.. they have my parents so I have to stay and die." Really?
And then at the end the villain who's going to fuck shit up over dramatically and shit... sucked. So fucking bad. Like, let's finish this off with that shit so we can get off work.
Yeah. This was ok. This was at best something to read if you're 15. If that was the target group, then ok!
The idea and the whole plot being intertwined with the events from the movies is good. Even Thane as a character I liked, but everything else was mediocre or just plain bad.
Would NOT recommend, unless you really wanna read about Thane I guess.
Pick this entire series up, if you are a Star Wars junkie. All 3 volumes can be finished in one sitting and hold up in re-reads. The spines are also very nice and look great on a bookshelf next to other Star Wars collections
There isn't anything complex with Lost Stars. The story revolves around the major events in Eps 4,5,6 but its told from "a certain point of view"of two Empire Academy graduates
It is very cheesy at times, but the creators really made you care so much about Thane and Ciena. They also presented a balanced view of the Empire and gave us a more morally grey rebel alliance (no pun intended with author name).
Only complaint is that the side characters like Nash, don't really have any depth to them and his Story is great
I really enjoyed this story. The art is really good and translates the star wars universe in an excellent way, special mention to the spaceships and the Ithorians depicted. I fell for those two idiots and enjoyed seeing their motivations and fear. Claudia Gray once again delivers an amazing star wars story. I'm looking forward to read the book now.
The last volume managed to still bring out some beautiful artwork. A bit morbid that in each volume one of the most impactful panels involved the demise of a planet/planet-like structure. First seeing Alderaans destruction from an Alderaani perspective, then the wreckage of the first Death Star hovering in space and now here, Ciena, thinking of somewhat retiring, unexpectedly being engulfed in the light of the exploding second Death Star.
What I wish the story entailed more of is Ciena having more admirable reasons to remain with the empire. While this is the story of Ciena and Thane, Thane tends to get the spotlight. It's Thanes' story of becoming a good guy rebel and the switch to Ciena happens to show us what the empire is plotting. Thane gets to grow and evolve during the story. We do get a look into Ciena's thoughts but as previously mentioned they rarely show positive sides of her. Ciena witnesses the empire's manipulation and evilness again and again and again. It destroyed her friendship with Thane and later on Thane himself. Her mother was put on trial and convicted. Her home planet seems to be polluted and devoid of its previous liveliness. When Thane explained that he left due to seeing how people fear the Empire and witnessing it enslaving people she wasn't able to counter it. Her conviction being based on wanting revenge for her friend who perished with the Death Star seems rather one-dimensional and downright naive considering she said herself that the empire sent her to the wreckage on purpose to inflict hate in her. I really wish there was better reasoning. Like considering Ciena used to be a second-class citizen on her planet and she believes the empire brings a certain equalness and opportunities with it. Or she deeply believes the corruption is from singular individuals who need to be weeded out and that people like her can improve the empire. Feelings of responsibility for the people she works with and those who work under her.
I do appreciate that Ciena ended up in prison and didn't get a standard happy end. And Thane and her did at least have a heart-to-heart and we do love some communication.
Only thing I outright disliked is the ending since it reminded me of the existence os the sequels.
As the story finishes up, it's a strong reminder that love really can conquer all. If an Imperial and a Rebel can allow their love to last beyond the conflict, there will always be hope. Highlights: - Ciena unconsciously defends Thane's X-Wing from being destroyed. He escapes. AND she realizes that she will always love him. - At the battle of Endor, Ciena suffers a major injury and it takes her over a year to recover. Thane believes she is dead this whole time. - At Jakku (see the Aftermath Trilogy!), Ciena is given a promotion to Captain of a Star Destroyer. Corona Squadron (Thane's) has been told to capture a Star Destroyer and The Force must play a role in their destiny, because it is the ship she is captaining. He is able to save her before the ship crashes into the planet. - Ciena is captured as a War Criminal and Thane goes to see her. They finally proclaim their undying love and he promises to wait for her until she is freed.
Such a wonderful story! Really happy I read all three Volumes on the same day. You should definitely check this out or read the novel. Rare to find such a complex love story in Star Wars that doesn't involve characters we already know. Strong recommend.
The conclusion of the Manga adaptation of Claudia Gray's novel, encompassing the Battles of Endor and Jakku. Upon discovering that the Empire has constructed a new Death Star, Ciena's disillusionment becomes complete but her strong sense of duty nevertheless ends up placing her in command of the Star Destroyer Inflictor. Amid the final clash between the Empire and the fledgling New Republic, Thane launches a desperate bid to save the life of the woman he loves.
This book's most interesting element is Ciena's journey, in which she finally comes to understand the evil that the Empire represents but finds that her role as an Imperial officer is so core to her life that she can't escape it. In juxtaposition to that is seeing the formerly cynical Thane fully embrace his role in the Rebellion and New Republic.
It has to be said, however, that this book feels the weakest of the three and I similarly felt that the original novel didn't have as strong an emotional payoff as these two star(wars)-crossed lovers perhaps deserved.
A good conclusion to the manga adaptation of one of my favorite Star Wars novels. It doesn't quite reach the level of the book, but is pretty solid as far as changes in medium go. Thane and Ciena are great characters, and their story is captivating as it follows along the major events of the original trilogy. As this is an adaptation of the novel, there really isn't much difference in the strength of each volume.
The end to a story that tries too hard and so never becomes what it could be. The relationship between the main characters is never fully resolved and the story beats mostly follow the movies (I think I'm somewhat alone in disliking this. It seems very "sel-insertion" to me). The story movies quickly from one scene to the next and could use some more extended scenes. Much of it is melodrama.
But was it fun? Yeah, sure, it was a good ride. I don't know if I'll remember it though.
Really easy to read and it was fun to look at the artwork, but please don't read this manga series and neglect Cluadia Gray's amazing novel. They changed a few things, but mostly stuck to the story, so if you just need a quick review of events that took place in the book, then check it out.
This was a satsfying concluding volume. It wraps everything up and hints at what is to come. The art remained very good and it was a blast seeing this story and these characters in a graphic medium. I would be very happy to see more of the Star Wars stories make their way to manga format.
This ends pretty nicely and ties into another couple movies. The biggest problem with this book is its brevity. Big moments are quickly moved past to get to more big moments. So it's hard to feel any sort of impact from them.
There’s no denying that Claudia Gray is one of the best Star Wars authors today. This adaptation is perfect and I’d do anything to find out what happens Thane & Ciena. I like to imagine they went home and got to live a quiet life. 🥹
Nice ending to the trilogy. Thane still goes to the end of the system just to see if Ciena is alive or dead. There is truth in fighting for your beliefs.
